Mustie's new racing lawnmower! Famous last words: "That might be an issue..."
He and Brian should race this thing and another one through the woods until it blows up! While filming, of course.
It's a true craftsman who oils the bearing journals on a time bomb.
Oh yes! This had the feel of the question...."Why do they wipe the death row inmate's skin with alcohol before inserting the lethal injection needle into the arm?"
It's the humane way, haha
*Do no harm!*
Hey craftsman push mowers are good as long as they have a briggs and stratton engine. I have one that cuts extremely well and i only paid $10 for it. It also has a electric start which only needed was a charger and need battery.........until my dogs decided to do some maintenance of their own to it. Poor $85 harness never stood a chance nor did either of my push mowers pull ropes. They no longer sell the harness so now i have to make my own. Yeah me! Lol
It's like all mowers today ,most all are made by MTD. My Craftsman riding mower was made by Husqvarna, before they started being made by MTD. MTD Products - Wikipedia

Hi Martin !
Being a mechanical genius obviously isn't knowing you can fix something by replacing all the broken parts with new but knowing what parts something will run without. Well done.
My guess is that this will be the first ever "free pick" put out by the street in front of Mustie's garage...

Really looking forward to you getting this mower running again we had one of these at my old house and seeing it run would bring back memories.
Mustie1: it's shaking? Like a Harley !!!. Hahaha. That's was funny.
Weld a piece of scrap steel on the flywheel as counterweight ;-)
Great video!
That was fun and instructive at the same time. Looks like the fuel filter might be backwards. Actually it works in both directions, and isn't too important on a motor that's beating itself apart. Thanks for another entertaining episode Mustie.
Looks like the design of the old Gravely L engines with the valves on opposite sides of the piston. They shook too but not as bad. Thanks for opening up that case and letting us see what was in there. I never would have guessed what was in there.
As PEG from 'ZIPTIESnBIASPLIES" would say, "You don't need all those parts"!!

Pretty sure he would have filled the crankcase with seafoam first and ran it off starter fluid while yelling"look at her spit boys! That right there is a choice cold start!"
You don't need to worry about the counter balance! *cue greta clip* The vibration means its good!
Nah hed probably feed the engine pc light or potato water till it blows up
"shakes like a Harley".....(in a split sec he was thinking about 2-3 ideas/projects to use that in )
Hey Mustie, many thanks as always. Looking fwd to you revisiting some of the vehicles you bought last year, especially the red Ford truck and the muscle car. Happy wrenching man.
I think all the dirt and dust shaking out of the grass catcher shows how bad the vibrations are. Love watching Mustie wrench!

Balance weights on a 1972 14HP Koehler (balance gears) (2 gears ) granaded - took out part of the bearing shaft casting on the inside of the crank. After much searching and contacts with Koehler, was told the engines could run both ways. One brand of tractor would run that engine with the balance gears and another brand using that engine (cub) would run it without them. That tractor is still running today as healthy as a 50 old engine can be. Great video, enjoyed it.
I'd bet it'll cut the grass one more time. haha great work Mustie
Over here they would put the hood back and sell it with a chair massage function 🤣

Mustie,
I hope you read this comment. My wife owned a 1984 Plymouth mini van with a four cylinder Mitsubishi engine. It was a real POS.
It had a balancing shaft. The chain on the shaft started rattling so I removed the chain and left the shaft in the engine and I just put it back together.
It has been a long time so I don't remember if the timing chain went around the balancing shaft sprocket or if it had a separate chain in the crank. Either way, I remember removing the chain from the shaft and I left the shaft in the engine. It shook a little more but it ran ok and it was running fine several years later when we traded it off. In fact that engine shook from the day it was new so it didn't seem that much worse.
I hope you cleaned the crank case out from all the shrapnel. I was sitting here saying, Mustie, please take some time and try to do it right because it actually might work !!!
Try draining the oil and flushing the crankcase. Give it a real chance to live. Rig up a good throttle. Then, try to mow with it. You might be surprised. It might actually work. It would made a great third video in this series.
I didn't think that engine would ever run again - good skill, good commitment, good video :-)
I'm a bit surprised and disappointed that you didn't take it for a spin, still a great video as always :)

Thanks for your time and effort that was a very informative video, and fun to watch!
Mustie is the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) Coroner
Its like watching old episodes of Quincy (Jack Kluggman) solve the mysteries of a death
Except us 'interns' don't pass out on the floor when he dissects the engine. 😂
i vote for a 3rd video where you push it outside, take the spring off the governor and send it til it self destructs. this was awesome
Amazing! You did it again Oh Mustie One! That old engine was built to last, like a Wright Cyclone with a couple of jugs blown off by flak!
Interesting "what if" for "fun"! Enjoyed watching.
Newer versions of that engine have an arm that keeps the counter weight in line instead of that key and grove. They also replaced the woodruff key with a keyway because they had a problem with them shearing. It's a weird engine. I actually like the design. Having access to the internals by just removing the top lid is genius but they have too many issues.
God the grinding metal next to the open computer.
Nah, polishing 😂
mcguiver would be proud of you!!! He would have bent a little more pitch in the blade, fastened the engine to a device that would fly himself out of wherever he was stranded. Awesome vidio. You never give up.
I have learned a lot about how a carbueator functions in your videos. You explain very well. Good teacher.
Thanks David
this is not on subject, but i thought i would thank you for your videos that inspired me to get my Honda brush cutter out of retirement and fix it. it went wrong and got thrown to the back of the shed :) . Now running sweet ! .
Like a harley 😂 that had me dead
That was indeed as much fun as Mustie1 hoped we have watching it. The dust rattling and shaking off reminded me of a combine in a field. What fun!
If any man out there as a kid ever wanted to now everything about small engines and how they work this is their channel. How could this have been so fascinating to me, lol?
That was cool! I think that the engineers figured out that rather than have spinning weights on the crank that requires a certain amount of room and case, they came up with this setup that allows a smaller case and slimmer, lighter engine that is easier to spin up on starting. I guess they forgot the Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) method of engine building. Anyhow, this was an enjoyable teardown and learning lesson from the small engine whisperer. Keep up the great work!
Igor, it lives!!
And you didn't take it around the parking lot at least once? I know you're planning a part 3 for that event, I think your loyal subscribers not only deserve it we insist upon it!! Please!
Mad Max Mustie did it again 👍😁 "It rattles like a Harley, but it is junk anyway so lets have some fun" 🤗😎 Nice 😁👍

It's now a vibrating " Massage Mower", sell it as a feature, LOL !!
Magic fingers version :)
Theres a russian channel called garage 54 where they took a lada engine and cut the balances off a crankshaft much like you did. It ran but shook lol. I like how even though youre half assing the reassembly youre still putting oil on the cap bearing and making sure everything goes back together mostly like factory. Good stuff
You're the man! Awesome video as always 😊

Good one! That mower surely has a used engine SOMEWHERE in the stash, and deserves a second chance!😊
I hate that so many companies mix plastic gears with metal ones. The plastic ones always break after a while..
Plastic runs quieter than metal does and holds up surprisingly well. I doubt metal gears would have looked too good after random metal bits ran through them.
@@1pcfred Do you really think that you could hear the noise difference on a lawn mower engine? You are correct about the noise, but those plastic gears are definitely a fail point. (Just not in this case)
@@61rampy65 some small engine equipment is pretty quiet. Honda has a reputation for making quiet gear. As far as what I think goes there's more factors than just longevity to consider when making a choice. I know I am not making an heirloom purchase when I buy yard equipment.
