This really is a movie that you're supposed to watch with subtitles, unfortunately. It's one of my favourite films, and it's one of the only things I don't like about it; they really should've been burned into the english release 🤷

I was very happy to see this reaction. There is so much "group think" in choosing movies on reaction channels that there are hundreds of fantastic films that never can win a poll, but are superior in quality to many that everybody reacts to. Here is another great film that is under the radar "Sling Blade"(1996) starring Billy Bob Thornton.
If you’ve never seen *Pan’s Labyrinth* it is essential viewing after this. Same writer and director; also absolutely beautiful. I actually like it even more. It also is considered a masterpiece.

Something that may intrigue you is that a huge influence on this story is a 1962 Russian fantasy film called Человек-амфибия (AMPHIBIAN MAN), which was based on a book by Alexander Beliaev. It is also a romance between a human woman and a fish-man. It was not released in American theatres, but there was an English-dubbed version that played on TV here and in Mexico, and that is likely where writer/director Guillermo Del Toro saw it. There are a few uploads of the film here on YT, some in original Russian with subtitles.
The best thing about Dasha is that her early videos she struggled so much with English now she’s prettt fluent it’s a great process
I understand that it will never happen but I honestly feel that the AMPAS should bestow a special Oscar to Doug Jones for all the incredible performances over the years. Usually without speaking a word he has brought so many characters to life. Let's see Robert De Niro (or whoever) give as beautiful a portrayal while covered head-to-toe in latex prosthetics. Doug Jones is a brilliant artist.

Movie Trivia: The Amphibian Man is portrayed by Doug Jones, whom is probably the most famous suit character actor in Hollywood. Jones has portrayed dozens of characters in movies & tv shows in full creature costumes including Abe Sapien from Hellboy, The Faun & The Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth, The Silver Surfer in Fantastic 4, The Carrot FBI Agent in Rocky & Bullwinkle, & The Ice Cream Man in Legion just to name a few of his roles.
He is now playing Captain Saru on Star Trek Discovery. His character is a hoot and has a fantastic character arc.
You need to see the old 1954 movie on which this is based: "The Creature from the Black Lagoon."

I once saw someone reviewing this movie said that Elisa was an Amphibian Woman all along & at the end of the movie the Amphibian Man is turning her into a full sea creature. The person explained how the Amphibian people are born like normal humans & live on the surface until they come of age then they turn into Amphibians & have to return to the waters. However, Elisa was found on the surface & had her gills sealed, then she was raised alone by humans but unable to speak. Once she met the Amphibian Man, her instincts took over hence why she found him attractive & he realized that she was the same as him. Once they are both in the water at the end, his injuries are healed & she is becoming an Amphibian Woman hence why her gills open up since she is finally where she belongs.
I like that idea better than Elisa just having a kink for scales and gills.

Ahh it's my old old friend from the 1960's... The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
The director Guillermo Del Toro describes this movie as the inversion of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. In that classic movie the hero kills the monster and gets the girl. In this movie the monster kills the supposed hero and gets the girl. Also Del Toro didn't use the word "gets" in describing Elisa and the Asset's relationship. 🤣😂

@@kellymoses8566 Some people *can* do it, but it takes exponentially more brainpower than just speaking one or the other at a time and can be quite exhausting (from speaking to my Polish partner who frequently has to translate between myself and her wider family)

Hello Dasha, great to see you!😊 Glad to see your subscriber numbers are picking up again! Michael Shannon (Strickland) is the real bad guy here. At first it looks like the Russian scientist spy might end up being the bad guy, but nope, he is a good guy too. The things he made on her body so she could breath under water are "Gills" in English. The creature resembles the "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954). It was a series of films in the 50s about a monster, from Universal Pictures. Great reactions to this well made Guillermo del Toro film, Dasha!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

This aquatic man appears in both hellboy movies as well, although the director of all 3 movies claims its not the same character (but it might be).

The Creature in the Movie is actually the Origin Story of "Abe Sapien" From the Movie Hellboy... played by Doug Jones
He’s not Abe Sapien. Abe would speak English and not be from South America. Same actor, same director, completely different character. This Gill-Man has far more in common with The Creature From the Black Lagoon.
@@TheAbominableDrFaustus If you listen to what they say about Abe's back story in Hellboy, they explain the Similarities also, Abe's Love of the 40s Records, everything lines up, maybe not Perfectly but it is close
