Thank you for showing that the anti-reflection doesn't completely eliminate reflections, as is sometimes portrayed by glasses companies.
It's impossible to completely eliminate reflections, regardless of what lense or AR coatings you get. With newer anti-reflective coatings, however, you don't just get an anti-reflection feature. You get scratch resistance, dirt resistance, dust resistance, UV protection, and the lenses appear invisible, so that people are able to see your eyes when speaking to you. With premium AR coatings, you get even more protection. Some people aren't bothered by glare, but people with an Astigmatism usually need an AR coating, since their eyes filter light differently. Some people just need glasses to read or just to see better, but AR coatings are recommended for people with astigmatism, people who drive, or people who are on the computer often. Which is a lot of people. However, reflections don't bother some people so that's why it's an option.
Hands-down, the best anti-reflective coating information video to make one make the right choice on all of UA-cam!
Hello everyone! I'm throwing in my 2 cents! ... On the face of it, anti-glare sounds (and looks) pretty danged good, ... however, I've worn glasses since I've been 3 yrs old, and for most of those years have been wearing a 1.67 high index lens. (high index lenses are much more prone to glare than polycarb). I had the anti-glare added to my glasses twice in the past.
The 1st time was in 2002, and more recently in 2014 (I thought I'd give it a shot, maybe they had improved). One big thing I don't like about the anti-glare coating is that they continually attract dirt and grime (seemingly from the air) onto the lenses. I NEVER had this problem with my non- anti-glare lenses. My non- anti-glare glasses got cleaned once in the morning, and they stayed clean ALL DAY LONG.
Another thing is, after a while, the coating starts to peel in small spots here and there. I tend to keep my glasses more than 2 years, and there is no amount of coddling the lenses to keep the peeling from happening. I clean them gingerly, never using a dry or dirty cloth, etc., and I ALWAYS set them down on the frame rims. Getting them re-coated really doesn't work all that well, either. If you search around on the internet, there are plenty of people commenting on blogs about the anti-glare coating peeling off. Apparently, I'm luckier than some of them who say their peeling problem happened within the 1st year!
Currently, I'm getting ready to buy another pair of eyeglasses. I have decided that I am not going to get the anti-glare (nope, just not gonna go there), and my decision is not based upon cost. Yes, the gentleman in this video shows that the uncoated lenses have much more glare. I can see that just as well as all of you, ... but guess what folks, ... in all the years I've worn glasses (with or without the coating), I've never really noticed much of any glare while I'm going about my day. This includes many years of working in an office with fluorescent lighting. Am I just dense? Do I just not notice things? No, I don't think so, ... my fellow co-workers have made similar observations about their eye-glass experiences, as well. If the truth be known, I am, in fact, very particular about my glasses, just as I am very particular about many other things in life.... and I DO like to see well!
It is not my intent to try and persuade anyone from getting glasses with anti-glare. I just wanted to share my experience, ... and show that, as in many aspects of living, not all is as it first appears. Use your own good judgement, for what works for me isn't necessarily going to work for you! ... Just call me 4 eyes! (*_*)
Great comment thank you. I find it odd that no one really talks about the peeling of the anti coating after 2 years. The peeling is what prompts me to go get a new set of glasses. I just ordered some yesterday with non antiglare coating. We will see how i like them
Please do not use a glass cleaner on your lenses. Most glass cleaners have ammonia in them and that will eat away at the hard coat on your lenses. Simple soap and water or diluted alcohol will work just as well and are better for your lenses if you don't want to get the glasses cleaners at the store. Also, use a microfiber wiping cloth or anything 100% cotton. Anything else will cause surface scratches on the lenses.
Dude thanks for the quick and short video on the comparison. Take my like
Great comparison thank you
It's been 9 months and still going strong for me. I think it matters a lot who does the coating.
thank you for the illustration it helps me a lot
Thank you! I was wondering if I should get it or not, now I decided I will.
Thank you. This was all i needed to make a decision.
awesome simple and straight to point love it!
+Jesus Rojas No higher compliment for someone trying to explain something.
had an eye test earlier, and now will get some with AR. thanks for that good friend.
Thank you so much. Decision made- - finally, after 2 months of not knowing which was better, or what added features were worth the price Short and sweet. No thought required.. I'm going to press the order now button right now. Yes! Thanks for one pf the most useful videos I've ever seen. :)
katalepsykills wow. glad I helped.
katalepsykills DON'T DO IT THEY ALWAYS FOG OVER!! HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS!!!
Thank you for a realistic comparison. Pictures don’t show it very well/are majorly doctored. This was good.
Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks,i had just a vague idea, think i got it now.
Excellent comparison and to the point video. Thanks Mr Hawkins.
Thanks so much! That answered my question quickly and plainly. Great Job!
Thanks! I've always wondered whether it was worth the extra money to get the coating, and now I see that it is. Good to know it's not just a money grab. :)
+Megan F Just be aware that you need to be careful with the coating. Do not expose it to heat, hairspray, high humidity including steam. It is better to get the kind that is baked on instead of sprayed. The sprayed is a gimmick that will wear down within a year making it hard to see.
Most companies will insure the glasses for a full year. After a year, the anti-glare coating of cheap companies will deteriorate and cause blurred vision. Most chain stores will not help you after a year and will ask you to buy another pair of lenses... it's bullcrap.
Yes, the anti-glare is useful, but it is also very annoying when it starts to wear off.
Personally, I will only get anti-glare from my opthalmologist, not some random optometrist at Target who has very little to do with selecting lenses (usually leave that to the college kids that are hired to fit you with a prescription)
Right now I have blurred vision in my right eye because the anti-glare is coming off... I'd rather have reflections than have blurred vision. The anti-glare doesn't come off all at once, either... it looks like patches of clouds and small scratches.
Luke Young thanks for the extensive details. I didn't know there was an option to bake on or spray on. I hope my optometrist isn't scamming me.
+Luke Young thank you! and thanks Kelly for the video and the discussion it's opened up!
Awesome comparison spot on! I just got my new glasses (old pair are 10 years old) and my new pair have the anti glare. This is a perfect video to show my friends who are lucky enough to have perfect vision.
thanks, kelly!
Please note this is anti-reflection coating, try and stay aware from calling it 'anti-glare' as it does not cut through light/glare like a polarised lens for instance (the main functions of which are uv protection, high definition clarity, and strong glare reduction e.g. wet road surfaces with strong reflecting sunlight). Anti- Reflective coating merely reduces light reflections on the surface of ophthalmic lenses to help improve the cosmetic appeal of the lens, and reduce unwanted annoying light for the wearer.
If I wore anti reflection glasses at night driving, will it reduce glare coming from the headlights?
@@kaustubhmarathe unfortunately not, although it is better to have an anti-reflection coating as oppose to a hard coated lens for night driving... but it sadly won't stop the force of headlights. For this there are certain products out there which you can use and some people find them useful. They're glasses that typically feature a strong yellow or citrus tint. Sometimes they are large enough to fit over your current eyewear, have a quick google.
@@stotty0191 are you using AR glasses?
@@stotty0191 i have polarized sunglasses also, Sometimes i use it in the evening when i drive because of it's lighter shade, i think it is fairly reduces glares upto 70% of the headlights.
Thanks this was helpful. I was wondering too if it's worth it.
OMG WALTER WHITE
Lol
Ikr
Thanks man, very helpful video
Thanks for posting this! Just got new glasses and I paid the extra for anti glare so this video makes me happy I did.
Thank you. One simple video demo explained everything.
great explanation. I had my first anti glare coating lens, very useful for using computer and night driving...but it easily scratch for no reason even though I very carefully protect it..can anti glare coating be replaced?
Glad I could help.
Short video and to the point! Thanks dude! 👍
Thanks! I've gotten a pair of glasses from a thrift store while looking for sunglasses. I couldn't believe my luck, the prescription is perfect, in perfect condition but no anti-glare coating, so off to do this today. your video showed the difference, which I wanted to see for myself if it was worth it! Definitely is!
thank you so much for this video. i really hate the green glare that AR coating has but you've made me reconsider it all.
So helpful, this video confirmed I will go add the coating to my glasses!
just got some new glasses forked out for anti glare.picking them up later. glad i got it now
I don't know yet i also got an ultra tough scratch restaurant coating put over the top.. i hope it does not scratch easy
nice...short video...but very effective...thanx...
So, how do you clean them? If you use the wrong cleaner - how do you get them back to their original condition?
I am using lenses with AR coating more than 3 years. They didn't wear off. Still working.
Did they help you with glare from the coming cars in your way to work?
Thank you for answering my question. Is there a certain way you clean your glasses? I used to have a pair of glasses with the anti-glare coating on it and I loved how much clearer it made things, especially at night. Eventually it wore off. Maybe it was the way I cleaned them. I'm wanting to get another pair.
but when looking out through the glasses, wouldn't your head block most of the light when you're wearing them and eliminate a lot of the glare?
I bought a new pair of glasses with the AR coating, but right at the corner of the lens, I see a blue light and my beard Hair. This happens at night when light is shining behind me. Is this normal?
Very helpful. Easy to understand.
I need this, how much did the treatment cost?
HID and aftermarket headlights are popular in my area and most of the time there's always that one person who doesn't know how to properly use their high beams. I upgraded my old Civic with halogen fogs instead of LEDs out of respect for other drivers and they were the only DOT legal set from the many aftermarket options I looked at.
It's all good until the coating decides to release from the lenses. I paid extra to have this coating added to my reading glasses and enjoyed it until one day I took them out of my purse in the sun and noticed that both lenses had problems. All around the frames, the coating was crackling off. I could understand this if it were happening in the center of each lens from wiping or drying when washed, but this was all around the frames where it doesn't get rubbed. Eventually this will be an irritation in my line of sight and the glasses will be unwearable. I have other over the counter magnifying glasses that don't have any coating and I never notice a problem with glare when reading or working on the computer which proved to me that I don't need this coating. I will never have this put on glasses in the future--pay extra and end up regretting it.
Only had them a little while, but they are fine so far. Keep me up to date ou your experience.
cant wait orderd mine for next tuesday!
Whats the difference between a coating that has green or purple glare? Which is better?
I have a similar problem. I use coffee filters and simple glass cleaner. Coffee filters are poor man's lint free cloth. There is another coating that resists fingerprints. That is an additional charge. I didn't get it this time.
Not on any of my glasses, but some people say it does. I think it depends on who does the coating.
Thank you!
I only use my glasses for reading. I didn't see the purpose of the anti-glare or anti-reflection coating that is offered. I understand that when people look at me they likely see more reflections. As for the backside, since I work on dark screens most of the time, I already reduce the light behind me so I don't notice reflections on my screen and thus also reducing the reflections on the back (eye) side of the glasses.
Very useful video. Thank you.
Good video, cheers! Helpful.
Good comparison.. Thank you.
does the anti glare coating make it easier to drive at night with all these new super bright headlights that practically blind you ??
Thank you for the video! I’m happy I’ve decided to get the anti glare lenses. 😁
I’m just waiting on them to call me when they’re ready.
The biggest problem with anti glare is down the road. The ware and tare actually make it harder to see especially at night because they can scratch so easy. I have had them for 2 years now and they can only be used during daylight hours. If you can afford to buy them every 18 months then go for it. Places like Walmart will not strip and replace them.
+bobo bob Truth. Beware any chain stores. I have nothing against what this UA-cam video says, it is great, until it starts to come off. If you have some cheap lenses, they just use some cheap spray on tactic that didn't even last me a full year.
+Luke Young , I agree and this was my first pair. I will not be going to places like Walmart again. I just can not afford those that cost so much more at that time. Do you know of any nationwide company that you would recommend? Thanks in advance.
I do not recommend chain stores. My ophthalmologist also commented on how they get their savings by these cheap products. I recommend first, see an ophthalmologist, not optician. I now only go to the local private practices. I have heard that at least some of the higher end lenses are carried at some chain stores, but it's a gamble.
great useful video!
I know they put it on binoculars and GPS screens. It must work on watches as well.
I think you're mistaken. It's ANTI REFLECTION coating. It's wrong to call it anti GLARE!
There is a difference between the two.
Glasses have an MAR coating known as multi anti reflection coating.
It eliminates REFLECTIONS from the lens surface which makes the glasses cosmetically better.
If a car headlamp on full beam dazzles you with the glare then these glasses will do nothing for that. They just eliminate REFLECTIONS from the lens surface
wow thanks for doing this! I was worried cause my glasses that I got with anti-reflective coating still had some reflection. I thought I got ripped off. It seems that there will always be SOME reflection though
You're*
Didn't*
Run on sentence.
Another run on sentence.
with anti-glare for me, when i'm on the phone or computer, the screen will actually reflect back into my vision at the top, sides and bottom of the lense, but mainly the top. so I had to choose either living with glare or living with seeing my screen twice... I chose glare
Wow thanks man Wal-Mart recommended anti glare computer glasses. I'm not getting it now.
Can this be done on PLASTIC LENSES????? or only on glass
Thanks fam
Like the video bro, informative. Love my lens with AR coating
You know, I think they do bdecause there are cars and all kinds of lights all around me as I walk and the glare reduction prevents those blobs of light from looking like another phantom car.
strade to the point, thanks
Does it work as well on watches?
can someone please tell me how to remove those red reflectionions
Sir thank you very much very much appreciate
I am going to order glasses for myself tomorrow Definitely with
A.R. Coating.
Does the anti-glare coating wear off over time?
is anti glare the same as anti reflect?
Despite this, I always choose to not get the coating because after a little while some of the anti-glare coating starts easily flaking off and scratching and makes the glasses unusable.
Thanks for the explanation it helps.
How's night driving?
very helpful
I have had really good luck with the anti glare coating not warring off apparently. I do replace my glasses in a year and ware contacts some of the time. I get my glasses very cheap at zennyoptical (not sponsored). Other online glasses places are available. I use coffee filters to clean my glasses. They are great lint free cloths.
anti glare is expensive, but it's worth it..wish I would have watched your video first.
for me personally, I don't like how every time I get my picture taken, or see myself in the mirror all i see is two huge glares where my eyes should be.
also, I've worn anti glare lenses for the past two years, just got the non anti glare. When wearing them, there really isn't much of a difference. I mean there is, an there's less glare from the sides. it's really not bad. it's minor considering how muc more they glare from someone elses point of view
Thanks :)
I understand the purpose. It’s good for driving and what hot, but I really hate the tint on it.
Nice to have until the coating starts to peel off. For me it already happened three times and each time i spent around 800€ for a new pair of Zeiss lenses. No they can cannot fix it and no you have to buy the lenses with the coating you cannot buy them without coating, so i was told each time. Around 2 years of use until the coating starts to peel off.
Actually - just as a point of reference- the coatings main objective believe it or not - is to Not just reduce reflections off the back of the lens into the eye - however it actually addresses yes the glare issues we find many times while under fluorescent light , computers, and one of the main ones is Nite time driving glare.
2- the more important benefit to AR lens is the ability of it to INCREASE light transmission thru the lens material itself... This making it so the light goes thru the lens and thus not causing the reflections .
Many - esp the newer lens materials reduce the light transmission and the optics are not as good- however with AR it corrects that.
One should mainly today- ensure to not cheap out and get the “basic” dated old coatings - you want a new generation of coatings that have hydrophobic and oiliophobic layers along with a lens or coating that reduces Blue light which causes many issues itself - ie sleep - ect........
Also- a word of advice - look for optics and clarity when choosing a lens material ! Stay AWAY from Polycarbonate at all costs and if your dealing with a young child or safety issue pick Trivex !
Lastly- Gotta live when i see cheap parents say their kids do not NEED these options on their glasses - ie - blue light and non glare
Besides the cosmetic benifits - your kids need it more then you i would say. Parents still think its for “only nite time driving” when in fact its not! Also they are on computer devices just as much as us, white boards and bad lighting at school and if anything else - without it- their school photos look horrible when parents cheap out.
Educate yourself on products and options and look at it as a healthcare cost NoT a fashion thing.!
You will be surprised if you choose to go online without using a professional- cuz Maybe you can sorta see or at least adapt however people are so interested in obtaining your PD measurements for free - becuz you THINK it important to have that correct- (thats only the horizontal measurement between your eyes so you do not cause something named prism in glasses - HOwEVER this goes to show those of you that think its a great buy and deal to not shop your local optical .
Why do you feel is so important for us to measure YOUR PD (many times u expect it to be done for free )
And then want to return and have them trouble shooted if you can not see - as well as get them adjusted and repaired ...,. Its because you cant go back to that Basement lab - usually in China to have them do it so you just want others to .
As for that PD measurement- if you actually think about it- since you are so bent on ensuring your PD is correct- (horizontal measurement)
Why dont you Get that the Vertical Measurement is JUST as important?
Because it actually is - but these online places don’t care since you can only take that measurement when you are Wearing that particular frame and thats not gonna happen...... So in the end - you should just NOT care and make all the numbers up.
The point of a PD measurement AND OC (Optical Center ) measurement is to ENSURE your power is Placed directly in front of your pupil and thus NOT causing Unwanted prism !!!
You need BOTH to achieve this.
50% is not that great of a Grade in the end- its a FaIL and thats what you are agreeing to when you choose to go this route and not work with professionals and choose to work with online shops that could care less about your vision or health for that matter ! They care about your $$
I have the coating on my glasses and a hate it!!! My glasses cost me $650.00 I also have a pair of glasses from Walmart for $100 that are10 times better!
Anti glare coating cost?
What store do you recommend to get glasses from?
eyebuydirect.com
Just watched a bunch of videos about how to get this anti reflective coating off my glasses. It scratches off very easy making it difficult to see out of your glasses. I will never order another pair of glasses w/ this ridiculous coating.
Actually you dont have to abandon this awesomeness forever.
Current ar "coatings" are not coated at all but rather sort of particle beamed or BAKED if you like on the lenses. It cannot be scratched off. Google Tokai lenses or Hoya. The future is now :D
Ive had them for a few days now.
Mine have total blue control cuz i work alot infront of a screen and so far they are AMAZING.
Strongly suggest trying them out.
Go to Tokai website for more info on their current futuristic selection (they should pay me for this honestly).
Did you have a question for me Igor?
That is not a sentence.
"How stupid are you, you idiot" would be the correct way.
Igor K only dorks argue about reflective coatings on their glasses. Piss off buddy!
Can you replace anti-reflective coatings?
Lisa Reid yes. But more expensive.
Is there anyway to get this coating put on current lenses or would you have to get completely new lenses?
I'm not sure. I know it is just a chemical process. but I'm not sure if a glasses maker would do it for you without having new lenses. If you find out for sure either way please post the answer here so we will all know.
+Igor K I hope I am smart like you when I grow up. Why is one considered cheep when they ask for options? Do you always accept the first deal on a new car?
So update. I got the coating put on with no issues. I should also mention that my lenses didn't have any scratches or anything prior.
I didn't know you could do that. Cool.
Igor K No, I just didn't know the glare would be that annoying and that bad. It didn't bother me so much because I could still see fine. But every time I looked in a a mirror or when I was in a picture there was a big glare on each lens. This was my first pair of glasses, so I had no idea that's how it was.
Wam Bam thank you sir.
will this help with night glares and halos?
DEATHxTHExKIDx1 Yes. Dramatically.
I hate my anti glare coated eyeglasses because of the cleaning is really hard to clean them and they get dirty so easy. I stop wearing them after two weeks.
Jorge Navarro I recently just got a pair from Lens Crafters and I have a tip to cleaning them. Use the Lens Crafters cleaning solution and clean your eyeglass and the frame, then get a cotton ball and dab some alcohol onto it and clean the eyeglass part then get a bounty sheet or something very similar and clean the alcohol off, and boom you're glasses will be streak free and I mean it.
Nice
In a nutshell for glasses... you really want the best vision possible and with a reasonable price. Its worth getting the best quality lenses since you might use it daily for years.
Has anyone mentioned the striking resemblance between you and a mix of both Jamie Hyneman, and Adam Savage? Also, thank you for the informative video. My girlfriend happens to have trouble with smudges, and scratches. Do you find this now, even after 3 years? (If you've still got them?)
Thanks! :)
Is it possible to get the coating on an existing pair of glasses?
You know, I don't know. I've meant to ask my eye doctor, but forgotten every time I've been since this video.
usmannaeem no u can't i tried with my doctor u cant
awesome video thanks. clean your room

I am an optician at an optical shop and have been in the business for nearly ten years. Sorry to hi-jack your comment.
hey, i am an optician too. i am dubious of whether applying tint to a lens reduces strain for the eye.
thank you
