I'm from Northern Ireland and even I can say that for someone who does not normally have this accent, it is extremely hard to perfect, and here Daniel Day Lewis does just that, he does perfect it and sounds as though he was born and raised in N.Ireland so for that he deserves total respect.
His father was an example of someone who was frail but who had a spine of stainless steel. An everyday hero. His bravery kept Gerry alive even after his death
Great scene...can definitely relate to this, in so many ways....I'm irish...my mum died when I was real young....I ran wild as a teenager. Got in trouble/drink/drugs....my father was old school like Giuseppe....a quiet, harmless, good natured gentleman
As someone who grew up in Belfast and lived through the troubles, this film brings back all my old childhood memories. 27 years for something you didn't do, you will never get that time back, never get your youth back yet still no prosecutions where ever brought against the corrupt people that put them there. An absolute disgrace to British justice. Their only crime was being Irish
This film has always been to me one the greatest heavy weights ever, at least to me personally especially since as far as I know this really is the story of what had happened in real life on real time within the real lives of these Northern Irish including those British soldiers who lost there lives in that pub......& this is one of those scenes that just about knocks the wind out of me every time. Fortunately, I've never had to endure such lifelong heartaches such as this. Just try & imagine being affected so directly by such injustice.
How annoying is it that The great Pete Postelthwaite didn't get an Oscar for this role? He was in an extremely tough category going up against Leo DiCaprio and Ralph Fiennes in some amazing performances AND YET who won? Tommy Lee Jones! In a so do performance......:-/...
OMFG His accent!!! I mean seriously if i didn't know he was English actually!!! I mean jeez ain't this just totally surreal and mindblowing?!? DDL is usually such a kind slow-talking thinking about words for kinda like an hour til they come out.... and here hes just the complete opposite!!! I tell ya: THAT IS ACTING!!

@ultracrunchy That's not an Irish accent. It's a Belfast, Northern Irish accent. It's very, very different from a standard Irish accent, and Day-Lewis has it spot on.
There's no standard Irish accent ffs....nearly every county is different. Donegal, cork , limerick, Waterford, wexford....even Dublin has different types within the county
As a Northern Irish man, I can honestly say no actor has come as close to perfecting our tough accent as DDLewis. He's not 100% but he's definitely around the 95% bracket, which is a tremendous attempt. James Nesbitt could do the accent of course because he's got the unfair advantage of being Northern Irish, but even with that advantage, as an average actor, he couldn't pull off the emotion or range DDLewis does in this scene. American actors are the worst for trying accents outside of the USA, bar Meryl Streep, who's the only one that perfects accents but generally American's are woeful at it. British and Irish are better at American accents than Americans are at British and Irish.
"American actors are the worst for trying accents outside of the USA...generally American's are woeful at it. British and Irish are better at American accents than Americans are at British and Irish." Are you really going to stand by such a ridiculous assertion?
@@kylelindsey7902 True I'm British and some of our actors are horrendous at American accents, even though I have never been to the US even I can tell that they are making an hash of it and cringe.
man... pete was a fantastic actor... he was class in the usual suspects aswell.... Day-Lewis in this and there will be blood and my left foot and lincoln were absolutely hands down stand out performances.
I read somewhere a while ago that Daniel's scene was mostly adlib. eg he was told the general story or script to the affect of a sons resentment towards his father because of a seemingly innocent concern or insult to something that happened when he was a child. Apparently Pete nor anyone on the crew knew what Daniel was going to say or do. Not sure where or how long ago i read it but has anyone else heard or seen an interview saying as much?
@20Tomas08 Yes, I know. By "standard" I mean a neutral, regionalism-free accent of the kind that's used by TV news people and that you get taught at theater school.
I watched this movie in my high school English class along with My Left Foot. Ever since I keep thinking Daniel Day Lewis is actually Irish and he's just pretending to be from England who can also do a perfect American accent on the side.
Michael Colby I know I'm replying to an old comment, but what the hey 😅. Pete wrote a book about his life, where he mentioned his thoughts about the nomination. He didn't care whether he won or not, but was just glad he was nominated. However he did think Tommy Lee Jones had done better roles previously, and that DiCaprio was much more impressive that year. I've seen What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and although I really like Tommy Lee Jones, I agree with Pete.
haha I agree he would have been perfect when he was younger. He would be way to old for the role now though. Probably the only thing he cant do is make himself younger.
I know!! that year anyone could have gone home with the Oscar for best supporting actor...anyone but Tommy Lee Jones. Don't get me wrong, he's a good actor, but that was the weakest of the five nominated performances
The chemistry between these two actors hits you right in the solar plexus.
This scene brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it 🥹
This is one of the greatest scenes in film. Daniel is flawless.

Accent wise he's convincing alright but does he look Irish/Northern Irish?
yup

I wonder how many times have I watched this scene in my life. Great actors, both of them!
i love the quiet dignity Pete Postlewaithe portrays in this role. This was Oscar-worthy
Daniels accent was spot on, the acting in this movie was incredible
How does one become this good? Oh God, his talent is out of this world.

I think he's done a different accent in every movie. DDL is KING.

Beautiful great actor Daniel Day Lewis 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
DD Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite(RIP) Two of the best actors ever. They did the Conlans (RIP) proud in this film.
They look like father+son...brilliant actors- for the ages.
Two of the greatest actors in an amazing scene.

R.I.P. Pete Postlewhaite, you'll be greatly missed
A mesmerizing scene from two mind-blowing actors in a fantastic film.
Magical Acting!!
i love how he always adds random extra bits like the constant eye squinting! just brings more to the scene!

a father's love for his son, thanks

both of them. this scene haunting me. I remember every dialogue, every expression.
The acting by ddL in this scene is breathtaking amazing actor 👏
And this, my friends, is acting at it´s finest
It is so weird to think of the different movies he's done while watching his other performances. Amazing!
we often underestimate the people closest to us until were the ones in utter despair and theyre not
Incredible scene - I had forgotten what this film was like.
Great actors 😊.
Two of the greatest ever actors in one scene
This is a masterpiece.

There are plenty of British and Irish actors who do shit American accents. We Americans are just not as pissy about it.

So true, everybody. A titanic scene. I found myself breaking apart into tears. In four minutes!
At a loss for words.
I almost cried today watching this film. The main reason was because of the brilliant acting.
"...and I wrote your name on the ground - your stupid Giuseppe fuckin name, I wrote it in the dirt and I fucking pissed on it! I PISSED ON IT!"
LOL!
Why the hell hasn't this film been released on Blu-Ray? Grrrr

Omg my dad used to do the same, scream and shouting on the side lines while l played football lol he could not even kick ball lol

one of the points in which the film differs from reality is that father and son were not together in prison
😊

@spiralisedcat Haha... "MY Left Foot" Did you mean to do that ;)
@Cedramaaya they are father and son,,he tryed to sell his medal he won in football,
This needs subtitles
This is especially poignant given DDL's problematic issues w/ his actual sick father.
I think Pete was amazing, but I think either Ralph Fiennes or Leonardo DiCaprio deserved it. Cloes call though, but not Tommy Lee Jones!!!
