- Here is my translation and performance of the beautiful Greek hymn Agni Parthene in Old English.My first video upload as the Skaldic Bard was this hymn in Old Norse, and I thought to complement it with its cousin language Old English; though it is a (relatively) modern hymn, one can imagine the Anglo-Saxon and Norse Varangians in Constantinople being immersed in melodies such as this one during the Middle Ages.I made this version a little more upbeat as a) an experiment for fun, and b) to try to capture the virile energy of the Germanic tradition. I've also used an authentic Old English cursive font this time without diacritics.I hope you enjoy. Lyrics below in standardised Old English and Runic. @@veryunwisethewise unfortunately, I don't posses much sources for Old English, but I'm studying Old Saxon, and can advise you to look up the German books. There should be some translated in English, for sure, the rest I advise to seek in... Reddit, they always have good sources for studying. But that's about the grammar, for the vocabulary, the best choice (in my opinion) is Gerhard Köbler's Altenglisches Wörterbuch. Good luck!

@@mennyboy1528 It's both very different and very similar, it's probably the easiest language that you could learn if you're a native English speaker, other than the grammar which is complicated and similar to that of modern German.

Most of us Anglo Saxon English remained in England because the population of England was completely Anglo Saxon English we was rule over by the Norman’s but that it plus we Anglo Saxon English didn’t mix with the Norman’s some of our people joined our Viking cousins but most of our people stayed and that why we English our still here and the Norman’s our not but the only thing that remained in England what came from the Norman’s was the name Norman that it plus I do like the name good strong name but point I’m making is that we English no our history and origin better then any one else plain and simple and most of the time people get our history wrong because there uneducated and don’t have the historical facts

I read the Agape Vespers Gospel in Anglo-Saxon this year, fell absolutely in love with the language. This song was written by St Nektarios, patron saint of my parish.

Once again, a release in Old English is always a joy to see.
This tune is one of my favourites used in prayers, and despite my Anglican faith, it is a truly beautiful prayer.
Your work on the instruments are, as always, spot on. Matching your voice and your upbeat intention, for this one, perfectly and there aren’t many who can do that.
Your voice also, I have no idea how you harmonise in so many different tones - I can’t even sing in one! I do also think your arrangement skills are impeccable, something I’ve only come to appreciate through fiddling around with my friend’s equipment.

Read "The Fall of Orthodox England" (1066) by Vladimir Moss. It does worth it.
This slaps, but as a Prot I feel the same way about listening to this as I do Islamic music. It makes me very uneasy calling Mary our queen and asking her to save us from evil when that is what only Jesus can do.
Would "Cherubim" really be pronounced with /t͡ʃ/? I thought Old English read CH as /x/, with the /t͡ʃ/ pronunciation was later French influence.
It's just really as we inherited "cherub" with the modern English pronunciation, I kind of wanted to keep it despite likely French influence - I don't believe we see natively anywhere in OE anyway. That said, you're probably right and I was tempted to sing it as /x/, but I guess it was just a personal choice. I guess it is similar in a way to how Seraphim is spelt with in OE as well but pronounced /f/.
Anyway, friend, thanks for the support; just know we venerate Mary and do not worship her. I know this disagreement is centuries old, so we can leave it there - let's just go forth and live as piously as we can, eh?

It is natural to call the Mother of the King of the Kingdom of Israel the Queen.
But why? This is a Greek hym written by a contemporary saint in the 20th Century. There is no good reason to translate it into a dead language no one uses except in the far reaches of boring scholarship . We have perfectly good English translations.

@tharrenimorton2213 I asked my priest if it is alright to read the Gospel in Anglo-Saxon since it's a dead language, publicly for Agape Vespers in church. He said, "yes, there are plenty of Anglo-Saxon saints who are listening in heaven. Let's make St Bede happy." Someone else read the Gospel in Latin as well.
In addition to that, you're really spitting on all the hard work the Bard does. My kids love all of his songs and it's gotten them interested in learning cool old languages. So when they hear a song they sing every Sunday in a new language they get really excited. You really think that's a waste of time? Come on.
