For those of you who question the ref's calls, that ref is Eduardo Biao. He is one of IBJJF's BEST refs and he trains all of IBJJF's staff. He ref's and teaches BJJ officiating for a living and is not a recreational ref. He is a 3rd degree black belt and knows his BJJ. I would give him the benefit of the doubt.
Yes Alvarolz.I guess because BJJ used to be geared mainly for self defense When I trained in the nineties defending strikes was part of our practice. We were also encouraged to crosstrain with guys of different styles like Judo to understand the game. Gracie bros were black belts in Judo- Part of their game for sure. Now that sport BJJ has become so popular this sitting strategy can be much more effective because your always using 4 limbs and don't have to worry about punches or kicks.
cyborg never secured the top position after that "sweep", keenan came up with a near pass, went to take the back and then ended up on bottom. had keenan stayed down and cyborg came up when keenan went for that initial pass, then cyborg would've deserved to get the 2 points. upon re-watching it, the ref did call it wrong.
Problem with the sweep was that it wasn't a sweep. The sweep was countered and then Cyborg was defending the back attack. He didn't come on top from the actual sweep. The sweep was engaged and then became disengaged when it got countered. Then Cyborg came on top out of defense from a back attack when he was forced to turtle. That's not a sweep. Should've been advantage for Keenan, though he was about to get passed at the end. Why black belt matches are 10 minutes.
Great Match !!!! Keenan is on fire... he looked the better man in this match, fought better than DJ Jackson in the final against Roberto Abreu... at least in my opinion it was better to watch this match than the finals..
This has to be in the top 10 for worst starts to a BJJ contest ever. Both of them just go and sit down. Can someone press restart on the BJJ competition scene please?!?
You know, that's simple, refreshing and REALLY smart, first time I read this specific suggestion in all the years reading discussion about guard pulls on boards and stuff. This would really settle it.. I REALLY hope somebody can present an idea like yours to Ibjjf or Adcc pro, it would got my vote every day of every week.
Also: You could argue Cyborg went to his knees to try to sweep (which would mean 2 points for Cyborg and no advantage for Keenan) but I didn't see it that way, I think Cyborg was evading Keenan's pass. I've refereed at the IBJJF mundials and attended the rules seminar something like 10 times. This doesn't mean I'm right, just where I'm coming from.
really good classic match...love both guys. Makes sense that keenan was already a beast at brown belt...still got that Lloyd Irwin logo on the gi too...musta been before he found out what a fucking nut job Lloyd Irwin was :/
I am pleased you can see the logic of my suggestion for a better guard pull rule. Perhaps someone from IBJJF or ADCC will read and consider it. We should also circulate the idea on the various BJJ sites to see if it can gain some traction.
This is not IBJJF its UAE JIU JITSU Championship Keenan was the best Purple Belt and is the best Brown Belt and will be one of the best black-belt but he lost this one sweep 2 points for Cyborg.
At 1:45 Keenan was stuck in Cyborg's RDLR/Tornado guard, Keenan attempted to pass to the back from this position. Since he never got back control and Cyborg ended up in the top position at 2:06 Cyborg was awarded 2 points for the sweep.
That is true. Even so, the alleged criminal actions of Maldonado and Schultz should not taint Lloyd Irvin's school. According to Lloyd Irvin, Maldonado had only been training at the school for 7 months prior to the alleged rape incident. Schultz had only been training at the school for one month prior to the alleged rape incident.
I did not say take away ALL guard pulling. I said take it away to begin the match. This would mean a take down or throw would need to occur at the beginning of the match. After that, people can guard pull every chance they get. This would also greatly improve all of our Jiu-Jitsu. So many people pull guard mainly because they have no stand-up skills at all. BJJ, and fighting in general, is NOT just about sitting down.
Guess you do not make too many points by throwing someone, and because in the training basically everything starts from the ground, hence the trend. I personally think there should be some more up fighting, as it used to be (like judo).
I disagree. Then it would be more about whos better at takedowns, like a judo/wrestling match. if you can't pull guard, then that totally defeats the purpose of bjj. Do you disagree?
In my opinion, Keenan was in the process of passing Cyborg's guard when Cyborg went to his knees. At this point, it's an advantage for Keenan (article 5.7.2 ibjjf rulebook, first bullet point), and the guard no longer exists (therefore a sweep is impossible). Keenan also should/could have been awarded a second advantage for the choke if the referee believed cyborg was in real danger.
Points are not awarded from the takedowns initiated from the knees under IBJJF rules. Aside from the time, everything including the point system is all IBJJF based. Two points were misawarded. If you are forced to turtle and get the takedown, it is not points. I lost my third match at this years mundials bc I did not know this rule.
I think if you pull guard without grip fighting you should definitely lose a point. If you pull guard and immediately (less than a second) throw a bonda fide submission or sweep you should keep your point.
SeaTeaSnow Lol i agree with you if you say that to a white belt competition. Cyborg and Keenan? These guys already have enough takedown and other abilities to deal in real fight. They are doing double guard because 1. they both prefer guard, 2 it's a serious competition they both need to get into their best positions, 3 cyborg and keenan are no jokes. they are the best in the world. Watch keenan's recent video on smaller competition. I really surprise seeing him taking opponent down with kouchi gari, and so on. 4. even in that guard position, leg locks are widely open. Just like the guy under replied you, they can put heel hooks in any of that position in real fight. BJJ rule doesn't allow heel hooks, and it is difficult for these high level players to put leg locks to each other. And me myself even crushed a guys arm with flying armbar in the subway station, and double legged and knee on bellied another guy. Is Sport BJJ far from real fight? It works well. Very well
I agree. For starters, guard pulling at the start of the match should not be allowed. It is just stupid and comical to watch guys, often both guys, sit down to start a fight. Stopping this would also prevent a great many of the tie scores since somebody would have to score a take-down or throw at the beginning of the match. Next, it is ridiculous to get only a lousy advantage for applying a serious and sustained submission hold that eventually fails. It happens all the time.
Cyborg wasn't passed though. He still needed to clear the inside knee. That can be difficult to do if you've ever been in that position against a Gumby flexible guy.
man this is stupid. no finish. next match. no finish. next match. no finish.... im afraid ill get impotent by watching all those non finished fights... but seriously there should be a tournament with rules like "10 minutes. who gets the MOST subs, wins. if someone taps, restart immediately "
You don't think they would go for the kill if given the chance? They are playing at a tournament. Not rolling around for fun. If they make a mistake they pay for it immensely. Judo competitions does end after ippon.
ZiulzP im just saying they would strategize different. oh well i thought an ippon would just give you points, and then it goes on:( well thats how i meant it anyway for the format i suggested
I am sure they would strategize different but you have to consider this scenario: If they were going to go ONLY for most kills/submissions then you might end up seeing more people playing even more defensive after the very first sub.
I think Cyborg could tare Keenan apart without even using technique, Cyborg looked like he was warming up or something in this match but who knows, it´s just hard to imagine that he couldn´t do better, he was hardly trying to wrestle...
If you don't like people pulling guard, doing 50/50 or trying to stay on bottom then you definitely do not understand jiu jitsu and need to focus on judo or wrestling.
I agree that there should have been no points for the reversal from the back, but i personally would have gave points for a pass. Cyborg was passed, Keenan is just extremely flexible. No points cause his long legs wrapped around around and barley touch a hip. haha, but Keenan is going to be the first Lyod Irvin champ Black belt.. that kid is talent
It appears from Lloyd's letter that you are correct in that the case was not dropped by the prosecutor. It appears that the case may have gone to trial and Lloyd was found not guilty. He never said in this open letter that you referred me to that he was really up for it but unable to get an erection. Rather, he states that he did not rape anyone in this 1989 incident. I believe him too. I don't believe that he is a threat to any woman including any female member of my family.
you do realise that any decent sport grappler would destroy an untrained man if it went to the ground with only a basic defense against punches, its very rudimentary but needs to be practised which 90% of bjj schools never do on an ongoing basis
He was accused. He was not convicted. Remember, one is innocent until proven guilty in this country. He may be completely innocent of this alleged crime. The prosecutor did not believe there was any evidence so that is why the case was dropped against him. He should not be tainted with this allegation for the rest of his life either.
This is what's wrong with BJJ. There's nothing martial about two guys sitting around playing with each others pants and rolling around with their butts in the air. The rules need to change.
I doubt either one of these guys would slide onto their butts in a real fight but even if they did they'd be ripping the guys knees apart with a heel hook in the next five seconds. The difference between someone who practices grappling for hours every day versus an untrained person is too big to say something like they'd get beat up doing that on the streets. No they wouldn't. Starting from any position they'd submit an untrained person in seconds. ANY POSITION.
I love Jiu Jitsu as much as I can love anything, but I think this point system is a major bastardization of the art. Watch KC's first round match with Kit Dale at IBJJF '13 in every way Kit won that match but the decision favored KC. And honestly I find these type of point based matches boring to watch, no one goes for good subs because if they fail your opponent will get too many points for the defense.
Why is keenan always playing 50/50 guard? It annoys me so much. I think it's lame and it shows you're scared to try and pass. I hate those miyao matches. So boring. Such horrible demonstration of what bjj is supposed to be. If I watched this the first time I heard about BJJ I would think it was all about footsie.
One of the most boring BJJ fights I have ever seen. Cyborg and Keenan can be two of the best BJJ athletes in the world but it is a disgrace when they decide to play the points game. 6 minutes of no ONE submission attempt.

at their level, one mistake and it's over. Not everyone is Jeff Glover and will do crazy like let you mount him. I am not sure if he does it when points are on the line but he is confident enough in his jitz that he will give you anything damn near, work out of it and sub you. But you have a young hungry lion with and old one that certainly tried to get passed KC's guard but he was working that worm guard. He tried to work his game. Cyborg wasn't having it. It was a good match in my opinion. Good battles.

No wonder why Polaris and other submission only contests came about
where was the 2 points given?
Is are the ADCC trials or a different tornament trials for the same org? some one!!!
cyborg never secured the top position after that "sweep", keenan came up with a near pass, went to take the back and then ended up on bottom.

Bad call from the Ref. Keenan won that match on advantages. Both guys are amazing.

two guys pulling guard at the same time...awesome :)
+Manne Feroz lol I thought the same thing
Why is an experienced black belt scared of a 21 year old brown belts guard?
This was a surprisingly cuddly match.
Double guard pull is caring.
That is true. Even so, the alleged criminal actions of Maldonado and Schultz should not taint Lloyd Irvin's school. Both these guys are awesome competitors but did they absolutely have to play the foot grab game to begin the match?
+LJSJIUJITSU why does it matter.. it only lasted 1 minute anyway. plus the berimbolo game is interesting once you actually understand it.
After the first 2 points Cyborg played it safe and just held on.
I disagree. Then it would be more about whos better at takedowns, like a judo/wrestling match. if you can't pull guard, then that totally defeats the purpose of bjj. Do you disagree?

So many comments about points and advantages...............
Yeah beacause it is easy to submit Keenan... Even Rodolfo couldn´t submit him. I wanna see you all talkers fighting Keenan Cornelius and submit him.
@@Bigislatndbigfoot Keenan would probably strike and not rely on all of it tho especially if his level is that high damn
There is no bad call. Everything is scored the way it should be.
I think if you pull guard without grip fighting you should definitely lose a point.
If you pull guard and immediately (less than a second) throw a bonda fide submission or sweep you should keep your point.
They should use their own point system since they aren't the IBJJF.
SeaTeaSnow Lol i agree with you if you say that to a white belt competition. Cyborg and Keenan? These guys already have enough takedown and other abilities to deal in real fight. It's only gay if you make eye contact with the scoreboard/clock.
In IBJJF, sweep or takedowns that someone does from their turtle guard do not get points. In this sense, the turtle is not a guard.
not boring to me, very technical fight, cuz these guys who sit down alot are VERY hard to deal with
I agree. For starters, guard pulling at the start of the match should not be allowed. It is just stupid and comical to watch guys, often both guys, sit down to start a fight. Diving leg drag from north south. That's a first.
That wasn't a sweep.
I stand corrected. You may be right about that.
Dave Stanton
I agree...
Cyborg wasn't passed though. He still needed to clear the inside knee. That can be difficult to do if you've ever been in that position against a Gumby flexible guy.
My point is, if you get the sweep, you'll still be up by one point. If you get the sub, you just won, so it doesn't matter.

but seriously there should be a tournament with rules like "10 minutes. who gets the MOST subs, wins. if someone taps, restart immediately "
Issue with what you are saying is that you are assuming that professionals are willing to get tapped that fast.
ZiulzP
the rules i suggested would atleast make them go for the kill while defendling less.
judo does not end after the first ippon too, if i am right
You don't think they would go for the kill if given the chance? They are playing at a tournament. Not rolling around for fun. If they make a mistake they pay for it immensely. Judo competitions does end after ippon.

yes unfortunatly i have seen the brazillians get favored in these tourneys against americans its like they hate when an american beats a brazillian
If you don't like people pulling guard, doing 50/50 or trying to stay on bottom then you definitely do not understand jiu jitsu and need to focus on judo or wrestling.
