Becase one year later, even the latest free weekend and 50% off sale on Steam only served to enhance the negative image of Company of Heroes 3 which many already had about it.

Company of Heroes 3 was Relic Entertainment’s attempt to change, improve and make fresh a franchise which is almost 20 years old at this point, but the 10 years which went by between the second and third installment created a fan base which isn’t up for underwhelming changes and subpar improvements.
Now, one year later, even the latest free weekend and 50% off sale on Steam only served to enhance the negative image of Company of Heroes 3 which many already had about it. Cementing its low review rating which is in such stark contrast to Company of Heroes 2 the sequel most quoted as the bar for quality this franchise has set for itself. This is despite the year’s worth of updates and changes the developers did to try and improve the game.
I want to speak about two visual problems I personally had with the game from the get go and which show me the developers didn’t do a quality job on this title.
First of these is the disconnect between gameplay, cinematics and story elements in the opening of the Italian campaign which was the developers attempt to bring something entirely new to the franchise, like the turn based campaign map gameplay.
But before that gameplay even starts the player is treated to a beautiful cinematic of combat in an italian town which ends with a huge battle at the square with tank duels, artillery, aerial bombardments, and infantry combat. Almost all of this happens during the day, while in the game it all plays out during the night. It is also highly underwhelming with fewer units in battle, hardly any abilities to use and just not nearly as satisfying as advertised by the cinematic.
Multiplayer is another game feature which instead of getting improved and expanded on was minimized and simplified giving players even less incentive to keep playing in the long term. There is only the quick match option while the battle groups are one bright ray of gameplay sunshine which was dug up from the franchise's past to enright the gameplay with unit upgrades and unlocks mid match.
As for the feedback, reviews and impressions from other players I have seen, we can group them together into a few categories. First is the overall graphical design which many call cartoonish especially compared to the previous game in the franchise which felt far more realistic, historical and epic.
The second major gripe players have with this one are underwhelming campaigns which simply don’t offer the same level of emotional impact or memorable moments like those of previous games. One thing I especially agree with here are reviews mentioning how the Africa core campaign is not even focusing on the experiences of an actual company, which is the literar title of this game, but on a talking head of general Rommel for story exposition.
Third issue many have with Company of Heroes 3 gameplay are units which don’t feel powerful enough in combat and feel arcadey instead of realistic especially when you focus on the explosive moments like blowing up an enemy or tank duels. The sounds are not there, the visuals feel bland and the action does hold a grip over the players as it used to.
The fourth issue is a mixed box of technical glitches, unbalanced factions, units, as well as weak voice acting. I have made sure to play all the games features and tried to confirm what others have said and I must admit many of these issues are still there.

The store got as much negativity as it did for three key reasons: The first is that the game is a full priced release and people by in large are just sick of nickel and diming mechanics being in fully priced releases. The general opinion is that cosmetic purchases are really only acceptable if a game is free to play. The second is that the actual purchases split up skins between individual units, and you can't even get a complete set of all of your units with the same overall skins; forcing users to buy a bunch of individual packs and still get mis-matched armies. The third reason is probably the most critical though. After one month of player feedback being largely negative, the big major update that was touted as addressing player feedback.... added a microtransaction store as the big part of that update. It comes across as insanely tone deaf and greedy.

    • @perafilozof
      @perafilozof  Місяць тому +1

Yeah, I totally get that part. And I understand the point about adding in the Store as a player feedback content update, cruel. But I must say I still don't know what about the skins themselves would be a problem to anyone who simply doesn't care about skins. They don't change the gameplay which is the main idea.
Making those who do pay, pay a lot more, is not right or fair. But I also don't think that is a big issues for the rest of the players, just those who really want skins.

Because the people who play a ww2 game want see historical accurate content not toy soldiers with unhistorical skins that is the fact, and the first thing they must to do is finish the game.

It was during work of Steve Mele - Executive Producer... He was fired somewhat later and since then Relic was makking more sense in their work... After Sega left them alone, they seems to be even better, but had to drop console version, due to lack of tools and people from Sega.
16.07 is going to give us another update, so who knows how less bad is going to be.... I can say, that even now it is quite good, but I love Relic Design RTS and was hungry of them after DOW:Soulstorm.

Yes, I play mostly 1v1, almost from day1. At start I was playing team games, but it is way better experience, when you know how to play and do 1v1. Some people say, that 2v2 are better. 3v3 and 4v4 feel like for people who do not know what to do or want to do meme builds or smash things together. A game like this with abilities and different units compositions do not work in a large scale.

I played it during the free weekend after not touching it due to the early reviews. It's the weakest of the 3 games but not by miles. I enjoyed it and purchased it at the discounted price of £21.99 which I feel is definitely worth it now after completely the Italian SP. I predominantly play SP.
It is quite apparent to me the updates they have made since launch has likely really improved the game considerably.
    Pros:
    - The dynamic campaign map is a great evolution of Relics pass overworld campaign maps (DoW Dark Crusade)
    - The gameplay and controls are strong and still keeps much of the CoH series feel
    - The use of external actors to influence in battle/in mission gameplay really gives a great deal of flexibility
    - There's a ton of modes pour many hours into and enjoy
    - The "unit history" approach is fantastic way of having the player connect with their units/companies
    Cons:
    - Although there are tailored missions during the dynamic campaign, none felt as dramatic or impactful as CoH1 (to be fair, there's only a few from CoH2 that compares too)
    - Lack of actual variety in maps during skirmishes is pretty bad
    - Although there's plenty of things to do during the campaign, a number of it appears quite superfluous (emplacements for example).
CoH 1 > CoH 2 > CoH3 but if you can get the Steam deal with the whole bundle where CoH3 is heavily discounted then it's worth it.
If CoH1 is a 9/10, CoH 2 would be an 8 and CoH3 would be a 6 coming close to 7 if only there is a strong campaign added to it.

TL:DR me and my friend want to get a CoH game, which one do you advise for primarily co-op against the ai, CoH 1 with the bundle for everything, CoH 2 without dlc's cuz we didn't look to much into it or CoH 3 base game. Could you also tell me why you chose it so i can understand it beter. Thanks for anyone who reacts :D
Small question, me and my friend want to buy a company of heroes game, we enjoy playing together and care more to fight against ai in co-op and the occasional pvp against eachother for fun. We like maps with chokepoints to have defenses such as river maps in Coh 1, we also like to paratroop and don't care much about pvp. We also don't want to spend to much since we won't know how much game play we will actually get and do this game occasionally and not full time. Since CoH 3 is in sale we would be interested to maybe buy that, but we looked at CoH 1 and it is 6 bucks and some extra for the base game, opposing front and tales of valor which seems beter since it's cheaper that 30 for CoH 3. What would you advise and for what reason? Thank you :D

Late answer to this but here's my thoughts:
Either CoH2 or CoH3. Leaning CoH2 if it's in regards to price but for a complete deal then CoH3.
CoH1 for pure comp stomp becomes unfun against Expert (they cheat much more than the sequels). CoH2 and CoH3 is on par with one another for vs AI stuff.
The only downside I'd say for CoH2 though is that you don't get the full experience with base game. You can't play as 3 other factions for example without buying 2 DLCs, and extra vs AI content (Theater of War & Ardennes Assault) is locked behind it's own set of DLCs. There's also the Commander system in which you'd need to grind/buy commanders that you find have fun units/abilities in their kits. The campaigns are also left in their unfixed state with bugs dating back to launch still existing.
CoH3's only downside for me is the price. It's much more content filled from the get go; the only thing not in base game being the 1 company for campaign and 2 multiplayer battlegroups (similar to the Commander system, this can be grinded/bought).

COH 3 is a mixed bag for me. I'm mostly in mp and I recently bought the game coming from coh2. I find myself struggling to keep units in check because of the muffled sounds and smaller/less impactful UI. On the other hand the gameplay feels much more smooth and responsive. Overall I think it has potential but the game's success at this point depends only on the dev's will to refine it and improve it by listening to the community. Fingers crossed.

@@perafilozof In all honestly. I use to play COH2 every second day after work. At last 1 game. It was fun and enjoyable. At this moment, I don't want to play CoH3. I have no crave at all.
      Here is how I feel:
      - Units do not respond same way, they still feel sluggish. I don't feel confident, they will fallow my orders.
      - The ability to read the map is lacking. I steel feel like units blend into the background. Reading battlefield is a pain.
      - I have trouble distinguishing is units winning or loosing long range fire exchanges. In CQB you can see HP going down fast, so its easier, but not perfect. In previous games you can spot the bullets hitting models or sandbags. You could figure out how accurate unit is by just observing where the salvo hit. CoH3 feels like bullets in infantry fights disappear and hit at random. Sometimes units is loosing HP and you haven't see the incoming fire hitting models.
      - Some of the units feel OP. In Coh2 you could use conscripts to defeat higher tier units by placement and tactics, retreat to next cover and shot. Here it feels like, if the units have better stats it will win no matter the cover or positioning. Even when running in a middle of open space, against certain units I feel powerless even with numerical and positional advantages. This is reflected by the last point. Because battlefield is less readable, and harder to track bullets. It feels the damage happened, ignoring everything else.
      - It feels like the stats of the units, can override the numerical advantage or tactic. Micromanagement can't compensate RNG. CoH 3 Encourage using meta builds even more and no matter how good you are, even if your opponent make mistakes. Unless you use meta build its hard to compensate for units stats.
I just want to add that:
      - UI is soulless, no dirt, grid or epicenes. It feels like devas have no idea for art design, and decide to trash old UI without learning from it.

Afrika kampagne was nice a 3 out of 5 my problem with it was it was too short, only englisch there was a single one german word "wüstenfuchs" and than he started speaking englisch again so it felt so off a person talking in englisch while he should in german and have englisch only subtitles. Hi, that is unfortunate but also understandable. I am a new player in a lot of RTS games and MP communities myself and this is a wide issue. Not just with this game but in each and every one. This tells me the MP player experience isn't structured about how people behave but how they should behave and it creates the friction you have experienced. Simply put, veteran players don't want to be involved in matches with new players. And that is where the bad experience comes from as the developers make systems where minimizing matchup times is more important than those matches actually being enjoyable.

In team games, the ELO difference is a bit wonky at times though; sometimes 3 people would have low ELO and the 4th has a really high one and they get matched with all medium ELO players for example.
If they are toxic in Co-op mode, then those guys needs to get a life.

@@raulquintana1549 It is not moba.... It is Relic design of RTS which focuses on territory control and strategy in a small scale. It is an evolution of Dawn of War conditions of victory - capture and hold / take and hold... First Dota mod in Warcraft 3 was in 2003, DOW1 was in 2004. But I quess they may took insipiration from this mod in COH series to make it simpler, than in DOW.

Bloob smashing is what I hate in RTSes, and only Relic managed to make something different than others, but still with some complex mechanics...
      They have:

      -cover system
-not simple dps stats (accuracy, fire rate, reload speed of magazine, time to aim, time to set up, accuracy on the move, scatter...)

      -capture point desing of resources
      -squad of units
      -interactive terrain
      -crushable / burnable obstacles
      -side armor + penetration mechanics

      - auto vaulting
      - Tanks can carry squads
      - weapon towing, you can relocate your static weapons ( like flak 88)
-Night maps (COH 2 only have day maps)
-Dak faction is very unique and very different from other factions.
-dynamic squads( US elite squad can change from bazuka to SMG on the go)
      - in a full 4v4 late game you don't have slowness and game shutter anymore.
      - Heigh mechanic, units that are on higher position has extra accuracy adding more deep to the game play
      - Battlegroupa is the right fusion of coh1 doctrine with coh2 commanders
This and other things make the multiplayer fun, now light vehicles play a bigger role in the game, in coh2 light vehicles were useless and people skip them, that was a major flaw on game play.
There are points still were coh2 is superior and those are:
      - Sound, coh2 sound still on top
      - VFX some of the explosion and effects are still superior on coh2, coh3 patches are improving though
