I heard and saw this show the night before my father died. Talked to him the last time in my life and his life late that night, after the concert. He wondered why I was awake. Told him about the amazing concert. Next day he died. He was only 58. Still love him.
My father took me to my first Sting's show in 1993 when I was 15. He died in 99. Both he and my mom had lots of fun waiting for me outside the stadium, it was an adventure for them that night. He remembered and always laughed at it.
Haha, love how Copeland brings the tempo right up at the beginning of 'message in a bottle' You can just hear him thinking "Yeah, we're not playing it that slow, we're going fast and you're coming with me whether you like it or not!!"

A brand new decade - This was a high energy gig filmed for German television, just when the power-pop trio was first breaking out to huge international audiences. The first hit singles are here, in fascinating live renditions: 'Don't Stand So Close To Me', 'I Can't Stand Losing You', 'Walking On The Moon', 'Message In A Bottle', 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da', and others. So are live riffs on some deep, well-loved tracks from those benchmarks first three albums, including 'Deathwish', 'Truth Hits Everybody', 'Next To You', and their classic hit 'So Lonely'. The band is super tight and ultra aggressive here - and Sting's characteristic singing, high-pitched and reggae-influenced vocals cut right through like a hot knife in butter. It's 1980 - and The Police are changing rock and roll forever. This is a precedent setting concert. So dig it ya hear!
One badass tune after another just pounding away at your senses .. These guys were one the best ever and by far the most innovative. Thanks Police and thats for the post!!
Copeland was TEARING it up in the intro to this *"Voices Inside my Head"* JESUS!!!! Thats the best version iv EVER heard. I wish i can find the whole song done just like that somewhere.
I was 14 when I saw this concert. There had always been tickets for Pink Floyd, Zappa, Santana, but here everything was sold out. Knowing that pop and rock history was being written here, I was glued in front of the TV, while the master of the house was joking about the missing melodies and the bumbling around. Yes, those weren't the lines of the swing era anymore, catchy tunes, however. Every take. Rockpalast then became an institution for us, with 15, 20 people in front of the TV. In shared flats, U2, Rory Gallgher, guaranteed without parents. If I look at Rockpalast today, I don't understand the special thing about it anymore. Today I am like my father back then - almost, but I would never think of agitating against it. Because the Rockpalast shapes.
I saw it live from home too (in Sweden) - those all-night multi-band gigs were broadcast live on tv here too, around once a year. Four years later saw U2 in another fab Rockpalast show, also on UA-cam now.
What i absolutely enjoy about Sting's artistity is when he pre sing or finishes singing with phrases such ...(eee iooo h ooo eee i hooo , Roxenooo, or de doo doo doo de daa da daa Ihooo )...The guy is simply a genius

Agree! it has been circulating on tapes for years since it was broadcast on live TV across much of Europe. I know, I was there tp see it - the first time I saw the band live in concert.
Sting plays that electric bass like it's a lead guitar... similar to McCartney's approach. That gives the songs an immediate interesting character and a sort of Jazz personality. Pretty damned cool!

These Rockpalast concerts are among best ever recorded. Several great groups recorded some of their best stuff in 70's, 80's

How lucky people were back in the late 70s, to have two great English trios, the Police and the Jam.
Trios.
I know!! Too bad you can't SEE him do it, too!
I may be wrong, but I think they had always used 'Voices...' only as an Intro, like in this show.
Klover Samsa I'll always remember The Police as they sound right here. None of the excessive horns etc. just raw and real!
He was just warming up too! Hey Jeff Seitz, you got any of this on film?
