I was going through a hard time with my divorce and the death of my father a couple years ago. My big brother said “come let’s go out and cheer you up. I’ve got a spare ticket for a concert tonight come with me. Divine comedy at the london palladium” I went and had the most amazing time. Tomorrow, I bury my brother. He was more like my father. I love you brother.
Sorry for your loss, Joe. Your brother obviously had good taste and I'm glad you were lifted by going to see The Divine Comedy live. I'm lucky enough to play guitar in the band. I was looking at this clip to remind me of a great time we had on this tour. Love and light to you and your family.xx
I keep playing this song over and over and it always fills me with hope and brings me joy even in the darkest of times. I hope that you have moved on successfully with your life since leaving this poignant comment. Every good wish and much love to you Joe. Just keep on keeping on.💗🙏❤
@@stereolad7031 What a joy it must be to play with such a great band and you are a good man to leave such a lovely comment. I've never been lucky enough to see you live - but hopefully will one day. Will keep a look out for when and where you are touring.
This song was written about Neil Hannon's partner, Cathy Davey who is part of the team running the My Lovely Horse Rescue charity which looks after abandoned horses in Ireland.
His partner runs My Lovely Horse rescue here in Ireland. Named after his song from Father Ted. I think this song might be about her considering the lyrics
This is one of the best songs I have ever had the privilege to listen to. Beautiful, poignant and tremendous. Paddy Mcaloon couldn't have done it better. I think that's a compliment.
Bought this cd and vinyl in France when it was out,my beloved partner David passed away few months later, this songs bring me tears, dear Neil, thanks for your wonderful music,Sleep tight David❤
I am Korean(South Korea for sure..) and I luckily had a chance to go to his concert in London on his 42nd birthday! The most memorable day in my life and I always think of the day whenever I have hard times :) I will always support this talented guy and will enjoy his songs!
I was stopped in my tracks upon hearing this for the first time on BBC 6Music. This is a really sublime piece of music that I feel all the richer for upon knowing of it's existence.
I never used to like this band - I always thought Neil Hannon was a bit pompous... but then I saw them playing Rescue on Jools Holland. Honestly, I had to watch it at least 5 times in a row and I've never deleted it from my TV box, nor ever will. Now I'm discovering beautiful music and lyrics from the Devine Comedy that I've missed all these years. Such wonderful love songs. Certainly want to see them live.
He used to be my parents neibour ( he moved out by the time I rember ) his mother is still my neibour she is such a lovely lady , one day I heard Neil was coming to our house ( I had no clue that he was in a band ) he talked about it and after I searched it up and now I love the band .
This is the best song for about the last twenty odd years. Everything about it is total class. I must have played it easily a hundred times. Well done, man. Be proud of that.
"Got a vigilante sleeping in my bed. I looked for Marilyn, got Che instead. But I'll march behind you, wherever you may go, and I'm more proud of you than you can ever know" A very beautiful tribute to his wife.
funny - I was listening to this again just now, and then your comment popped up. As the song closed with the solo bugle, the image came to mind of Neil holding his hand in a salute.
The song is so evocative and moving, and that horn is just too much. Brings me to tears every time I hear it. One of the greats! Everyone should hear this. I defy anyone to not be moved.
I don’t usually comment but it’s one of my favourite songs, music for the soul. Also love the French Canadian band Harmonium and Georges Delerue Day for Night soundtrack.
Dear Neil: Home alone at Christmas, this one keeps me going! Your music offers so much comfort! You're a wonderful artist + person! Much love from Switzerland and Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!!! ❤😘🎄
An exceptional song which continually surprises me because of 'when' it comes from. This could grace any of Neil's 90's albums, the decade when he produced heart-wrenching true beauty and almost no garbage. The rest of Foreverland, from which this song comes, is not very memorable but is a lot better than the atrocious Office Politics. I think To The Rescue is my favourite The Divine Comedy song. I didn't think he was still capable of songs this good. Perhaps he began it in the 90's?
