+ChiStriker N Usually you want to Backstep before the opponent builds a base on their elbow or hand. What I saw, was Gary was already up on his knees, and Keenan posted his head on the mat and did something inbetween an Uchi Mata and Rolling Kneebar to toss Gary back down and land in the Backstep position.
+Art of Pressure Fighting Tonon's skill has grown by unbelievable amounts since 2014, though. But yeah, position before submission is a good way to work.
It wasn't. Tonon beat Ralek who is 5lbs lighter than keenan. You're telling me that 5lbs difference can negate all of Tonon's positional skill? Bullshit. Lighter people win open weight all the time.
Wow! Seeing what Garry can do to the highest level blackbelts only makes this performance that much more impressive for Keenan. A total blowout, incredible!
@@Runejitsu Because of the guy telling Keenan what he should do all the time. I agree with Eugene. I know everybody wants their friends to win, but this kind of stuff makes the fight ugly. Just let the men fight. Let them have their credit. It is a fight of one versus one, so everybody else should be silent, you know?
This match is honestly hilarious. Both times Garry is in the double-under stack pass position he front flips. The first time, Keenan forced it, but the second time was his decision 😂
Would like to see these two in a re-match now. I think it would turn up very differently. I think Garry's skillset and talent has exploded during the last two years, not taking anyhting away from Keenan who's a top of the top grappler himself. But a re-match would be in place soon I think.
Damn, Keenan literally wiped the floor with Garry. I would like to see an EBI rematch. I imagine Garry would be repeatedly shooting for those heel hooks and toe holds.
And to think, Kron Gracie went to hell and back going up against Gary. I mean, Kron choked him, but still, it was a life & death match. Keenan straight up cut through Gary's defense like butter.
I feel you, but then I can imagine Tonon having an easier time with guys equally as big as Keenan. I think Keenan's style enhances his physical advantages.
My FAV vids are Garry losing because you have to be at the FUCKING PINNACLE of your game to shut that shit down. I need to work on top game and basically there's nothing better than people who can hold down the mongoose.
First time seeing this, I know Gary was more concerned with submissions than points here but damn Keenan just had all the answers and finally got close to a sub at the end. Never seen him perform so impressively before.
This performance by Gary is nothing like his style today. He's been a beast lately. I wonder what a match between these two would be like now. Much respect to Keenan and ATOS though. 2 high level tacticians.
***** Domination by points, but I think Garry was pretty much only going for the submission, I think the fight would've been much closer if Garry was more focused on not giving up position, but it would've been a much more boring fight with no that many positions for us to see. I'm not sure who would win in a submission only match.
I would really like to see sideline coaching outlawed. Your ability to see what is going on and adjust is part of the skill set. Keenan giving a clinic on stepping out of X-Guard. Don't know what the IBJJF rules are on leg attacks but clearly nothing of interest to Tonon. Problem with matching against Keenan is he doesn't fight like a big guy so there's not the normal technical edge for the lighter fighter.
I don't think that little child can beat Keenan even today. Keenan is much more colorful skill wise also is naturally bigger. Garry that dude alwasy just go for leg locks and sometimes RNC. Good leg lock defenders such as Keenan and MG would just mob the floor with him anytime. I don't really think size difference is the worse enemy in Jiu jitsu unless there is a super big gap. But Keenan is not just about his size, is more about skill. Garry is a good player too but his style is not to fight. He literally plays around like a kid. Keenan and MG both would absolutely destroy him any time anywhere any day.
Hahaha That's his pupil. Why should I mention that when talking about Keenan vs Gary Tonon not Gordon Ryan. Also, Keenan was on top all the time before he finally got heel hooked. It was a superfight without a time limit, therefore Gordon luckily won. In fact, in other matches or street fight scenario, Gordon would be a dead person. I understand it's a sport jiu jitsu but I don't think styles stalling around for about one hour and thirty minutes and get a win is that impressive. Jiu jitsu become very popular because people saw it was one of the ultimate martial arts for effective self-defense regardless of size. But, it has become a bit of a joke in recent years. Who would like to have you back in a real life threatening situation? Keenan or Gary? Gary won't do a shit for your hahaha cos he would lie down and would finally get sockerkicked.
John2corner Your post makes very little sense. What does any of this have to do with real fighting or a life and death situation? Nothing. You were trashing Gary and praising Keenan and I simply pointed out that Gary's student has recently defeated Keenan in a fair BJJ match which is relevant. Based on that I'm sure Gary has a great chance of beating Keenan sometimes as well.
bonesjuones melo Who exactly is it that can "man handle" Keenan, since the current open weight world champ, Buchecha, could only beat him by a few points the last time they fought?
Cary Rumley did you see that roll? Keenan took Marcelo's back and managed to stay there, and _no-freaking-body_ takes Marcelo's back. However, Marcelo shut down Keenan's attacks repeatedly. I would have liked to see a Marcelo in competition shape take on Keenan in a no-gi battle. It would have been crazy!!!
IBJJF and EBI/sub-only (where Garry got his fame I think) are very different. I think the general level of grappling in IBJJF is much higher than sub-only and other competitions (mostly no-gi)
Keenan played by the rules of the tournament, if it was submission only he would have played differet. It's Garrys fault for playing by the wrong rules...
Cutting edge modern sport BJJ. It's amazing how sports can progress through the sharing of information and the drive that competition can inspire. But I do understand the concern that many of the Gracies voice, and that is sport Jiujitsu spends a lot of time training in positions that in a fight would leave you very vulnerable to strikes. I wonder how Jiu Jitsu might have progressed if the community had emphasized the self defense element more. That being said, watching Keenan and Garry battle is pretty fricking awesome.
***** Really? If Keenan held and stalled it would've been more like 7-11 points or so. It's not like Keenan passed, got the mount, the back, then held it the whole time. Every time he lost position he fought to get it back. Plus Keenan went for subs. He went for a mounted triangle, a wristlock, 2 armbars, and a side choke, and he had 2 pretty tight darce/brabo chokes, and scored 23 points. Garry Tonon is a beast at submission defense. Not only is he tough inside of submission holds but he's rarely out of position to the point where he ends up in them to begin with.
+Roland Kennedi NoGi Worlds is an IBJJF comp. That means no heel hooks and no reaping the knee. Tonon's leg lock game relies heavily on those techniques.
Looks to me like he wanted to bring everyone back to the middle of the mat, but Keenan took advantage of him being off balance and swept him right after.
Damn, what a treat to watch, yet what a one-sided match! Keenan made Gary look like an amateur and there's nothing amateur about Gary. He's scrappy, has a huge gas tank, highly skilled and trains hard, yet Keenan totally dominated and nullified. That's some next level Jiu Jitsu there.
Fractalesque gonna have to disagree that KC made the GT look amateur. They both looked like gods battling it out on a Greek mountain. KC was next level for sure but neither looked amateur.
Its just funny how someone is shouting for him what to do. I respect what they do but come on lets be honest when someone is shouting for you what to do it get easier
Keenan's rolling-whizzer counter to the half-guard back take attempt around 8:08 is super slick
I didn't pick up on it when I first watched it, your right that was really slick.
+Liam Caine agreed :)
+Liam Caine I noticed that too. Had to rewind that a few times. I back-step a lot but that transition never occurred to me. Can't wait to try it out.

I think that was a rolling knee-bar attempt by Keenan
You have to be amazing just to not get tapped by this level of jiu jitsu. A victory for both in my opinion.
A bit less victory if you lose by 2-23
Keenan = position before submission
Tonan = submission before position
+Art of Pressure Fighting they both have incredible heart tho

these guys have faught atleast 5-6 times and keenan always beats gary easy. Even right now I dont think gary can touch keenan
I beg to differ. Time will tell if we'll ever find out or not.
i guess soo but i see aj agazarm beating gary before gary beats keenan
Adam Fredriksson thes was the rematch. Tonon lost by armbar the first time
andre galvao coaching keenan
I was just gonna say his coach is super on point! That explains it.
And how! Keenan is a totally coachable dude too!
Damn I'd love to see a current rematch. Love watching these two roll.
Damn, Keenan literally wiped the floor with Garry.

yea, but man if heel hooks are allowed tonon is a ninja with that shit
My mistake, forgot no heel hooks. That's like Marcelo entering a competition and not being allowed to use the arm drag.
Rick James lol yeah thats a good comparison
size matter bro
you can see how well keenan listens to his coach.
Man,that was complete domination.I wasn't expecting that,Tonon usually seems more explosive.
that little music at the end tho...
Jesus, I've never seen Tonon relegated to defense. It's crazy how Keenan was able to maintain such good positioning.

lol... pause?

This coach is the king of telling people what to do. (just found out he's andre galvao)
Absolutely crazy to see Garry's guard get blown through over & over, fuck man
Keenan is so fun to watch. Love his style, so cerebral.
Tonon was game all match even being way smaller. Nice match!
23 to 0 Keenan you ran circles around him. BJJ Genius.
Some amazing defense from Gary here. Well done.
Is that Andre Galvao who filmed this and giving instructions?
+Derek Jones yes sir
Keenan’s back taking abities are so insane, I know Jordan Ryan submitted him but he’s my favorite to watch

Damn. That's a dominance.
no, that's 40 pounds weight difference
rodluvan1976 hes dominated Toonon everytime even when they were alot closer in weight, in GI and NoGi.

great match, just would like to see a finish. Winning by points is cool but a finish is so much more definitive. again great match a fan of both.
Gary Tonon got MANHANDLED like a white belt !!!!
when I saw tonon wrapping his legs around Keenan at 0:45 I thought: this wont end good :)
Ceron Gul i think in such situation for Tonon the best way to swip Keenan is to grap one of his hand, after his wrapping legs and swip
Tonon didn't have his leg lock system in this match. Wonder how he'll do now against Keenan in a rematch?
After all these years Refs wearing suits Crack me up!!
I took a leglock seminar with Gary Tonon in California.
Complete domination from MAH NIGGA.jpeg

that was impressive keenan
that weight different is not joke, Garry would win if they were the same weight. Keenan uses his weight against him. Nice match

Current and future kings.
I'd like to see them fight in EBI rules or in an untimed submission only match.
Garry knew his back was about to get taka as soon as he grabbed hs legs
Keenan looks a lot bigger than Garry. People shouldn't be so harsh on Garry.
Wonderful to see Keenan go for a wrist lock at 3:15
Amazing. What is the submission that Keenan is attempting towards the end - Anaconda choke? thx
It's a darce choke. An anaconda would be if Keenan gets his left arm in instead of his right.
It's a darce choke. An anaconda would be if Keenan gets his left arm in instead of his right.

well, wow. Amazing by both, but wow to Keenan.
Wow I'm surprised how much better Keenan is....
8:45 why did Tonon forward roll like that? what was the point?
Spinning shit
Guard passing, but Kenan stuffed it.
gary has a hard guard game and keenean is a very good positioner. amazing match. BUT i dont like these point matches.
Is that Galvao coaching Kenan?
Both are excellent grapplers but Keenan is way heavier. Doesnt take anything away from Tonon
he looks like he's just playing around that's skill right there osss
Man I know you're the bigger guy and all but Tonon got completely nullified in this.
Garry literally doesnt try half of the time lmfao
Always a trip to see the refs with Suits and no shoes! This isnt a corporate event ,put on a tshirt and board shorts..
what does keenan out-weigh him by 20 pounds or so?
Why is Keenen not competing at EBI? Because he doesn't think he can win it until the end? I'de love to c how he does!
I heard he will be in the next EBI
yeah, i herd, but he pulled out. At the time he wasnt announced to be in ebi and than 1 month later boom!
Was the last time you two faced each other was in that one (unnamed) Kumite as brown belts?
Five grappling
Pretty sure it was at some Five Grappling no gi event. I believe they both had their black belts by then.
I would love to see Marcelo G. roll with either of these guys.
+Sean Redman There is a video of Garcia and Keenan rolling on UA-cam.
What do you think the weight difference is here?
Wow, this Keenan guy manhandled Tonin effortlessly.
There’s levels to ALL this shit!!!!
was this b4 Tonon started going crazy with the leg locks,?? He doesn't seem to be hunting them in in this match as aggressively as he does now.
+Roland Kennedi Yes it was, i still think keenan beats him though
yeah me too
+Roland Kennedi
NoGi Worlds is an IBJJF comp. That means no heel hooks and no reaping the knee. Tonon's leg lock game relies heavily on those techniques.
Oh ok, thx man ,
+rockofullr he wasn't really doing them to the level he is now, either
what was the sweep keenan did at 5:40?
I like gary's attitude. So did keenan
no weight classes? Keenan is clearly bigger and heavier
It's open weight
No leg reap?
5:42 ok can someone explain what Garry is trying to do here? looks like an attempted crab ride but wrong position so he just ended up in mount
Looks to me like he wanted to bring everyone back to the middle of the mat, but Keenan took advantage of him being off balance and swept him right after.
holy shit
Kenan completely dominated that guy!
I think Keenan would be much better if he hit them weights 👀
What a terrible format for guys this like to compete, though.
6:48 is there a Name for this move? It looks unreal.^^
kipping escape
Who is coaching?
Seems like Keenan only had to walk around into side control? What am i not noticing?
i feel the same...
Gary gave Keenan the start of the marcelo pass. Keenan just finished it. Brain fart for gary.
Two best in the world at that age
Crazy how much better Keenan is then Gary...
Keenan is filthy 🔥😮💨
I wonderwhy people in the corners always shouting about moves, position player should do, well the opponent hear it too and anticipate lol

coaching should not be legal.
This was Gary prior to joining the Danaher Death Squad...
Tonon got smashed regardless of the size.
Jiu-Jitsu for lanky people like me! Thank the gods
Damn, 23-2!
Its just funny how someone is shouting for him what to do. I respect what they do but come on lets be honest when someone is shouting for you what to do it get easier
