- P-47D Thunderbolt "Bubbletop" - by Tamiya
Full build video for Tamiya's P-47D Thunderbolt. The timelapse video shows some of my various techniques from painting to weathering. Check out the links below for more detailed videos of the cockpit and machine gun bay.
Ive used a combination of the basic parts from Tamiya with photo etch from Eduard and resin parts from Aires to create a very detailed recreation of the actual aircraft.
Aires #4467, #4241
Eduard #49198 which came as part of #4801 (Big Ed)

What a fantastic modeler you are.just brilliant, thanks for posting
👍👍👍 thank you!
Wow, I can't believe how much detail goes in to this! I couldn't stop until I saw how it came out! Awesome!
+Maxx Oliver Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it and there's more to come!
Great build!
Something unique to P-47s which is overlooked are the gun barrels. They had a solid “sleeve” over the cooling jackets when protruding from the wing so the solid kit parts are more accurate than the cooling jackets provided by Aires. Those would be good on a P-51 though!
All around fantastic video showing off your talent! Love the markings choice and the details on the landing gear and engine. Wow!
Thanks! Unfortunately I realized the gun barrel mistake after I was finished.
Amazing job, The Thunderbolt came out very nice.
Thanks!
Best detailed model build I’ve seen yet.....😎
Thanks!
Great model build, but what a banger of a song at the start of the vid, awesome!
Haha thank you very much!
Looks great. Thanks for sharing , looks like I'm going to try one of these for myself.
Me too,looking for different decals.
Fantastic build. I have just purchased the same kit and looking at using photo-etch parts too. What colour and brand of model paint did you spray the wings and fuselage? I was considering using Alclad 2 Airframe Aluminium but I don’t think I want a polished finish; yours looks like the colour and finish I desire. Your assistance is much appreciated. Keep up the great modelling work 👍🏻
Thank you, I used Tamiya XF-16 flat aluminum and then testors dullcote as my finish. Tamiya will come out a little grainier (not as smooth) as alclad but it's easier to work with and more forgiving. If you want to try alclad they make some shades that are not as shiny as airframe that you might take a look at.
Substancially quite an outstanding job (joints filling apart as already remarked), nonetheless I could find some colours inaccuracies: wouldn' t push rods on cylinders be black painted? Also, though some jugs had cockpit green interiors (mostly razorbacks), pictures from the era show this was not the ordinary colour for p-47 and expecially bubbletop variants were a darker bluesh green. Again, the anti glare green on top of fuselage doesn' t look accurate (would be olive drab)
Beautiful. Museum quality.
+Cameron Little Thank you!!
She's a beauty!
Thank you!
I discover your channel today and it's a marvelous surprise. You have a new fan and...subscriber! :)
+Stéphane DAVID Thank you! I'll keep on building!
Nice build, trippy music.
Haha thanks man
Enjoyed your video but a question on technique: After weathering tires & such, did you overcoat (matt) using an airbrush or other means ?
Thanks, I used a rattle can to spray on Testors Dullcote for the matte coat. I think it makes for a good finish as long as you don't overspray out of the can.
The same kit as my Tamiya P-47M. Both kits contain the necessary parts to build the other version.
Très beau résultat ...Bravo +++
Merci!
Where did you get the photoetch parts from. And the gun emplacements, are hey part of they extras or in the kit
By that I mean the ammo belts etc because they looks excellent
All the photo etch was extra. The ammo belts are really nice and are part of Eduard kit 49198. I'm not sure if they can be bought separately from the gun bay assembly. I've got some other part numbers I used listed in the video description.
Awesome thanks. Great model came out the end!
Where is your spray booth? And what do you use to ventilate it
It's indoors. Just a cardboard box I cut up to be 3 sided. Theres unfortunately no ventallation so I just wear one of those cheap disposable face masks
Where do you get the brass components for the radical engine? Do they come with the kit?
I've only ever built revell
I bought it off eBay. The metal photo etch usually does not come with the model. The brand I used is Eduard so check out their website and other hobby store sites and search for parts that fit your plane. Shipping prices usually determine which website I purchase from.
Great build!! There is no doubt you are a talented modeler. I just want to make one point. I enjoy watching expert builders like you, do full builds, however, I wish your video was 10 to 15 minutes longer. I would have liked to see more "how you did that" and "weathering/photo etching ", on the cockpit. I'm sure the video was made for our enjoyment more than a how to and I absolutely enjoyed it, but I'm new to this and want to see more of the detail work.. With that said, I subscribed and keep up the good work..
+Brad White thanks for the compliment and suggestion. I'm getting ready to do a Sturmovik and I'll do a bit more of a "how to" when I use the photo etch and on the weathering.

Wonder what this would look like in Vietnam era paint scheme. Like the Skyraider.
will look epic for sure but theyll be nothing but target practice for MiGs
BEAUTIFUL JOB, WISH YOU HAD FILLED THE SPLIT IN THE LEADING EDGES OF WINGS FOR REALISM.
Same here, future builds will not have that issue.
Nice work what's the name of the first song
I cant remember but check the video description. I listed the songs there
What are you using to wipe of excess tamiya panel line wash
+AverageModeler Hi Im using Testors enamel thinner
Scale Model Assassin ive used the same , teators enamel thinner and it strips my paint down to the plastic.. the panel line wash soaks in to the gloss and paint .. hard to wipe off
+AverageModeler the part I left out is that I spray it with dullcote before I weather it and use the thinner. I think that's what's protecting my paint from stripping. I'll have to add a note on future vids lol
Scale Model Assassin i did it on on a dull cote too and same thing happened . Hmm some people use zippo fluid.. maybe i can try this method to see if it works. Hate to not use something i paid for.. it works ok when you wipe it off quickly but if it sits for a long time thN forget it.. its coming of with everything lol
+AverageModeler Ive never had an issue with enamel thinner but I do wipe it off pretty quickly...brush on a liberal amount with one q-tip end and then immediately wipe that bit off with the other end. I'm also using Tamiya primer under the paint so who knows, maybe that helps a little. My problems with dull/glosscote are when I spray too much on...you'll see when I put out my Ferrari video soon lol
Next time try with the landing gear up 🙂🤣
The seams on the wing leading should have been filled, the seams on the top and bottom should have been filled also. The aluminum paint was very grainy. Other than that a great job.
why sand all the detail off the instrument panel .then put the decals on a flat surface .....they go on a nice glossy surface with micro sol with no problem. ...I've built 5 of these p47s with out any problems doing this😆
+David Jones for this one I used a photo etch instrument panel instead on the decals provided. I sanded it bc the metal photo etch is thicker than a decal and I didn't want it sticking too far out. On other kits where I use the panel decals provided, I don't bother sanding and just lay them on as you described.
The gun bay is cool, but you need to work on the fundamentals. The seam work is awful, not trying to be mean, just honest feedback.
Yea I agree. Ive improved that aspect on my more recent builds.
Nice build but the music was realy annoying!!!
Lol I've gotten 50/50 reviews on the music selection. If it makes you feel better, my recent videos haven't been using electronic dance music
Wrong shade of green.
This was Major General Kepter's aircraft. The anti-glare panel was over painted to match the nose color.
Music sucks
lol oh well
this music fucking sucks give us a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol...Ive made some changes in music choices since that video
