That's a pretty extreme statement. Lots of terrible christian societies, and the best places to live today are the most secular and atheistic. The west was also influenced by native american society which influenced the enlightenment, by utopianism of the 17th and 18th centuries, by local traditions of farmers and artisans that often had pagan or other roots, by revolts and uprisings that occured throughout the world not only in europe, and by the greco-roman tradition. In fact democracy comes from the latter, and it influenced christianity, that's why christians believe in souls and heaven and hell, despite those being pagan. We also know of many historical non western societies that certainly had a lot of freedom, accountability or fellowship for their times, perhaps even compared to today.

@@emilianosintarias7337 The concept of divine justice comes from religion.
Heaven or the hot place for one example.
      Karma for another.
Reincarnation, either "higher" or "lower" is yet another.
That also ignores the historical and foundational significance of religion, pagan or otherwise, in their current society.
For example, the European idea of "Lady Justice" comes from a Roman goddess... and before that, there were Egyptian and even older semi-equivalents.
This is, IMO, very likely the original source of our cultural "reverence" for the *concept* of justice... and I think that applies to most atheists and agnostics.
In effect, "justice" moved from the realm of religion, to a duty of the state, bypassing religion... but it's baked into the foundation of the entire culture.
Some of the worst things in European history come from having a warped sense of justice, such as in 1930['s Germany, when an entire group of people were UNJUSTLY labeled as "enemies of the state"... thus a perversion of justice.
At other times and places, the state effectively destroyed or replaced religion... and that was even worse... example, USSR.
So, like I said, I can agree with being secular, but being atheist is not, in any way that I can see, any kind of improvement.

The generalizations that we hear and read on media, and in private life, tend to go unchallenged. I have recently begun to point out unfair and thought-less sneers and jeers to those closest to me. I am aware of personal sufferings at the hands of individual men, and, these should be acknowledged, but we have to reject the calling-out of the other half of the species. Respect for free speech and articulate writing is pretty much the only thing separating Prof. Fiamengo from her targets in this piece.
That's not nothing, those are 2 key values to hold onto and crucial in this case - but unchecked ideological glosses and partisanship can lead to mental gymnastics among the anti-woke as well. For one thing, a passionate catholic, celebrator of the west, may be a nonconformist in academia, but this is clearly a political debate, and those are not anti-establishment positions when the rubber meets the road. The catholic church essentially founded state power and elite classes in the west, and is one of the largest property holders on earth, with up to 2 million members. It's pretty mainstream. Every American president so far has had to at least LARP at being christian.
Milo, whatever his comedic merits, turned out to be a, sorry to use the word, "grifting" fraud, that seems undeniable given his later trajectory. It was a ticket to ride for him. Besides, he really was a bigot if judged by his actions. I doubt Ms Fiamengo would loudly publicly chastise anyone for showing up, peacefully, to a talk at an American campus, simply for wearing a hijab, for looking muslim. Even as a critic of Islam myself, I would consider that something else, something prejudicial. That's certainly not respecting freedom of expression or judging people by their character. But that's what he did. He was also quite a shallow debater and interlocutor, even pretty far into his political phase, citing things like "loads of studies" followed by some very tangential non sequitur. While nobody should be cancelled, it's not beyond the pale to go hard in print against the respectability of a defense of Milo.
Further, using the word "communist" as an implied insult or point to discredit an academic sounds a bit like the woke" behavior that Ms. Fiamengo has rightfully condemned when it is directed at the catholic medieval scholar being defended here. I think it also probably betrays a 1 sided historical knowledge on her part on the various --isms and -ists, just like those who go after catholics and medievalists may suffer from. There's actually a pretty intricate tradition, particularly in the US arguably the birthplace of communism, between communists and the promotion of free speech and liberal, bourgeois values. Not to mention the close relationship between communists and christians in the US, Germany and France. If that seems strange, it's not stranger than the Catholicism underpinning the dignity of the individual, or of the creation of secular society.
