Hi Staci, by being Russian and knitting all my life, I've never seen this cast-off before! :-) Well, my Motherland is huge, so you never know what one can find... You like to learn many tips and tricks and I thought there is a one that we use a lot at home - we cast-on (long tail of course) with 2 needles held together. This way your first row is not as tight and hard to knit. It is a very common technique we use. Also, we never knit first stitch - it is a slip stitch instead.
Iryna Boehland This is just one of at least 4 variations or techniques called the Russian bind off that I have seen on UA-cam. Maybe it’s different in different areas of Russia. Who knows.
Works wonderfully for toe-up socks. Nice and stretchy and gives a nice edge. Also looks good in pattern for 1/1 ribbing. When the socks are off, it will seem a bit "ruffly" but once you put them on, it all lines up.
WOW! I realized less than 20 minutes ago that the shawl I made for a friend isn't going to block properly because I used the normal bind off and it won't stretch. The stitch will be complementary to the shawl stitch, too. I'm going to rip the binding, find the left over yarn, and make the shawl a bit bigger and use this bind off! Thanks, Staci! What timing!
I did time doing a Civil War era scarf called a Nubia (from a period pattern). I say did time because it took FOREVER!!!. The sides as you knit end up being the ends and the cast on and off are actually the sides. Having a stretchy cast on and off was essential. The Russian Cast on/Cast off was wonderful and really opened up the work.
I love love love your videos! The clear explanations, the perfect visuals, the discussion around the topic (looking at a sample bound off in pattern and comparing to an all-knit bind-off, etc). And as a previous viewer remarked, your hands and nails are truly gorgeous - I do hope you have a little sideline as a hand-model!
Russian bind-off is really nice for any kind of lace pattern that needs to be super stretchy. For socks I prefer Jenny's stretchy bind-off, which is both stretchier than the rib you work it on and less distorting.
wow! Thanks so much! I was playing along with the innovations large knitting machine the other day, making a super quick hat with it. I hate the bind off that they suggest, so I took the stitches off of the machine with a circular needle, and tried to do a regular bind off LOOSELY, but that still didn't fit my Hubby's head. This will do it for sure, as well with the hand knitted hats I do! Thank you again!
What a great bind-off! I knit some socks from your toe-up pattern for my family over Christmas, but my dad's cuffs are a bit tight at the top because of the normal bind-off I used. The bind-off in this video might actually be a solution to that problem! Thanks for posting it!
Thank you soooo much! Ie made sweaters for grandkids ad tried hard to loosely bind off..yet if just a tad hard to get over neck they throw them out!!all that work!so now will definitely try tis bind off.thanks so so much
Great video! I know with the russian bind off, another way to work it "in pattern" is to p2tog instead of k2tog when your pattern calls for a purl stitch. just another variation :)
Hi Stacy! Thanks for the video! With my las project I used a similar bind off. I wanted it to be stretchy and it was. I also knit two and slip the sts from the right needle to the left and knit them together but through the back loop. This way I actually put the left needle into the two sts as if to slip them but not slipping just knitting them together. And the edge looks as common bind off but a lot more stretchy. I don't know how is it called but I guess it's not the same, is it? Thanks again!
Hi. Agree with Iryna. I am from Ukraine and have been knitting for many many years. Taught by my grandmother. Never have seen this bind off method before. Not sure why it is called 'Russian'.
Have you ever gotten around to binding off socks with the Icelandic, and/or the Russian bind-offs? I'm curious how the stretchy bind-off's compare, especially for sock tops. Thanks! I love coming back and re-viewing your vids.
Would this bind off work for a scalloped lace edge like the wishbone stitch? A standard bind off gives a straight edge. I want to keep the scallops as they appear at the beginning. I am knitting a lace stole.
hello, I really like the russian bind off. however, do you have similar cast on be so stretchy like this? I am making a long dress. I want the bottom of the dress being stretchy.
denisebayron - I always list out my nail polish (as well as everything else) in the video description field just below the video. The nail color I'm wearing is CND Shellac polish, in color "Midnight Swim".
Dear VeryPink Knits I might not be one of your students but I need to ask you something. When we knit with two colors do we have to use those to colors for casting on?
Hi, I'm still a beginner, and still learning the lingo. I have a few questions! 1. What did it mean in your video when you said you knit the bind-off "in pattern" as opposed to the first swatch that you showed the Russian bind off with? 2. Also, you mentioned your swatches were made using seed stitch, correct? It's a beautiful looking stitch, and I would love to find a pattern that I could use that with. 3. The first two stitches for the Russian Bind off, would that be equivalent to just knitting the first two stitches together through the back loop? 4. Lastly, how does this bind-off go with socks? I know you mentioned it earlier on in your video. Thank you for being so patient with all my questions!
Binding-off "in pattern" means to knit the knits and purl the purls as you BO, maintaining the pattern established in the fabric. I don't have a video on seed stitch, it is *knit 1, purl 1* across the row, then purling the knits and knitting the purls on every following row, alternating stitches as you did in the first row. Your third question - no, knitting the stitches separately then together is not the same as knitting tbl. There is a better BO for toe-up socks: ua-cam.com/video/SbzeEg6XMwM/v-deo.html
There isn't really a cast-on that looks like this, but to match stretchiness, I'd go with the German Twisted cast-on: ua-cam.com/video/UcwmCuIylII/v-deo.html
Andrea Mulrine - I'm not sure, and it's really your own opinion that counts. If I were you, I'd try this bind-off for a few inches, then see if you like the look of it before you continue.
What happens if you get it wrong and here is a suggestion hoy to sow up holes because I have a lot of holes in my socks and what would happen if I had a loose stich please please please Please reply I don't send nasty post
djamel chader - you can sew up holes using duplicate stitch: ua-cam.com/video/-cfmjyaaAdw/v-deo.html You can also prevent gaps in socks using this technique: ua-cam.com/video/uS8xRMvLzfg/v-deo.html I have a video coming out soon in repairing loose stitches and snags. Hope that helps!

I like this. It’s more straight forward and much cleaner then other methods I have seen.

The Russian bind off looked good in the contrasting yarn!

Loved the video. You always do a great job of explaining the stitch.
Thanks for once again making what I thought was difficult easy peasy!! Love your videos and your 🐾🐾🐾
Thank you for making this video, very clear and simple, it helps me a lot, thanks.

Jaclyn Menna provisional stitch
Just started a pair of toe-up socks, I will have to try this as the bind-off. Thanks!!
I love that scarf you have on please show how to knit that please. Thank you and love the color of your nails.
I've done this before, it was called something else. It is in a book I have of cast ons and bind offs.
Great video! I know with the russian bind off, another way to work it "in pattern" is to p2tog instead of k2tog when your pattern calls for a purl stitch. just another variation :)
Dope vid, and your nails look great.
Thank you. I just used it on my first pair of toe up socks. I really like the give on them.

This is one of the first bind offs that I learned. I had no clue what the name of it was.
I like this bind off, I can see myself using it a lot, I think it looks a bit like a crochet detail called the "crab stitch"
I think this would really rock as a satchel purse in all shades of the rainbow...
Yay! What a super find! Love it. Im going to use it today on a hat- Score 1 for Stacy...yet again. =)
I am doing this with the purl brim of the Downton hat. Will let you know if it works out

Thanks, Linda - after trying many, my favorite sock bind-off is this one: ua-cam.com/video/SbzeEg6XMwM/v-deo.html

VeryPink Knits You are so on top of the details! You must get asked this same question a million times. Thanks for the reply.
Which one would you prefer: icelandic or russian bind off?????

Hi, I'm trying to make a bind off similar with the cast on to finish a scarf.
Witch one do you recomend?
Thank you very much

I'm going to try it!
Joana ( Portuguese knitter :) )
doing a sweater in linen stitch, would the russian bind off be good on this????
Andrea Mulrine - I'm not sure, and it's really your own opinion that counts. If I were you, I'd try this bind-off for a few inches, then see if you like the look of it before you continue.
thanks
I've noticed that it rounds your edges
We'll I don't have one of those tapestry needles so I have a chrocht hook that I use to we've in the ends
What happens if you get it wrong and here is a suggestion hoy to sow up holes because I have a lot of holes in my socks and what would happen if I had a loose stich please please please
