Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 січ 2025
- We take a look at Ricoh's latest digital incarnation of the GR series: the GR V. With an APS-C sensor and a small body, this could be an ideal carry-around-camera. But is it any good? Watch the video to find out.

2019 and I still love mine. Amazing camera.
Eric Kim slam at 8:34 = Classic
As an owner of Ricoh GRD V (or Ricoh GR for short) for over a year I have to say that this is one of the best camera for street photography. The 28mm can be challenging for the first time but as you get used to it you will have so much fun with it. I found myself rely on snapfocus heavily when I walking around since a lot of people are camera shy in my country. The RAW editing in the camera is good enough. It will churn great pics but keep a photo editing software handy in your PC just in case you want much more detailed editing. The current software update also add more options.
Of course there are several cons to consider for some of you. First of all 2.8 means it can be quite slow at night time. The new software update fixed the slow focus at night a little bit but 2.8 means there's still limit to it. But the night shots are still good and useable, you just need to be more patient. Also 28mm can be intimidating for people who prefer 50mm so put that in your consideration before purchasing.
In summary, it's worth the price. Sure I grab it for $700 (used) but for me it's the camera serve me quite well and gave me a lot of great pics I can be proud of. Also several weeks ago they announced Ricoh GRD VI. I'm not sure if I need to move on to that or not because the upgrade seems to be not that significant. I was hoping for a full frame GRD in the future. But I'm not going to put my hope high.
Great review, Kai hardly stopped talking about the camera which is why we watch these reviews. I was starting to notice there was more faffing about in previous videos.... glad to see it was all about the camera this time :)
FINALLY a VERY STRONG review. This is how EVERY DRTV review should be. Talk about specs and image quality. This review is PERFECT Kai. This video is extremely educational. This video proves that you can produce a successful DRTV without trying to be a comedian, or involve other people in the video. Lok and Alamy shouldn't be featured in DRTV videos, because they aren't the host. They are distracting. Please use this video as a blueprint for feature DRTV videos; simple, educational, and serious.
7:24 best DigitalRev's photo ever !
yes
That opening shot was fantastic! Even in 2021.
Just ordered it so will be getting it tomorrow. I couldn't resist.
Sjoerd Venema Hey, how did you like it?
***** Stunning image quality. Great ergonomics. I don't miss the optical viewfinder. I would like an articulated screen.
Sjoerd Venema hows autofocus, esp in indoors?
robert My Fuji X-T1 is faster. It is not the fastest AF around but works pretty good for most photography. Even indoors it will do. You won't be disappointed by this camera. Image quality is quite insane.
Sjoerd Venema thx so much!
This kind of review that i've been waiting from Kai! thumbs up!
Never heard of Ricoh before now but am seriously looking at getting this one!
That is due to the limitation of the leaf shutter, which won't close that fast at f/2.8. However, the GR has a 3-stop Neutral density filter built-in, so using that, you can shoot at f/2.8 in sunlight at 1/2000 or even 1/1000 (given you're using the lowest ISO).
Some nice sample shots in this review and taken so quickly/ stealthily/ casually!
11:47 Autographed camera by Daido Moriyama
Proper DigitalRev is back!! Welcome guys))
Terrific review. It appears that the camera's lens speed isn't fast enough in some of the black and white street shots. But others are really good.
If this gets released as a interchangable lens camera i will buy it for sure.
Same as the X100. No one seems to complain about that. I have an X100 myself and I just use the built in ND filter. The reason the camera is so quiet is that leaf shutter, which isn't as fast as focal plane shutters of SLR's ect. So they traded off one stop of light, for a significantly more quiet and stealthy camera. :D
Snap focus also works if you push the shutter button completely and not half-press it.
I've been patently waiting for weeks here in Toronto for the Ricoh GR to arrive.
i feel like this video looks way better than others... is there a different lens camera combo?
Thanks for the review!
I have the GRD4 and I'm debating with myself whether I should upgrade. But then I look at Flickr pictures of the 5 and the only image quality difference between it and the 4 seems to be low-light performance.
Nice review. I just wish it included a quick comparison with the Fuji X100S camera.
Hahahaha... I love his Eric Kim impressions.
Can't wait to get my hands on one
I love my GRDIV, most enjoyable camera to use I've ever had.
Love the older videos! And Alamby is there toooooo yeeeeaah
Typed Ricoh Gr V on amazon and google. Came right up so no worries.
I am a GR fans. They are all amazing
the legendary camera...
Oh look who I found! Its back to the future...
if your using Photoshop you can turn down Saturation all the way in the RAW dialogue to get a black and white picture.
Yeah what other people say, leaf shutters have this issue, so be aware when using the camera (all cameras have their pitfalls). I believe the Fuji X100 exhibited issues like that with it's leaf shutter too, I can't be bothered to google it though.
Will be my next camera
for Street photography, you're probably using SnapFocus? What are you using for general shooting. maybe portrait or scenic like in Yosemite or open meadows?
nice jeans Kai, where can I pick up a pair?
Cant you just tell that Kai is smitten with the camera from the start? For a pocket snappy camera i guess this isn't too bad, but i wont be parting with my lieca anytime soon, Ricoh have some serious catching up to do, although it looks like their getting there now, still a way to go however.
Have missed seeing sunny hong kng too, not sure why but i always enjoy those filmed on these streets the best, such an amazing place!
Best video in bloody ages =)
I had a Ricoh GX100. it was very similar to the GR series. the lens were very sharp and crisp. although it had very small sensor, it produced pretty decent picture. the AF was fast too.
How did you get the black and white effect from the raw files? Inbuilt camera raw converter? Thanks!!
the Kidult tag in the background made my day
What did you use to shoot this piece? What camera did you use?
It's good to see Kai back in selvage denim.
damn kai do a review of the lumix LX7! i wish i'll was able to see a review from you before i ordered my LX7 but unfortunately there was no review from DigitalRev and i ordered it without your holy advise :)
I think he missed an integral part of the Ricoh GR series - the sublime UI that gets out of the way.
Ricoh is one of the few companies that get camera menus and ergonomics in terms of button placement. Operation becomes second nature after a while.
could you explain why? didn't you maybe think that it is a technical limitation of a leaf shutter?
Just because you can manually put the shutter to 1/4000 doens't meant it's at 1/4000. I can't remember but i believe it's capped at 1/2000. Check the LCD it's in red signifying that it can't go that fast.
Did Lok. C film this? Focus was off and you can see a finger at 10:20
does it produce sharper, more detailed and better image Qaulity than the Fuji x100s and Nikon Coolpix A.
How would you feel if I told you this channel is meant to be entertaining to photographers.
Entertaining.
the drtv crew almost always shoots their videos with a Canon Mark III (and before that, a MarkII) and a good L lens (usually the 24-70 f/2.8 or the 24-105 f/4). Maybe the manual focus was just hard to nail this time, but to be honest, most of this video was in pretty good focus
Great review but man why you always looks so painful...?
must be that the sun is bright in his face
#buttplug??🤔🤭
@@lifeviewcontentcreator2067 hahahaha brilliant
I'd like to see a proper comparison between this and the X100S - I mean the specs are pretty similar bar nuances which are ultimately trumped by 35mm/28mm preference and viewfinder I suppose, but how do they work in the real world? I mean the X100S has a bit of a misfocus problem for example, but excels in many other ways. And with the 28mm converter how does the X100S compare? There just isn't a clear leader here.
But you don't need more than 1/2000 to freeze action and it has a built-in ND filter to reduce the light level if wide-open on a bright day, so all's good...
Art is the guarantee of sanity
When do you review the new Leica M 240?
Too bad there are less and less videos...on DigitalRev TV. I went to HK few days ago because with your videos I really wanted to see HK^^ I even thought of going to Digitalrev Office...lol. Maybe that should be a tourist point for HK !
Thank you for the reply :)
Is it strong enough to keep it with those settings?(16F, 1/200 and 400ISO) on bright days?
Thx again for the reply :)
Wholly cow, no swearing, no nonsense it's amazing! Keep this format over the other please, swearing 24/7 gets old and isn't really good for comedy anyways.
What about Sunpak PF20XD? I've been using one with my GRD3 and it's been working fantastic. FYI, I mostly use it on-camera.
Solid review though, enjoyed it. Well jealous of that signed GR1.
And the GR even has a 3-stop ND filter built-in. How do people miss that?
In Hong Kong, all of the retailer store are out of stock TT
it does, check out the GV-1 and GV-2. I own the GV-1 and its quite honestly the brightest OVF I've ever used
what is the best canon semi-pro camera ? G15 ?
Didn't really have time to fact-check, I just assumed it was the same shutter mechanism as in the x100 given how similar the lens etc is. And apparently it seems the x100 only offers 1/1000 at f/2 (unless that has been updated via firmware?). And I did say that the fujis had ND-filters. I was just trying to get to the point that the Ricoh isn't the only camera that does this and that the Ricoh guys aren't stupid.
Kai is actually genuine in this video.
Not his previous waves of sarcastic nonsense.
While the two are indeed both fantastic cameras, my personal recommendation goes to the A77. Fantastic camera.
Though you should probably go your local camera store just to see which one you like most
looks like the perfect street shooting camera...would have liked to see how well the ND filter worked w/ higher shutter speeds
digitalrev interested in reviewing or comparing Fujifilm XF series Lenses? and newly released Zeiss touit....
You do get a distance/dof scale in mf mode for scale focusing
Please review one of the Sigma compacts.
Wait I'm not sure I understand it anymore. It seems to me the way the specs are discussed in this video, that a camera like this is just as good as a DSLR. Can someone explain to me what I'm overlooking here?
I love this show, it's like top gear for photography only significantly less annoying
The 'full open max shutter speed' issue: It is quite obvious that you can't use the highest shutter speeds @ full open, because the shutter also functions as a diaphragm at opening and shutting.
I wonder how kai would review the sigma DP1/2. Its like a mini field camera.
hi what do u think about magic lantern soft ware
So many Reviews, and you still not buy a steadycam? :D
"Half press and your camera squeezes one out like it’s had plenty of digital roughage." 1:40
Vividly gross, but in a good way.
Probably, it's an issue of leaf shutter, also x100 has the same problem.
For someone, noise-free shutter is important, and built-in ND filter helps to use f2/8 in bright sunlight.
This is a street camera, for heritage and specs, so leaf shutter is the right choice despite the slow speed.
Finally the old Kai is back.
i wonder if a firmware update could remedy the situation
has Kai change his glasses lenses?
It's reflecting light
Please can you do a review on the Samsung Galaxy Zoom?
Ricoh engineers are NOT stupid.GR has built in a 2-stop ND filter to compromise the shutter speed limit.
Looking for Nikon S1 review. thanks!
YES. But I would change the words to It's small therefore it fits" Sorry couldn't help it. YOU brought it up!
I'm still very much impressed, on how Ricoh maintains, this COMPACT design - with the heftier sensor / lens / hardware. It isn't meant to be a performance beast, otherwise, the P7000 is the Hulk (but we know, the truth there). I still cannot understand, this opposite aperture/ max.shutter relationship (same story on legacy GRDs)...Don't feel so bad Lok, I too have an "old" GR-D (GR-DII)
Ohh - And I'm still snickering, over the "Street Tog" referral.
Holy crap 8:35 is genius, Eric Kim
technically its a a true 18.3mm. it is the size of the sensor that makes the 18.3mm give you a field of view that is 28mm equivalent.
They are not stupid, it's just the way leaf shutters work. The Fuji x100 and x100s works exactly the same way with f/5,6 being the largest aperture that you'll get the fastest shutter speed in. The Nikon Coolpix A I think only has 1/2000 as the fastest shutter speed regardless of aperture (and no built in ND-filter). Both the Ricoh and the Fuji have built in ND-filters to compensate for only having 1/2000 as the fastest shutter speed wide open.
Funny part. It's basically a Pentax. (Even has that lovely SMC coating on the lens from what I've gathered)
Versatility, mainly. With a DSLR, you can get an ultra wide angle lens, or a 1:1 macro, or a 500mm tele, or an f1.2 fast fifty. With this, you get the 18.3mm f2.8 and that's it, but put a similar lens on an APS-C DSLR and you'll get much the same result. Except you'll never fit that in your pocket.
Good review.
miss Hong Kong,, when it's still not destroyed by china.
Did Lok change his lense
Can you guys make a review of the pentax mx 1 ?
Kai... can i get some of what you smoked before this show... Please
The GR. It is fast fast fast compared to the original X100 (personal experience from someone who owns--and loves--both).
You think that's bad (which it really isn't if the viewfinder is decent), Sony's viewfinders for the NEX and RX1 range from $300 - $600
If you only look at the picture quality, the Ricoh should be as good (if not better because it has no AA-filter) as most DSLRs with APS-sized sensors.
what is the benefit of AA filter?
60d 7d 700d 600d and 550d if you want to go for the basic kinda ok set
