Good video. It's nice to hear you and not music over the whole thing. Came out nice. I am doing my 1989 formula 350 ttop liner this winter. Thanks for the tips.
My pleasure! The Fiero headliner should be pretty similar. I've been eyeing those up! I've always wanted a Fiero GT. I might not fit, but I'd like to own one for at least a bit haha.
Thank you- the video was not boring 😋 I am restoring a 98 ws6 T and this was extremely informative. I would like to see how you attack the other pieces as well.
Glad you liked the video Nicole! I hope your project is going well... I have a couple other videos up for the other pieces. I wasnt thrilled with the sail panels, but they're good enough. Luckily my sun visors dont need any work because those are beyond me haha.
Tanks for this lesson! I habe to repair my Headliner this days. This is the only lesson i could find on internet. Well done ! Greetings from Austria/ Vienna
Glad you liked the video! If you take anything away from it... 1) DONT do it outside when its windy haha. 2) leave yourself PLENTY of material on those inside corners. You can always trim it back and stretch it. Thanks for watching and commenting! Good luck with your headliner!
I know you say you are not a professional, but this was still the best video I found on really good tips on how to do this. Kudos man on a great job, even with the minor imperfections I think it still looks great!! :) I got my fibreglass Headliner from Joe Penko, 2 yards of graphite coloured fabric from eBay, I'll be applying that to mine following a lot of your very fine example here. Thanks for doing this awesome video man :)
Im glad it helped! And I hope me showing my minor imperfections helps you avoid them yourself! Its really not that hard. You just have to take your time, and remember...you can always trim a little more fabric off haha. Thanks for the comment and the kudos...I appreciate it!
***** Awesome, yeah I figure my plan will be to lay my headliner over the back of the fabric and trace a good two or so inches around the shape of the headliner, and apply it in pretty much the same way you did, start in the middle and work towards the outside. I'll do it inside that way no wind... plus Fall is here so it's a might chilly outside for this kind of work anyways, lol I guess I'll be using the kitchen floor ;)
Doing it inside would be MUCH better. Just cover everything in the kitchen because spray glue can be nasty to remove haha. Side note...just saw your screen name and checked out your build. Thats awesome!!! Knightrider, and my dad owning an 82 Firebird, is what made me love these cars. I always wanted K.I.T.T. when I was a kid! Going to go check out some of your videos now.
***** Thanks Man, good tips :) I have a nice big drop cloth, my sweetie will appreciate that lol ;) Thanks for the compliments on my build, I REALLY appreciate that, especially from someone with way more experience at this stuff than I. This is the first time I have ever done anything like this, but I'm having a blast learning all the new skills and things I need to to do this project. I have a blog too you might like:) myknightrider2000.blogspot.ca I hope you do decide to make a K.I.T.T. replica, I would love to follow your progress, and share ideas even. :)
JEG's Garage what's funny, is back in 1987 , I was 19 and had just bought a new IROC Z28 , automatic, 305tpi loaded with T's. I remembered how new it smelled, after a dozen speeding tickets I had to give her up, the insurance was going up and I was on my mom's insurance. So, now I'm doing a total resto on one , but the nice thing is it's a 5 speed, T's and I prefer the 3rd gen body style they are so different from the rest of the Camaros and TA's of today. I'm going for pro touring style with my build and as much modern as I can go. My son seems to like the car even though it looks like a wreck , but he may get involved at some point cause it's gonna be his.
If there are wrinkles in the project, use a steamer to take those out. That is how it is done in the shops:) Also only glue a small section at a time with the spray glue, this will make a better bond, and will keep things tighter. Glue will dry way to fast when working outside, so you will get 'dry spots' that will later show up. When folding over the tight corner areas, use a bit of heat, that helps to form the pad to go under easier!:) The stretching will mean less cutting of the material.
I would like to see you do the sail panels mine are in desperate need also could you tell us what kind of mounts you used on your ls and did you notch your k member
Ok! Ill make sure I do a "quick" vid on the sail panels. I just finished my T-top shades and will be posting that video soon. I used Spohn mounts and I noticed my k-member for both the A/C compressor, and for the oil pan. I have tons of clearance all around and my k-member is still good to go strength wise.
I had the same problem on a 97 FB when I recovered them ttop headliners are tricky. I too didn't have proper coverage in the corners. My fix was to run some wire loom over the edge to cover up boo boo. Not only did it look good when tops were out but also protected edgenfrom sun and wind damage. Any way nice job.
Thanks! The corners were a bear. I wish I could do it over...I figured out the trick after I was finished haha. I was able to make it look 100x better by cutting small little patches, and gluing them in. I shaved some of the foam off, so they would lay flat. Worked well. Then I trimmed the entire inside "rim" of the t-top opening with black felt. Partly to strengthen it, and partly to hide some of my sins. I have to finish my second sail panel, then Ill be doing a "results" video.
Basically by laying it over the headliner panel and trimming it. However...even doing that I still made the corners too tight. Keep in mind you can stretch that material slightly. Leave it as big as you can, and pull those inner corners around vs pie cutting them. Its VERY easy to pie cut too far and wind up with gaps like I did.
Great video! I'm going to be doing my 97 soon. Do you know if hobby lobby has this material? I don't think JoAnn fabrics is around us any longer, I'm in the northeast part of the country
Hi Vend Master. Im not sure if hobby lobby has it or not. BUT...Im sure you can order it on Amazon or something. Its specially called foam backed headliner material or something like that.
Material is standard "headliner" material. I got it at JoAnne's fabrics. Ide say its the same thickness as original, but I cant be sure since the original material was deteriorated so badly. It works well!
Eh... Easier in that you wont have to deal with a fiberglass headliner that is likely falling apart...yes. However, I have seen some of those ABS pieces with some TERRIBLE fitment. Huge gaps, warped, etc. I have also seen some that fit really nice.
Awesome! Take your time, and do some test runs on those corners and it'll turn out great! My advice on the corners is to leave too much. You can always trim a little more off if you have to. Adding it is much more difficult haha.
Did you ever do the T top shades? I still have my originals but they sag horribly. Thanks for making the headliner video! I plan on doing it myself soon as the one I pulled out of a Camaro is the wrong color but much better than the junk one from my Trans am.
+Justin Leonard Hi Justin. Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad the video helped or at least gave you some more confidence to do it yourself!! Just watch those inner corners. Leave yourself more than enough when you go to pull it around, and only trim a little out as you need to get it to wrap. Here is the t-top shade video. They turned out WAY better than I thought they would. If Im being honest, I planned to simply remove the old binding and material, and just glue the fabric on, leaving the edges unfinished. But once I got started I realized I could actually re-bind them. SO glad I did that. They still look awesome. ua-cam.com/video/woC7aXfFCu8/v-deo.html
***** sweet! I got to looking at the headliner I pulled out and it's not the foam board.. Some kind of plastic maybe abs I think. Do you think it's worth recovering or selling and getting the color I need. I have the same color interior you do but the new headliner I have is black.
Hahaha...I recommend at least a 6 pack for just the cleaning job, then another few for the actual recovering. Don't want to get too tipsy or else lining it up might be an issue :)

I'm going to do this to my 98 formula, this showed me I can do this instead of buying a new one, thx
Glad I could help!
Thank you for the videos. I'm looking at as much info for ttop headliners before tackling my 88 Fiero GT.

great job, at least you have the headliner panel as mine is missing.
My previous Trans AM was missing it. I called it the "headliner delete package". Nice thing is, I never had to worry about it haha.

Glad the video was useful Christian!
Thanks. for you videos time to work on my 1986 z28
+Angel Carreon Thanks for watching!!
Did that headliner fabric come pre-cut or did you have to measure and cut it yourself?
Measured and cut myself. Just have to leave it big while gluing and then trim carefully while installing.
How did you measure the material so it fits?
Basically by laying it over the headliner panel and trimming it. However...even doing that I still made the corners too tight. Keep in mind you can stretch that material slightly.
