Gain stage every sound to -12db
Turn up the Master fader 12db
Adjust each track's fader, only reducing and never gaining
Reset the Master fader back to 0db
Add Ozone Maximizer
so thats how its done! 👍
can it be fruity limiter?
Bro what the hell is he adjusting the tracks faders to after turning the master to 12 dB. He said legit nothing lol

The beat playing in the background and the seriousness of this video at the start makes you feel like some shit is gonna happen lol
Lmao hitting us with that suspense

explain mono more, please?
they say u should mix in mono period....i used to do that too but it can be good and bad in some incidences. personally for me i found it more n more obsolete once i got better at mixing. good thing is u can always raise the mono one way or another too
Mono is like using only one lane of a road instead of two lanes. the signal only has one "lane" to come thru. Stereo is like using both "lanes of a road." Hope this helps.
By far the best tutorial I've seen yet explaining headroom/gain staging. I've been legit SMASHING my levels against limiters trying to make things louder because I didn't know what I was doing, but this explains so much. Excited to try this out.
PLEASE HELP! WHAT DB should I be trying to achieve for each sound element? Drums, 808, keys, etc
@@LiftOffMusicGroup the secret is your ears bro, you do whatever sounds good to you, u can take all the knowledge you want, but that’s what makes every producer unique is when u do whatever sounds good to you man
@@LiftOffMusicGroupthe nominal level is -12db no matter the sound. -12db should be your peak of sound then raise or lower sounds as you please from there
Not only is this tutorial excellent, but the beat is super sick. Thank you, KC!
I've been doing it like this the whole time and I didn't even knew I was gain staging. I thought I was just leveling haha
its basically just leveling but gainstaging isna better title, there's never gonna be that much differance between cotroling it with the sliders or with the knobs
Ottmar Miller sometimes common sense is just not common 😂
Same, I got two minutes in, and went "oh, that's all?!" 🤣
@@KamilDeKerel I think there is a difference. The knobs are pre fader and the sliders are post fader.
99% of mixing is volume and frequency related, all the premium plugins just combine functionality in a more convenient way
Oh my gosh bro... you’re awesome! I’ve always struggled with getting a good, balanced, yet dynamic mix and I feel like the next track I produce is going to sound so much better now! Thanks so much bro!!
This is truly the best and most organized idea towards leveling. Of course he is passing on info that is out there but he did this tutorial so damn well for all people, especially beginners. Hats off to you KC💥
You guys are teaching a whole new era on producers the techniques they'll use on hit songs 5 years from now... much respect for these videos
The head room made a huge difference even listening through the phone you can tell how leveled and settling it became! Thanks man this is 1 i had trouble learning but now since i have 4 yrs of learning on my own i can understand it clearer... Much appreciated!
If it’s too quiet , crank your monitors . Don’t start pushing faders or master fader to get more volume because you can’t hear it. Gain stage , bring all faders to 0, start leveling important elements to least important . Work your elements around the driving force of your song.
He didn't say the most important thing: you need to gain stage after every effect you add on the chain. 90% of the times when you think that EQ or compressor made wonders, actually only raised the volume and that's bad because you re going against gain staging.
100%!!
Why not add every effect you want to add then gain stage after?
Why not add every effect you want to add then gain stage after?
@@hamidibrahim4336 because by doing so your dry signal is only actually dry for the first effect in the chain. Say you have 5 effects, your 5th and last one is likely not to have headroom to work properly if your first 4 effects raised the volume of a couple DB each. Also, actual DBs and perceived volume are definitely not the same thing, so make sure you use the "output" knob on every effect you use to keep the same in/out DBs.
Would any maximizer do the job
This is the MOST comprehensive gainstaging tutorial I have ever seen!!! Thank you so much for this treasure!!!
Yoo, this has been the most helpful mixing video I've every watched. you didn't have to add compression, reverb just clean and tight. Appreciate it.
Boosting up that master fader as you mix in everything is such a genuine tip, respect
Is that step absolutely necessary tho? Can't you just set the fader levels with the master at 0 db?
never do that with the master fader just turn the volume of your speakers up

Probably one of the best, straightforward gain staging and balancing tutorials. Appreciate the knowledge 👍💯
Based on the video, you still go by the -12 dB rule
I only watched to see how thorough he was and I was surprised at how straightforward it was. Needed this 3 yeas ago when I was stressing on youtube looking for accurate tuts lol
Man great video.. I needed this video
Finally the video I've been waiting for! 🔥

My mixes are now clean an loud thanks to this video. TRUST THE PROCESS
This is a great tutorial for people trying to get their mix right man I have been focusing on my mix for the last 2-3 years now and gain staging is the goat my guys! Its all about leveling the individual sounds, not how much compression and all the paid plugins that you put on the channels
AMEN!
Do you still need to eq?
NBMA Music yeah if your melodies have too much bass in them I eq out the lows and sometimes I eq my high hats / percussion just to make them a little more crispy but you still want to make sure that you gain stage after eqing because it will affect the volume!!
NickyJay Beats thanks man!
Tho it's pretty obvious that you need to get the volume right before you throw a bunch of fx on it..

I agree with all you guys on here... this is the most simplistic, yet effective tutorial for mixing. Great video. I had started to learn gain staging in Reason 10 but I switched back to FL Studio. Now that R11 is a VST rack I can still get the instruments I like in the DAW I prefer, best of both worlds.
I really liked the SSL mixer in Reason and was worried about how I could get the same amount of control in FL until I came across this video so thank you for explaining this technique.
IN A NUTSHELL:
Make sure all your instruments from the start are somewhere close to -18 DB in volume from the instrument panel's volume knob itself. You shouldn't have to see the faders on your mixer turned down a lot. Most plugins work best when the input of the signal if around -18 to -10 DB anyway.
Never seen a knob like this on Logic Pro X. Don't know if the same principles can be applied on logic ?
@@Nico93106 well it should work the same way if you just insert a volume plugin as the first plugin of your chain on the channel you're using, and just turn it down to again somewhere around -18db.
Sure good advice if you are mixing with a vst only. For audio it's best to use mixer faders.
Sorry, but this is awful advice. Your master shouldn't be clipping much above - 9db, although you don't need to follow this religiously. Get Voxengo SPAN and use the K-14 metering and ensure the track doesn't clip over 0.
Nico93106 Yes. Logic Pro X has a Gain plugin 🔌 put it at the front of each channel strip then adjust.
This Tutorial On Gain Staging is by far one of the best to break the science of the concept....Like others I suffered from bad beat mixes n so forth....I Appreciate The Knowledge wished you were in 04' lol

Been trying to find out the issue for months, and I just wasn't gain staging. It's making me laugh. Dude, you are seriously awesome for this.
Your mix has improved bro?
Thanks this really helped me, my songs usually clipped, but now when I used this technique I got a very dope mix & sound, thanks again🤘👊💯
Thanks so much for this! Great advice
Damn! This helped a ton just now! Such a huge difference doing this. I can't wait to actually go into the full mix of my current project! Thanks so much!
All you really need is 5 instances of SoundGoodizer on each mixer track fully maxed. Gross Beat on the master, and you're set!
Straight to the point. Thank you!!
Truly amazing, thanks for this advice will apply it on all beats to come probably!
this helps out so much I usually level and mix everything around the 808...but this video helped me understand the post mix side if Gain staging I appreciate it. Im suprised yall told people this for free....
This is common knowledge. He doesn't OWN gain stage techniques.
@@flyingisland7583 whats wrong with that? everyone has to start somewhere. dont shame him.
@@flyingisland7583 lets hear some then
Flying Island bullshit
@@flyingisland7583 So basically, you're too good and such a good producer that you don't want to share you music. You're full of shit .
old school -> mix with ears
new school -> mix with eyes and just turn the limiter to the max
Not true but ok bro ahahah
I do mix with eyes first, then with ears lol
In old school you still mix with your eyes. You need to make sure you have a healthy signal flow so that the sounds are consistent and blend nicely.
It's not the new school lol, it's just newbies starting. Every modern professional mixer know they have to prioritize ears over eyes.
Thanks for this tutorial. Helps A LOT!!
idk which step did it, but this helped fix the 'kick flattening the rest of the mix' problem I been having. preciate it my boy
Also another useful way to quickly gain stage tracks is by using the rule of 3s. If a track is too loud try lowering it by either -3 dB, -6dB, -9dB, -12dB, -15dB. If you need to go quieter than try lowering by 1dB until you reach a desired level.

I keep coming back for more information then i get stuck on how fire this beat is. Nice vid
thank you so much kcsupreme!
This tutorial is the best for mixing. I never knew about mixing even I've watched a lot. This thing is the best I love you :*
Damn my kicks and 808s are hitting and it SOUNDS CLEAN!! Thank You 🙏🏾
To break it down, route everything to your mixer and adjust the gain knob so they are all hitting around the same db. Around -9 to -12 db. Then mix by utilizing your faders in the mixer. The further down the fader goes, the more db it will decrease by...so its more precise to have your faders zero'd out to work from there. Another important reason is some VST's don't like/react/work well with hot signals.
Nod God so after you done making the beat do eq everything than do this afterwards bro
C'Trill Beatz negative, gain stage first, then level the beat, then do your mixing(in mono) when you do things like EQ and saturation from plugins it can raise or lower the volume of the sound, just adjust your output gain of the vst to make it match the original db
I dont have ozone 5. Can I use maximus or just add fruity limiter and fruity soft clipper on the master channel?
Jerry Baptiste yeah i read that maximus preset wich ends wich .... rmb is like ozone
The best tutorial I've seen for a while. Thanks man.
Thank you KC for the process just re did a mix on a beat and im amazed at the results. .
Rule thumb number one
Never mix by solo-ing the tracks
U need to mix the kick compared to the 808 and the other drums not the kick only till the volume of it its good.
The beat in the background to fire I cant concentrate
Thanks for the video, it was very informative!
Love your work kc
Would be cool if u did a/b with and without gain staging in the end
truth be told he more-less just did his own personal mix. gainstaging usually consist of you keeping ur output fader down together and raising them individually ...none the less this was good to however if you do other genres i suggest watching other tutorials as well.
Never seen anyone mix in solo so much. thats crazy. sounds good though lol
I was thinking the same
Dude is keeping the loudness of all the sounds he sets in his head like damn
i love that beat and melodies. the kick and bass was smooth to. Great job on that.
Thanks man for your work I got a lots and understanding clearly
Based Gutta was doin it right all along time
JUST WHAT I WAS THINKING HAHA The dude said everyone was weird for using the mixer faders, he was fucking right
One thing I see he didn't mention was panning. Panning is important just as well as gain staging. Panning gives instruments space you don't want ALL your instruments straight up the middle.
Because that's not what the video is about..? Really? Lol
@@contra-bassrecords874 panning is part of the mixing process tho.
Absolutely but it has nothing to do with gain staging.
@@contra-bassrecords874 Gain refers to volume, and panning is the control of volume between the left and right. It's absolutely a part of gain-staging. If you look at the mixer in this video, the sounds he's using are actually panned to begin with.
@@bl6628 gain and volume aren't the same if you wanna get into semantics. Gain staging is important for allowing headroom and creating the correct dynamics before dynamic processing. Panning doesn't affect either of these therefore it seems irrelevant. Feel free to change my mind.
What a well explained Video! Thank you
Thank you KC !!!!
Hi, thanks for the tips, anyway is it possible to have a video where you talk about setting the limiter right in order to get the desired loudness?
There's a new standard for measuring it, I don't remember the name now, it must be something like lufs. I've heard that the final level must be kept at - 1db from the ceiling to avoid clipping when converting to mp3, or another sampling frequency (like from 44.1khz to 48khz).
Also, seems that UA-cam, Spotify and all the digital distributors have their lufs value to be used.. Thank you
i'm a fairly new musician and i've done this before even knowing it was a thing..lol oop.. i guess i'm off to a good start, but great! advice and vid take notes.
wow youre so cool bro!!
