ive made a couple of different ice tires for my XR650 and DRZ400, and have had various results, but i really like this one. it seems like the amount of time to build the tire was worthit for the end result, and durability looks better than my screw-tire, but faster & cheaper to make than my snowmobile-stud tire. i think ill try this, good upload!
Ive done it using about 375 tapcon screw (same as video) Its awsome soooo much traction and they barely used at all while riding on the lac and enduro , fireroad too with snow / ice. 100% best way to get into snow riding for cheap dont use a back tire that is too much used like i did other wise you wont like when the snow get too much deep!=) Also ... Use a new tire with the biggest knob you find in the front ..... Those screw in the front will last forever but they are sticking out way to much of a used front tire.. Use a new one it will last year and works better
I'm thinking about two things that I want your opinion on: 1- should I tac weld each nut on screw? 2- should I use short screws on the outermost knobs and put them into the tire? like towards the inner tube ( ensuring they are short enough not to go all the way through).
omg voice is great. id love to know how you picked up on such a specific pitch/ tone and overall word placement just so on point hilarious. i think you spent alot of time in the car with your dad playing AM radio? awesome video
looks like you might live in Utah. not sure if you have heard of the herrriman enduro race in may. you might be interested in it. i did it and loved it
cool but yeah they seem to wear super quick and wouldnt be usable on cross terrain like asphalt? And when they were down you'd probably just have to chuck the tire or keep it and have that liner foam to protect itself So how about other solutions like chain?
Please reply! Im interested in your idea but correct me if im wrong but these bolts dont quite fit on these screws and this why you used the impact right? Because i dont own an impact and im planning to do this with wrenches. And if the bolt doesnt fit on the screw and you have to convince it to fit it maybe hard for me to do it
I have a couple questions, if someone could please answer me here: I want to stud some tires for riding on frozen lakes, not for tracks/frozen ground. I'm wondering if long aggressive studs like these are more for like frozen tracks where they can dig in more, not for solid ice, and shallower screws/studs are more suited for ice riding. I feel like long screws would get flimsy on solid ice. Am I on track here or what? Also, what exactly did you mean when you said crossthread those nuts onto the screws? Do the screw threads not quite match the nuts so they lock together? Do you have exactly what nuts you were using? thanks in advance and great video!!!
Do the studs only last one ride? I was talking to a dealer and you don't really want to ride on any non ice or snow surfaces. Also I watched this video on silent due to the fact being at work.
I'm a fan of your vids. I am from nh. I just did this to my rear tire. How did it work for you? I was nervous that they were too long? Can you please let me know how it worked out and how many should I out in the front tire. I'm on my way to do my buddy's tire now
Kris Roos Lol, I just want to clarify that I don't think it would work on a dirtbike. Ok on a mountain bike, definitely not on a dirtbike. I initially used inner tube material but I switched to duct tape when the innertube rubber shifted in the tire one time.
Kris Roos Yes. Duct tape is not built to handle friction and the higher loads that are being subjected upon it with the substantially heavier and more powerful dirbike. It might work for a while if you stack layers of it but I wouldn't trust it as much as the rubber pad of unknown origin found in the video.
I tried that but the chain was too short... I added a link to the chain but then the whole wheel moved back so far and ended up all the way against the rear of the swing arm with the chain too loose lol
I made them! Great video! Only problem I had was that the 1 1/4 screws were hitting my mud guard/cover thing right if front of the rear shock? Did you have this problem…and if so how did you fix it?
I'm in the process of studding up my tires and was wondering if the screws come out without washers? I didn't see you use any washers and I’m assuming you haven't had any problems.
I've tried a couple versions of this, and is sucks. Basically, its only a matter of time until those screw heads chew through your liner and then your tube. If you use a liner thick enough to make the tire last a ling time, it's almost impossible to mount the tube and tire. If you want a tire you can use on trails, there is NOTHING better than 1/4" auto studs, also known as rally studs. They have carbide tips and don't go all the way through your tires. Do it right and avoid a LOT of wasted time and getting stuck in the snow miles from your truck.
hey zachatk2 I know this videos was made a long time ago but how do you clean your dirt bike after riding and prevent your bearing and other components form freezing up after washing, or do you just not wash your bike until the spring time hope this makes cents thanks.
yall are so fucking mean leave the man alone if you dont like his voice dont watch his vids but thank you zack i did this for my quadzilla it was very helpful but time consuming like you said
Is the width of that thread 1/4" lol did I understand correctly? Just wonderin coz I know only them metric units and I can't find that size screws, if the screws are 1-1/4" in length they are super narrow like 11/64" and that screw you showed was very thick... Of course I could use those not so thick screws but I think they will bend easier. Btw if this comment double posts I'm sorry it happens to me almost every time I'm not trying to troll or anything, this has happened me since this google+ thing came.
Your going to want to go to the outside of the tire so you can really lean it over on the ice. Other wise you could lose traction and go down hard. It is ice. Like slippery concrete
100% worth building these tires. They work great on ice and in snow. Just insane
You need to make more how too's. Love your delivery! Too entertaining!
ive made a couple of different ice tires for my XR650 and DRZ400, and have had various results, but i really like this one. it seems like the amount of time to build the tire was worthit for the end result, and durability looks better than my screw-tire, but faster & cheaper to make than my snowmobile-stud tire. i think ill try this, good upload!
If they ever make a movie of my life. It'll be a lot more exciting if this guy narrates.
ZachAtk1 is a beast all the haters should shutup and learn to appreciate the commentary, especially in the badass dirtbike videos
Glad i saw this, over the winter i tried riding in the snow without any studs , and got stuck in a foot of snow.
Dude... Your voice and way you talk:
"You should be a commentator on a radio station!" :D
Heck yea
done this many of times works pretty good, I remember seeing a video a lo g time ago they called it "the meat grinder"
less screws on the front tire, good tip. I'm gunna try that setup this winter.
We do an Elephant Ride here in Colorado. It's a blast...I think I will take an old tire and do this for next years ride.
I'm sharing this with the Citreon 2CV OffRoadClub ,
High rating the voice over also, much respect .
Cheers for the tutorial Zach .
"you're not done yet!" why the hell not?! it looks awesome
I clicked on this video and got excited when I realized it was ZackAtk lol
i like the way how you scream instead of talk normally to your audience !!!!!!
😂😂
I plan on following your instructions . Why no studs on the outside knobs?
This guy, has the best voice.
I'm thinking about two things that I want your opinion on:
1- should I tac weld each nut on screw?
2- should I use short screws on the outermost knobs and put them into the tire? like towards the inner tube ( ensuring they are short enough not to go all the way through).
Is it just me, but I loved ur screaming! Very good video
omg voice is great. id love to know how you picked up on such a specific pitch/ tone and overall word placement just so on point hilarious. i think you spent alot of time in the car with your dad playing AM radio? awesome video
looks like you might live in Utah. not sure if you have heard of the herrriman enduro race in may. you might be interested in it. i did it and loved it
I'll suggest you to stop shouting.
nahhh
ikr! its not like we sit a mile away from the computer!
lol
Keep shouting!
Looooud noises!!🤣
These are the absolute best tires you could build. I ride down pavement to get to the lake
I really like his enthusiasm :D
Wish we had snow races here in minnisota!
do you think you could spray flex seal on the inside of the tire to prevent the screws from puncturing the inner tube
Aw god! Do more videoes with that voice! :D I liked it hahah
Why Are you screaming?
I know right 😂
:D
+Lars W Gjethammer too much snow cone i guess
lol its entertaining
(Dave Chappelle's Samuel L. Jackson voice)
He ain't loud! That's how he talks!
How long do they last before they dull down.... Have you ever had any rip out?
cool but yeah they seem to wear super quick and wouldnt be usable on cross terrain like asphalt? And when they were down you'd probably just have to chuck the tire or keep it and have that liner foam to protect itself
So how about other solutions like chain?
I bet u are not louder then me ... I am not joking ,,, YOU R WORK ,,PURE ART,, ....
I'm doing this this winter since my knobbies have about 4.5k miles on them and I'll be getting supermoto wheels in the spring
Also would putting Red Loctite on the bolts also be a good idea? Just an extra measure lol
just a dot of it. Good idea.
I like when you talk so entertaining hahaha Good Work
how much does this cost for both tires and is 200 enough for one tire or two?
Good vid, good idea. I liked the commentary as well.
I would put washers in between the screws in the inside of the tires. for saftey, there for I dont want to ruien my tires.
Great video. I was wondering if it realy matters if I use an old tire with still at least 50% left?
I didn't know Gilbert Gottfried raced dirt bikes....
That is a very horrible Comparison
I'm thinking more, Jay Baruchel. Lol
A more serious question... do you have issues with rubbing into the fender plastics and chewing it all up?
Awesome video and thanks for the shout out
Trying this. Did you put screws on the sides in back? I'm thinking of putting swall studs on the sides up front. What do you think? Thx!
Will this work on minibike tires??? Changing the screw and nut size of course.
Excellent idea, but i would of added loctite 290 wicker. Just for added insurance.
those tires look extremely violent! you could easily kill a crowd of a hundred people by running them over with those tires on
Or maybe you're just violent...
hahahah yesss. I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK
oechikr What a wonderful addition to our society. Your way of thinking makes me feel uber safe.
ikr? Your welcome :D
Yea hopefully
Please reply! Im interested in your idea but correct me if im wrong but these bolts dont quite fit on these screws and this why you used the impact right? Because i dont own an impact and im planning to do this with wrenches. And if the bolt doesnt fit on the screw and you have to convince it to fit it maybe hard for me to do it
can you do that with a pocket bike with bald tires too?
Try flex seal to seal the inside of the tire maybe
I have a couple questions, if someone could please answer me here:

Yes.
You don't want them to long because they will dig to far in and snap or they will snap because of pressure
You should post a video for the front tire as well. What was your pattern for the front?
Thanks for posting this zach
I just push thumb tacks through the bottem. i climbed mount evrest with them.
sounds like you should do voice overs for cartoon characters.
Do the studs only last one ride? I was talking to a dealer and you don't really want to ride on any non ice or snow surfaces. Also I watched this video on silent due to the fact being at work.

Excellent Video!
duck tape does work..so does cutting old inner tube
amazing broseph! i'll be doing this for sure.
You have great modulation in your voice. You should be a teacher!
cool vid, sound like the kid from the polar express movie the one with the glasses lol
can the tire be wore out or does it have to have some tread left?
+JakeWardell 19 It can be worn out because the screws are the primary tread
Y the fuck am I watching this I live in sunny Queensland oz and don't ride a dirt bike
+Graham Bate same here exactly!
lol
+Graham Bate incase it snows spiders again
lol
hahaha
couldnt you use snowmobile studs that would cost the same amount? or would they not work as well
Can you use these when there isn't snow
Wouldn't duct tape work as the liner
+Kris Roos I use duct tape on my mtb, it's been there for the past 3 winters now.
Cool thank you
Kris Roos
Lol, I just want to clarify that I don't think it would work on a dirtbike. Ok on a mountain bike, definitely not on a dirtbike. I initially used inner tube material but I switched to duct tape when the innertube rubber shifted in the tire one time.
+ChuddleBuggy hmm, what would happen if i did use duck tape, would the tube rub a hole in itself?
Kris Roos
Yes. Duct tape is not built to handle friction and the higher loads that are being subjected upon it with the substantially heavier and more powerful dirbike. It might work for a while if you stack layers of it but I wouldn't trust it as much as the rubber pad of unknown origin found in the video.
SHOULD I SCREAM MY RESPONSE ASWELL? I LIKED THE VIDEO THANKS
I tried that but the chain was too short... I added a link to the chain but then the whole wheel moved back so far and ended up all the way against the rear of the swing arm with the chain too loose lol
how long does it last?
WHAT!?!!!? SPEAK!!! UP!!! IN!! YOUR!!! NEXT!!!! VIDEO!!!!!!! Lol your awesome man
Do you think i can do this on a ktm 125 exc for winter road driving?
You don't need the internet, I can hear you without it )))
Still, nicely done there ;-)
I made them! Great video! Only problem I had was that the 1 1/4 screws were hitting my mud guard/cover thing right if front of the rear shock? Did you have this problem…and if so how did you fix it?
I dont have this set up but maybe if you extend your axle bolt out farther with ur chain it would give you more space...
love this idea! sharing it to the world. thanks!
This looks badass!!!
I'm in the process of studding up my tires and was wondering if the screws come out without washers? I didn't see you use any washers and I’m assuming you haven't had any problems.
I havent done this yet but plan on it. I would think so because he is cross threading the screws.
Tom B U shouldn't do it if your racing cause its illegal to race like that but if your just riding with some friends around the trails then its fine
Nicely done guys, but why no washers on the outside ?. since youré using "Wood"screws.
Cement screws.
Good answer. But it wont stop the partsvfrom going further intobthe knob im sorry to say.
I was just saying thats what they were doing. Simply correcting you, not trying to argue with you
No problem :-) ive built a few ucetires and know what works depebding on bikeweight :-)
Those are tap-cons, made for drilling and attaching into masonry or concrete block walls..they are very tough and coated..I bet their great studs...
I would change the title to "how to prep your bike for zombies"
bloody burn out
Only dumb as Americans think that

Dude you are so hyper, chill bro!
Its good idea and its really have good performance
Thank god I live in Florida
yall are so fucking mean leave the man alone if you dont like his voice dont watch his vids but thank you zack i did this for my quadzilla it was very helpful but time consuming like you said
Cool. Anyone have any suggestions for studding a tire for highway commuting in snow?
Boy you crazy 🤣
Nice FLORIDA shirt!
Would this work for a snowmobile
wish the series i did let you have custom screws from the inside out rather than only outside in ):
Is the width of that thread 1/4" lol did I understand correctly? Just wonderin coz I know only them metric units and I can't find that size screws, if the screws are 1-1/4" in length they are super narrow like 11/64" and that screw you showed was very thick... Their called tap-cons and they are for screwing into masonry or concrete block/walls, go to lowe's or local hardware and ask for tap-cons
Your going to want to go to the outside of the tire so you can really lean it over on the ice. Other wise you could lose traction and go down hard. It is ice. Like slippery concrete
BUT WILL IT CUT!?
Is it good in loose and compact deep snow? Like 9inches?
Kevin Cosgrove we need to do this
WHY AM I SHOUTING NOW!!!!! Great vid man!
Gotta ask, how did they hold up?
What kind of dirt bike is that?
Do the tires have to be in good condition?
Will this work for plain ice? I'm worried the spikes will be too long. I'm planning on taking my 110 out this winter on a pond.
Bro u have an epic voice.
Good Video!
Did anyone else notice hes wearing a shirt that says Florida! ? Lol. Ice.. Florida? Lol
I seen a different method if those sharp little things catch your clothing and they get tangled guaranteed to send you to the hospital so be safe
