Sorry to disappoint you about the information I may have had for you. Can’t help you about lice, species, and weight. I probably have seen a thousand whales in my career, but somewhat from afar. All I can say is that they are beautiful gentle giants. Other than humans, they may be the smartest of all the animals. A decade or more ago, many laws were put in place to help insure their survival and they have helped tremendously. Off of Long Island, in the last say five years, there have been more whales than ever close to the beach. That is because of the tremendous amount of the menhaden(bunker) schools available to them for their consumption. The last few years I fished (rod & reel) out of a 17’ boat. When a whale started swimming towards me, I said “I am out of here”. Even though he may have been only curious, I couldn’t take the chance of him accidentally overturning my small boat with an effortless flip of his tail. They are beautiful animals that should be protected.

@montauked17 I knew you'd have some interesting vignettes, and you lived up to the billing! Whales are so majestic, and I love that they will occasionally allow humans to assist them. As for the schools of fish near the beach that attract the whales, I was caught up in one of those schools about forty years ago while swimming in Amagansett at sundown. All of a sudden the waters appeared turbulent, and in a a few seconds we all realized a school of fish (not sure what type) had made their way to us and were everywhere, jumping out of the water and all. We decided to get out of the water because of what might be following that school.

Hey Don, I must say that was a very wise decision to get away from that school of fish.
