  • In this edition of review station I have the first review of 2021. I take a look at the all new Bachmann GWR 94xx 0-6-0 steam locomotive with DCC sound. This is a fantastic looking model with plenty of detail and tech. It's well worth the long wait!!

9466 is preserved in real life, the only member of the class to escape from the scrapyard. I'm just being honest here, I'm not all that keen on the 94xx Pannier Tank Engine. However, I can't criticise the wonderful sharp bark and shrill whistle that she has. Those sounds are a joy to listen to and will always grab my attention. Let's just say, apart from me not having this model myself, she is beginning to grow on me. Aside from that, I prefer the 57xx Pannier Tank Engine like 7754 on the Llangollen Railway. What's not to love about God's Wonderful Railway?

9400 still exist. It is in Steam which is Swindon’s GWR museum. You can take a virtual tour on their web site.

Very good Matt, that firebox glow is quite effective...

Been watching this locos progress for a while, but can't justify it. If coreless motors are going to be deployed they need to do so with a very large gear box reduction otherwise you get erratic running due to the coreless motor having little mass or torque. You are quite right that a nice 5 or ever 3 pole motor would have been far better.

I would definitely send it back just received mine and it runs perfectly.

Nice review Matt the fire box glow really adds a lot or realisim to a model and just the overall quality of the model is great.

For the price of these models now you should be receiving a perfectly running loco first time. There seems to be far to many arriving in poor running order.

The running quality reminds me of the recent Hornby Large Prairie that had a mind of it's own. I had two of these locos both sent back to the suppliers and received refunds .

That is a fine looking model Matt & should be after waiting over 5 years for Bachmann to get it produced. The firebox flicker is a nice touch too, but that running performance is not what I would expect for that RRP.

Nice one Matt. I think I will have to get one now. I love the 94xx and I load of coal wagons just dying to be hauled by it, so I guess it would be rude not to 🤷🏻‍♂️ Shame about the issues with slow speed running though. Surely a a lower ratio gear box would have helped this? 🤔 Nevertheless, my J72 runs lovely now it is properly run in so I should hope, this will follow suit 😎
    Cheers mate 👍🍀

Your very right why change what already works with 3 and 5 pole motors
I had to get all new controller for j72 and sdjr 1p cuz of coreless motors.
But the 94xx has a lot of detail
    Well made video
    Keep safe arp

Hi Matt. Have a play with the Bemf and repetition rate cv settings on the chip. Should be in the manual. Ive got the non sound version and am running a lenz silver+ but the coreless motor runs much better (especially at slow speed) when turning bemf on and upping the repetition rate.
I also had a wheel spacing issue with mine which led to a rod catching, but that was easily fixed.

Very detailed model although that speeding up and slowing down is an issue I would not be happy with. I recall someone else having to swap out the motor on another type of loco because of that problem.

Matthew what ever marks you give it still looks good, as with its jurk I suppose it's new. When you run it next with coaches or wagons it would be nice to hear more sounds and I like to mention that the fire glow make the locomotive so impressive tho you said the locomotive number and shed alocation but when you said the number 2nd & 3rd time around you did not tell us about the red disk with the letter C above 9479. Love the 94xx nice locomotive despite the motor maybe get it fitted with the pole motor it might run better or give it a train to pull like a main line test run with a rake of 10 Chocolate & Cream Mk1 coaches and with the Red Dragon headboard

Hi matt My version of the cambrian coast express is on hold as my Manor class locomotive has a axle problem and I was wondering if you would be doing a cambrian coast express running day

A truly nice looking locomotive just a shame about that motor. Have you got back emf enabled, I have read somewhere that coreless motors don’t like it. A bit like feed back DC controllers.

Is it only superlatives then ? A coreless motor... not my choice. And as you experienced. Slow speed is erratic as most Bachmann's. Shoebox sound. In conclusion 5/10 not worth the high price. You're to generous but I hope you can enjoy this a long time without issues.

Fantastic level of detail but typical British outline running quality!
