There are creatures in the sea hiding their true natures, defying our attempts to easily classify them, deceiving us into believing that they are crabs… When, in fact, they are not.

It’s been carcinization’s world since at least the Cretaceous Period and the rest of us just live in it. But why would a crustacean go from being more lobster-shaped to being more crab-shaped?
One possible explanation is that being rounder and flatter makes crustaceans more mobile and helps them invade many more different kinds of habitats. They seem to be able to climb, burrow, run, walk, and swim more efficiently than their lobster-shaped relatives. Crab-shaped crustaceans might also be better able to get away from predators, since they don’t have a long tail that can be grabbed.
If you’re a fan of false crabs, our sister show @eons has the merch for you. Their imposter crab pin features a false crab in a literal disguise and the puzzle showcases a paleoartists’s reconstruction of Platykotta akaina, the oldest known fossil member of the false crab group.

Ur voice is lovely
They really missed an opportunity to call them imitation crab
🤣🤣
You mean "krab"? o_O
The perfect joke! 😂
Lol. That's great
Or "Great Value Crab"! 🤪
I'm looking forward to eventually evolving into a crab-like being myself.
craaaab people, craaaab people!
🎶 I wanna be a crab 🎶
You can always become a hermit.
Humans being mammals, we'd probably go through mustelification instead of carcinization.
@@sowilo1324 shhhhhhhh.......
We can dream.
Everyone else: this is not even my final form!
True crabs: this is our final form!
This is everyone's final form!
My favorite deep sea imposters are the sea spiders. Not spiders, and weird as heck.
Pycnogonida, they're very weird, most of their organs are also inside their legs, they even have specialized legs thats full of eggs in females, and are the males that carry for the fertilized eggs, they have an uncommon body segmentation among arthropods, and are classified in the Chelicerata clade, although some more studies may change our current understanding about this group.
But there are in fact under water spiders and they actually still do build webs under water.
They're funny little things. Wish I can keep some in an aquarium and freak out my relatives.
@Brian H Also sea horses and catfish. Imposters everywhere man...
@@silent_stalker3687 But Water Spiders mostly live in freshwater wetlands and ponds.
I noticed the false crabs seem to like walking forward while true crabs walk sideways
Very keen observation. Thank you for your comment.
The segment with the "crabs" floating with the blue background looks straight up like an old Windows screensaver 😅
I had to take a snapshot and do a reverse image search to determine what the other critter at 2:55 was. It's a Pannychia moseleyi, a type of sea cucumber. Very lovely creature!
Correction, Brachyura is not an order, it is actually an infraorder, the whole order is actually Decapoda.
I'm liking despite my complete ignorance to the truth since you seem to know more than I do
🤓
Terrestrial true crabs have 4 pairs of walking legs, but most aquatic true crabs converted their hind pair into "backfins" that they use to swim, usually reserved for emergency situations when the crab is in danger.
Also, ask anybody who lives near the Chesapeake bay and they'll tell you that the backfin on a blue crab is the most delicious thing you'll ever eat.
no, thats only the swimming crab family, which does include the blue crab.
Sounds like the Google assistant been smokin a lil green leaf before the recording session.
king crab has a sweet crabby meat, convergent evolution at its best
@aleksander popov - Unfortunately the U.S. crab fishing industry in Alaska has nearly depleted the King Crab populations in that area leading to cancellation of crab fishing season this year.
"The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) announced it was canceling crab seasons in different parts of the state for the 2022/2023 fishing season."
@@wickedcabinboy That's not the US industry, thats Chinese flagged vessels that ignore warnings and overfish in international waters.
@@bthatguy1181 - Quite possibly so, still the population is depleted enough to have sparked cancellation of the the fishing season for this year.
Considering how many species eventually evolve into something crab-like you'd think there would be way more science fiction examples of crab-form aliens...
One Punch Man?
well, they're not sexy enough for a mainstream audience
avatar wouldn't have been so popular if neytiri was a six-limbed primatoid instead of blue big tiddy space babe
idk half life lore lol are they aliens idk but head crabs are *kind* of crab like beyond their name and the like xenomorph "drones??" I guess facehuggers then by extension but yeah nah still not really that crabbish
How do we know they are evolving into something crab like and most aren't crab like and evolving away from it?
The form doesn't really lend itself to tool creation and use.
if the vampire squid is older than both squid and octopi, then how is it a pretender? isn't it the original, and then squid and octopi would be the pretenders 😹
But it wasn’t a crab. It was a SQUAT LOBSTER!
Squat lobster! Down, down...
Someone described them as hamburger style vs. hot dog style and that's in my head forever now.
The narrator's voice is so soothing!
Listen to David Attenborough she’s too “sss” makes the S noise too much
This is so trippy to watch while high. Plus her voice is hella soothing and perfect for this format, she got that documentary voice.
I'm more shocked that comments the voice are ranked lower than about crabs
*gets high just to watch Bizzare Beasts. I admire you sir.
@@dineshkrishnan4029 Thank ye kindly. 😸
Crab ASMR
Honestly, if it is Crab-Shaped, smells like a crab, tastes like a crab and acts like a crab, it should be a crab
And now before giving you the details of the battle, I bring you a warning: Everyone of you listening to my voice, tell the world, tell this to everybody wherever they are. Count their legs.
Thanks. I will...
By the number of their legs shall ye know them!
the relaxation these deep sea videos bring me is immeasurable
I just feel puny and insignificant
Her voice is so soothing and peaceful 🌊
So, are those king crabs related to the king crab legs you can eat? If so, they taste a lot like crabs for being a different crustacean.
Yes, king Crab legs are the legs of king crabs, which are false crabs.
Nice
*sings "squat lobstersssss!" In tone of rock lobster
Eventually all evolves into crab
Arthropods (colloquially known as bugs) are divided into two major clades, the first of these is the subphylum Myriochelata (Myriochelates), which is split into two lineages, which are the superclasses Myriapoda (Myriapods) with the classes Pauropoda (Pauropods), Symphyla (Symphylans), Diplopoda (Millipedes), and Chilopoda (Centepedes) and Chelicerata (Chelicerates) with the classes Pycnogonida (Sea Spiders), Merostomata (Horseshoe Crabs and Fossil Relatives), and Arachnida (Arachnids), the second clade is the subphylum Pancrustacea (Pancrustaceans), which is also composed of two lineages, which are the superclasses Crustacea (Crustaceans) with the classes Ostracoda (Ostracods), Maxillopoda (Maxillopods), Thecostraca (Thecostracans), Hexanauplia (Hexanauplians), Malacostraca (Malacostracans), Cephalocarida (Cephalocaridans), Branchiopoda (Branchiopods), and Remipedia (Remipeds) and Hexapoda (Hexapods) with the classes Entognatha (Non-Insect Hexapods) and Insecta (Insects).
Hexapoda forms a clade nested within Crustacea as a sister clade to Remipedia.
Actually, hexapods and crustaceans are separate superclasses within the subphylum Pancrustacea, so crustaceans are a monophyletic group.
@@indyreno2933 while in separate superclasses, Crustacean is a a paraphyletic group with remepedia being more closely related to hexapods than they are to any other crustacean except Cephalocardia, based on molecular and genetic studies since 2012.
It used to be thought that Crustacea was monophyletic, but the first evidence against that occurred a decade ago and further studies have backed that up.
There are only seventeen extant classes of arthropods within four superclasses and two subphyla, the four superclasses of arthropods are Myriapoda (Myriapods (contains 4 classes: Pauropoda (Pauropods), Symphyla (Symphylans), Diplopoda (Millipedes), and Chilopoda (Centipedes)), Chelicerata (Chelicerates (contains 3 classes: Pycnogonida (Sea Spiders), Merostomata (Horseshoe Crabs and Fossil Relatives), and Arachnida (Arachnids)), Crustacea (Crustaceans (contains 8 classes: Ostracoda (Ostracods), Maxillopoda (Maxillopods), Thecostraca (Thecostracans), Hexanauplia (Hexanauplians), Malacostraca (Malacostracans), Cephalocarida (Cephalocaridans), Branchiopoda (Branchiopods), and Remipedia (Remipeds)), and Hexapoda (Hexapods (contains 2 classes: Entognatha (Non-Insect Hexapods) and Insecta (Insects)), the two subphyla of arthropods are Myriochelata (Myriochelates (contains 2 superclasses: Myriapoda (Myriapods) and Chelicerata (Chelicerates)) and Pancrustacea (Pancrustaceans (contains 2 superclasses: Crustacea (Crustaceans) and Hexapoda (Hexapods)).
Wow, Sarah's voice is so unearthly calm and deep, just as deep see she is talking about
But I am missing her as a wonderful fun host of older, non so deep videos :)
She speaks so slowly I'd have assumed she was a lobotomy survivor.
I love the calmness of these deep sea asmr Bizarre Beasts! 🥰
I had to put it on 2x speed, because it was annoying the excrement out of me, haha.
I got here because of the latest EONS video where they promoted this channel, but yeah, first and last video for me.
(EDIT: And i NEVER change the speeds of videos otherwise (not hyperbole), so yeah, it definitely did not click with me.)
To paraphrase Haldane, it appears that god has an inordinate fondness for crabs too.
Angel: Hey God, whatcha making?
God: Just an animal, don't worry about it.
Angel: ...
Angel: It's crabs again, isn't it?
Crabulous
I noticed there's a lot of "sibilant s" sounds in this video. Maybe you can try using a de-esser in your post production or sitting farther away from the mic when recording (I know, the closet and close mics make amazing podcast recordings) or speak at the microphone off-axis so the S sounds aren't picked up so directly. Sorry to mention this, but it was distracting for an otherwise Hypnotic (to fall asleep to) video ❤️
Should make a an hour long documentary like this
I suspect if we find Complex alien life it will be crab shaped
‘DumDum Dum Dum DadadaDummm SQUAT LOBSTAH! DadadaDum!
I was in a sub!.. Dadadadum!
I saw all these crabs just floating around!’
Awesome.
So many things want to be crabs.
So, you mean to tell me that King Crab isn't crab? This is like when I learned that King Cobra aren't really cobras.
Is the Kingfisher really a fisher? Is the King of England really of England? When we Yaaas king, is that really a yaaaas? 😱
4:19
Did she just diss the entire science community?
The narration was splendid! 🖤🖤🖤
My new sleep therapist
We have two choices
Either return to monke
Or become crab
Embrace butter sauce become lunch.
Looks pretty crabby to me... In fact, they look downright disgruntled!
B-52’s accent: “SQUAT LOBSTER!”
they’re not crabs but they sure are tasty
The way you said "count their legs," combined with the otherworldly music you use for background sound, makes me think of Welcome to Night Vale in the best of ways.
Narrator: A swarm of so-called Tuna Crab
Tuna Crab: crab crab crab crab float frighten crab crab
So this is inside crab fingers😂
Carcinization Event Number [unknown]
Thankyou for sharing.
man i love the intro with the bells
I don't care if they're crabs or lobster, or not, I care about how they pair with butter.
Ah yes the crab body plan, plan for the crab, the crab body, the crab's plan
Was there a crab before "True crabs"?
No, but there were decapod crustaceans back as far as _Palaeopalaemon newberryi_ in the Devonian.
That vampire squid looks like Misdreavus
thats exactly what a crab would say
These scientists funky as hell. Why put 'crabs' in their name if they ain't crabs ong
The intro music playing right after the zoom on the "crab" really set the nope tone for the episode. One thing I'm interested in tho... We keep asking why things turn into crabs. And that's good to keep asking. But why were things more shrimp or lobster-like before?
Excellent bedtime content, your voice is very comforting. I fell right asleep
1. So it’s a crab?
2. Always has never been
why does this video sound like asmr
Wait, why doesn’t that hidden pair of legs count as the fourth set? Butterflies do something similar. Their third pair is tucked away up front, giving them the appearance of having 4 legs, but they are still insects.
The bedroom tone made this feel like a asmr for crabs. We’re you not trying to wake a baby or something. If someone told you that a sexy voice would be best I think they were pranking you
Relax... You're getting sleepy... And now at the end of the sound of the bell, you'll wake up and notice the extra legs... You're now a crab...
"You mean to tell me it's all crabs, all the way down??"
"It always has been"
Tuna crabs remind me of spiders just chillin in their webs. King crabs I have been eating on occasion my whole life, and now they are false crabs? Makes sense I guess when looking at insects and arachnids.
AMAZED AND BEWILDEERED. Ordinary Time.
that claw orientation reminds me of hermit crabs
2 minutes of research later: looks like i was on to something!
yep, it's not only spiders that make me uncomfortable... just any animal with a lot of long thing legs
This is the video you would listen to when you are having trouble sleeping..
He's a False King crab.
We must find the True heir to the Crabby Throne
They've always looked more spider-like and even walk differently from crabs; a false king!
no, there are plenty more false crabs than this video showed. some are walk just like normal crabs. she also forgot to mention, false crabs have antenae behind their eyes (true crabs have them between the eyes).
What happens if you boil it.
So doctor.... you say I don't have crabs?? Phew 🤣🤣🤣
"In the depths of the ocean, many things are not..... crabs."
THIS IS NOT A CRAB - tell that to my pot of boiling water.
@2:31 Am I the only one who automatically yelled out 'Squat Lobster!" ala B-52's style?
Lol king crab living up the saying of the pretender to the throne
That’s why one of our proverb states “Bagai ketam mengajar anaknya jalan mengiring” so this statement truly show they can destinguish between true and false crab
Her voice sounds like she’s telling me a good bedtime story 😅
so you telling me the expensive king crab i bought was just imitation crabs...i feel scammed
they’re still crustaceans
But it wasn't a crab... SQUAT LOBSTER!
When Galadriel narrates the evolution of sea creatures…
What were the long white ones in the sea floor with the king crabs? A kind of sea cucumber?
Yes. I think they're _sea pigs_ which also have a Bizarre Beasts video.
Species should be categorized into branches based upon how we eat them. If you bring me one of those things and I can clean it, boil it, and enjoy its legs with butter, then it IS in fact a crab. It's meaningful functional relationship to me, and essentially; my stomach makes it a crustacean, and specifically a crab. The is less convoluted than phyle's / clades / orders / species ect.
I like these videos and I appreciate that the pace of the ocean is a bit subdued, but I have to watch these at 1.25 speed or they make me sleepy...
I swear to god if you say spider I'm NEVER watching another video of yours
DUN-NA DUN-NA DUNNANANANANA, SQUAT LOBSTER!
I came here to make the same comment lol 😂
As soon as she said that, I was B-52ing all over the place!🤣🤣
It wasn’t a carb…it was a SQUAT LOOOOBSTER!
I *love* this
"YOU WERE NEVER ONE OF US. LET US OPEN YOUR EYES, CRABS"
Sea life is so relaxing and fascinating🦀
So this is why I can eat king crabs even if I am allergic to crabs!
I found it interesting that what is commonly eaten as crabs isn't crabs
Despite named Vampire Squid, they eat marine falls, or sh*t
Carcinisation is by far my most favourite Tumblr meme
Thank you
This means that they can be sold as real imitation crab!
1:57
Hey they are doing their Best, okay? Don't judge them that hard
It is now. We can't be picky since the real ones apparently disappeared. Bag em and tag em fellas. Get the crab boil going
"a vampire squid is not a squid" she didnt say i wasent a vampire so i guess it is
I wonder if it’s possible for an animal to evolve into a true crab and meet all the requirements to be a true crab
Should've called the episode "Ceci n'est pas une crab"
Narrated by Magritte, perhaps?
@@mariashaffer-gordon3561 either that or Hank with a French accent, moustache and hat, and a stupid long cigarette holder with a crab leg hanging out instead of the cigarette
The ultra slow narration bits are killing me
