Drogheda & East Meath needs about 3000-10000 more houses, 500 More Apartments And 50-100 More Shops with a population of 80,000 to become a city in my opinion.

You are right. There are currently around 8000 housing units just completed/being built/about to be started, mainly across the northside of the city. This will show in a huge jump in population in the next census, with the addition of East Meath. We totally agree about shops, and would add need more sports, arts and higher education facilities too. With a current population of 59000, your number of 80,000 is looking closer than ever.

Hello, thank you for sharing Drogheda and East Meath. A part of Ireland I do not know.

If and only if Drogheda becomes a city we will need a new hospital.

I am moving to Drogheda soon. I think there are a lot of things to do with the city. From what I see, most people consider it a sleep-over city. People sleep there and wake up to go to Dublin or other places to work. There is so much potential. I hope it will change in coming years.

The countryside is disappearing and it is just sad and disgraceful

I left when there was nothing ~ communications bubble burst, the now site to sountside of Lidl was once Tellabs. For an already strained doctors service & hospital ... A lot needs to change. Rapidly!!

True. They are just adding new stuff while doing nothing to improve the older stuff

Great point! We totally agree. This is exactly why we need our own administration, to make our own decisions for this emerging city. Drogheda/East Meath has the same population as Waterford city. It's unthinkable to have no administration here.

There should be some sort of formal threshold to be designated a city, like 50k population, 3rd level institution, public transport ect. And then a presidential charter should be granted.

In the sixties and seventies Drogheda was one of the nicest towns in Ireland. West St. Peter St, Laurence St, Shop St, were buzzing with trade. and the half day on Wednesday was a treat. Other streets that had their own speciality business's were Dwyer St, John St and James St. The railings and gates in front of St. Peters is a great loss to the town. Sadly the planners that have been involved in the town since the late seventies haven't got a clue as to how good planning should work and have been in the pockets of big developers that are only in it for the profit and have no interest in the history or heritage of the town. They have totally destroyed the heart of this beautiful town and the Government with their open border policies have driven the final nail in it's heart. Sadly Drogheda has now become a dump and does not have any resemblance of it's former glory.

I mean, geographically Drogheda is an urban settlement over 25000 people so it's geographically a city

I don't see Drogheda becoming a city. So many of those new apartment dwellers that you highlight will be using the train to get to work in Dublin not Drogheda, sadly.
The amount of current dereliction and lack of general care for the look of Drogheda does not hold out much hope that the local authority would have the capacity or vision to manage a city.
The lack of hotel accommodation and limited arts and cultural infrastructure also highlight the current limit to the vision of Drogheda.

This town is beyond belief. Its Main Street is so miserable that all it is missing are rows of tents. A possibly beautiful riverscape has been irreparably destroyed by terrible planning. Sadly not a nice place at all.

It really does. We have had expert after expert tell us that there is nowhere like it in Ireland for public transport links, infrastructure, housing availability, local beauty, heritage and more.

Don't forget the population of the North coast of Drogheda including Baltray, Termonfeckin and Clogherhead, who use and require Droghedas facilities, infrastructure, and amenities daily too. In the next decade or so, these 3 villages and Drogheda will merge like what's happening in East Meath.

    • @DroghedaCityStatusNow
      @DroghedaCityStatusNow  Рік тому

While those areas are not as physically close to merging with Drogheda as East Meath, we definitely haven't forgotten them. The population of this greater area, including East Meath is close to 90,000. Huge potential.

This is great except for the presumption of plenty of cheap oil being available forever.
More action should be done to address the future energy needs of an expanding city rather than bulldozing ahead with the idea only of warehousing people.
If not, this will be another crime-ridden, vacuous wasteland of impoverished hopelessness.

We totally agree. This is exactly why we need our own administration, to give us a chance to build a more sustainable, safer future. Navan and Dundalk simply cannot make effective decisions on infrastructure and sustainable growth for this emerging city.
