      Hi Anna Maria. I am so glad you are doing these tutorials - thank you. I have been practising overtone singing for a while and I have one question and one comment. First, I find that I am able to modulate the different notes with my tongue, but I can only get four distinct notes this way. Do you have any tips for extracting a full range of notes? Second, I am really struggling to make the overtones louder, so I really hope you will give a fairly detailed tutorial for your next video. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent with us.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been doing this in the car for a couple of years as a form of meditation when I get angry at other drivers (really helps me relax and sometimes I forget where I was going), but I didn't know how to get different overtone notes. Your lesson 1 video changed everything and gives me a lot to practice. You are an inspiration!

    So, it's *better* to practice *with* some background noise?

    • @Queer_Nerd_For_Human_Justice
      @Queer_Nerd_For_Human_Justice 9 років тому +30

      InfinityDz Yes, because it drowns out the sounds you're not trying to practice on, so you can notice the ones you are practicing on. It allows you to have better muscle-brain feedback, and helps you learn. Like wiggling your ears in a mirror, it helps to start by wiggling your whole face until you notice a change in your ear movement. Or even like sleeping, your brain loses memories as you sleep, cause the little insignificant ones like what you had for breakfast fade away and leave the more important ones more prominent and easy to see. ^^ Or maybe it's like flooding a landscape to see which hill is tallest! It's whichever one is an island after the flood ^^

    My voice teacher told me the car is not a good place to practice. And that the shower is the best. The car has too much noise, and the shower has the hot moisture that is good for the vocal chords.

    So much fun! Thanks! These are great lessons! I had never tried it and I am not a singer by any means, but I could hear overtones at the first try....like magic! no control of it whatsoever, but it does comes out. Now I am trying to create just 1 overtone and stay there but I focus so much on the harmonic once it shows up that I endup unwillingly moving the fundamental to match the harmonic and the harmonic disappears...I have challenged myself to be able to stay in one fundamental and 1 overtone....not easy!
    I love trying to do this! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    Try it with a very noisy petrol driven (not eco friendly) garden strimmer and ear defenders, you can hear the overtones from the mouth cavity really clearly in your inner ear. You don't even have to sing or make a noise, the mouth cavity via tongue shape changes the sound from the machine...it's sehr kool ya. ;-)

But I can't for the life of me get anyone who hasn't already heard overtones to distinguish them in my voice. The overtones just aren't loud enough. Hopefully lesson three will explain it well.

    When are you going to post tips on how to get it louder? I can make the overtone thing but it's really quiet, and I get more volume doing it the Mongolian way with vibrating deep in your throat, although I can't really stain that without a lot of water. Most of the Mongolian styles keep the base tone the same but seem to do something inside their mouths maybe with their tongue to change the pitch and volume of the resulting higher note. Tips on volume and clarity?
