Is Cadmium Paint Toxic? ★ Review of Utrecht's Non Toxic Cadmium Free Oil Paints

  • So, as it turns out, cadmium oil paints aren't toxic to humans, but they ARE toxic to the watershed. In this video, I review the research and talk about the toxicity of cadmium oil paints, and the dangers they pose to people and the environment.
Basically, here's the TL;DR: Cadmium pigments, like all pigments used in oil paints, are ground and processed in such a way that they can't be easily absorbed into the human body, BUT -- washing your brushes using tap water can introduce small amounts of these heavy metals into the watershed, which contributes to overall environmental pollution.
My review of Utrecht's cadmium free oil paints shows that they're nearly identical to their cadmium counterparts, and so switching is something easily done, without any hassle, that reduces your overall environmental impact!

We're impressed with how clearly you expressed the challenges involved in responsibly using genuine cadmium colors, and how well you executed your product evaluations! There are more artists than ever wanting to work free from special concerns over health, safety and disposal, who need full-fledged alternatives that deserve their place in the professional studio. We knew developing the Cadmium Free collection would be one of the most complex projects in Utrecht company history. Thanks for helping artists better understand their materials, and for sharing your knowledge and research!

Yes, and not only cadmiums, but metals like Titanium and Cobalt are polluters too.

Yes! That’s very true and something I completely forgot to mention.

Hey, That's a really nice video! I used cadmium paints since I started oil painting, and I knew they are not particularly toxic to ME but I honestly never thought of the environmental impact. Now im looking for cadmium free oil paint with the same opacity of the cadmiums. to me that is the most important characteristic of them. How are the Utrecht paints doing regarding opacity? I know winsor and Newton released similar paints recently and I'm thinking about trying them out.
Im curious how you used to clean your brushes before? After painting I try to get out as much paint as possible using a paper towel, then I clean the brushes in a solvent (odourless mineral spirit) that I constantly recycle. I just pour the clean solven into a new jar and the slurry of pigments settles in the other jar. that way I always have clean and recycled solvent and I collect the slurry on one big jar where I let the used solvent settle. then after the solvent I clean the clean brushes in the sink to get rid of the solvent and some little paint residues. Maybe I should do the second washing also in a jar...🤔

Hey Christian! Thanks so much for watching! The Utrecht paints are doing pretty well for me in terms of opacity, I honestly haven’t noticed a difference between them and the cadmium pigments. I’ve switched to cleaning my brushes the way you clean yours (I use lavender spike oil as my solvent) but before I wiped excess paint on a rag/paper towel, and then cleaned in the sink with Trekell’s oil painting soap. Totally the wrong way to do it but for whatever reason that’s what my college professors were telling me.

"free oil paint with the same opacity of the cadmiums." it's IMHO reaaaaaaally not about the opacity. Also, you don't throw your paint into nature ! You paint with it.

My take is that the genuine cadmium pigments have a cleaner color compared to the replacement hues.

Opacity is very unique in cadmium colours, they sort of have a reflective effect from the crystals which I found beautiful haha

im sorry if you answered this in the video and i didn’t catch it-
How do you properly dispose of cadmium paint/paint water/paint brush cleaner if not in a drain??

I have the kuretake watercolor set that has three colors labeled as cadmiums (I don’t know if they’re hues or actual cadmium pigments cuz they don’t provide any pigment info) but is it okay to pout my paint water down the drain if it’s watercolor? I’m asking because watercolors are typically much thinner and easy to dilute. Also thanks for making this video! Very informative :)

Short reply: it’s probably fine! I talked about in the video how pollution caused cadmium paint is only a fraction of that caused by car washes. Especially if you use paper towels to blot down your brushes before washing to make the concentration of pigment even smaller, I think you’ll be totally fine. I put this video out to dispel some common myths and misunderstandings but at the end of the day it’s large companies that create the bulk of environmental pollution, not individuals! I hope that helps. 💕

Their pigment info is on their website. Although, I think it's only been in English the last few years.

So, I was able to tell the difference in the warmth and coolness of the yellows when the paint was lying down, but not so much when you held it up. As for the reds, it kind of look to me as though the cadmium free lost some of it's tenting strength, or maybe it was because it was cooler than the cad red.

So if it says hue, it doesn't contain cadmium, is that correct?

Non toxic in minute amount but when everyone dumps it into the drain it adds up.

I swallowed a cadmium played faster and it found its way to my appendix. It dissolved slowly in relation to plasma concentration until it got to the iron. Then the fastner began keeping plasma iron levels on the high side of normal. Your body uses this stuff until somehow you create a toxic situation, if you get a blood test every year they can watch out for it.

I tested a lot of "replacement" for cadmium red is quite easy to use pyrrole red .
Probably these non toxic cadium free red oil paints use the same , still need to try them out but they seems cool . I still don't understand what pigment they use u.u.
But for cadmium yellow light i couldn't find replacement until now so i got the hype for these cadmium free u.u. .
The one suggested until now are different in tone too much / transparent not opaque and when you mix them with other color behave differently .
Ez example .. the tinting power of alyride yellow is much lower than cadmium , the tone is similar, but it's a transparent pigment ...
That will make 2 huge problems for me : when i mix colors i would need to use more alyride yellow than cadmium to achieve the tone i want , it's not opaque so i will need to use it on layers in case
These cadmium free paints, to me seems like a way for paints brands to get more money exploiting all the people addicted with ecology etc ..
but if they work well who cares .

thankyou so much for this video- this was exactly what i was looking for. i use watercolours and i know that windsor and newton purposefully omits actual cadmium from their paints opting for hues because of the toxicity. I have a set of white nights and just discovered that they use cadmium and was really worried about this! especially because sometimes when doing plein air its seen as normal to just use the excess paintwater to water a plant. will definitely not be doing that. im thinking of maybe having a specific jar to pour dirty paintwater into and then just leave it in the sun to evaporate...? might also do this for acrylic cause in the end its pouring plastic down the drain :/

Can I ask something? Daniel Smith Phthalo Blue Turquoise has AP certification. Which made me think I could use it without worrying about my health but then I saw something on the dickblick site. Its chemical name says copper phthalocyanine. Does this indicate that the paint has cooper in it? I am worried about this due to my health problems and wanted to ask.

    • @KelseyRodriguez

That's a great question! Unfortunately I don't know a lot about the pigments that go into Pthalo Blue. Regardless, pigments are ground to an extent that they can't be easily absorbed into the skin. As long as you wear PPE when sanding any surface you should be okay, but I recommend you reach out to Daniel Smith directly if you want to be sure!

Sanding of oil painted surfaces that contain heavy metals should be avoided. Some colours are carcinogenic via dust inhalation. Contact the manufacturer for the safety data sheets and you'll see what the advice is. I personally wouldn't sand oil painted surfaces even with PPE.

I don’t use cadmium stuff unless it’s called Hue but I work with markers a lot because I like them and they might get on my hand. I know pencil lead don’t contain lead but I have some sensory issues also, it looks ugly on the skin.

Hello, I was currently reading something on PV29. I really like that and other perylene pigments or dyes, but the study says they have a unreasonable risk as of 2020. What do I do? Watercolors hardly have that much pigment and I’m not making it myself. Should I be worried?

Do the cadmium free oils from Utrecht state that on the tubes? I've searched on Dick Blick and the Utrecht site, but didn't see any descriptions that actually state the oils are cadmium free. Where is the best place to purchase them? I live in California. Thanks for your great video, Kelsey.

It would be easier to listen to you if there weren't so much distracting music in the background.
basically my brain has difficulties deciding what information/sound is more important and I miss parts of what you're saying.
I know there are many people that can easily form an information hierarchy when it comes to sound, but for me and some other people this is really hard.
it's frustrating because I really want to concentrate on your content.
