The search for 'dry fly heaven' - Fly fishing New Zealand.

- The search for 'dry fly heaven' took place a few seasons back with regular client/buddy Kresten Ovesen from Denmark. I only just recently got around to editing the footage of what was a great trip, with the majority of fish (as the title would suggest!) eating dry flies. I managed to drown my main camera half way through, but was able to use my Canon 5D to capture some cool moments over the second half of the adventure. I think it captures the essence of adventure angling and trust you'll enjoy the rugged nature of the surroundings and quality of fish caught. Cheers, Mike.

Cheers and thanks for taking the time to comment!
What a gorgeous river and scenery, this would be my dream. I've done alot of fly fishing in the North Island, mainly rainbows. Loving your videos and think you are an amazing guide
Thanks so much for the kind words
Superb! Save them from the Eels by keeping them in the water! ✌💪 Well done 🙏
Bugger, what wonderful scenery, what wonderful fish. Truly a dry fly paradise!! The filming isn't shabby either, thanks for posting this.
Mike I have to say I think you make one of the finest fishing videos that are currently available apart from the scenery which is absolutely stunning which you seem to capture with real sense of the beauty of where you are, your dialogue is excellent , your fishing companion is very skilled and shows great respect for the fish and it's nice to see them returned in such a considerate manner well done to both of you.
Thanks Michael for your kind and heartfelt words. Means a lot to us both.
You guys have outdone yourselves yet again!
Thanks Steve! He makes it a pleasure to work for sure.
Quite envious of these great videos. Getting ready to try and spend my summer learning to fly fish. One thing all these UA-cam fly fishing videos shows me is how envious I am of having friends.
Friends are an important part of enjoying these places for sure. I hope you take up the sport for sure and excel at it!
Some of the most amazing fish I have ever seen from one trip.
Surly that's gotta go down as a trip of a lifetime.
Thanks Mike for a fantastically produced video.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
jlush444 cheers for the kind words, glad you liked it 😬
good call n the high sticking !!
This pieced together a lot of what I sat and thought about for the past few years, slowly finding new science here and there in the public realm to put it together. I would like to see it all in the wild in person some day.
I saw tons of fly fishing videos on UA-cam, but this channel has the best ones. greetings from Chile
Rodrigo Bonora thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoy them!
Mike, this video is great! I love how you spot-light the fish and really show the delicacy of the presentations. Great Job!
So glad you liked it and taking the time to comment
Great work Mike nice video , Also to Kris a committed and very skilled fly, You both made it a pleasure to watch!
Thanks so much for the kind words
Some people think fly fishing about catching 20 stockie rainbows in an artifical pond when really all we need is one or 2 wild browns in beautiful surroundings👍🎣🐋☘
even in ugly surroundings, if the trout are wild and pretty they are worth it
timothemad ok
timothemad introduced species yes but definitely wild
@@timothemad Wild and native are two different things. These are 100% wild trout. They spawn and are born in these rivers.
Mike, I truly enjoy your videos. I get behind the vise and fill fly boxes, all the while watching your channel and dreaming of the day I can cast a line on New Zealand water.
GLAD TO HELP! :-)
What an amazing place and beautiful fish, fantastic video. Great job mate 👍😀
Cheers!
Really enjoy watching your channel! Keep the videos coming!
Great photography, enjoy the long shots and pace of the film, Kresten is so mellow and polite with the fish, Awesome video, one of the best I've seen.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts - glad you liked it!
Great video! Amazing fish, water, and scenery!
Well Mike, what can I say?
Everytime I watch one of your videos, it becomes several.
I am continually impressed with the splendor you show us.
I am absolutely knocked out by the beauty of the place.
The fish(ing), are/is literally jaw dropping.
Makes my wife miss N.Z. even more though.
I am,100 percent, going to locate you as soon as we move there...
Right now, I'm about to tie on a new leader, and get ready for tomorrow.
By the way, if you could, please tell Kresten how much we appreciate his
obvious apparent passion.
Joe Dulewich thanks again and I'll let him know! 😃
Good grief! They’re all HUGE!! Cheers from Memphis!

Awesome fish, very nice filmed. I just wonder through how much small fish you have to go to get one of those beauties ? Because there is surely not only monsters in this river....

After watching them bag 24 inchers constantly like it's no one's business, I'd been impressed if they caught one 12 incher or less!

I'm still here but these clips don't make themselves... I have some in the pipeline and will post when time allows :-)
22:40 absolute stunner of a fish
GREAT!!
Ein absoluter Traum 👌
Mike you film and produce some of the best fly fishing films currently on UA-cam is it my imagination or have you stopped doing them? Best regards.
michael hocking thanks for the kind words, I have four projects in progress and one due in the next few weeks - I’ve been upping my still photography game recently and it’s been hard to find the time for my vids, they take a lot of hours to complete
when you arrive by helicopter, you know it will be a good fishing
Loved the video Mike. I'm curious as to what your main camera is. You said you used a Canon 5D for the second half. What camera did you use for the first half?
Canon XA 30
ощень красиво!
💨💩💩💩
It's hard to find the perfect river, but.....
hehe indeed!
Why is there never anyone else on these rivers. Are the helicopter access only. 🤨
Not heli only, just a huge number of rivers, fewer anglers who look for their own solitude
@@mikefsher amazing fishery. Love watching the videos and the camera work and picture quality is awesome. ❤️
Thanks so much!
What are some good trout rivers In NZ ? Or are they all this wonderfull?
@32:58 Faaaaark!!! Never ever do that! You scared the sh** out of me!
👍👍👍👍
Rich man's fishing ! First , you fly half way around the world to fish in New Zealand. Then you fly in by helicopter to fish in an area that no one can even get to . No wonder the fish are large and not spooked. They haven't had hundreds of people per day fishing for them .
What kind of rod do you have? It is a super video! I love it.
Looks to me like a Scott G series
Scott Radian - cheers!
Can anyone tell me the name of the piece of piano music playing? I’ve heard it on a few different vids but no one ever seems to know what it is. Thanks.
what fkies patterns were you using?
Sorry about your camera Mike, that's a pain
Colin Dunn only a device - they still make them (albeit waterproof now!)
whats the rod/line/leader used?
Scott Radian 5wt. Lamson Reels and Airflow Backcountry lines.
@@mikefsher wow awesome! I thought it was a Sage X
Dark Nemophilist I don't use Sage at all...
Hey what's your rig/setup for those trout that large in fast moving water?
aklags the situation dictates the setup ie: you study what's in front of you and sort an appropriate rig. There is no one rig...
@@mikefsher I know. I'm asking what you used on the river this day. Thanks.
aklags ...again see first answer, there were many fish caught and they all dictated different rigs. The answer you seek will be answered with understanding of the fundamentals. There is no one answer.
@@mikefsher LOL ok, well "I carried a number of rods and it depends which fish you were asking about" would have been just fine. I understand the fundamentals quite well... but one can't tell from the video that you just happened to have tons of rods and constantly changed lines. A lot of people fish with one rod when they fish up a river like that. I'm not sure why you're talking to me as if you're a mystic and I am some wide-eyed beginner, awestruck at some intangible idea.... I've spent a lifetime fishing rivers like that and was literally trying to ask you what some of your choice rigs were, I didn't realize it was a such a big deal to just answer that. Yeesh.
aklags we don't carry a lot of rods, Kresten used one. Don't get all precious there princess, just trying to answer as honestly as possible. If you had all the experience you maintain, you'd have asked a different question like 'how do you go about selecting rigs for each fish' which I could have answered if that is what you wanted. Just trying to help.
