While we now know what the next Zelda's art style's going to be (the Link's Awakening's remake's art style. Did not see that one coming for a new title) I'd quite like a return to Windwaker's hugely expressive style ( _ideally_ as a Windwaker prequel where we play as Tetra, but that feels... Unlikely...), or something in a cell shaded version of that gorgeous cinematic coloured sketch style at the start of the Link's Awakening remake. But what I'd want most is something I'm not even imagining for Zelda yet. Love being surprised by Zelda's art styles.
I would like to see a realistic art style with an open world but balanced with more traditional dungeons and temples. I miss finding keys to open doors and chests and sneaking past guards and fighting bosses at the end of dungeons. I can imagine discovering Kakariko Village with all its beauty but seeing it with modern realistic graphics would be absolutely amazing.
You and I are from the same gaming generation, I was 6 when the NES came out and the first game I got with my NES was the first Zelda. I remember coming home from Christmas, hooking up that Y-cable to my CRT, popping in that gold Zelda cart, powering it up, and I was blown away. Glad to watch videos from gamer UA-camrs that I have a shared gaming history with. It adds so much more street cred to your videos and analysis. Keep up the great work!
Ordinarily I'd prefer something more stylized but we've had that for 3 games in a row now. For the next one I'd love to see something like OoT/TP again. Graphics have come so far since 2006 they could do incredible things with it on Switch 2.
An entire game in the Wii U tech demo art style would be an absolute DREAM. I am in the same boat as you (pun intended) where I absolutely loved the art style in Windwaker after a little bit of a warm up period to it and I still love it today. A close second on my Zelda art style bucket list behind the Wii U tech demo/modern TP art style would be a prequel to WW where you actually get to explore the entirety of Hyrule that you saw brief glimpses of under the sea in WW. One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to go out of the castle in WW under the sea and just pan the camera around and try to pick out details of Hyrule that was lost to the great flood. To explore that would be absolutely incredible with modern, souped up cel shaded visuals

Hell no! I never want them to return to that stupid atrocity art style and toon link ever again. They milked that crap for wayyyy to long and wind waker is a 7 game. Enough is enough with toon link
Love the theme of the video, and I agree! Really looking forward to all the art styles they're going to come up with for future Zelda games. Sorry for such a long comment, but I just love visual art. I like your video and I totally get what you are saying calling TP and the Wii U demo realistic, but as an visual art-enthusiast I just wanted to say that if you look at the proportions of the characters in Zelda games, they have never ever been realistic. Link has semi realistic proportions in some of the mainline games like TP, Skyward Sword, Botw/TotK and as a grown up in OoT, but all the other characters have really exaggerated proportions as in cartoons. The environments have generally been a bit less exaggerated compared to the characters in my opinion anyway. I think it's just the games with a bit more muted colors and a bit more grit feel more realistic for many (if you don't analyze the graphics). There's also a known saying something along the lines that "all the best realistic artists stylize a lot".😁 The thing about Ocarina of Time and MM was that the games were so low poly with blurry N64 textures that they left a lot for the imagination to interpret. One of the strengths of art that takes away information - exactly like cartoons and pixel art - is that the viewer adds in the missing stuff. That's why you see a lot of people that thought those were kind of realistic games, and some that they were cartoony. But when you look at the promo art, character proportions and 3D remakes you realize they were always meant to be quite cartoony (not the environments and colors as much though). Even though I usually prefer more cartoon art styles my self, I do like the Wii U "more detailed TP styled" demo too, but I would say that it's still highly stylized. Games with a truly realistic art style looks boring, uninspired and immediately end up in the uncanny valley for cartoon fans and vice versa. Cartoony games break the immersion for some fans of realistic styled games. I think this is the reason why all main line games after WW have been a compromise in the art style, which is a bit sad and boring actually. If you'd ask me all upcoming Zelda games would need to have a "toggle toon link" graphics check box! 😅 Unfortunately there's been a divide ever since cartoons were invented. I remember reading in some of Andrew Loomi's art books (from the 40s and 50s) a chapter about "are cartoons or realism better?". I think a person that can enjoy both styles have a "well balanced brain" so to speak! 😅
Wind Waker 2 with a time mechanic to go back and forth between Hyrule pre and post flood . Sprinkle in more pirate ships, under water temples, sky temples, more islands, bigger islands, bigger sailing boat, masks, playable gorons/zora/rito/deku
I was in my early 20s as well when the tech demo came out, and I remember how excited all of us were. I would love for them to make a Zelda game like the tech demo, I feel like we have 20 years of blue balls from Nintendo since that tech demo.
I don't really get that. It's like wishing for a game in the style of the Spaceworld 2000 tech demo. Nintendo can do better by now. Far better. I'd like a game that looks like Elden Ring.
I always find it funny how many people commonly refer to Twilight Princess' artsyle as realistic. It's just the browny textures and soft lighting. We have short-stacked men with massive foreheads, lips that go from ear to ear, eyes that cover a length larger than one's own noses, eyes that never open but you can still see a catterpillar-sized outline of where it should be, the Twili people as a whole, not to mention the crazy vegetation and very artsy buildings that goes all over the place in terms of physics just for the 'rule of cool'. The art design in TP is pretty out there, not Wind Waker levels of stylization, but much more than pretty much any other 3D Zelda. If TP was cel-shaded and featured stronger contrast with sharper shadows but kept the exact same models and designs, BoTW would look realistic in comparison. And I say that wholeheartedly as someone who loves how that game looks. All that to say, I agree, if we could have a single realistic Zelda title with modern technology in mind I think I would also be happy, even if I also prefer more quirky aesthetics. I think the franchise managed to establish an expectation that no 2 games will share the same vision when it comes to the art direction (with exception of rare direct sequels), and that it can work with a lot of different interpretations while still maintaining its essence. I wanna see at least once a Zelda game going balls to the wall with a more cinematic approach to its presentation, with Classical RPG/Tolkien-esque grandiosity in its world design, maybe a little bit more mature take on the kinda messed up stuff that already happens in these games. And not with the zoomed-in camera and slow movement that western AAA story-focused game developers like to implement, but with the agile and athletic but still heavy enough to feel grounded combat and movement seen in every title. I think I just want a new Zelda tbh...
We need a return to toon link. Wind Waker 2 with transparent water + sky islands ❤ the art style, design, characters, story were so perfect. This is peak Link for me
Look, you can copypaste that "oooh i dont want realistic-looking Zelda" narrative all you want but that won't take away my sheer enjoyment of Twilight Princess when it released back in the day. That game MOVED me. Such an epic! Godly storytelling extremely fitting to the medieval fantasy theme... politics, intrigue, intensity, love, action, suspense, lore--it had it all! What youtuber proposes is actually of benefit. We need to at least *SEE* what that would look like.
I’m personally hoping for a more mature art style the next game. We’ve had SS which was on the lighter side and BOTW and TOK which are more into the anime cell shaded look. It’s cool and all but it’s been like 15 years. I’m hoping a return to the Ocrina or / twilight princess style for a game or two
@@Aewon84 there’s no current Zelda game that looks as good as that demo, besides if they were to use its more realistic graphics style,it would look even better!

Wii U demo just a spruced of version of Twilight Princess which is very similar to Ocarina of Time’s art-style. I think Nintendo will go for something different again, they like to surprise
Wind Waker is also my favourite Zelda game and one of my top games ever, and it really bothers me that I have yet to be able to play WW HD. I hate that it's not on Switch. Such bs.
It’s such a great great game. Do you still have a Wii U? I highly recommend that version! The Gamepad adds so much to immersion and fun factor. I still go back to it from time to time.
I think both Breath of The Wild/Tears of The Kingdom are like the culmination and bring it the best of the impressionist, painting-like art style of Skyward Sword, so I think the next main game should get a completely new art style and direction. Wind Waker is still in its own league with their perfect stylish cel-shading, and not only it's my favorite game of all time (my first Zelda game as well). If they keep using and improving BOTW-TOTK art style, I hope more of WW blueprint is incorporated.
BOTW and SS are very different artsyles. They're both painterly, but one's water colour and one's anime. They could still do other painting styles and make it look completely different.
I just want the quality of story like wind waker, and the realism of something like a modern gritty heartbreaking epic. It’s funny hard it is to combine those two things in (I fucking hate how this is spelled) medieval fantasy.
I agree, I've always wanted to see the fully realized WiiU tech demo Zelda. I think it would be perfect to jump back into older style Zelda after BotW/TotK have passed.

I don't see them going for realism in a generation where it's still likely not going to look as good as PS5/Series. I dunno, but then again the Wii U demo is somewhat stylised. There's actually a huge range of painting styles they could still used.
I love all the art styles I literally don’t understand when people judge a game by its art style Wind waker is one of the best Zelda’s ever made And I’ll die on that hill
Any thoughts on the future of the Xenoblade Chronicles series after 3? I noticed that you mentioned enjoying the franchise, but never made a video on it.
3:20 Factually wrong, this has been debunked multiple times before. Nintendo always had the timeline in mind. Zelda 2 was a direct sequel to zelda 1 with the same link. ALttP was always intended as a prequel to Zelda 1, it is literally in the name. OoT was always a prequel to Alttp explaining ganondorfs origins, WW is clearly a sequel to OoT if you watch the backstory cutscene, and I could go on and on. There are multiple interviews way before the official timeline released that nintendo referenced the timeline. Banditgames made a great video debunking this argument. Also with the exception of FSA, all ganon/ganondorf before botw was literally the same individual, unlike Zelda and Link who are reincarnations.
The tech demo for the WiiU is good but I would hate a Zelda that looks like real people. I just hate how bland realism is. Everything these days with "realism" looks so similar to each other. I don't want reality, I want style.
The Last of Us is a terrible example. Too grounded. The example I'd use is Elden Ring. The art style for that game gives off a very high fantasy vibe, very fitting for Zelda. While I prefer the cartoony styles I also want the next game to take a more realistic approach. We've had three cartoony games in a row. I don't get this hype about the Zelda Wii U tech demo. It's like in the early 2000s when everyone wanted a game based on the Spaceworld 2000 tech demo. Then we got Twilight Princess, and it was far superior. Bottom line is, the tech demo came out in 2000. By 2006 it was outdated. The Zelda Wii U tech demo came out in 2011. It's 2023 now. Almost 2024.
I agree, something ultra cartoony would be so much fun! I'm afraid western audiences would still shit their pants over it. I was a bit surprised at how much crying there was about the Link's Awakening remake art style too, I though the art style was absolutely gorgeous.
12:08 of all artstyle of the franchise, Twilight Princess aged the worst, i dont see Nintendo using a artstyle that could age terribly, beside realism never fit Legend of Zelda, a more cartoony/stylized artstyle fit the franchise better.

I don’t care about the art style as long as it has great music, great dungeons, and great bosses. Those are the main three things.
Me personally I’m tired of the cartoony style I would love a twilight princess style game
I want a realistic game.
Never Forget what they took from us
Graffiti style zelda
The tech demo for the WiiU is good but I would hate a Zelda that looks like real people. I just hate how bland realism is. Everything these days with "realism" looks so similar to each other. I don't want reality, I want style.
Why is TP the only Zelda game where Zelda isn’t blonde and will there ever be more Zelda games that give her different hair colors
Sure I could see that. TLoU is just a game that came to my head mid-thought.
its been three in a row with the cartoony sh1t we need a tp eldin ring game for zelda
I think it is time for Toon Link. I would love a mature BOTW type Zelda game in the style of Wind Waker
I agree, something ultra cartoony would be so much fun! I'm afraid western audiences would still shit their pants over it. I was a bit surprised at how much crying there was about the Link's Awakening remake art style too, I though the art style was absolutely gorgeous.
12:48 is not obvious, realism is not a good fit for the franchise, also can Switch sucessor handle this?
I don't understand what the big deal is with the tech demo. It's actually kind of boring, I guess? I prefer the BotW art style by far.
It's metal.
12:08 of all artstyle of the franchise, Twilight Princess aged the worst, i dont see Nintendo using a artstyle that could age terribly, beside realism never fit Legend of Zelda, a more cartoony/stylized artstyle fit the franchise better.
L-take. TP was the *only* Zelda that made me cry (it was such a beautiful experience)
Capcom ZR 2024
God I really hope they go back to realistic for the next one. At least do a Ocrina remake.
