Great tutorial, I really like the look of the ADA canister filters. This is what I have been looking for to DIY for my nano tank. I would agree with the others about safety with power tools, just took my brother to the emergency room yesterday after he had an accident with a table saw. Still great work.
Love the idea and finished product! But I would be a lot more careful next time with the drill, you could have easily had a slip and drilled into your hand. Get a table vice maybe? Anyway, great work!
I have a scar in exactly that spot on my left palm from the same mistake when I was about 20. What will happen is not that you'll push the drill through too fast and hit yourself. Instead the drill will cut through but not finish the hole, leaving two little bits of plastic that catch in the flutes (just like it did at 2:50). As the drill continues spinning, the flutes pull the drill forward faster than you can even see, let alone react to, and then you've got the tip of a drill bit making a tent of the skin in the back of your hand. You won't even feel it happen. Pro tip: Put the drill in reverse and back it out once it's in your hand, don't just pull.
I always wonder on these why people don't just make two holes in the lid and pass a hose through the media to the bottom of the container for the inlet. Seems much less likely to leak, though filling it with media could be a pain. Not complaining about the work, you did a great job, just wondering.
I'd put the pump on the lower connection instead of top... I mean, I prefer to have the gunk on top. Easier to do maintenance Is there a specific reason for the filter working on upflow instead of downflow?
You want it to pull the water through the media. It works better than pushing it through. Plus you get less gunk going through the pump prop and clogging it especially if there are big chunks.
I am absolutely going to be making one of these. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. Quick question. How did you get around the space between the two walls of the container? Did the threaded end of the elbow reach through all the way to the inside? I was thinking about using silicone inside that area to seal it from the inside if need be. Because the space between the two walls would become dead space.
I made a similar one with ikea food canister and it works great for my mini paludarium . The on difference is that i use silicone instead of O ring for the elbow fittings to water seal it.
@@drew-ie9xw Thanks! This style is called poppy. I believe they're designed to break the surface tension differently than than your standard lily pipe.
Hey the submersible pump in your description is no longer available. Could you possibly send an alternative ? Also, where'd you source those lily pipes from? Too cool!
@@officialmodernaqua Can you share what you did for the under side of the lid? Did the thread of the elbow go from the top down all the way to the bottom? Was any addition tubing added to the threaded part of the elbow to seal the "hole"?
Hi Joshua, sorry I didnt include footage of the under side but nothing is connected on the other side. Although the inside of the lid had strayfoam that I had to remove that once I drilled the hole through the lid.
I’m so done with instructional videos with no narration. There is information you should be providing throughout the video including safety tips. I skipped ahead in the video to see if you start speaking later but instead what I saw was you holding the metal can with one hand and drilling a hole with the other. Nice.
Anyone attempting this, when you're using push to connect fittings, make sure you cut the tubing straight across so that it sits flush inside of the connector. If you don't, you risk it leaking and possibly siphoning the water out of your tank and all over the floor. It's a great concept, but this guy's execution is very cringe.
Wtf? Are you making coffee for fish?, the stupidest idea I have seen for a long time, it is a 1930 silent film. what equipment you preferred and why? Oh I am sorry, is it a secret?
You made me cringe a lot when you drilled a hole while holding it adjacent to your palm 😂 great work btw!
Drilled the cylinder or the lid
A small block of wood on the table while you're drilling can work wonders.

Agree totally about safety ..love the product

Awesome job man! I'll definitely try this for my nano tank build soon 👍🏻
Ikea has a similar container! I was thinking about building something like that myself! This is very inspirational :)
Awesome let me know how that goes or if you have a link to the container
@@officialmodernaqua If i#ll end up making it i'll let you know! The container is called "EFTERFRÅGAD"
This is what I’ve been looking for! I’m going to try this!
Goodluck! Happy to help if you have any questions
Very nice! I made a plastic version which has been going for about a year now but I love the ADA style
Wow from magnets to this!! I will definitely be trying this
Is it possible to do an update on the parts list?
Wow! Great job!
Thank you!

That lighting won’t burn the top plants? Or it’s cool to the touch? 😊
do you have a new list of amazon links since the vacuum container isn't sold anymore?

The food container does not have enough wall thickness to make a good thread engagement with the pneumatic coupling. I wonder how long will this work.
What's the problem by that?

Man thats exactly what i needed for my nano aquascape thank you! 🙏🏼 Really quick what size lily pipes would you need for that size hose?
How many liters/hours is the water pump?
You gotta make a video on the DIY Poppy bruh!
What size and where did you get those lily pipes?

I made something simillat like this as an inline heater. But i couldnt figure out how to secure the leaks..
How did you take care of the leaks?
Where is it leaking?
