- Firstly I'm sorry for the audio. These songs were recorded direct from the television onto a reel to reel tape recorder and 46 years later the sound suffers but what a fantastic discovery. I'm unsure of the program ,possibly Top of the Pops . A youthful Small Faces from 1965 with their take on Sam Cookes "Shake" , The Miracles " You really got a hold on me" and their own " You better believe it". With the inclusion of "You better believe" I'd have put this recording as 1966 but the other artists on the reels ( Sandie ,Cilla ,Animals , Dave Clark 5 etc ) perform their 1965 hits. So here made public for possibly the first time in 46 years , the Small Faces live on the bbc.
I still Sing Itchycoo Park!!! I remember and saw both versions of this Band, but nobody Beats "THE" Small Faces" Or Humble Pie!!! RIP Steve Marriott
Just awesome!!! I've got a small faces inproted album with "you really got a hold on me" on it and Steve Marriott's voice, specially at the end of the track, omg!! James brown eat ya heart out!! It still gives me goosebumps nearly 40 years after 1st hearing the track, along with All the small faces tunes, that Voice is like a bottle of wine, it just gets better with Time!! 👍👍🛵
CLASSIC - That voice is magical!!!
Quite awesome as always with Small Faces ,,,,, one of the greatest 60s bands of all time ,,,, and there were some quite incredible sounds from then that are still relevant today ,,, true talent lives on x G
Steve's pipes just beautiful, such control, thank you
So young and small!
the founders of "Heavy Rock" and undisputedly one of Britain`s Rock-Crown-Jewels...from the Beginning with the formula how to turn "covers" in "originals"...! Lucky that I`ve experienced them in 1966 at the famous "Star-Club" here in Hamburg...they ripped the place into pieces...Unforgettable Rock-Shows...thanx lad`s,
Holy cow, but this is soulful! I expected something tamer in '65. Thanks for posting.
Incredible sound given how old the recording is and the fact it was recorded from the television !
♥ ♪♪♪♪♥ That Steve. The energy he had is amazing : ) I guess music was the spark and not acting, or anything else for that matter, that he could really express himself.
No need to apologize for the sound, it was the mid 60's and should sound like it
NEVER heard this before!! Thank you so so so much Mr. Mod Zeb! You are the mod you are the man for unearthing this! This is greatness!
There's the awe-inspiring (legit) 'Small Faces On The BBC'. but as a SFs fan I know I want more, more, more! So this is much appreciated!.For better or for worse The BBC was the repository and custodian of stuff like this. They are always finding hitherto lost reels of tape in closets and in between sofa cushions. Everyone has heard the stories of how a lot of their tapes were erased (or 'wiped') and the tape simply re-used just like all of the early 'Tonight Show' broadcasts!
Yet there's the incredible BBC 'needle time' releases from the 90's beginning with 'The Beatles On The BEEB', Led Zeppelin, Bowie, the (unofficial) Kinks broadcasts and The Yardbirds radio broadcast that BTW contains the definitive version of 'Train Kept A Rolling'.
All of these recordings are must-haves. So more, more, more!
Great memories, not heard that for a while! :)
That white blues/R & R voice is incredible!!
brill zeb allways loved the small faces take of this tune ,great to hear it live ,top
I just love them
God, thank you for sharing, OP. ♪♪♪♪♥♪♪♪♪♪
Great upload! Thanks.
Too awesome for words.
A real blast from the past
Glorious! Gx
Thank you !
Damn! What a find.
Excellent
jesus thats some shout mick...seeing the greatest band ever fronted by the greatest white soul singer of all time.....for many of us and the bands fans we just have the privilage of these and other wondeful soul soaked gut wrenching words and music that still sounds fresh!
ps my children are named Autumn & Marriott in tribute....come on the wife said noo at plonk and happydaystoytown ha
keep the faith from the banks of the mersey
this is when lil robbie plant was still crooning elvis hits in the mirror while holding his hairbrush
ultrakool : don't be silly. Steve Marriott was only one year older than Robert! It's not a competition either, we can all appreciate all the good musicians. And we should. We're so lucky to have all the good music.
Robert Plant was a huge fan of the Small Faces before forming L.Z. -- he was like a Marriott fanboy!.. lol, that's the magic of Marriott!
brilliant upload not sure if this was also released on the bbc sessions? or in some other forms
soon a box set is to be released with everything small faces including sev unheard gems....if you think your groovy, be my baby & another but not sure of title?
keep the faith
great! Thank you......
Listening ro this I understand why Steve left and formed Humble Pie. Still I Love those "pop years" 66-68, Tin Soldier is my alltime favourite, not to mention All or nothing. Bad english, sorry, I'm Swedish.
Bengt Mikkelsen
I don't. He was the front person of a fabulous group already and could do exactly as he pleased. Didn't make any sense to break away and go away, at all. Nobody I know now has ever even heard of Humble Pie, but Small Faces - everybody knows, even now, even young people. I was 15 when I first heard them and I was such a fan. BIG fan!!
The Small Faces was the first concert
Sounds like Jimmy Winston vocals on "Shake" so that would have made it 65.
That's Plonk on vocals !!!! Mac on Hammond Organ.
@@stevelaidlaw2676 Need to A & B it with the LP to see. You may be right, but I'm not sure.
Thanks for this Brilliant discovery Zeb. Class.
Steve was and always be the shizzle!
There are but 4 Small Faces;-)
Sounds like taken from Saturday Club, with dj Brian Matthews.
plonk always had the best haircut
To clear things up, half of the songs on the Small Faces' debut album (approx., at least) have Jimmy Winston, who left the group in October 1965. That means it's very possible that "You'd Better Believe It" was around even in 1965, not just 1966. I've been trying to seperate all their recordings with Jimmy Winston from those with Ian MacLagan on their s/t debut and "From the Beginning". If anyone has some info that'd be great...
Love it want more small faces lives on
Thanks so much, it's a breath of fresh air compared to hard rock
Wonderful, should have added a brass section, and gone on the all nighter circuit ! back then.
'Groovy, knockout.....'
LOL
Any chance you could put the animals, dc5 etc.. tracks up. Thanks for the small faces.
@Tazbo34- Agreed. Fantastic..
supurb top find mate
should be jimmy winston in the pic, if it's 1965.
To Happydaystoytown71 Just as well you didn't suggest "Happiness Stan" or "Mad John" to your wife as prospective names for your children then...
Also, the audio in the vid isn't that bad. Trust me, I've heard worse.
its not Top of the Pops...but its great
