Note: Almost one year to the day that this video was posted, Polaroid released a new film type called Polaroid Go. It is about the same width as Instax Mini, but in a square aspect ratio. The film costs $19.99 for two 8-shot packs. You can watch my video on the new camera/film here: ua-cam.com/video/b0FT9T60lrk/v-deo.html
Definitely one of the best videos explaining the instant films available right now. So packed with information, knowledge, analysis and humour! Absolutely a fun watch! Can see you have done extensive research and are very knowledgeable and passionate about instant films and cameras. I nodded so much when I watched this that my head almost fell off. I own a few of the cameras you showed and use all of them except the Instax Square and the Polaroid 8 x 10, so it is really great knowing there are a group of people out there sharing the same passion and interest in these fun analog photography. Really enjoyed this video. Keep the great work up, and thank you Ben!
Thank you Calvin! I appreciate the kind words about the vid and the channel. I definitely put a lot of hard work into each second of each video so it means a lot to read a react like this!
Hi Ben, I have a large collection of Instax and Polaroid cameras. The 8x10 will camera in my collection in the future. I love instant photography. Thanks for another great video.
The production of these video’s are just 👏🏻 the research and writing then broken down with the animations and talking head segments are so informative but not loving winded and confusing! It’s a shame they’ve only got 2.2k subs (as of this comment) ‘cause I feel like they could break down ANY creative product and I’d feel so confident in their breakdown of the product and its functions! Well done, some of the best product vids on YT 👍🏻
Wow, thank you Lucy! That is so nice to hear and I really appreciate the support. Who knows how UA-cam will factor me into the mysterious algorithm, but hopefully the subscriber count and views continue to rise so I can keep doing this for years to come!
Omg I'm Dutch and I never knew that we were the ones fighting for Polaroid! That's cool. I adore instant film and have the instax mini 8 and instax sq6. I love them both, both the format is a little small, as you said. Maybe I'll check out the wide, even though the cameras are CHUNKY. Cool video!
I don't know whether to thank you or curse you. This was exactly the video I was looking for out of casual interest and it answered all my questions. What I didn't count on was your infectious enthusiasm. Doggone it, I can't afford another film format! Urgh!!!
What a great video ben! But I hope you will make a video about a dead instant film and instant camera, like polaroid spectra and spectra film or even polaroid land camera and peel apart film 🙏🏻
Recent discovered your channel and I love it, great videos. I'm using instant photography for almost 50 years and have seen many formats come and go. Except the 8 x 10 I use all current available formats depending on my needs or purpose. I visited the "Impossible Factory" back in 2011. It's an impressive experience. Already looking forward to the next video, keep on the good work.
I love to hear stuff like this, thanks RJ! Hopefully one day I can shoot an episode at the factory and maybe stop by Supersense as well. Basically the motherland at this point!
Perfect video ! Polaroid photography is literally my drug. I follow you on Instagram since a moment, but I didn't know you were making videos on UA-cam. Even if I can't understand all (bc I'm french and I'm not fluent in English), I love to learn more about Instant Photography. Thank you so much. This is my new favorite channel ! 😄
Maybe my girlfriend can translate the videos to French! Haha but seriously thanks for following along the journey! I feel the same way about instant photography.
Instax wide is so much more of a viable format now with the release of the Lomograflok. Not only do you have access to 98% of 4x5 cameras but DIY conversions with old Polaroids or even 3D printed bodies. This really opens up a lot of opportunities for Instax film so long as Fuji wants to keep Wide around
Love this channel you’re very knowledgeable and I subscribed. Can’t wait for the next vid. I used to love going to flea markets and finding Polaroid and getting them to work. Now I love the new polaroids and my son can too!
Great video, I really like your production level! By the way, while there aren’t many cameras for the Instax Square format, there’s a great solution for shooting the format with an SLR medium format camera in the form of a interchangeable back for the Mamiya RB67 by Coyote Camera Works. The image quality of the Mamiya lenses blows out of the water any other Instax camera and the SLR framing and focusing is perfect. It’s a nice choice for photographers that want something other than the usual instant experience.
Thank you mate! Definitely interested in the Coyote back but they are incredibly difficult to find. They simply did not produce enough product for the demand, but I agree the results are far beyond anything else really, understandably so.
If Fuji would release an Instax Bluetooth printer like the Mini, I’d be all over it. That’s the format I really want as I like shooting Fuji cameras (not the plastic ones); the Mini has the right rectangular shape, but are tiny pics for teens with toy-looking cameras. Props for Fuji identifying a market and going with it, it seems to have worked, although in the world of teens, being “cool” is fickle. But it has carried them through to now, when adults might be more ready to embrace Instant film again. Like flares and disco music... perhaps? You don’t have to hide your Abba and BeeGees vinyl collection anymore. I seriously considered getting an Instax 500af, but realistically know I can’t afford it, and am self-conscious enough I probably wouldn’t end up using it much. All I really want is an Instax Wide printer for my Fuji camera.
Having to Engineer Gaming™ up some Instax cardstock adapters for Kodak instant camera's sure is a way to start this hobby after coming back from the thrift store.
As I've commented before, I absolutely adore my SQ6. Yeah its not got the best lens on it but at least it is a glass lens. Its very easy to blow out the image or underexpose with it but when you get the shot right...... _Oh Man_ do you get it right. My only fear is that Fuji may discontinue it as whenever I go to target/walmart/best buy they either dont carry the film or are out of stock.....
Yeah, the prevailing fear with Fuji is anything could disappear at any moment. I'm definitely concerned about that with Instax Wide, which is by far my fav Instax format!
Instax wide seems impossible to get hold of at the moment. I do hope it isn't on the way out. Thanks for a great overview and comparison of the formats.
Thank you for this video! The info about who is making Polaroid currently was especially helpful. I found a Polaroid One model from 2001 in my grandpa's things when I was helping my mom go through stuff and I balked at the price of the film, but now I want to use it when I go on trips, I think. Special film for a special occasion :) Wish I could afford to use it regularly though!
8x10 has a wow factor... just amazing. For the rest fuji is more for the point and shoot people, Polaroid is for the more advanced users still, but the new gen film is a good step up.
One more thing to consider if you’re shooting black and white: Fuji’s b&w are in my opinion not truely b&w as some color shines through and they have a distinct blueish tint. Polaroids on the other hand are beautiful and warm.
Love your channel thanks for all the work! I shot Polaroid since the Impossible project started and now I am really thinking about selling my SLR 670-S by Mint to get an RF70... I was just disappointed over and over again with bad film, light stripes and terrible color accuracy especially in the colder days... But, I just cant let go of this format. :/ The last beta film was better so I can only hope...
The film has improved dramatically, for sure! Latest 2020 stuff is as close it's ever been to the original Polaroid days. Cold temps are still tough but otherwise I'm loving it right now.
I love the instax mini for its fun sized, you can see the picture appear and I took it on my first trip To Universal. I also love Polaroid (grew up with that) to do pictures. It’s a learning curve but that’s the fun part. It’s hard to choose. ❤️both
I know! And the beauty is you don't have to choose. Something that's definitely delightful about an Instax print is it's much more "real time" than Polaroid. You can really watch it develop, where as with a Polaroid you really have to shield it from light and check on it in stages. Both have their place!
Excellent video - please keep it up. The world needs to know about instant photography so it can become more popular and we can get the manufacturers to make more cameras and film types :) I've never seen the 8x10 format before - now I want to invest in a camera that can take those photos. Any models you would recommend?
i was trying to go to sleep and after my video finished this one autoplayed. i am not trying to choose a size of instant photo. i already know i'm getting instax mini to glue silly little pictures in my silly little journal. i watched this video solely for this guys personality.
This video was fucking perfect. Like seriously it was FUCKING PERFECT. It was funny, informative, colorful and super easy to understand. I can not thank you enough. I cant wait to watch more videos from you! Mad love
I used the impossible project, fujifilm instax mini and wide. Those three have their unique benefits and drawbacks, but i would love to try the Polaroid original.
I like the fact that Fuji has an electronic digital Instax film recorder for the Mini format...I just wish printing on it could be done without needing their app or a phone, but on Linux instead. I do like having actual chemical photographs of Ragnar from the Vikings TV show plus all the stuff I hoovered up online...that they flat out won't let you print at the drugstore (let alone the ones under my mattress...wink...wink.)
super review of all the film formats! Definitely got a sub out of me my guy. Would love to see a "how to" for my sx70 on how to get the perfect exposure because it's so hard
Yeah, analog purists aren't big on that hybrid deal. The digital camera element/screen is a real put off (it's essentially just a digital camera with a printer), but I can understand why many users would not care about such a thing and prefer to look at exactly what they're shooting. While a swath of film folks will never buddy up to tech like that, it might be what Fuji has to do to survive going forward.
great video and very informative, can u please tell me whats the exact model of the camera in the middle, at the upper row in 08:38? the gray, more square one, i think i like it the most, seems more compact theen the rounder ones, thank You!
What’s with the shade throwing at Fuji? Just bought their new instax printer based on what I have seen on instant printers, Polaroid are nice but I watched various videos comparing print qualities and Fuji science seems to nail exposure where Polaroids seem to come out very warm and over exposed
I am a big instant user... since my Colorpack II from 1970, I love the stability of Fuji film, bat really love the size of Polaroid ... I keep hoping they get better at color, I am pretty pleased with their B&W film. I also love my Fuji Neo 90, but also wish there was a camera with more controls ... ancient SX70s can do wicked long exposure, why can't Fuji make something like that!!!
Fuji just can’t get it right with their cameras! The hardware they produce is strictly intended for mass market entry level users. Would be stunned if they ever released something impressive!
FerGudsSake... hitting me with the cheaper, more cameras, glass lenses, better colour chemistry for instax and fuji and JUST when I think I’ve made up my mind... then hits me in the feels with, independent creatives in the Netherlands, dedicated to the arts...other one is a big corporation, probably not very dedicated to its workers or the environment... great...right in the feels 😵
That's really the fundamental and existential question when choosing who you're going to support in this medium! But also, the beauty is you can just shoot both and everybody wins 😅 except your wallet 😳
I think it's a bit unfair to call Fujifilm a nameless and faceless corporation. If you look up their history and how they developed as a company originally, and then later adapted and pivoted in all the ways both Kodak and Polaroid failed to do. Fujifilm actually took all their film knowledge, expertise, and patents and used them to make photo copiers, printers, cosmetics and skin care products (turns out instant film and skin have a lot in common), and medical equipment (such as x-ray machines, ultra sound machines, MRI etc) you will come away with a lot of respect for Fujifilm as a company. There is reason they are still a multi billion dollar company while their peers are all shadows of their former selves.
Hi Frederic! I haven't noticed any fading on the modern Polaroid prints. If kept out of direct sunlight/properly stored, they should be fine for years to come!
Hey Andrew! While Polaroid has reverted to its original brand name, it's still the same company with the same people and the same information at their disposal as it was when The Impossible Project became "Polaroid Originals" in 2017. They didn't newly acquire any assets, Polaroid and Polaroid Originals were owned by the same folks. A lot of the chemistry was "lost" amidst the OG Polaroid going defunct in 2008. Many of the chemicals and components used to produce the original film ceased production and cannot return because companies are defunct and environmental laws prohibit it. That all being said, the formula they built back up from scratch at The Impossible Project is still being ever-improved by Polaroid and as of the 2/20 batch, people have been pretty psyched by the progress. Myself included!
You forget one drawback of Instax, the solarization. I tried Instax, but I don't like when something strong light source is turning black on the picture.☹️
Good point Alex! That can be extremely annoying. I think you sort of get used to it and it becomes an unconscious thing you know to avoid, but occasionally it even happens with flash which is ridiculous.
Hey, I have a vintage polaroid impulse portrait. It says in the description it uses polaroid 600 plus film, can i still use polaroid 600 (vintage) film?
I am loving this channel going through every video while in lockdown. Love the energy you have on camera, however your channel will be dangerous for my wallet.
Peter Gault Certainly true with me. I went back to photography thanks to lockdown making retirement even more limited and found this channel while looking for tips on my beloved SX-70. What happens is I wind up tracking down a refurbished 680 and a Fuji 500AF after going through the series so far. I’ve got to admit in spite of the learning curve that makes for a number of photos I’m trying to coax my dog to nibble, I’m having a ball. Each camera has its charms. And I’m having a ball learning to use them. My dog clearly thinks I’m nuts, but she loves me anyway and sometimes poses for me . . . if you can call napping posing.
I love this Joan! And love that you got back into photography. My bad for leading you toward those purchases 😂 but I can tell you’re loving those cameras, such an awesome experience learning how to master those things. And I’m sure your dog is doing its best at modeling 🐕
Quick question: approximately how much can you save on Polaroid's rewards program percentage-wise? I found a local option for 600 film that could be slightly cheaper than the 75 EUR / 40-pack (plus shipping across the EU) they're selling it for, but this could flip the scale, and honestly, I'd just love to support them directly even though all film comes from them in the end.
Answering my own question because I just impulse bought an Impulse AF: it's about 20 EUR on every other five pack of film. Also, shipping is around 15 EUR across the EU unless you buy a camera which sadly negates the benefit, so I guess I'm gonna go with my local dealer. At least the gateway drug is coming in the same package as the camera though.
The rewards program is pretty powerful. Seems that the high shipping cost in the EU is a bit of a problem though, so I think you're going the right route unless you were making a major bulk purchase, in which you'd earn quite a hefty reward that would compensation for the shipping cost.
Please, 30 years ago, a pack of 600 film in Australia was 25.00. That's $50.00 in today's money. Granted that was for 10 pictures, but US19.00 is a bargain!
Note: Almost one year to the day that this video was posted, Polaroid released a new film type called Polaroid Go. It is about the same width as Instax Mini, but in a square aspect ratio. Much appreciate that mate 🙌🏻
All the graphics blow my mind. Making all that would seem pretty difficult.
@@eastphotoz454 It's definitely tough haha, absolutely the "bottleneck" in the editing process, but I gotta do it!
I just found this channel today and I've already watched about 7 of the videos. Great content!
Very helpful! 💚 Definitely going to support Polaroid. Maybe I’ll get a wide Fuji down the line
The amount of quality and production put into these videos are truly appreciated! 👍🏾🙏🏾

What’s with the shade throwing at Fuji? Just bought their new instax printer based on what I have seen on instant printers, Polaroid are nice but I watched various videos comparing print qualities and Fuji science seems to nail exposure where Polaroids seem to come out very warm and over exposed
Did you know that the Neutral Density filter makes 600 film SX-70 compatible?
I am a big instant user... since my Colorpack II from 1970, I love the stability of Fuji film, bat really love the size of Polaroid ... I keep hoping they get better at color, I am pretty pleased with their B&W film. I also love my Fuji Neo 90, but also wish there was a camera with more controls ... ancient SX70s can do wicked long exposure, why can't Fuji make something like that!!!
Fuji just can’t get it right with their cameras! The hardware they produce is strictly intended for mass market entry level users. Would be stunned if they ever released something impressive!
The death of Spectra will never be forgotten
There is reason they are still a multi billion dollar company while their peers are all shadows of their former selves.
i love your channel !
thanks for the great comparison. Did you notice that the polaroid shots disappear over time, whereas Instax stay intact?
Hi Frederic! I haven't noticed any fading on the modern Polaroid prints. If kept out of direct sunlight/properly stored, they should be fine for years to come!
dude! your videos are amazing =D
Thank you mate!!
Hey Ben! I love the channel. Do you know if Polaroid will start using the old film formulas now that they have aquired the original brand and patents?
@@InAnInstant Thank you for the information! :D I cant wait to see what the future holds. Keep up the great work. The channel is amazing!
Keith Haring lives!
So what would say is the best instant camera and film based on photo quality
Instant Like to this!
Did you know you can buy a pack film back for a model 95 camera
So good, funny man!
Thank you Lisa!!
I wish there were more options for the instax wide.
Totally. It's one of the great travesties of the format!
They need to make a new updated Instax camera for the wide format
You forget one drawback of Instax, the solarization. I tried Instax, but I don't like when something strong light source is turning black on the picture.☹️
Good point Alex! That can be extremely annoying. I think you sort of get used to it and it becomes an unconscious thing you know to avoid, but occasionally it even happens with flash which is ridiculous.
Very aesthetic tho
I'm a Fuji guy, so Instax Wide it is.
Hey, I have a vintage polaroid impulse portrait. It says in the description it uses polaroid 600 plus film, can i still use polaroid 600 (vintage) film?
Yes indeed you can!
I am loving this channel going through every video while in lockdown. Love the energy you have on camera, however your channel will be dangerous for my wallet.
My mission is to burn a hole straight through that wallet! Haha thanks Peter!
In An Instant Haha I think you will be successful with that plan!
What’s a good/reliable place to buy second hand Polaroid cameras?
Definitely Polaroid, Retrospekt, Brooklyn Film Camera, and trusted Etsy sellers.
I heard impossible sued Fuji for copyrighting the Instax square from the Polaroid square 600 film.
Polaroid actually did that. Before Impossible bought them.
Wouldn't it be neat if one could just attach an instax printer to the bottom of a dslr like as an extra battery+printer accessory
do the instax cameras need batteries?
Polaroid now or Fujifilm sq6????
you should have added spectra for the lols
drawbacks: no longer produced
Hi. I was just curious. Why do you put the box of polaroids in the fridge?
Hi Sashi! Polaroid chemistry benefits from being stored in a consistent, cool temperature. If it isn't, the film will show more faults more quickly.
Please, 30 years ago, a pack of 600 film in Australia was 25.00. That's $50.00 in today's money. Granted that was for 10 pictures, but US19.00 is a bargain!
I hear ya, this has always been a pricier medium for sure!
I know The Leica instant camera also uses Instax Mini film, but is it any better than the Instax Mini cameras?
Hi Manuel! No, the camera is widely regarded as just a marketing ploy, it is not superior to others like it (just a licensing deal).
Is there any way of recycling the empty film cartage? I hesitate throwing it in the recycling bin.
If you remove the battery, you can dispose of the plastic container into the recycling and put the batteries in a battery disposal.
I don't understand if Polaroid can make 8x10 why can't they make pack film
Did somebody tell that you look like Keith Haring in some way?
I get it at least every couple weeks ya!! 😂😂
