The mindset shift that will change your life

  • Shifting from a short-term focused mindset focused on getting results as fast as possible to a far more relaxed, studious, long-term mindset has changed my life in more ways than I can probably imagine.
Focusing on really leveling up at the fundamentals can seem like the boring route (which i mean sometimes it is, you don't have to love every aspect of your career or even your pasison, so long as you recognize their importance) but it's ALSO the path that leads to the most artistic growth and creative development over time.

My analogy for talent vs practice has always been this:
“Naturally talented people” who are better than most in something from the get go are like a character in an RPG who starts at level 5 and has an exp boost of 20%.
And practicing is the act of going out and fighting monsters and getting EXP. Sure the “talented” person might start ahead and grow a little bit faster - but only if they put in the work to gain the experience and practice.
And like in an RPG, if I’m staying on the comfort of the starting area, consistently killing lvl1 slimes… after a while it will take quite a while to level up. You gotta branch out form your comfort zone and always be a little uncomfortable, facing monsters slightly above your level, to gain experience in a good pace. It’s all about the frequency AND THE QUALITY of the battles you’re facing - which I think is akin to the difference between mindful and mindless practice
Might be a convoluted analogy but if you game I’m sure you followed my drift haha

So well said! Practicing the fundamentals listed here is what leads to descriptive and expressive power in art. Great insight! We think you are right: artistic skills are acquired through hard work and practice. Maybe "talent" is really more of a natural affinity or love of the craft, because if you love making art, it doesn't have to feel like work!

    • @JuliaBambooliaASMR
      @JuliaBambooliaASMR 2 роки тому +5

Oh, my gosh! Blick themselves commented! ♥ Kelsey has made it. :)
And exactly what you said! What my drawing professor in college said never left my mind. She also doesn't believe "art talent" is a thing, only *skill*, which one can develop. If anything is a talent, it's the ability for one to diligently practice their craft frequently, or the stick-to-it-iveness, because the practice/study is what makes you great.

Kelsey I just want to say how much this has resonated with me! I'm trying to improve my art and skills, since lately I've been comparing myself to others way too much thanks to social media. But these kind of challenges motivate me to see the positive side and realize that without the comparisons I would never try to get better at what I love doing the most, so I'm taking it slowly and with a positive mindset. I aspire to grow my youtube channel and in the way become the artist that I know I can become, and you inspire me so much for all that! Thank you thank you thank you!

Having a UA-cam channel is a great motivation to keep going [at least for me it is :D ] but it is also soo much work. I feel you on the comparing yourself, it can be so disheartening to see all of that good art. But we still have so much in front of us and so much to learn we just need to give it a time. AND practice :D Your art is so cute and I love your use of colors please keep going but take a break if you need.

Thank you so much for the prompt! Very well said! Constant improvement and strong foundations of the drawing fundamentals is really the only way to go if you want to get serious about art. When I was starting out, I was always seeking for some magical advice here on yt that would drastically improve my progress and that's probably why most clickbatey videos have a lot of views, reality is though that there is no such thing and you actually have to do the hard work, there are NO shortcuts. I feel like one of the common reasons why most beginners quit despite having potential is because improvement is barely noticable, some only wait for that 'eureka' moment without learning for improvement.

There's an anime I loved where they show the difference between the so-called successful, "genius and talented" artists vs the normal. What this anime taught was, its not because they are "talented and genius" that's why they are on top. It's because they don't give up, they are more persistent, they are so focused in their tasks, even they fail they just move forward and didn't stay still, they don't let the drama of life hinder their path to success and they keep on learning.
Also, what I notice, to me and to other people as well, we all have different way of learning. One might not be able to learn anatomy by thinking about the "anatomy" itself, rather by reducing it to simple blocks. Same, others might not understand color by just reading the theories, even with composition, perspective to this golden ratio etc. So in the end, I guess the best way to easily learn things is to know first yourself, how you learn things easily, what makes you remember things easily, etc. Find and create your own guidelines, to be specific.

I love having drawing challenges because it tells you what to draw but not specifically so there is alot of creative freedom. There's so many things I want to draw and have to study that it can be very overwhelming. Not knowing where to start often leads me to not drawing at all. Aside from following art challenges, I plan to create lists of exact exercises to follow and things to draw, so that way, when I go sit at my desk, I can start drawing right away instead of over thinking about what to draw.

oh hey Dante! You've been a subscriber for ages, it's nice to hear from you. I grew up speaking Spanish in school, I should really start practicing again. Let me know if the auto-translated subtitles ever get things wrong and I can try to go back and add custom ones!

I have noticed exactly this! I need to start from scratch if I don't want to continue spending 20 hours for a portrait sketch.

Talent is just an extra interest, a drive and a NEED. Sometimes, life takes us in away from art and you feel ot every day until you can't take it anymore

i think for me personally im just scared of starting because im scared of realizing that maybe all these years ive been drawing have been for nothing.. i want to learn, i want to improve.. theres just this barrier thats impossible for me to get past. actually starting the process is so difficult and i dont know what to do.. theres just more i have to improve on and learn than i thought and im scared of getting too overwhelmed that i'll give up and the cycle of me ignoring the fact i need to improve my art skills will just continue..

Thanks for putting the work into telling us the real deal. I've been drawing forever and people think it happened overnight
