Thanks for this video Matsimus. Brings back the memories. I remember dozens of these parked around Warsaw during the martial law in 1981/82. Some were just sitting in mud and snow for weeks as there was a shortage of fuel and wouldn't move when the army pulled out in the spring of 1982.
The "solidarity" movement , I think my dad visited during that time...1982 ,he lived there when it was a German state-Prussia, before, during the war..
It would be great to see you do a video on the Austrian Pandur II 6x6 and its variants. The Austrian 17th Jager Brigade runs them. Also, U.S. Special Operations use the autocannon version in Africa on occasion. It is my favorite IFV.
Now the wheeled APC market is so varied. We got the APC's with front wind shield (Griffon, lots of Streit Group offerings) and without wind shield (Eitan, Guarani). We got amphibious (Iveco SuperAV is a favorite) and non-amphibious (VBCI1). We got the 6x6 (Tatra Heron, Patria XA-300, Fuchs, VAB etc.) and 8x8 (FNSS Pars Alpha, Stryker, Boxer, Terrex, Pandur etc.), especially in the wind shield category also many 4x4 variants (TAG Terrier is one of my favorites, but also Mowag Eagle, RMVV Survivor 2, Bushmaster, Dingo 2, etc.). It seems easier, economically affordable for countries to develop a wheeled armored vehicle compared to a track type vehicle. That's why so many countries around the world are producing those. Sometimes the difference between MRAP and APC is a grey area.
Matt, I've been watching your channel since 2017. I will always stop by to hang out and watch one of your videos to learn about vehicles or weapon systems, thank you for making this content for us! Love from the US
Interesting video, but my 2 favorite 8x8 Vehicles are the actual "Boxer" (for Protection and Modularity) and the former "Luchs" reconnaissance vehicle only designed for its specific needs.
Thank you for covering this. Definitely one of the more underappreciated non-soviet vehicles of the warsaw pact. I always appreciate content like this!
Started to appreciate this vehicle after watching it in 2008 film Babylon A.D. where the character Gorsky modded it into some sorta armored limousine with screens mounted on the interior wall showing outside via thermal/ir camera view.
Used by Czechoslovak soldiers during the War in Yugoslavia, including the Evacuation of Karin Base where our soldiers, led by our current president Petr Pavel saved French solders under siege by Croats and Serbs.
Hi Matt - just to increase your engagement you might want to add to your analysis of vehicles their representation in video games. Certainly a lot of us will only experience this vehicle through the lens of a video game. This particular vehicle seems to be skipped over by most game makers, and it's not because it's obscure (thousands were made) but simply because it don't offer any distinct capabilities in video games - just a machine gun and some versions with a cannon and single ATGM. Feel free to be controversial and definitive in your perspective, really helps with the engagements if someone reposts it to a forum.
I am surprised how many videos you have produced recently. I like the concept of a large, light, bulletproof, wheeled amphibious transport, especially if relatively cheap, for civilian Mad Max reasons. Can be turned into an armored trailer. Bathroom, kitchen, bunk, tools and a drone, home sweet home. Militarily i think, utility of armored vehicles, in peer conflicts will be primarily as bunkers on wheels for drone operators. Elusiveness, awareness, flexibility and economics would be prioritized over direct combat performance.
BTW all wheeld APCs and even tracked vehicles have problems to climb step river banks after crossing water obstacles. Thats why socouts and enginer recognition exist in militaries. they search places fitet for crossing operation.
it is Czechoslovakian- Polish design . Czecoslovakia gave engine, suspension and drive train. Poland designed and produced armored body, turrets and both machine guns. Whole vehicle was assembled in Poland. there was 2 versions of turrets. second one was full Polish design and had capibilities of anti aircraft fire. it was called SKOT 2AP. Very weak research to make this material.
That is incorrect. Poland join project in April 1962 and armoured body design were completed in 1961. Also Czechoslovak version was using Soviet turret produced under licence in Poland. Machine guns was chosen Soviet ( produced under licence in Poland ) because Polish army didn't use Czechoslovak MG however Czechoslovak army was using Soviet and indigenous MG simultaneously. Poland designed turret for Polish version. Vehicles was simultaneously produced In Czechoslovak Avia v Letnanech and in Polish FCS Lublin. Poland were suppling turrets with machine guns and hulls ( armoured bodies ) and Czechoslovakia everything else. However many hulls was suffering from cracks due to not following standard welding processes and poor quality of materials.
My favourite APC without thinking or doubt is the BTR-80A/82A and than the GTK Boxer on the second place and than the TPz Fuch and the XA-181 shares the bronze medal.
A very practical A.P.C. Of course, as an armored-box 8x8, I saw it and thought, "Who put a KPV on an L.A.V.?" One does wonder why no one seems to have thought of just making these hulls water-tight, and putting one or more mounts for outboard marine motors on the back, run by someone in the infantry compartment. Slap a couple of Mercury 150's on this bad boy and rig a removable "clipper prow" frame to the front for better hydrodynamics, and I bet this thing wouldn't suck crossing a lake!
In here they only need to cross a river. And tbh, they would avoid doing that as well if possible. No need to bring a separate motor and definitely no need to block rear door with it.
@deffington6627 You obviously lack situational awareness and adaptive thinking! What hardware *_can't_* do, *has to be done **_some other way!_* The problem doesn't cease to exist because you want to ignore it!
@ Yeah, obviously. Fortunately the comrades of USSR and CSSR thought about it and introduced PTS amphibious transport. And while OT SKOT can swim a little, it's easier to load them on PTS than making any field mods for longer swimming trips.
I remember it being good only as hiding spot where you could sleep till another shift takes the carpark duty. None of them ever moved and there were like full garages of those things. Looks kinda cool but its tall and i wouldnt trust it to swim, i seen those rustbuckets personaly. Decent chassis from what the oldtimers said but if you slap bunch of armor and stuff on basicaly Tatra engine and chassis, it will do but it wont be drag racer if you catch my drift. Maybe good for its time (and thats questionabele) but otherwise mainly nostalgia for those ČSLA (Czechoslovak Army)/Warsaw Pact dudes and enthusiasts.
About 20 or so years back one could buy those in Poland from army surplus - in decent condition - for about $2000. I was VERY tempted to buy one. Now... forget it - the prices have gone up orders of magnitude.
A little correction: in 12:31 you say that the OT-64 with the remote-controlled Cobra turret is a czech modernisation. This was actually a slovak modernisation with 2A42 Cobra turret from ZŤS Špeciál and is also not remotely operated, it’s a one-man turret. Otherwise a great video!
There's so many different types of wheeled armored vehicles I think of all the countries out of all of them South Africa and the other African countries make some crazy designs
@zepter00 That is incorrect. Poland join project in April 1962 and armoured body design were completed in 1961. Also Czechoslovak version was using Soviet turret produced under licence in Poland. Can’t say I’ve got hands on experience of it but at least in Wargame: RD the French VAB is a good little APC. The Stryker though takes the gold star for its ambulance variant being set up to actually provide care, to the wounded not just a meat wagon.
I don't really have a favorite wheeled APC, I suppose I'd go with the Stryker for Team America reasons (yeah yeah, it's a modified Canadian LAV III, but it appears Canada will be joining the Team soon so that's moot😜). I have always liked the look of the OT-64 though. I hesitate to admit this, but I consider it a cute APC looking like an abstract bassett hound from the front with long floppy ears and sunk eyes. It also gives me Star Wars vibes. Slap some little legs on it instead of wheels and I could see stormtroopers rolling, well walking, around on it. Oh, then it would look even more like a basset hound, or some other kind of cute little animal.
Sorry to hear the channel is struggling. Obviously we know it's not your fault as the content you make is still high quality and enjoyable. UA-cam is just like that sometimes. Hope it gets better! Also, you said you were an LAV fan, which would you choose between LAV-6 and LAV-25? (i'm an 0313 so you better choose correctly)
My teacher used to tell us, when he was in the army, that every skot had three lines in it: if water reached the first one - all was well; the second - ok, but be careful; the third - get the f* out!
Looks like just a "newer" BTR. But when they are set up already to make a thing, just altering the design they already can make, seems the cheaper and easier option.

There is also another communist Wheeled APC from China known as WZ-551 / ZSL-92 6X6 Wheeled APC , which was made from the previous WZ 523 APC , That resembles very much closely to , & in fact inspired from French 6X6 Renault VAB Indonesia also made PT PINDAD ANOA 6X6 APC based on VAB Also Yugoslavia has a domestic 4X4 APC called the BOV There are also some other 6X6 APCs like Brazilian EE-11 Urutu , which is based on & shares most of it's component with the EE-9 Infantry support vehicle as well as 8X8 Platforms like the Chinese Type-08 APC & Russian VPK-7829 Bumerang APC Also India has made the 8X8 Tata Kestrel APC , which has been successfully inducted by our CRPF units , but Army is in favor of importing Stryker , even after Canada ban sales of Stryker components to India following recent India-Canada diplomatic scuffles

Of course, as an armored-box 8x8, I saw it and thought, "Who put a KPV on an L.A.V.?"
One does wonder why no one seems to have thought of just making these hulls water-tight, and putting one or more mounts for outboard marine motors on the back, run by someone in the infantry compartment.
I hadn’t heard of this before, and I thought I knew most of them 🙂👍
Probably my favorite cold war APC, its so cool looking! You can also buy an unarmed one on Mortar for like 12,000 euros btw
Great SKOT!
Idk about itsperformance but it looks sick
idk why but to me this looks kinda futuristic, the front shape looks very advanced for 60s
My favorite cold war Warsaw Pact APC.
Awesome video. I was a cold war Soldier and don't ever remember this vehicle. Maybe the 2ACR guys who faced the Czechs.
Churning out the videos mate nice. 🍻
More to come!
It does look cool and i wish my truck had that much protection for my gas tank lol
Just a trivia point: The Mad Max Fury Road truck shares the same genealogy (Tatra Company) as this one. Good machines, in deed, good machines...
Very cool
About 20 or so years back one could buy those in Poland from army surplus - in decent condition - for about $2000. I was VERY tempted to buy one. Now... forget it - the prices have gone up orders of magnitude.
A little correction: in 12:31 you say that the OT-64 with the remote-controlled Cobra turret is a czech modernisation. This was actually a slovak modernisation with 2A42 Cobra turret from ZŤS Špeciál and is also not remotely operated, it’s a one-man turret. Otherwise a great video!
i really like the Alvis Saracen, no idea why exactly but it's cool
There's so many different types of wheeled armored vehicles I think of all the countries out of all of them South Africa and the other African countries make some crazy designs
More of this please :)
Another day, Another video. ❤
Hope you enjoyed it!
This is my favorite APC from antiquity.
I’ve always had an interest in the SKOT just because you can get one for around $25k.
Of course tariffs and shipping are another story.
Seems like a nice design.
Those would do a good job even in the current conflicts
how have i never heard of this, 4000! units
MBOMBE M 4 And Patria 6x6 are my favourites.
I dont know why i love the Vilkas APC
@zepter00 That is incorrect. Poland join project in April 1962 and armoured body design were completed in 1961. Also Czechoslovak version was using Soviet turret produced under licence in Poland.
What is the exact protection level of this tin can? It seems to be exceedingly thin.
I don't exactly know this vehicle but cool
It used to have realy funny nickname in Polish Army
S-Samobieżna
K-Kołowa
O-Opancerzona
T-Trumna
Or in English Self-propelled wheeled armored coffin.
The US m1117 Guardian APC it's pretty cool looking don't know if we still use them or not I think my favorite new modern wheeled armored vehicle is the US Marines ACV
@@seanmiller8756 thank you! And 6 😜✌️
4:15 oh boy, the guy pumping out water and barely keeping it from sinking..
A better design than the BTR Honestly.
Hey Mat, take easy. You are dropping bombs almost everyday. Let me digest the previous videos. You are doing a great job.
Its a shame that the soviets pushed the BTR family on the Warsaw Pact countries insteod of the SKOT, its inferior in most capabilites to the SKOT.
For the empire!
Poland have a lot of rivers. They still see amphibiousnes as very important.
Stryker GMC!
😆😸😸
I'm always surprised how modern the vehicle looks
It’s got a BDRM II turret
Czech Proto-Stryker.
Nice.
Favourite wheeled APC?
Lazar-3
Battle bus my beloved
My teacher used to tell us, when he was in the army, that every skot had three lines in it: if water reached the first one - all was well; the second - ok, but be careful; the third - get the f* out!
Looks like just a "newer" BTR.
But when they are set up already to make a thing, just altering the design they already can make, seems the cheaper and easier option.
Cool I like this vehicle 🤷
In Polish it approximetly sound something like: She-red-Knee Kowovy Ko(like in Congo)wo(like in wow)vy(like in russian unit name Vympiel) Trans-Port-Er(like in error) o-pantze(like Panzer, but with tze sound)-zho-ny. She with such short e at the end so you have only SH but softer like in she or xi.
"Mom can we have PaSi?"
"No, we have PaSi at home"
PaSi at home:
There is also another communist Wheeled APC from China known as WZ-551 / ZSL-92 6X6 Wheeled APC , which was made from the previous WZ 523 APC , That resembles very much closely to , & in fact inspired from French 6X6 Renault VAB
Indonesia also made PT PINDAD ANOA 6X6 APC based on VAB
Also Yugoslavia has a domestic 4X4 APC called the BOV
There are also some other 6X6 APCs like Brazilian EE-11 Urutu , which is based on & shares most of it's component with the EE-9 Infantry support vehicle as well as 8X8 Platforms like the Chinese Type-08 APC & Russian VPK-7829 Bumerang APC
Also India has made the 8X8 Tata Kestrel APC , which has been successfully inducted by our CRPF units , but Army is in favor of importing Stryker , even after Canada ban sales of Stryker components to India following recent India-Canada diplomatic scuffles
