At this point, I might as well let KEXP find all my music for me.. Thank you, thank you, thank you for introducing me to these fine folks.. Antibalas ROCKS!
I listened to this. It was over. My hearing changed. Instead of hearing Antibalas, I was hearing my dishes being washed and put away. Ordinary everyday sounds that I was making using my body, such as that from the dishes, normally I had not paid attention to it. Now this had captured by attention, and it was music. And the movements I was making to wash and put away the dishes, was dance. If I had been listening somewhere else, when it was over, the sound of somewhere else would have been music. My vision had been changed to. I guess you could say Antibalas produced a change in consciousness.
Antibalas was to come to the Cat’s Cradle (Carborro, NC) in 2020, but COVID-19 shut down the state a week before they were to perform. That was 7 months ago, and as the pandemic has rolled on, i haven’t stopped getting deeper into Afrobeat. This music expresses the spirt of our time. Please stay safe and come back and play in NC as soon as it’s safe to do so!
28:20: Amen. You guys have been "recharging my batteries" since 2007. Secondly, I want that incredible outfit. Third, Antibalas will forever be the outstanding leader of the revival of Afrobeat music in America, IMO!
I saw their show in Utah.... I absolutely loved their show. As an African I was not expecting it. I saw a whole bunch of white boys looking like IT engineers... I said oh oh this can't be good. But when they start playing I fell in love. I danced the whole night through.

Many years ago at Austin City Limits festival I wandered into the Gospel tent, and I heard this band for the first time ever. They were captivating. I have never been in another situation where a random sample of people among thousands all got down together. The rest of the festival goers had no idea this was going down inside. Don't miss out on these opportunites. Seek them out.
@Michele P Sorry didn´t get most of it. But last year´s record Curiche is lit. They realeased a single on April this year also powerful and direct political message conserning Chile situation. Fran has taken the role of lead vocals in an awesome way. So, really I don´t get your point - anyways long life to afrobeat and the power to fight abuse through music 🔥
vert interesting to hear what they speak about.... but once it's done, if you only wish to listen to the music again, here it is : 15:00 / 31:27 Great broadcast! thank you ! 😇
I play percussion. Mostly congas, and cajon...Many gigs! ...whenever I watch an afro beat band, Shekere my favorite part!!!! I told my wife that I wanted that position once in my life! ...not sure that she saw what I was seeing!!!! 🕺
I'm so grateful and indeed lucky to have been introduced to the Shekeré. I play many instruments but have gotten to see the world and meet most of my musical heroes all because of this magical gourd! Thanks for your thoughtful comment. New music coming soon...
Dude, Antibalas has gotten the stamp of approval from guys like Tony Allen. Go and listen to their albums. They do Fela’s music justice. Plus, they were the house band for the Fela Broadway musical for some time.
@@nanuco29fuentes94 So you're basically making the argument that they're a pseudo cover band. Essentially. I'm sure they're competent musicians. No doubt about that. But their sound just doesn't sound authentic to my ears. I'll give them a try. I love Fela's music and his music has teeth. Fela's music doesn't have that Kumbaya feel. It's very crude. I take your point.
@@leascaart Saying Antibalas are nothing but a Fela clone is like saying all rock bands sound like The Beatles. They’re an afrobeat band, with their own original songs. Of course they’re obviously heavily influenced by Fela. He invented afrobeat, but go through their discography you’ll see they have their own sound, are great musicians, and write really good songs. Every album is different.
@@nanuco29fuentes94 No, it's not. I would never say all rock bands sound like The Beatles. Led Zeppelin sound nothing like The Beatles. I'm only referring to Antibalas and how they copy Fela's music, sound, spirit, etc. That's it. It just sounds like a knock-off to me. It doesn't sound authentic to me. It's like Muse and Radiohead. To me, MUSE sounds like a band created for those who cannot understand Radioheaed. That's Ok too. Some people will get offended by that. I understand why. Back to Antibalas, I guess it just sounds like nostalgia music to me. That's all. Interesting conversation. This convo can lead us to the question "what is art?l" LOL.
@@leascaart but again. Antibalas is an afrobeat band. Not a Fela clone. Just like Parliament, Kool and the Gang , and others are funk bands, with their own distinct songs, who were influenced by James Brown. But you wouldn’t say they were James Brown copycats. Antibalas is influenced by Fela, but if you listen closely to their albums they have their own sound and experiment with different rhythms, sounds, and textures.
That sound 💣💥
@Rhett Myles yea, I have been watching on Flixzone} for months myself :)
@Rhett Myles Yup, been using flixzone} for years myself :)
@Rhett Myles Definitely, have been using Flixzone} for years myself :)
The flixzone is reportedly a scam. I didn't try it myself and wouldn't.

I feel the same, I usually go straight from KEXP to Bandcamp!
Right???? KEXP kept my spirit alive during the pandemic fr
I never pass up their suggestions.
