Even though Beverly Sills chose to make much of her fine career in the USA for personal reasons, she was none the less a phenomenal world class coloratura soprano - more than that a great artist. She is sadly missed as is the great Signor Pavarotti.
!!! Favourited. BRAVI! What perfection from them both, I've never heard such fantastic high C#s from any tenor in my life! Fantastic performance from both of them.
I find it ironic that Sills added more ornaments and high notes to the reprise of “Ah sento o mio bell’angelo” than she did in the studio recording because usually singers like to do the daring feats in studio and play it safe in live.
both of them more volume in the upper range than most lyric voices (most tenors sound like they got kicked in the balls when they sing high. pav makes it sound easy and natural like it should be for someone with good technique)
It must be incredibly difficult to produce four C sharps in one night. Perhaps Bjorling didn't want to risk cracking, as Pavarotti rarely did in I Puritani (not badly, but occasionally on a C sharp, the note would break slightly).
Those are C sharps that Pavarotti sings here. Maybe Bjorling just didn't want to sing above the C constantly. Arturo is demanding in that sense, some tenors do this role with high Ds. Pavarotti still had a wonderful high C in 1979, he sang perfect Cs as Rodolfo at La Scala. He lost that glorious high C in the 80s, such a shame.
I suppose I don't have much room to talk as I can only hit a high Eb5 (but I'm a baritone lol) but it's not impossible. Most tenor leggieros can only go up to an E5 and the higher one's can hit an full F5. Although you're right, the passage area into head voice for tenors is about an octave below the F5.
Fastest voice in the West! Not only did Sills have a glorious voice in her prime, but she was also the best, the very best singing actress I have ever seen. In comparison, Maria Callas was a ham--corny and melodramatic with no great sense of physicality.
Yes, she sometimes showed off a bit too much (to say the least) in her agility and ability to sing intricate ornaments, adding so much fioriture and high notes that the beauty of the original melody becomes secondary in the singing. That's one of the only pet peeves I have with her, usually in higher coloratura roles like Elvira and Lucia (her 1st live performance of Lucia included an almost unrecognizable "Quando rapito in estasi").

A glorious evening - I was at this performance and it was super.
Pavarotti+Sills=perfection
Stunning, fabulous, adorable, bubbly Beverly!!!
This is fabulous.. Sills is grand, and it is why i love her, she is a great actress.. you understand every word too.
Stunning singing... stunning coloratura!
Strepitosa belcantista❤
They sound amazing together!
pavarotti que buen rendimiento, esos agudos brillantes y potentes.
Beautiful pairing of Pavarotti & Sills. Of course, Pavarotti & Sutherland wasn't too shabby either!!
!!! Favourited.
BRAVI!

Is it possible to see and "heard" such a WONDER today ????? NO , never again !!!!! NO NEVER !!!!!

SUPREME PERFORMANCE!
They're both wonderful. That F must be dangerous for a tenor to sing--but Pavarotti did it.
I agree. I have both. Although I dont like the cuts in this version.
Finalmente il Finale tragico
Those TRILLS!!!!! *drool!*
Sills. Amazing. Who chose that horrific tempo ?
Sills's first PURITANI if I'm not mistaken

Melody is lost in excessive ornaments. I like Sills in things like Manon and Thaïs but she ruines this beautiful finale

@@Homoclassicus its why i won't listen to her sing those roles. Her Thaïs is a thing of beauty
first time through is melody...2nd time through it's ornamented. it's bel canto!
