  • This was our original rough version of the video (there are a few sound problems). To see our official submission for the Macy's Lip-Dub Challenge, click here: • Compass Academy - Macy...
And to learn more about Compass Academy, click here: • This Is Compass Academy
Compass Academy is a new project-based high school in Idaho Falls. We are unique in a lot of ways. We are a small, tight-knit community, with no more than 150 students per grade. Our classes combine two core subjects with two adult facilitators in the same room. We learn through real-world projects. And we focus on culture and life skills just as much as state-required content. This year at Compass, we spent our first three days of the school year building culture and school spirit by entering in the Macy's Lip Dub Challenge. Every part of the video was planned and created by students. Every student and every adult in the building participated. We planned and practiced for two days and then spent hours on the third day doing take after take until we got it just right. By the end, we were all exhausted, but everyone was ecstatic when they got to see the final result. And best of all, the students themselves worked hard to clean confetti, balloons, and poster paper from the building so our beloved custodian wouldn’t have to do it alone.
Some people might see this as a waste of school time, but everyone at Compass would disagree emphatically. Through this process, our students learned that accomplishing something you’re proud of requires a lot of hard work. They learned about the importance of revision to improve a final product. And through their participation, our students developed a fierce passion and loyalty for their school.
Since Compass is a magnet school and our student athletes play for either Idaho Falls High School or Skyline High School, our school pride probably looks a little different than it would at a traditional school. But then, everything at Compass looks a little different, and that's why we love it so much!
Compass Academy is only three years old, and we have built this school from the ground up. If we win the Macy’s Lip-Dub Challenge, we will use the prize money to fund several school needs, including a new marquee board in front of the school, live broadcasting equipment for our school news program, science lab equipment, and other technology needs. As we have our first graduating class this year, we also plan to allocate some of the money for school improvement ideas proposed by our seniors.
