My theory is that unlike teeth, Manes are inherently magical, as cutie marks are. That would explain why the manes of powerful ponies are flowy, and why you can't affect them with magic safely.
There was that one G1 episode where those Seuss-ian dog guys were kidnapping ponies to weave their magical manes into a cape for some pig queen. Of course in that episode the manes grew back almost instantly so...

It's funny that you mention it. Rarity can distinguish between two clasps that look exactly the same and between five crystals that look exactly the same. But can not she distinguish between two potions that look exactly the same? I guess for Rarity, fashion and potions do not match.
This episode just confirmed two things. 1.If Zecora would have just labeled the damn potions in the first place then Rarity's mane would not have gotten ruined. 2. Rarity's punk rock look just confirms my theory that her and Maud should form a rock band.
I have to say that Rarity has easily become one of my favorite characters. When I started the show way back in 2011, I thought I was going to hate her guts as she seemed like the selfish, fashion, girly girl stereotype. But as the show has progressed, Rarity has been the character to defy all tropes and own it, because while she is easily the girliest, she can also be badass when she wants to be and never backs down from helping a friend. She is also gives Fluttershy a run for her money as far as kindness goes, since she is always willing to help out here community and be a positive role model, on top of really learning to be a good big sister. She wants love, but is also independent, smart, and passionate about her work that she got to be a prominent figure in her industry by her own merits, with some assistance here and there. And, what I think I love most about her is how she really sells her purpose for being a fashionista: to bring out the beauty in others. She never makes fun of anyone for being unattractive, old, or weak, she just wants them to feel confident in themselves and believes a good look not only tells the world, but also the individual wearing it that they are exceptional in their own way and beautiful. She is such a positive figure, and even though she is a drama queen, she doesn't give up on people and her heart is always pure in her goal. Rarity truly embodies what it means to be a lady and she is always a delight, with some of the best episodes IMO. Even if the episode isn't A+, she is always great. Plus her voice actress is so good, and has one of the most soothing voices when singing.
What is bad about girly fashion girls? I am sporty like Rainbow Dash and confident but I am also girly like Rarity and I like fashion and people like me so what was your problem with Rarity? Also Rarity never was selfish.

How is it that Rarity can talk about her looks and I don't find it annoying? Normally when a character talks about how good looking they are or anything like that I get annoyed, but I didn't. How does a show aimed at little girls do that? When other shows that do the same thing have difficulty making me like that character? This is one of the smaller reasons why I love this show, lol. I love Rarity's punk rock look, I hope we see it again. The lesson was nice, accepting yourself no matter what. I think there might be another hidden lesson in it for Rarity: not depending on her looks that much and not using it to make other ponies do what she wants :J Remember that this was one of her main concerns she mentioned when she was in Twilight's castle: that she can't command ponies to do what she wants now when she doesn't have her beauty ploit :J
It comes off as confident rather than arrogant because Rarity's talent is a mirror of Mistmane's, in that she sees beauty in everything. She doesn't put other ponies down about their looks, and instead taps into their potential to feel more confident.
I think the reason for Zecora shooing Pinkie out the door, was because Pinkie had a huge mess to clean, Sugar Cube Corner was a business and needed to get back on it's feet, and she was more interested in stories.
I didn't even notice those things you pointed out before - Granny & Grandpear at the pear stand, Apple Bloom talking to Burnt Oak, and Sugar Belle walking with Big Macbon the farm! You've got an amazingly sharp eye! Definitely made watching this with you so much more enjoyable. I do think if anything, Sugar Belle would move to Sweet Apple Acres, as there's better business for her there than the Town with no name and one street, and more opportunities. I would love to see her intreractions with Granny Smith. Could be a nice sweet moment. You always give great clear explanations of your thoughts and concepts. It's part of what's so great about watching and listening to your commentary at the end of your reaction. So, I don't think you have to worry about that. You never sound horrible in your analysis and explanations. I loved seeing Zecora again. I'm really hoping they will delve into her story and her homeland and why she left. I just know she has an amazing story. And I'm glad you touched on Pinkie not noticing Rarity's new look at the end. If it's the case as you said with her not noticing physical appearances, that would be nice insight into the way she views things. I kind of have a theory as to why it might be hard to affect manes with magic. It is probably a long shot though. I just wonder if one's mane and tail are connected to their inner magic somehow. We see it most extremely in Pinkie, but I feel like there are plenty of cases of ponies' manes and tails becoming frazzled or unkempt when they're emotionally strained or drained, not just physically. And we also know that at least in some cases magic can be tied to emotion, hence how emotion could affect hair. And if that's the case it could make this make some sense because multiple magics interacting can get tricky. Again, major long shot though. XP

This Rarity episode was fun, another great pony breakdown episode. There was plenty of crazy shenanigans(which gave me a lot of laughs) and character cameos(which is also cool). It's great to see Zecora again, she's been in the dark for a while(ever since the S5 finale along with a few cameos in S6). Now, Rarity as a punk pony was amazing, probably the highlight of this episode. On a side note, seeing Diamond Tiara for a brief moment was nice but, I'm still waiting for her(and Silver Spoon) to get more development/their own episode(whichever sounds better). They've been in the background for way too long. Very nice reaction by the way.

my theory is that like a cutiemark, a mane is connected to ones core magic. Doing magical damage to a magical object can be very tricky to fix without altering the original magical item. Which also explains why even an alicorn can't help a mane and why that other mane shattered when it was seperated from its core magic. This has been an over-analytical explanation by Caramel Chord.
I really hope the next few episodes take place in between when Rarity lost her mane and when it grew back. I just want another chance to see "Punkity" in the show again, whether it be a background cameo or a full-blown feature.
I think Zecora was also onscreen for a moment in Fault in our Cutie Marks, when Gabby is helping with her cauldron. But that's just a really minor cameo.

I like your take on that minor Pinkie trait detail from this episode, though I think it can also be her serious weakness. She's been shown to have quite a few moments where she's truly completely oblivious to other's situations, feelings or consequences of certain actions. She can get caught up in the moment like Trixie or Rainbow. :)

Sorry for the comment spam, but your discussion keeps giving me more things to say. XD What you said about the whole comparison between Rarity and a chemo patient and her trying to make the most of the change she underwent, it made me think of some of the cool things people have made for those who have disabilities. I know there's ones I'm forgetting but what comes to mind are the awesome "wheelchair costumes", as the name implies a costume that incorporates a wheelchair into its design (like say dressing as a fireman with the chair looking like a fire truck). I just thought of that on the topic of trying a new look after an event like this even though it's not quite the same.
The way Rarity acted in this episode reminds me of a friend of mine, he had a massive lack of foresight (he's not the brightest guy I know) for a couple years and totally screwed up his teeth, apparently they all need to be taken out. He's super down about it and talks about hating himself, constantly, I just hope one day he can pull himself out of it and get better. And (Insert Name Here, you know who you are), if you're reading this. I hope you're doing okay.
The bit with the potions getting mixed up reminded me of The Emperor's New Groove when Kronk said "You know in my defense all your potions look alike, you might want to consider labeling them." Also when I saw Punk Derpy, I actually thought that was Tridashie's OC.
And I think this is the first time Starlight is show to now be part of the mane group now. On the way to Raritys, she looked right at home being part of it as a whole now.
Hoping this is a sign that she will be upgraded to main character in season 8. Mainly because right now she is still listed in places as only a side character, and that just doesn’t seem right anymore.

My theory: It is posible to accelerate the production of DEAD CELLS at the root of Rarity´s Hair; but it is super risky because it is basically zombie magic. -> If we take the case of Maneiac, the conection between hair, magic and emotions may cause permanent madness on a pony if done wrong.

I was surprised when Applegeek said we finally get to see Zecora again. I have seen every episode of MLP FiM, and I never realised that Zecora had been left out of the show for a while before Season 7.
I like all the secondary characters we see in this episode. However, the story isn't one of the season's strongest in my opinion. So this unfortunately failed to hit a home run for me. But given how many great episodes MLP has had this season there were bound to be one or two duds. Let's just hope they've got something big planned to for the finale.
I just think that with a mother like Spoiled Rich, she could use a older female role model she could relate to. In the end, both just really wanted real friends. Maybe throw in Silver Spoon. Plus it would give another reason to see her interacting with the CMC more. Make it a CMC/Starlight episode. DT is envious of the connection the CMC have to their older sisters. So enlists their help in finding one for herself. After several attempts with other ponies like Pinkie and Derpy, they find the perfect choice with Starlight. It would give DT a reason to appear in future episodes and continue Starlight's apparent quest to befriend all former antagonists. They really dropped the ball when it came to DT. Starlight could really benefit from this as well. You could tie Starlight's backstory with her. Maybe Starlight never had anyone growing up (I go with the theory that Starlight was an orphan.) Or maybe her own parents neglected her. Which would also expand on why she turned to the darkside. She literally had no one to comfort her after Sunburst left and tell her everything would be OK. Her reasons for turning wouldn't be considered weak anymore. There is actually a nice fanmade little comic where little Starlight is crying after Sunburst left. She says she will never see him again and wonders where her cutie mark is. Then she says maybe I'm just not special. It was just so heartbreaking. I think it was called 'The Ghosts of the Past will Haunt you forever.'. It makes you realize that maybe if someone was there for her maybe things could have turned out happier. That she was never a monster. Just a lost little pony that Twilight finally brought home. And I say to people who say she had a weak reason for turning. Imagine being that young with absolutely no one and only seeing a bleak future. How far do you think you would go to never have that happen again? And then having it all taken away again by Twilight. To be alone again. By that point, I wouldn't blame Starlight for not thinking straight. Except then she finally had a target to focus on. Twilight. Sorry to disappoint on the embarrassing moment. It was rather embarrassing for me in the moment. Looking back though, it's definitely chuckle-worthy, but not nearly as epic as some other reactions.
How has it only been ONE year since the Cake Twins' first sneeze? Unless they were like 3 years old the first time they sneezed. Even just going by the passage of time shown in the show, they have definitely been alive for *at least* 3 or 4 year's already. Even in this episode alone, several months pass, so time is definitely passing in the show. Even Flurry Heart would be like 2 by now, so the Cakes should definitely be older.

All of the Mane Six have grown so much that if I were to rearrange my favorites list, I would have to disregard, for lack of a better word, the progress made by the others. I did not want to do this. It's a nice idea that Pinkie wouldn't care so much about outward appearances. But she seemed kind of oblivious through most of the episode. Silver Quill has talked about how Pinkie is less funny when acting oblivious, and more funny when offering her own take on reality. This one seems more like the former. It's ironic, considering how she was the voice of reason in the previous episode. I think KP was right when she said the staff has several different writers working on different episodes at the same time, and there isn't always communication. I wish they'd pin down concepts like Pinkie's eccentricity more.
Agreed on your points at the end. Rarity was never my favorite pony, but she's really moving up the list a little as she shows she's growing as a mare and really dropping the air of poshness I felt she's been carrying with her. (personally opinion that is)

Just to make sure..they didn't claim that hair growing magic was impossible, just tricky. And none of our strong magic characters ever had much reason to train mane growing spells. It's funny that you mention it. Rarity can distinguish between two clasps that look exactly the same and between five crystals that look exactly the same. But can not she distinguish between two potions that look exactly the same? I guess for Rarity, fashion and potions do not match.
This episode just confirmed two things. 1.If Zecora would have just labeled the damn potions in the first place then Rarity's mane would not have gotten ruined. 2. Rarity's punk rock look just confirms my theory that her and Maud should form a rock band.
If Zecora labeled the potions we would have never gotten this episode.
I have to say that Rarity has easily become one of my favorite characters. When I started the show way back in 2011, I thought I was going to hate her guts as she seemed like the selfish, fashion, girly girl stereotype.
But as the show has progressed, Rarity has been the character to defy all tropes and own it, because while she is easily the girliest, she can also be badass when she wants to be and never backs down from helping a friend. She is also gives Fluttershy a run for her money as far as kindness goes, since she is always willing to help out here community and be a positive role model, on top of really learning to be a good big sister. She wants love, but is also independent, smart, and passionate about her work that she got to be a prominent figure in her industry by her own merits, with some assistance here and there.
And, what I think I love most about her is how she really sells her purpose for being a fashionista: to bring out the beauty in others. She never makes fun of anyone for being unattractive, old, or weak, she just wants them to feel confident in themselves and believes a good look not only tells the world, but also the individual wearing it that they are exceptional in their own way and beautiful. She is such a positive figure, and even though she is a drama queen, she doesn't give up on people and her heart is always pure in her goal.
Rarity truly embodies what it means to be a lady and she is always a delight, with some of the best episodes IMO. Even if the episode isn't A+, she is always great. Plus her voice actress is so good, and has one of the most soothing voices when singing.
What is bad about girly fashion girls? I am sporty like Rainbow Dash and confident but I am also girly like Rarity and I like fashion and people like me so what was your problem with Rarity? Also Rarity never was selfish.

How is it that Rarity can talk about her looks and I don't find it annoying? Normally when a character talks about how good looking they are or anything like that I get annoyed, but I didn't. How does a show aimed at little girls do that? When other shows that do the same thing have difficulty making me like that character? This is one of the smaller reasons why I love this show, lol. I love Rarity's punk rock look, I hope we see it again. The lesson was nice, accepting yourself no matter what. And seeing Zecora again was awesome, she's been missed Although yeah I'm shocked that they didn't think to give Rarity a wig. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.
I think there might be another hidden lesson in it for Rarity: not depending on her looks that much and not using it to make other ponies do what she wants :J Remember that this was one of her main concerns she mentioned when she was in Twilight's castle: that she can't command ponies to do what she wants now when she doesn't have her beauty ploit :J

It comes off as confident rather than arrogant because Rarity's talent is a mirror of Mistmane's, in that she sees beauty in everything.
She doesn't put other ponies down about their looks, and instead taps into their potential to feel more confident.
I think the reason for Zecora shooing Pinkie out the door, was because Pinkie had a huge mess to clean, Sugar Cube Corner was a business and needed to get back on it's feet, and she was more interested in stories.
Or she just wanted to use her apparatus to make some moonshine in secrecy ;)
I didn't even notice those things you pointed out before - Granny & Grandpear at the pear stand, Apple Bloom talking to Burnt Oak, and Sugar Belle walking with Big Macbon the farm! You've got an amazingly sharp eye! Definitely made watching this with you so much more enjoyable. I do think if anything, Sugar Belle would move to Sweet Apple Acres, as there's better business for her there than the Town with no name and one street, and more opportunities. I would love to see her intreractions with Granny Smith. Could be a nice sweet moment.
You always give great clear explanations of your thoughts and concepts. It's part of what's so great about watching and listening to your commentary at the end of your reaction. So, I don't think you have to worry about that. You never sound horrible in your analysis and explanations.
I loved seeing Zecora again. I'm really hoping they will delve into her story and her homeland and why she left. I just know she has an amazing story. And I'm glad you touched on Pinkie not noticing Rarity's new look at the end. If it's the case as you said with her not noticing physical appearances, that would be nice insight into the way she views things. It could have just been obliviousness, but I'll choose to agree with your theory.

I kind of have a theory as to why it might be hard to affect manes with magic. It is probably a long shot though. I just wonder if one's mane and tail are connected to their inner magic somehow. We see it most extremely in Pinkie, but I feel like there are plenty of cases of ponies' manes and tails becoming frazzled or unkempt when they're emotionally strained or drained, not just physically. And we also know that at least in some cases magic can be tied to emotion, hence how emotion could affect hair. And if that's the case it could make this make some sense because multiple magics interacting can get tricky.
Again, major long shot though. XP

This Rarity episode was fun, another great pony breakdown episode. There was plenty of crazy shenanigans(which gave me a lot of laughs) and character cameos(which is also cool). It's great to see Zecora again, she's been in the dark for a while(ever since the S5 finale along with a few cameos in S6). Now, Rarity as a punk pony was amazing, probably the highlight of this episode. On a side note, seeing Diamond Tiara for a brief moment was nice but, I'm still waiting for her(and Silver Spoon) to get more development/their own episode(whichever sounds better). They've been in the background for way too long. Very nice reaction by the way.

my theory is that like a cutiemark, a mane is connected to ones core magic. Doing magical damage to a magical object can be very tricky to fix without altering the original magical item. Which also explains why even an alicorn can't help a mane and why that other mane shattered when it was seperated from its core magic.

I really hope the next few episodes take place in between when Rarity lost her mane and when it grew back. I just want another chance to see "Punkity" in the show again, whether it be a background cameo or a full-blown feature.

I like your take on that minor Pinkie trait detail from this episode, though I think it can also be her serious weakness. What you said about the whole comparison between Rarity and a chemo patient and her trying to make the most of the change she underwent, it made me think of some of the cool things people have made for those who have disabilities. I know there's ones I'm forgetting but what comes to mind are the awesome "wheelchair costumes", as the name implies a costume that incorporates a wheelchair into its design (like say dressing as a fireman with the chair looking like a fire truck). I just thought of that on the topic of trying a new look after an event like this even though it's not quite the same.
The way Rarity acted in this episode reminds me of a friend of mine, he had a massive lack of foresight (he's not the brightest guy I know) for a couple years and totally screwed up his teeth, apparently they all need to be taken out. He's super down about it and talks about hating himself, constantly, I just hope one day he can pull himself out of it and get better.

Overall I liked this Ep, however I do not, nor will I ever believe that these ponies wouldn't know Rarity just because she had an hood on. Her face, in its' entire form, was not hidden. I suppose it was more towards Rarity had lost the energy to her voice and spoke so softly she didn't sound like herself.
But seriously that sofa stallion, F him and I hope he lose his building as seriuosly if that was Rainbow Dash's sofa........yeah, he be dead. X3 Plus that had nothing to do with Rarity's soften voice or hood, that guy was just greedy. I mean, for real would never help him again if he doesn't make amens by getting her another yellow one and does keep it for her.
The Grand Pear and Burnt Oak refs were nice. ^^ And I see Sugar Belle can travel to Ponyville. How far is Starlight's village exa-oh Celestia they showed Granny Smith milking an cow....that can speak and express emotions like the ponies.........um....yeah that was an bad call. ^^;
P.S, mane magic is the most tricky? I simply refuse to accept that. It is just hair, I'm sure Discord could've fixed it without any problems----altho he just might had made it green, tho..plus what would Spike had said? And I'm sure we'll see an Zecora focused Ep. I was surprised when Applegeek said we finally get to see Zecora again. I have seen every episode of MLP FiM, and I never realised that Zecora had been left out of the show for a while before Season 7.
I like all the secondary characters we see in this episode. However, the story isn't one of the season's strongest in my opinion. Anyway, here are my highlights:

Overall, this episode was okay, but I personally didn't think it was one of Rarity's best; the beginning made her seem vain, the middle part just tortures her and I didn't catch on to the ending moral - until it was described to me. So this unfortunately failed to hit a home run for me. But given how many great episodes MLP has had this season there were bound to be one or two duds. Let's just hope they've got something big planned to for the finale.

I always had this idea is to have a Starlight /Diamond Tiara episode where Starlight becomes a knd of big sister to Diamond Tiara.

I just think that with a mother like Spoiled Rich, she could use a older female role model she could relate to. In the end, both just really wanted real friends. Maybe throw in Silver Spoon. Plus it would give another reason to see her interacting with the CMC more.
Make it a CMC/Starlight episode. DT is envious of the connection the CMC have to their older sisters. So enlists their help in finding one for herself. After several attempts with other ponies like Pinkie and Derpy, they find the perfect choice with Starlight. It would give DT a reason to appear in future episodes and continue Starlight's apparent quest to befriend all former antagonists.
They really dropped the ball when it came to DT.
Starlight could really benefit from this as well. You could tie Starlight's backstory with her. Maybe Starlight never had anyone growing up (I go with the theory that Starlight was an orphan.) Or maybe her own parents neglected her. Which would also expand on why she turned to the darkside. She literally had no one to comfort her after Sunburst left and tell her everything would be OK. Her reasons for turning wouldn't be considered weak anymore.
There is actually a nice fanmade little comic where little Starlight is crying after Sunburst left. She says she will never see him again and wonders where her cutie mark is. Then she says maybe I'm just not special.
It was just so heartbreaking. I think it was called 'The Ghosts of the Past will Haunt you forever.'. It makes you realize that maybe if someone was there for her maybe things could have turned out happier. That she was never a monster. Just a lost little pony that Twilight finally brought home.
And I say to people who say she had a weak reason for turning. Imagine being that young with absolutely no one and only seeing a bleak future. How far do you think you would go to never have that happen again?
And then having it all taken away again by Twilight. To be alone again. By that point, I wouldn't blame Starlight for not thinking straight. Except then she finally had a target to focus on. Twilight. But Twilight is able to pull her back from her despair. To finally make it so Starlight is never alone again.
Or maybe I think too much into this.
Still a slight tweak in her backstory could do a world of wonders. Maybe with an expanded understandable background, people would be OK with the quick redemption.
Mind if I write that idea down? I've been generating a few ideas for potential fan fiction.

Sorry to disappoint on the embarrassing moment. It was rather embarrassing for me in the moment. Looking back though, it's definitely chuckle-worthy, but not nearly as epic as some other reactions.
This was a lot better than i expected and my second favorite Rarity ep.
So sad to see people from some websites saying that they will skip watching this episode because it has Rarity as the focus.

How has it only been ONE year since the Cake Twins' first sneeze? Unless they were like 3 years old the first time they sneezed. Even just going by the passage of time shown in the show, they have definitely been alive for *at least* 3 or 4 year's already. Even in this episode alone, several months pass, so time is definitely passing in the show. Even Flurry Heart would be like 2 by now, so the Cakes should definitely be older.

It's a nice idea that Pinkie wouldn't care so much about outward appearances. But she seemed kind of oblivious through most of the episode. Silver Quill has talked about how Pinkie is less funny when acting oblivious, and more funny when offering her own take on reality. This one seems more like the former. It's ironic, considering how she was the voice of reason in the previous episode. I think KP was right when she said the staff has several different writers working on different episodes at the same time, and there isn't always communication. I wish they'd pin down concepts like Pinkie's eccentricity more.
