When Cruise got the role the budget went up, however.
I really loved the part where they all turned to General Fromm and acted as if he was part of the plan in order to take him down as well haha. He was arrested and executed a year later so...
The video cuts out just before Stauffenberg mentions that Fromm turned a blind eye. They came to Fromm with their plan earlier in the movie, where he told them his allegiance was with the fuhrer, but he didnt arrest them for it. That's what the lieutenant meant when he said Fromm was as guilty as the rest of them, it wasn't just to take him down with them
In short, he did play a part in the plan by not arresting the conspirators, despite knowing of their plan before hand. That's why he expedited their execution, and why he was eventually executed himself
Fromm knew that their subordinates were plotting to kill Hitler, but he did not order their arrest. He was waiting for the events to unfold so he could decide which side he would jump in. So the conspirators were never entirely sure whether Fromm would join them. When Fromm learned that Hitler was still alive, he decided not to join the conspirators. If Hitler was killed, Fromm would probably would had join the conspirators. In fact, when Fromm was arrested, he actually apologized to one of conspirators explaining that he could not join them because he believed that Hitler was still alive and they were making a mistake (this dialogue is not shown on the movie, I read it in a book about the plot).
When Fromm went to gobbles to report his success in capturing and executing the traitors gobbles responded with "you were quick to dispose of your involvement in this" and fromm was executed
What really got Fromm in trouble is that he was ordered to keep the conspirators alive. Fromm ordering the executions WITHOUT Hitler's authorization is what got him in the end. It was said that after the conspirators were executed. Goebbels was waiting for him at home and ask him "why did you killed them? We wanted them alive."
At least Fromm was executed by firing squad, which was a quick death compare to others who were hanged by a piano wire which caused a slow, excruciating death...
Most likely Fromm did this to silence those who could testify against him. However, some historians have raised the possibility that Fromm might have done this to spare his subordinates from the Gestapo torture. The reality is that nobody knowns for sure what were his intentions.
@@rooseveltdarbey9493 He worked with them, he knew their relatives. They were actually hung by a thin hemp rope, tied to a meat hook. The common thought was that it was “piano wire” but the end result was the same. Horrible way to die...
Fromm's action of having the main plotters executed by firing squad as stated probably saved the plotters unspeakable pain and humiliation at the hands of the SS, SD and the Gestapo, as small as it may be it was a blessing, quick painless with a bullet, instead of having your finger and toe nails ripped out.
Beck's slow moving was the reason they were in that situation to begin with. If Beck and Olbrict had moved faster instead of waiting for hour's the attempt might have worked.

Lots of very good actors on the film. Excellent set design, strong script with real tension.Quite moving in its own way .Cruise did well in fact very well
At the same time i have a feeling General Fromm wanted hitler dead as well but was just so fearful of the consequences if the plan didnt follow through. Also he didnt want them handed over alive maybe because he didnt want them to go through torture? Plus too he mustve known he wouldve gotten in huge trouble and probably killed because he disobeyed hitlers orders to take them in alive. Maybe it was his way to show them his respects for their attempt. But who knows, just my theory.
General fromm did a great favor for the conspirator, fromm let the conspirator died with dignity rather than face the ss and people court. As ww2 came to an end, hitler became completely mad, he lash out at everyone, he kill people for the smallest mistake.
Yes for example one of the plotters General Hopner had the chance to commit suicide, but he decided to face the people court. He later regretted this decision based on the torture and humiliation he had to go through.
Staffenberg was right none of the plotters were soared and none of those who knew of it, but weren’t involved like Rommel wouldn’t be spared death either.
In the TNT (I think) movie “The Plot to Kill Hitler”...... yeah, exiting title, right? ...... Fromm is a more sympathetic character at the end. He walk up close to Stauffenberg and says “It is better for you here, now.” He knows he is saving them a much more grim future. That is also a good watch, FYI.
On 12 March 1945, Fromm was executed at the Brandenburg-Görden Prison by firing squad as part of the post-conspiracy purge. His last words before the firing squad were reported to be "I die, because it was ordered. I had always wanted only the best for Germany".
Hey, is the bald co-conspirator with the glasses (no, not the general, the guy beside the general) Professor Schenck from Downfall? He also played the surrendering SD officer talking to the Canadian in Black Book.
00:38 the officer behind and to the right of Von Quirnhein is played by Stauffenberg's grandson. When he enters the shot, it looks like his reaction is "oooo i want to see my grandfather".
I love how the little private speaks up “you had everything to do with this” that SS soldier was down for the cause from day one! Got to give it up to him. These guys knew what was right
Some historians have especulated that Fromm might have done this to spare his subordinates from the Gestapo torture. In fact, one of the conspirators called Erich Hoepner was given the chance to commit suicide, but he preferred to go through the trial. Afterwards he regretted his decision after being brutally tortured in prison before his execution.

RIP Tom Wilkinson. 😢
Terrence Stamps death always hit me hard, especially his final words.
FEGELELIN! FEGELEIN! FEGELEIN!
Mr. Ontological FEGELARSE!
Mr. Ontological NEIN NEIN NEIN
Narancia best waifu ICH GLAUBE!!!
Damn it you beat me to it
In what movie did fegelein happened?
Any last message
Conspirator: may I use the washroom?
.....fine
At least they weren’t tortured. It looks like he’s trying to save his own skin but saves them from the peoples court.
Not a huge Tom Cruise fan, but in this movie he really shines.
Such a class movie so under rated and Tom cruise was really good in it so different to every other movie he usually makes.
Tom Wilkinson (General Fromm) - such a great supporting actor contribution to every film he’s done (Michael Clayton, The Patriot and many others).
RIP.😢
Amazing group of actors in one scene!
this is one of tom cruise' BEST movies
An alternate universe where Fegelein didn't pursue the art of antics.
I love how he shows up in almost all movies that have some kind of focus on the German army in ww2. And you for also seeing it :P
Yes
@@coolname545 Portraying German officers seems to be Thomas Kretschmann's specialty
Beck actually tried to shoot himself twice, until some officer was ordered to put him out of his misery.
Beck's slow moving was the reason they were in that situation to begin with. If Beck and Olbrict had moved faster instead of waiting for hour's the attempt might have worked.
@@rooseveltdarbey9493 It was doomed the moment they failed to kill Hitler.
@@brucetucker4847 only Hitler can kill Hitler
"Get on with it." Man that´s cold.
RIP Mr Tom Wilkinson 😢 🙏 💔
Rip tom wilkinson a incredible talent gone 😢😢😔😔
Colonel Staufenberg a man of honour.
Not a fan of Tom Cruise BUT I believe he did an outstanding job in this picture.
dont you just love how the movie sound is soft, so you crank up the volume and than u get this outro sound that is so loud your eardrums start bleeding!!,
HORRIBLE editting!!!.
also this movie should have been in german like the movie " downfall" or " der untergang" germans talking english with american accents always takes away from the movie.
Out of the color of uniforms, I think the colonel light gray uniform is the best one from the different shades of olive greens.
His color looks almost black too. They used a lot of Italian gaberdine to make privately tailored uniforms.
Why does Thomas Kretschmann always get type casted into his historical roles dealing with the Third Reich? Does he he just have that “soldierly” and “from another era” vibe about him?
I guess so. Either way, he does a damn good job.
Fromm killed them to try to save himself and it didn’t work but to his credit he did save them from being tortured hung from piano wire and strangled to death
And Fromm was not spared. He was executed by firing squad less than a year later.
I love how there's a bunch of actors from Downfall as well.
Hahaha
0:03 thank you script writers for not using the "It will be an honor to have died with you." ... "It's an honor to have lived with you." Last Samurai and 300 already over played.
0:25 Tom Cruise vs Fegelein. Mission trully impossible.
Bill Nighy, Kevin McNally, David Schofield, and Tom Hollander all appeared in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.
I bet Bill Nighy fears death now!
They had like half the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean in this movie.
talk about foreshadowing with the last comment!
You cut out the best part, Fromm losing that battle of eye contact against Stauffenberg
1:49 Carmine Falcone is savage
Ryan Smith not really savage as much a desperate . He had to kill them as soon as possible or he would be exposed
That is British General Cornwallis.
Fromm a traitor and a coward who was a resistance fighter. He betrayed them to save his own skin but yet he was shot as well.
Why is that? Karma? Or maybe hitler has no use for fromm anymore
Thomas Kretschmann is the only German actor who fits the part.
yeah i agree it better to have german face filming german history than german history filming by people that don't speak German and don't even look like German
I'm glad that Lt.Heiften spoke with some courage
That will be all major!
Love how Terence Stamp just casually asks for a pistol "for personal reasons".^^
Lots of very good actors on the film.
Excellent set design, strong script with real tension.Quite moving in its own way .Cruise did well in fact very well
I would like a little Caesars pizza.....for personal reasons....
Thank you for showing the world we were not all like him
Fromm was the US equivalent of a 4 star general. He should’ve retired in early 1944. He’d’ve lived to rebuild the German Armed services.
I love the way Fromm shuts up the major 😂
At the same time i have a feeling General Fromm wanted hitler dead as well but was just so fearful of the consequences if the plan didnt follow through. Also he didnt want them handed over alive maybe because he didnt want them to go through torture? Plus too he mustve known he wouldve gotten in huge trouble and probably killed because he disobeyed hitlers orders to take them in alive. Maybe it was his way to show them his respects for their attempt. But who knows, just my theory.
Fromm was a fanatic
Why do I keep hearing "Damn him. Damn that man!"
Any government willing to sacrifice it's people till no one is left is not a government worth dying for.
"You have been in a damn hurry to get your witnesses below ground" Goebbels said to Froome.
... Goebbels said calmly
Despite how Joseph Goebbels is portrayed during this period, he was no idiot knew from the start Fromm had even a small role in the attempted coup.
Historians suggest that this scene never actually took place. The events around this time are largely speculation but makes for good drama.
Is that Fegelein? Lmao... Fegelein! Fegelein! FEGELEIN!
That last part was right for sure. God bless all our world war 2 veterans
*"no one will be spared..."*
He also played the surrendering SD officer talking to the Canadian in Black Book.
yes he is
00:38 the officer behind and to the right of Von Quirnhein is played by Stauffenberg's grandson. When he enters the shot, it looks like his reaction is "oooo i want to see my grandfather".
Shocking scene, very strong.
Pianowire's is one helluva remedy
I love the part were they said even fromm was part of it🤣
Well yeah, because he was. That's why he ordered the conspirators to be executed against the wishes of Hitler; so he could hide his involvement
He was, they were relying on his command of the Reserve Army to execute the takeover
“I’d like a pistol so I may air out this whole room.”
It just occurred to me that this is set in 1944 but the soldiers seem to have early war uniforms
Working in the main Army staff offices in Berlin would I'm sure grant a better quality of uniform than a private at the front...
I love how the little private speaks up “you had everything to do with this” that SS soldier was down for the cause from day one! Got to give it up to him. These guys knew what was right
Brave men in a dark time !!! To some hero's to others traitors !!
Maybe Americans should have been brave when their war machine was destroying the middle East over WMDs that never existed.
@ 0:33. I am sure he played Fegelein in the German movie ‘Downfall’ about the last days at the bunker.
:34 you can tell the major didn’t want to arrest them... he knew who were the good guys.
Actually major Remer was an ardent anti semite who survived the war and continued to push national socialism the rest of his life.
Remer was a true NS believer. If he felt uneasy it was probably only at the thought of killing fellow German officers.
Fromm wanted them hushed up as quickly as possible. But it wasn't quick enough.
He should of known better than to try and win against Fegelein with his antics
All those great actors and also Tom bleedin Cruise
*"And the Kernel who's name I will not mention."*
My list of British actors who wore the German uniform enhancing their resumee just got alot longer.
The casting is good: two of the best actors from Der Untergang.
Ruhe in Frieden, Graf von Stauffenberg
RIP Tom xx great actor
