Love Jack’s sense of humor. Enjoy these videos for the entertainment as much as the education he provides on so many different topics. One thing I think is funny. Jack gets annoyed by a nato strap that’s a little too long, but wears that Rolex with about 3 links too many. Darn near swivels around his wrist and slides up his arm. Keep up the good work Jack!
Another point on NATO straps regarding sizing: perlon straps - which are extremely adaptable - often come with a kind of 'ladder' buckle that helps with sizing. I think they would serve well in NATO straps for a perfect fit.
Jack you said it all. It is unbelievable that people do not see that the NATO straps are exactly as you described. They should be custom made or sold in different sizes. I found in Amazon NATO straps by Barton and this was the only company that I found producing Natos in two sizes at a very decent prices. Still not perfect for my 7.5 inch /19mm wrist but their NATO straps were the only ones that got the job done. At least for me. Love watching your videos. U da best!
Jack you've got to try Haveston NATO's, they've reengineered the layout to fit A LOT better by shortening them and swapping the 'traditional' sliding keeper location
I totally agree with you about NATO straps. I like the concept, but in practice, I don't care for them on my wrist. It is interesting though, that the FXD that you recommended, is a watch made for NATO straps.
Yep, it's really easy to trim a nato. All you do is use 2 nickels as your guide. Pinch or clamp the strap between the two stacked nickels and use a new razor blade to cut cleanly and without slippage. Then you can use a lighter while it's still together and seal the edges cleanly.
Most relatively modern mechanical tool watches have some evolution or proprietary derivative of the incabloc Jack describes in the video, and hold up to relatively small shocks like gunfire quite well. What's probably more concerning is their comparatively poor antimagnetism. More and more electronics are being fielded at every level, including devices that produce quite severe magnetic fields.
NATO straps are cool, generally inexpensive and comfortable, but the "dangling" part can be really annoying for me. I generally cut mine into Zulu straps. Regarding the sweep quartz seconds hands, i have the slightly related opinion that more watches should completely get rid of the "tick-tack" hand, specially if it's on the more dressier side of styles. I think that Constantin has some quartz without seconds hands.
Another comment below had a good point - the Frederique Constant Monolithic Manufacture at 40Hz (from Jack's article in April last year) - smooth seconds hand mechanical watch, and it's under 5K 😁👍
Seems to me that buying a watch for a known watch enthusiast, without any other background information about what they like, and what they own, is just asking for failure. Sure, as with ANY gift, it's a nice gesture. But your chances of actually pleasing the recipient seems quite low.
Is it definitive that the strap in James Bond Dr. No is a nato? I thought the nato wasn’t invested until the 1970s. Bond’s strap appears to be a Royal Air Force strap that is only a single piece and doesn’t have the two metal loops.
Actually, I should clarify. In Dr No he wears the Rolex on a dark brown alligator strap. But in GF and Thunderball he wears it on an undersized RAF strap
Dude kinda lost me with his take on the Nato strap. I'm now questioning his judgment. With his gold bracelet and black puffer vest, I guess it makes sense (for me) that he's not into Nato straps. Most of my watches have Nato straps, and I don't own a single puffer vest, moreover, I never will own one.
Jack was the one who wrote the article on the 40Hz Monolithic manufactur for Hodinkee in April of last year 😂 This also answered another question from this video - it's a good one for under 5K
@@gqwarren agreed. I’ve never seen one in person, but I think it would be great recommendation for a gift for the boss that is a “serious” collector. At $5k, it would deliver something he doesn’t have in his collection, and a piece that would probably have a place amongst much more expensive watches. 👍
Dude is wearing an Apple watch. This guy has already _checked out_ of the watch game. Why is he even trying to _'make clever'_ with remarks about _moments of inertia_ and friction being "the enemy of harmonic oscillation"? Srly? NSS.

My favorite episode ever. Jack is so smooth with his words.
A sweeping second hand is very fascinating.
But a ticking quartz second hand which hits every mark perfectly is equally satisfying.
The ending to this hits differently after today’s news…
Excellent suggestions ,Jack (Grand Seiko & Tudor). May I suggest Nomos be added to the list for that price range.

A really enjoyable video and it was nice to hear someone being positive about Grand Seiko and Tudor for a change.
Casio F-91W would be the perfect gift for the boss.
my boss who is extremely successful wears an F-91W...

Jack at Watchbox now! The dream team with Tim Mosso, this is going to be amazing. Best of luck to Hodinkee.
Whenever someone asks Jack, "What watch should I buy......."
The answer pretty much always starts with the word 'Grand', and ends with word 'Seiko'. 🤣
Grand Seiko is obviously paying Hodinkee for talking up their watches.

hodinkee being the greatest. BUT WHERE IS WATCHES IN THE WILD
With all the watches in the military, how is it that shooting guns doesn’t just instantly destroy movements?
They wear quartz G Shocks. Mechanical watches haven't been in the working military for decades except for Remington Raiders (desk jockeys).
I work in a woodshop and wear a mechanical watch and it seems fine despite all the vibrations
@@billybenson3834 Any quartz will work though G-shock is cheap and reliable. CWC and Marathon also make terrific milspec quartz watches.

The sweep in quartz depends entirely on the motor. There are fully sweeping quartz clocks for instance that work with a continuous moving motor
I have two seiko clocks with that system, very satisfying!
Great video! Jack Forster is absolutely brilliant!

Jlc and nomos are good value too, the jlc Master ultra thin is stunning and it's under 5,000 by a bit
Is this the last Hey Hodinkee with Jack… 😕
That woodpecker is amazing! I want one! 👍
I love Jack’s gilet. Rolex branded and all!
Who spends $5K on a parting gift for their boss?!? WTF!!!
Probably someone that worked for that boss, progressed under that boss, and sees their boss as someone who helped them achieved success.
@@artsohc Yeah, sure ... whatever.
Love The Grand Seiko Infomercial.
I love natostraps. Most comfortable for me. With both my seiko 5 and Vostok. I wear them night and day. Never sweaty.
We need more of this series

Jack: i never found a Nato strap that i‘m comfortable with. Also Jack: the Tudor FXD is very comfortable to wear! 😜
Yup and Jack probably did this deliberately. Auto-trolling is a thing.
Did you know the Fxd doesn’t come on a nato ?😅
God I love to hear this man speak
Seems to me that buying a watch for a known watch enthusiast, without any other background information about what they like, and what they own, is just asking for failure. Sure, as with ANY gift, it's a nice gesture. But your chances of actually pleasing the recipient seems quite low.
True I can confirm this as an enthusiast who received a watch 😅
Correct me if I'm wrong, but would the original Accutron movement count as a sweeping non-mechanical movement?
Sincere thanks for getting rid of the advertising segment in the beginning of the episode.
I’ve found that the Hamilton NATO straps are a perfect fit for me. Not too long, no over-hang that needs to be tucked under.
How about the railroad clocks? They seem at least to tick smoothly.

Bond's strap is a Zulu, not nato
You’re right, its an RAF strap.
Actually, I should clarify. In Dr No he wears the Rolex on a dark brown alligator strap. But in GF and Thunderball he wears it on an undersized RAF strap
Why are you wearing a vest in the summer?.
I wish we could get more episodes of this. So sad that he left Hodinkee 😢
wait he left hodinkee?
Yep. It looks like they hired him at a different company. He was the main reason I watched Hodinkee.
Jack is obviously nuts…. He’s the only one who makes sense to me!
So what watch is Jack wearing today?
Original accutron has a full sweep
The 2020 Spaceview and DNA also have a smooth sweep as well!
I feel sales of HODINKEE nato straps dropping now… Thanks a lot Jack! Oh Ben on line one would like to talk to you. (JK)
Great video
I called Hodinkee today to buy a $7K watch and they hung up on me because I would not leave a message and wait for a "remote" person to call me back.
Can't go wrong with Dornbluth and Sohn
I have an 8.25" wrist, NATO straps for me perfectly
I wonder if the Omega Marine Chronometer from the 1970’s had a smooth second hand? Anyone know?
That mistake about the James Bond movies is making me twitch.
Love it.
nice jack
Nice gold watch on his wrist
I would say Grand Seiko >>> Tudor.
Tudor is a sub-brand of Rolex.
Dude kinda lost me with his take on the Nato strap. I'm now questioning his judgment.

Frédérique Constant actually invented a 100% mechanical movement that is as smooth as spring drive.

Tudor??? Such dull dials, uninspired cases. I’m sure well made, but blah boring.
no judging taste I guess - I for one find Tudor watches to be immensely appealing
Sorry I can’t get past the Seiko name in a Grand Seiko. Tudor is for Rolex wannabes who can’t afford one.
