The reason why Eggman works so well comically, is he is a serious threat. This is a man that would make world leaders tremble with an army of ladybug unicycles and slinky bunnies.
I think that the switch from Robotnik to Eggman is when he really started to lose his mind and become a crazy scientist, switching his obsession on not just conquering the world but also destroying Sonic. If we look at their interactions in Generations (even though there aren't that many), we can see that Robotnik seems more grounded in reality, often annoyed by Eggman's antics. He even says "Wow, am I really gonna get that crazy ?" So to me he was still sorta sane back then, and when he became Eggman, that's when he lost the little sanity he had left.
@blazing8196 Well not anymore. Frontiers confirmed that it's Sonic who gave him the moniker Eggman, and he adopted it as his own name. But in Adventure he still goes by Robotnik and switches to Eggman in Adventure 2. So even though in japanese he always was Eggman, the lore has changed.

Eggman's obsession with being loud and proud with his designs and plans throughout the years is one of my favourite aspects of his character. If and when Eggman is hatching a world-dominating scheme, he will make sure that you KNOW it is him you're being conquered by. He likes to announce his presence, he likes to plaster his face on everything he makes, he turned Sonic's insulting nickname into a title that he gave the world reason to fear and respect. Eggman's bombasticness really sets him apart from his contemporaries, I feel, I will always appreciate that about him. He doesn't want nor need to hide, because he has every confidence that anyone who walks into that cave with his face plastered onto it won't be walking back out. Good video, Mark. Yet another one for me to enjoy again and again as I get stuff done.

Looking at his design, you'd be given the impression he's goofy and not very threatening, and that's true in Sonic 1. But then you have Sonic 2, which is the Death Egg's introduction, and he's beginning to come off as a threat with a sense of serious tension. Lastly, he comes really close to successfully executing his plans in Sonic 3, thus establishing him as a genius who has the potential to rule the world, perhaps even the entire galaxy. It's simple characterisation in a simple plot, I know, it's just neat that his character has a sense of continuity and rising stakes throughout the 16-bit trio, and one that's a basic example of "looks aren't everything".
Meta era aside, game!Eggman has always reminded me of the Joker, at times silly but always incredibly dangerous. Each cartoon focusing on a specific side of the mad doctor. Honestly I think the Death Egg sums him up perfectly, a shout out to Star Wars but Eggman wants to make sure you know Dr. Ivo Robotnik is the best, so not only does he plaster his face on it, (which might also be a way to honor his beloved grandfather) he makes sure the space station outshines the original completely by having his version of it's ultimate weapon, the FInal Egg Blaster, be capable of destroying entire star systems. (as seen in Sonic Battle)
A personal favorite showcase of his narcissism for me was Sonic CD. In a lot of the Bad Futures, you see the landscape destroyed, along with all of Eggman's machinery itself, ironically enough. However, his own face and image are still kept alive and present, notably in Stardust Speedway's large Eggman-shaped dome and Wacky Workbench's hidden statue. To go to the extent of desecrating the environment at the risk of it and his own machines simply to keep his own image alive is an idea I adore and showcases the absolute extent of his ego.
One of his funniest moments is in Mania after you defeat him in Titanic Monarch zone. He doesn’t bother to escape and just throws a temper tantrum instead.

I see Dr. Eggman as both goofy and a serious threat. He can be hilarious and funny due to his mannerisms and exaggerated personality, but due to his intelligence and tenacity, he’s a menacing and arrogant villain who can be a real threat.

To things were so much simpler when they were seen as one in the same 🙄 More so when you consider that in (the Japanese script) of Adventure when he makes his appearance in the Egg Hornet, he remarks that he's been quiet for a while but he's back to cause trouble, making quite obvious that these are the same characters from the 16-bit games and no other worlds or dimensions - depending on your region - that puts them firmly as two different characters we have now.

Which kinda makes sense considering I don't think I've ever seen Sonic looking at physically putting his hands on Eggman in the games... besides maybe jumping and hitting the exposed part of his craft in boss fights, but beyond that, in actual story cutscenes, its not something I can remember see happening.
5:59 actually, no, the original game is not the source of him realizing that ruling everything with his empire is difficult. In fact, the first game isn't when they first met at all, they actually had battled each other before and eggman always looses against sonic, bit the first game is when he actually uses the animals inside the robots for the first time. This is mostly stated in the Japan manual. So yeah, eggman didn't first met sonic at all in the 1st game, this game is just another recent battle they had, that's all.
Sonic 1 for the Genesis has prequels like Sonic 1 for the Master System , Tails' Adventures and the Arcade game SegaSonic bros. which was the first time Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel appeared .

Another great analysis video and I agree about how Eggman, no matter how silly he may look is a truly dangerous villain, I mean, take a look at his IDW self where he's bumbling but still a truly dangerous villain as evidenced by how this Eggman did one of his heinous actions yet in the franchise: creating and using the Metal Virus, where he managed to cause more mental and emotional pain to Sonic and his friends then he ever tries to physically hurt them in combat. Plus it wouldn't hurt if you did analysis videos of not only other incarnations of Eggman, but also of all the characters.

@@AceCardGaming while Classic Eggman can come off as goofy, I thought AoStH Robotnik best encapsulates the subtlety of Robotnik looking goofy on the outside and threatening on the inside, whilst SatAM Robotnik comes off as superior on the outside but inferior on the inside. Yes, SatAM Robotnik took over a kingdom, but they ended the show with not just a cliffhanger, but with Robotnik being defeated amongst the aftermath. AoStH Robotnik is proud of being evil and is not afraid to tell off anyone who stands against him; even goes so far as to make a bold claim (near the end of “Must’ve Been a Beautiful Baby”) that he conquered most of the planet, just by showing off his trophy collection like a public flasher. AoStH Robotnik even went so far as to make murder attempts. For example, in "Robotnikland", Robotnik had trapped Sonic and his friends inside a giant cake, and had 10-ft sticks of dynamite as candles. Near the end of the "Quest for the Chaos Emeralds" saga, Robotnik had tied Sonic and Tails to their time traveling skateboard, and threw them so hard and so far, that they end up at the Beginning of the Universe, where they almost got killed by the Big Bang. The final episode, "Hero of the Year" (appropriately a clipshow), had Sonic stuck in a bathosphere to let him suffer from lack of oxygen, and for good measure, Robotnik sank a giant ship that the bathosphere was connected to, the same ship that has Sonic's friends on it. So yes, I saw AoStH Robotnik as a much *better* representation of in-Game Eggman in terms of personality, because even petulant childishness can be effective in a villain, only if the villain's compacity for violence greatly contrasts his immature behavior.
well it's true that with each classic game they rose the stakes in mania he gets a powerful ruby that allows him to manipulate time and space, and uses it to power his BIggest robot yet, and when one of his creation tries to get it for itself, he goes after it to get it back and in superstars: (spoilers) He is looking for a god of destruction to use it as a mere weapon, as well as making sure sonic is dead whenever he sees him, there are no in-games cutscenes involving him asside from a few in egg fortress, where he uses a time reversing machine to repair his space station and then it's final mech, and doesn't care that said station is litterally falling appart while fighting sonic, HE WANTS HIM COMPLETELY OBLITERATED and nothing will change his minds

You know, This "Dr. Eggman" Guy sure looks like that plumber from the 80s. Jokes aside, I always liked a mix with the silly and menacing to Robotnik. First off I mean look at him, He is shaped like an Egg, Builds a lot of Egg themed Robots, and his plan is to bulid "Robotnik/Eggman Land" What a silly scheme. Even how he is written in the JP manuel have lines like ""You see, Sonic?! This time it's different. I've turned all the animals on the island into robots." "They'll all do what I tell them to. In other words, the whole island is your enemy. Hahahahaha... cough cough. This time, the whole world will be mine." And im fine with a silly villain however the menacing side also works for him. The Early Sonic game had a "Nature vs Machine" Theme to them. And Robotniks goal is to make a world full with machines he does not give a crap about nature. And Sonic who represent what good in the world does not like Putting animals into Robots, So he goes to stop him because in his mind, Capturing animals to power up Robots "That no good". I feel like with Robotnik (Classic eggman) He was undeterred by his losses too much at first, but as he kept losing over and over, he kept getting more annoyed, leading to hatred, and a cycle of insanity, trying the same thing "putting animals in robots" to stop Sonic and rule the world, until he eventually lost his cool HOWEVER: In my opinion, Movie Eggman is done the best! It starts off with him being... mostly sane, but still a bit of a nutjob, who is heartless to an extent, but not evil, keeping his cold intentions to destroy sonic, Sonic 2 he's been in the mushroom planet alone, and finally made it back, surely that took a mental toll, and it kinda did, and further descending down his sanity, eggman wants nothing more than to stop sonic and get his revenge in this movie, through all means necessary, but ultimately fails to super sonic, In the "Official sonic movie 2 Pre-quill" comic, there's a monologue coming from eggman, that agent stone was recalling on, as he went through his life, describing how he's taken an appriciation to agent stone, being able to keep up, to some extent, and giving him advice to keep himself in the "eggman mindset" which details how every person fits a stereotype perfectly, allowing them to be exploited in many different ways. Comparing them to the likes of a robot, albeit, with humans having an unpredictability factor. Sonic 3... not much can be said, but after facing defeat from super sonic, and then shadow coming on the loose, eggman has to team up with sonic his nemesis, showing that while he hates him, he isn't blinded by his hatred, though when he's introduced, he's taken far less care of himself, being far more overweight, and resembling classic robotnik a bit more.

The main issue with Eggman now is that he’s become a slapstick villain now, don’t get me wrong I have a soft spot for Boom Eggman for his banter with Sonic and the others and I always liked the Eggman from the Genesis games and Sonic Mania but I think the last 2 times Eggman was truly evil for the games it would have to be Sonic Unleashed and Eggman from the Metal Virus series from the comics though he made silly oversights with the Zombots I feel like the Comics get his character right. Whereas when you see him in the games now it’s like Team Rocket well Eggman is here you know his plan is going to blow up in his face now.

There are 2 reasons why Robotnik could outrun Sonic in 16-bit Sonic 2 . 1- Sonic got extra exhausted after defeating and destroying Silver Sonic mark 2 . 2- Robotnik used the Power Shoes power-up to run faster because the power-ups in Sonic games are contained in monitors so that means Robotnik built the monitors for his Badniks to use .
Funny you bring up reason 2; in AoStH’s “Full Tilt Tails” Robotnik created a special gum, he calls it “Speediment Gum”, as a means to have anyone who possesses it to get speed, once it’s chewed, that is.

It sounds silly because it's a name you could make up on the fly, I called a badnik in SRB2 "Bombbro" one time. Although the name Eggman has always been used in sillier versions, but Robotnik in more serious ones, so maybe that's why that preconception is there. For example, AOSTH Robotnik is funny as hell, that's why it doesn't strike fear into you.

I consider them the same character. Gens explanation for classic characters in the modern timeline made sense, Forces just borked it.

@@AceCardGaming while Classic Eggman can come off as goofy, I thought AoStH Robotnik best encapsulates the subtlety of Robotnik looking goofy on the outside and threatening on the inside, whilst SatAM Robotnik comes off as superior on the outside but inferior on the inside. Yes, SatAM Robotnik took over a kingdom, but they ended the show with not just a cliffhanger, but with Robotnik being defeated amongst the aftermath. AoStH Robotnik is proud of being evil and is not afraid to tell off anyone who stands against him; even goes so far as to make a bold claim (near the end of “Must’ve Been a Beautiful Baby”) that he conquered most of the planet, just by showing off his trophy collection like a public flasher.
AoStH Robotnik even went so far as to make murder attempts. For example, in "Robotnikland", Robotnik had trapped Sonic and his friends inside a giant cake, and had 10-ft sticks of dynamite as candles. Near the end of the "Quest for the Chaos Emeralds" saga, Robotnik had tied Sonic and Tails to their time traveling skateboard, and threw them so hard and so far, that they end up at the Beginning of the Universe, where they almost got killed by the Big Bang. The final episode, "Hero of the Year" (appropriately a clipshow), had Sonic stuck in a bathosphere to let him suffer from lack of oxygen, and for good measure, Robotnik sank a giant ship that the bathosphere was connected to, the same ship that has Sonic's friends on it. So yes, I saw AoStH Robotnik as a much *better* representation of in-Game Eggman in terms of personality, because even petulant childishness can be effective in a villain, only if the villain's compacity for violence greatly contrasts his immature behavior.

He is looking for a god of destruction to use it as a mere weapon, as well as making sure sonic is dead whenever he sees him, there are no in-games cutscenes involving him asside from a few in egg fortress, where he uses a time reversing machine to repair his space station and then it's final mech, and doesn't care that said station is litterally falling appart while fighting sonic, HE WANTS HIM COMPLETELY OBLITERATED and nothing will change his minds

Jokes aside, I always liked a mix with the silly and menacing to Robotnik.
First off I mean look at him, He is shaped like an Egg, Builds a lot of Egg themed Robots, and his plan is to bulid "Robotnik/Eggman Land" What a silly scheme. Even how he is written in the JP manuel have lines like ""You see, Sonic?! This time it's different. I've turned all the animals on the island into robots."
"They'll all do what I tell them to. In other words, the whole island is your enemy. Hahahahaha... cough cough. This time, the whole world will be mine." And im fine with a silly villain however the menacing side also works for him. The Early Sonic game had a "Nature vs Machine" Theme to them. And Robotniks goal is to make a world full with machines he does not give a crap about nature. And Sonic who represent what good in the world does not like Putting animals into Robots, So he goes to stop him because in his mind, Capturing animals to power up Robots "That no good". While his name in Japan is "Eggman" just because he has an silly name does not mean he cant be Menacing. This man thinks he is the best (You could also argue that he is the EGGMAN!" And looking for rocks, Tricking Echidnas, Finding anicent creatures, Making Robots, are ways to conquer this planet. And as we have seen in a lot of Sonic games like the Death egg from Sonic 3 or the Bad futures of Sonic CD, This is not a funny place for babys, this is what he can do Sonics world. While a lot of Sonic fans like to shit on Sonic Colors just because it has a bad story, I do wonder what will happen if Eggman was using this mind control thing to the planet. But again Sonic needs to stop Fat man. So uh Robotnik can be silly and evil. The end, Also i dont agree with Movie Robotnik act like "Dr. Eggman" from the games, He is just Jim carry and im very suprised that many many people have no problem with this even do he is completly out of Character in this movie. Everyone shit on 2010 Eggman because he is too silly but i would argue that this is a more faithfull version of the Doctor. Movie Robotnik is just Jim Carry and why does no one say something about it. But you know one day we hated the serious storys then we began to love the silly storys and then we began to love the serious storys and we hated the silly ones. This fanbase is weird, Do fun fact, Robotnik over in Europe and North america they wanted to make him more serious and meanicing. Look at his American design he does not look like a funny man he is scary. And the closes we ever got to "Normal Eggman" Was in Aosth. Fun fact Tails called him Eggman in Aosth, It was only one time but hey that cool. And while i do love Aosth and Satam versions of the characther. I will always perfer Game Eggman. Also i know this is very unrelated but Scratch & Grounder(s) theme in Aosth is amazing. I feel like with Robotnik (Classic eggman) He was undeterred by his losses too much at first, but as he kept losing over and over, he kept getting more annoyed, leading to hatred, and a cycle of insanity, trying the same thing "putting animals in robots" to stop Sonic and rule the world, until he eventually lost his cool
HOWEVER: In my opinion, Movie Eggman is done the best! It starts off with him being... mostly sane, but still a bit of a nutjob, who is heartless to an extent, but not evil, keeping his cold intentions to destroy sonic, Sonic 2 he's been in the mushroom planet alone, and finally made it back, surely that took a mental toll, and it kinda did, and further descending down his sanity, eggman wants nothing more than to stop sonic and get his revenge in this movie, through all means necessary, but ultimately fails to super sonic, In the "Official sonic movie 2 Pre-quill" comic, there's a monologue coming from eggman, that agent stone was recalling on, as he went through his life, describing how he's taken an appriciation to agent stone, being able to keep up, to some extent, and giving him advice to keep himself in the "eggman mindset" which details how every person fits a stereotype perfectly, allowing them to be exploited in many different ways. Comparing them to the likes of a robot, albeit, with humans having an unpredictability factor. Sonic 3... not much can be said, but after facing defeat from super sonic, and then shadow coming on the loose, eggman has to team up with sonic his nemesis, showing that while he hates him, he isn't blinded by his hatred, though when he's introduced, he's taken far less care of himself, being far more overweight, and resembling classic robotnik a bit more.
I’m glad that even though these characters are meant to show nature vs the machines, it doesn’t depict machines as evil cause they still Tails. It’s only the misuse of it

The main issue with Eggman now is that he’s become a slapstick villain now, don’t get me wrong I have a soft spot for Boom Eggman for his banter with Sonic and the others and I always liked the Eggman from the Genesis games and Sonic Mania but I think the last 2 times Eggman was truly evil for the games it would have to be Sonic Unleashed and Eggman from the Metal Virus series from the comics though he made silly oversights with the Zombots I feel like the Comics get his character right. Whereas when you see him in the games now it’s like Team Rocket well Eggman is here you know his plan is going to blow up in his face now.

There are 2 reasons why Robotnik could outrun Sonic in 16-bit Sonic 2 .
1- Sonic got extra exhausted after defeating and destroying Silver Sonic mark 2 .
2- Robotnik used the Power Shoes power-up to run faster because the power-ups in Sonic games are contained in monitors so that means Robotnik built the monitors for his Badniks to use .
Funny you bring up reason 2; in AoStH’s “Full Tilt Tails” Robotnik created a special gum, he calls it “Speediment Gum”, as a means to have anyone who possesses it to get speed, once it’s chewed, that is.

It sounds silly because it's a name you could make up on the fly, I called a badnik in SRB2 "Bombbro" one time.
Although the name Eggman has always been used in sillier versions, but Robotnik in more serious ones, so maybe that's why that preconception is there. For example, AOSTH Robotnik is funny as hell, that's why it doesn't strike fear into you.
