Regarding cotton, when people use the term "Japanese selvedge denim", they are referring to denim fabric that is manufactured in Japan. However, it is important to note that the cotton used to make this fabric can come from anywhere in the world. In fact, 99.9% of all Japanese denim, whether selvedge or not, is made from cotton sourced from various places such as the USA, Africa, Australia, South America, the Middle East, and China. It's worth noting that different cotton varieties, similar to different coffee varieties, offer varying levels of quality and characteristics. For instance, extra-long staple cotton like the American-grown Supima produces a softer and stronger denim fabric, whereas a short staple cotton will produce a rougher, grittier feel. Additionally, the texture of the fabric can also be affected by the way the cotton is spun. Lastly, because you mentioned that you weren’t sure if all our fabric were Japanese or not. All of our denim comes from Japan and we offer both selvedge and non selvedge options. Even all of our shirting is made using Japanese fabrics.
There is one line of jeans made by Samurai, where the cotton is grown, harvested and woven in Japan before made into denim and thats the "Samurai Cotton Project". It's pretty crazy tbh
I'd caution people about buying more than 3-4 pairs of selvedge denim per year. It takes some wears to get them comfortably broken in and a lot longer to get those fades. It's a lot less fun if you're constantly breaking in new pairs and not seeing any fades. Also, wash your jeans when they get dirty. You don't need to wash them weekly or even monthly necessarily, but don't avoid washing them if they stink. Just turn em inside out, wash em with relatively gentle detergent, and hang dry. It won't ruin the jeans, they can take it lol
TCB using Zimbabwean cotton is a good thing. It’s still Japanese selvedge denim it’s just Zimbabwean cotton is longer staple so it’s stronger and softer. Momotaro uses the same because Japanese cotton was tried at one point and was insanely expensive and due to the soil really short staple so it led to less durable harder jeans that faded quickly but otherwise were inferior in every other way.
Uniqlo makes selvage denim for dirt cheap. I'm talking the same price as regular levis and sometimes cheaper if there's a sale. The fabrics are made by a japanese fabric mill, kaihara, as well. They make straighter and tapered cuts. From a pricing standpoint, it's the ideal starting place.
Seconding this - I actually found a pair of Uniqlo U selvedge in Copenhagen last year for $30 as it was out of season. Really high quality especially for the price.
Tcb is great I own three pairs, they’re a heritage brand so they mostly focus on replicating old denim from Levi’s to lee, so they’re definitely more known for their wider silhouettes if you wanna try a pair I recommend the 50s or 30s for a wider leg
Hey Drew! Another good option to start the selvedge denim journey is the Uniqlo ones. Good to understand if you like the selvedge feeling for a fraction of the price (around 40€ in europe)
This is a great list! As a long-time fan of N&F, Raleigh Denim, and PBJ, I learned a lot of new brands on this video. I would just add that “straight fit” often can be the looser fit that folks want these days. I’d love to see a video on Japanese Sashiko selvedge, that’s what I’ve loved the most over the years, although hard to find.
I just got my first pair of raw denim from them and I only have a few days in them, but I love the idea of creating your own fades and the community of raw denim already
thank you so much for doing this video on selvedge denim, I'm in the process of fading my big john jeans for almost 5 months. Continue spreading japanese Americana!
A brand I like is Left Field NYC. They also use Vidalia Mills and still have some White Oak offerings too. They're very 19th century American workwear influenced.
IDK why I feel this way for this video in particular, but this is the most welcoming UA-cam video I've ever watched. I feel so comfortable lol. Denim Recommendations: Berg&Berg. I haven't tried them personally(this will change soon), but I've heard good things about those jeans. They're normally 305 euros but they often host summer/winter sales which cut that price in half, which is something I'll definitely jump on. They're made in Italy, not Japan, but they're still selvedge. I like them alot specifically because they're high-rise jeans, and guys... high-rise IS THE MOVE.
you can get alot of these denim brands for less if you dont buy in stores that upsell them, cultizm / hinoya /denimio are my go to for a better deal as far as ive seen. Real good bargain brands that come to mind are Hinoyas in house brand named Burgus Plus and FOB factory , Japan Blue Jeans (i can name more but these are really nice)
Don’t forget about Gustin. They have a crowdsourcing business model, which allows you to preorder a pair at a wholesale price before it’s manufactured. 100% legit quality at a reasonable price.
Bro, Your videos hooked me on Selvege Denim. I really fell in love with a couple of Sugar Cane Okinawa’s, I think they have a perfect fit you, the texture of the denim is fantastic
I would recommend Left Field NYC. They have wider fits like the smokestack fit and the greaser fit. The smoke stack is a straight fir and the greaser has a slight taper but not much.
I totally agree on your last statement Japan is known for quality in all aspects of manufacturing their clothing is as well quality made the right way.
My denim go to was always Levi's and when I saw they were bringing a pair of selvedge jeans to their Made and Crafted collection in my favorite 502 cut I HAD to take the leap. I love their feel, deep blues and all the small details pit in by the artisans behind this product.
I'm hook on the momotaro jeans brand I myself would use these for special occasions. Because I feel the time and labor go into these unique pieces puts these on the same level as dress pants/slakes.
the black Elephant denim from N&F has been my favorite pair of jeans over the past couple of years. made sure i copped a couple pairs so i can run them into the ground
Love love love to see Japanese selvedge getting more attention! Got my samurai s510xx 15oz about 4 months ago and have worn them everyday since, one of the best investments for my wardrobe I have ever made fore sure!
No gate keeping here. Everyone is welcome to the selvedge denim community. Tate & Yoko is actually N&Fs flagship store in Canada so that’s why they carry a lot of N&F but also other brands too. When it comes to entry level selvage denim I actually think that the Uniqlo U selvedge denim is a solid pair of denim for those who want to spend only 60 dollars to see if they are into selvedge denim. Another budget brand is “Unbranded” which is actually a sister brand to N&F so they have similar cuts but a lot more normal fabrics and no branding of course. I am also very biased and love N&F too because they have such interesting and cool fabrics as well as a very reasonable price, I even watch their weekly live streams to see upcoming models. Oh and another awesome store to buy all kinds of selvedge denim on sale is Blueowl, they carry a lot of awesome selvedge denim brands and have seasonal sales, including for N&F. Happy shopping !
You finnaly ordered a pair of soso denim, can't wait to have your review on it. I'm sure you'll love. It generally takes 4 to 5 weeks. The four times I ordered I paid only 2 to 3 € of custom fees
I just started recently and bought my first pair of selvedge denim on a trip to Tokyo, they're a brand called Kojima Genes and they were about 12000 Yen ($120) love the wide fit and they're pretty comfortable
I received my first pair of selvedge denim jeans today. I chose the Naked & Famous Weird Guy Left Hand Twill and ordered them from Amazon. They fit almost perfect. The length is perfect with just enough for me to cuff them about 1 inch and still have them drape my shoes. The waist is a tiny bit big, but I went into this not really knowing how these would jeans fit. I measured the waist on a pair of my Levi's then ordered a corresponding size from N&F (FYI tag size 36 waist in Levis so I ordered Tag size 34 in N&F). The only thing that makes these jeans almost fit perfect and not fit perfect is the upper thighs are a little tighter then I like but not uncomfortable, I just have to get used to it. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase. I also purchased a pair of Unbranded Ub201s in the same size as the N&F jeans. I receive those jeans sometime next week.
naked & famous just released a new cut! It’s called “the true guy” which straightens from the knee to hem for a more relaxed traditional jean. Unlike their other cut the “weird guy” which has the, what I like to call, the “menswear taper” which a lot of denim brands do which many people like myself don’t like so this new cut from n&f might be a game changer for them
RGT and Grease Point are the best selvedge denim companies IMO... Soso is up there too specifically because you can customize, the only thing off is the measurements on the website are 0.5 bigger in all areas of the jeans than when you buy.
Zimbabwean Cotton can be softer and has longer fibers. Iron Jeart uses it. The long fibers allow IH to make 21oz+ denim without it being so hot and softer on the body.
Japan-based stores like Denimio and BEARS Tokyo can offer jeans at lower prices than U.S stores (e.g., $100-190 range) with free shipping on $150 orders.
even a more friendly budget brand is the UNBRANDED BRAND, same people from NAKED & FAMOUS, no branding and i think its oursourced factory - still good quality - i recommend 21/22oz for fast fading
Yes, Unbranded is basically a subsidiary of N&F. Japanese denim sourced by N&F, production outsourced to a Chinese contract manufacturer. Bang 4 the buck is great!
The early focus of TCB Corporation was primarily on contract manufacturing, with their clients being other renowned Japanese denim brands, such as FULL COUNT. However, TCB's management now believes that they possess the capability to establish their own brand. On the one hand, their products are undeniably of high quality, meeting the standards of Japanese denim. On the other hand, TCB's products are remarkably affordable, making them an excellent choice for first-time buyers of Japanese denim.
Late to the video, but I've been loving my brave star Sumo IV's. They're my first pair of raw selvage and the most comfortable jeans I've ever had after about a month lol.
any suggestions for a wider fitting selvedge denim jean? Have been looking for a nice pair of selvedge denim jeans, but I prefer a wider more loose look. Most of these brands are regular fitting. Any suggestions would be welcome!
Not a bad list but I'm not sure I'd agree with Bravestar. I feel like I'm always seeing quality control issues followed by bad customer service. I'd recommend Japan Blue over them
I am new to raw denim but I have some thoughts. I do have naked and famous left hand twill and they're great. I highly recommend. Most selvage denim I believe is Japanese, especially after cone mills shut down, but I don't think a lot of cotton is grown in Japan. And Naked and Famous jeans are usually made in Canada (except for their made in Japan line). So Canadian jeans made with Japanese selvage denim.
TCB for me are the best for people that are thinking of making the jump. they also have special retro accents on a lot of their products. just a really cool brand if that is such a thing. as for the Zimbabwe cotton i know that momo use it and im pretty sure Full Count do the same. full count are legends in the game!!
Fabric made in Japan with Zimbabwe cotton is still Japanese selvedge denim. Bronson is a great brand for heritage style clothing especially considering their prices. However, they are a Chinese brand, and I believe that their stuff are all made in China. Still a great brand though.
SoSo Brothers reminded me, Levi’s in SF used to do customization on their denim. Any jeans basically any patch, hundreds of embroidery options. And then it was gone 🙁
Yooooooo!! I was waiting for this video for so long man! Love selvedge denim, especially naked and famous. They have such a unique style that I am obsessed with!
not selvedge denim, but I vouch for No Faith Studios. The first pair of denim pants I've owned that have darts to shape the silhouette and the fabric is soft, but keeps that weight. Be warned: they're very pricey and also fit super long if you're short
Gen Z only likes wider jeans bc they've just entered their fashion identity and wider jeans are trendy at the moment. trend forecasters say slim jeans are coming back, and so gen z will adopt them as well
It’s funny how the younger generation gravitates towards wider fits. In the 90s, I had a short, stubby stature and I was buying JNCO jeans, size 36 when I was a true 30 at the time! And XL, sometimes XXL t-shirts lol At my age, especially after trimming down to a healthier weight, I do prefer a closer slim fit. Which can be annoying when most retailers these days are all about that “oversized” trend. I remember a time shopping at Zara or H&M and I could barely fit a medium shirt. Nowadays, even an X-Small fits like a Large! Smh…But I can’t be mad. It’s the 20-year re-cycle (not ‘recycle’!) of trends that continues to shine thru over the years. I’m happy the younger generations dig what I digged back then. You can thank us young GenX/older Millenials for your influence in fashion 😉 Oh, and I won’t lie…I’ve recently bought some of that stuff for nostalgic sake. Just only slightly oversized this time!
Problem with most selvedge denim brands, is that the sizing stops around a 38” - across the whole fashion industry, the big guys often get left out. I wear Naked and Famous as I can get a 42” waist. There is almost this impression that big guys don’t care. It is the case from standard jeans as well as even if they do the waist size, they don’t increase the back rise which means you show the ass crack which nobody wants.
I found Red Tornado out of China DOES make real selvege denim at a good price point 15 oz and of good qualit made in the old fashioned way on old looms that were refurbished and now being used to make good quality jeans
Wider cuts suit taller slimmer people, slimmer cuts are more flattering on shorter maybe less slim individuals. Same can be said for pleated pants in most cases.
Great video. Thank you for all the efforts and sharing these to us. Learning a lot of things in this channel. Style and lookbook wise I go to other channel for more inspirational outfits. Drew's outfit is not my cup of tea which is ok because style is always subjective.
Nice seeing the gate being opened a bit more to something that isn't meant to be another trend. I do have a clarification question though. What did you mean when you said TCB wasn't Japanese selvedge denim around 3:26?

The White Oak Cone Mills plant closed in 2017. The only mills in the USA that make selvedge denim now are Vidalia Mills and Proximity MFG.

Just only slightly oversized this time!
i didn't know naked and famous is entry level i already feel fancy wearing my selvedge levis i got on sale for 70 bucks
I found Red Tornado out of China DOES make real selvege denim at a good price point 15 oz and of good qualit made in the old fashioned way on old looms that were refurbished and now being used to make good quality jeans
great video as always Drew
Drew is actually the goat.
"Strike gold" purchased direct arent too expensive and very nice quality
Ya I have 2 pair of their shower slubby jeans. Really nice product imo.
Amazing Vid Drew!
Dont forget the brand EDWIN
Mr. Drew congrats on your new discovery of selvedge denim. It's time for you to look for ( Mister freedom & Real Mccoy's )
Also Stevenson Overall
hiroshi KATO the pen slim got 3 pairs now love the pants
Good Video. I have a collection and i like samurai and strike gold jeans and the german brand Blaumann
Wider cuts suit taller slimmer people, slimmer cuts are more flattering on shorter maybe less slim individuals. Same can be said for pleated pants in most cases.
The only 2 pairs of jeans I wear are the sugar cane Hawaii and Uniqlo U selvedge denim in black
My only problem aside from N&F is that these brands hardly ever carry pass size 38 & 40s
Great video. Thank you for all the efforts and sharing these to us. Learning a lot of things in this channel. Style and lookbook wise I go to other channel for more inspirational outfits. Drew's outfit is not my cup of tea which is ok because style is always subjective.
Thanks for the video!
Great video " BROTHER"
Soso ripped me off when they used to crowdfund a decade ago , bought two pair that they never delivered on and wouldn’t return my emails.
Dam I stopped Japanese Raw denim just over 10+ yrs ago gotta start again
Needed this🙏
if you have the Production and HR down, why not make an outstanding pair of pants? (2:40 reference) love that.
Nice seeing the gate being opened a bit more to something that isn't meant to be another trend. I do have a clarification question though. What did you mean when you said TCB wasn't Japanese selvedge denim around 3:26?
My Oni Denim 200s are my favorite wider fit selvage
I would live and die by Railcar Fine Goods, Greasepoint, Sugar Cane, and Viapiana
thanks drew
You getting me into it too Fam haha
Always was taught, you get what you pay for
I have found that is not always that true.
Yea Idk about that. That only really applies to certain things. Definitely not across the board
