Sure, I enjoy watching ETA review expensive tech I can't afford in the same way that I enjoy watching videos about classic sports cars I can't afford. But, I discovered this channel thanks to his prepaid phone reviews (I'm still daily driving the Moto G7 Optimo Maxx he recommended three years ago) and my favorite videos on his channel, by far, are when he puts affordable stuff (either new and cheapish; or old and depreciated, but still capable like that Essential phone) through its paces. Videos like this one, and the Fire tab video, are useful to me because these are things I might reasonably consider buying in real life and he uses/tests them the way that I would use them. Just because something is affordably priced some reviewers get all elitist all of a sudden. But ETA seemingly takes all of his reviews seriously, no matter what price point the item is at, and I really appreciate that.
Totally agreed. I bought the 7" Onn tablet two years ago based on his review and I still use it. It's got a line down the screen now, but still works perfectly fine. I have a gamepad that I sometimes play emulated games with on it using RetroArch and it works as well if not better than the RPi to that end. Only paid 35$ because of a black Friday deal too.
say no more 👌👏👏
Nobody:
ETA Prime: “but the main thing I wanted to test on this little device is emulation.”
Na, its not only him.... Remember that guys playing doom on a canon ink jet? Or doom on the old photo cameras?! I test emulators since 20 years on every device i can get access to, since ... We can🤣 it got a bit boring with batocera btw😂😜 too ez☹️
The only reason why we should be buying cheap tablets is to use it as emulation devices. In fact, let's just say that most tablets should be used as such. 😉
@@alexn8345 you can use for xbox cloud gaming no problem
@@alexn8345 I've been playing FFT every so often. Great for when you're stuck somewhere for a while.
grabbed my little cousin a lenovo 8 inch tablet put every nes snes gba most ps1 games and a few n64 games on it hes 12 and now has every game i ever had as a kid and more in his pocket
This is an awesome video, very interesting to see what budget tablets can run.
If ONN really wanted to take on Amazon, they should have applied video over USB-C. The first budget manufacturer to include the feature will clean up, at least in the short term until others are forced to make it the default for phones and tablets.
that would assume that someone who's buying a budget tablet has a display with a USB C port, or has an adapter for such. Or uses their tablet for an external output at all. My 2-n-1 has USB C display out I think and I've never had a reason to use it.
These already sell out. Why would they add features?
You think that because that’s what you want (and apparently another 24 people, so far), but that doesn’t meant it’s what everyone wants.
Forget the naysayers. That would be a cool option and every phone and tablet should have it, period. It'd be useful for things they obviously lack the mental capacity to think of.
@@superkoopatrooper4879 thing is, even if you don't need it now, you will hate yourself if you are in a situation where it would have come in handy.
In the end it's just a framebuffer that needs to be send to a screen, nothing fancy that would need tons of chip real estate.
Love the review. The onn surf tablet looks great for emulation and for people looking to get into tablets for reading and daily use.
Love these things - the 8” gen 1 version was my first Android experience. Best $60 I've spent in a long time.
Do they play videos well? I'm thinking about buying one just for that.
@@trr5291 kind of a long story but bear with me. I spent a month in a hotel last year for some National Guard work but forgot to pack my laptop charger (it was a short-notice urgent kinda thing). I caught covid (like everyone else) so I was stuck in isolation in this hotel room with nothing but this tablet for binge watching shows I’d been putting off. In retrospect, it was awesome and I didn’t feel I was missing anything.
@@ConcealedCarrier I only want it for traveling. When we go to a hotel I always have to use my phone to watch things.
The unfortunate thing with tablets like these is that it'll probably only last a year or two before the usefulness degrades due to app updates. It'll run like garbage and have slowed response unless you never update anything in which case it might be a decent Ebook reader (as long as the apps remain viable) or lowgrade mobile gaming device so that you don't burn out your phone batteries idle gaming. I will admit the older emulators with a controller attachment might not be so bad if you can get it under 30 bucks on sale... it's basically a disposable tablet.
Agreed. Can't get the android web system app to update on my last gen tablet. Like you said, it's pretty much disposable now. I may just turn it into a system info panel for my PC.
I have a similar tablet and it preform well on Android 10 go edition but I get what you say
This isn't a problem on x86.
this is just ewaste being sold
If only there was an open and simple way to flash a standard OS onto, so that people could continue it and not have to be geniuses to do it.
I really like the Onn android box. I've been using it as my mobile media hub, and it's perfect for me.
thank you for the video! always good to see your videos and thank you for the time on testing all those device's performance!
can you include a test of how it handles multiapp or split screen apps, I had the onn 8 pro (1st gen or 2nd gen, I dont remember correct) and used it as a gps and youtube player since my car does not have a infotainment system and if the phone rings while I am using the gps I get very upset because I might lose a turn or exit, but sometimes that tablet would freeze or just lag a little bit which made it not suitable for that purpose, but before that I had a onn 7 2nd gen for a few days and that one felt better at the time which led me to assume that the 8 inch model would be better because of the "Pro" in the name, but that was not the case, now I am using a samsung tab a 2019 but it too big and too heavy for that purpose.
Thinking about getting this for my kids just so they have something to watch things on
Great review! I wish this device didn't have such an unnecessarily large bezel.
You are quite good at evaluating well spoken no negatives just realistic point of judgment 4 stars. Keep reviewing
This would be a brilliant purchase for anyone having young kids! Thank you ETA Prime 😀
Or older parents. 😊
This seems like the perfect size for ds emulation might pick one up just for it
Seems like this is a slightly nicer amazon fire 7, without the amazon skins and stuff.
I might actually pick this thing up.
Thank you. I'm new to computers. Helped me make a decision. Will this run Square with no problems?
I'm using last year's version of this tablet right now, and the problem has always been the RAM. Everything else on it's pretty good. Except this Google GO operating system, because some things are forced on you. It's excellent for everyday streaming, some Google Docs, email, online shopping, web browsing, or whatever you do on your phone but wished you could do on a 7in screen.
There's also a glitch in the Google security updates. When the OTS updates it turns into widescreen view and makes it very difficult to hit the button. You have to to tap it exactly pixel perfect to have it select and move on to the download process.
ETA Prime. Why was your PS2, and Gamecube emulation on Series X video set to private?
Perhaps Microsoft didn’t liked the video
Came here for this too. Anyway we can find that video archived somewhere?
Hey ETA. will you be doing an emulation test on the new M2 macs? Specifically the AIR. Also can you please push the devices to see their limits by raising the resolutions a bit more.
I'm fine with that performance. Dreamcast and psp with 0-1 frameskip on most games on a $60 tablet is pretty great imo.
what happened to your xbox emulation video you just released?
Thank you for this one.
I only payed like 70$ for the fire 10 refurbished I highly recommended anyone looking for a cheap tablet to pick that up over either 7in
This ^. I picked refurbished HD 8 2020 first for me and my mother, and they were brand new and excellent for the price, but after 3 months I bought two HD 10 tablets - full HD screen is so much better for reading manga and watching content, and CPU is slightly more powerful so it could handle x265 10bit encoding without issues (HD8 had problem with that).
The only reason to pick 7" now is probably some form of backup Android device for emergency. But then again, 60$ is too high for that kind of device. Oh and Android Go is just awful with multitasking (as much as I hate FireOS bloatware, at least it's optimized).
I got the previous generation and was really disappointed in it until I added a fast SD card. Just use it for FaceBook, weather, looking up things on the internet, and Solitare. My guess this tablet will run about the same as the previous version for what I use it for with possibly slightly less buffering on some internet sites.
Got this tablet for my birthday for school it is actually decent for basic use
This would likely be good for basic web, videos, and reading PDFs and such.
Did your video with retroarch emulation on xbox get deleted?
I was wondering what happened to the video, I was half way through the setup and closed the tab accidently. Now the video is set to private :(
Yeah I dont know why but I think Microsoft didn’t like that video
@@zyz6325 I dont think it was microsoft but rather Nintendo prolly when he was showing Game boy advance and gamecube Emulation. He said in the video to check out gamr13 channel in the video. It has the setup there as well
What about its other features? How’s the camera?
You addressed its gaming capacity wonderfully, but I am looking merely for a tablet with a decent camera and just to surf the internet.
Nice video man!😀👍👏 Do you have an idea why drastic performs so well on low spec devices (run it on a fire hd8) while desmume and melon ds are comparably weak on even strong pc?!
The magic of assembly
ETA, I was hoping you might make a video on the following: Which would be better for emulation: A Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 (now that PS2 on Android is a thing) or a Steam Deck?
We have an Tablet from Real supermarket with 512 MB RAM, 10" 1024x600 TN-screen. Its absolutly unusable and its 100$.
This Walmart is quite good.
thought about something like this for home automation... something to stick to the wall in a few places.
Hello man I love this tablet but I have a couple of questions, does this tablet have a SD card slot inside, if the internal storage is full for extra storage and 2nd questions, how do you get the sim card out of tablet? Thank you
Can you check openMW on these low end Android devices? I'm always curious how well it'll run. Such a good classic RPG.
I was surprised on this tablet which it can do decent performance in lowest areas for sure but for me I prefer going for a Samsung tablet, especially Tab S series. But I wish there were better cheap tablets which they can last for more than a year but you pay on what you get for.
That being said, at least ETA, you doing this shows you really care about affordability.
Maybe get the 10" for a e-reader you don't mind if someone grabs and runs off with it or a kid's 1st tablet. I wouldn't mind if if Samsung released a yellow color tab tho.
Dang. I want to see walmart make a new 10 inch with android 12.
hey did your new video explaining emulation on the xbox series x/s get deleted?
I feel like I added it to my paylist yesterday and can't see it today..
thank you
Im playing GBA, NES, SNES, Genesis, and some N64 games on RetroArch. Some games on PPSSPP stand alone. It supports wired controllers like 8bitdo and xbox 360
What people ought to look at is whether a version of Linux can be ported to this tablet. It might be a useful SBC substitute.
Of i lived in the us I'd get one to my daughter in a heartbeat
can you do a review of the Nokia T20, it seems to sit at a pretty good price to performance.
I'm hoping you do a video on how to root one of these. I'd like to install a proper Linux if that's even possible, if not at least a better version of Android, maybe with less bloat. From the thumbnail it looks like they don't still have the annoying walmart button, that's a good start.
Watching this on my Tab S9 hits different
I was wondering if the bootloader is locked. If not maybe its possible to put something like lineageOS on it. This might speed it up and would probably prolong the usefulness of it. Anyway it looks interesting especially when its dicounted.
Please can u test Asus Zenphone 9 . Looks nice and the price it’s not that bad. Thx great video for
Where did that cool red wallpaper come from?
The onboard graphics is what they should upgrade for this tablet.
Have you tested this with gamepass streaming? Does it have the standard audio glitches, etc?
Works fine
Seems like a great tablet for the price.
Wish you tested Streets of Rage 4 on it. If it could run that I might consider buying one.
@link4566 yes
Are there any decent tablets in this size without iPhone 3GS bezels?
I bought one of these (8" 2022 model) for my mother to replace her dying Nexus 7 (2013) tablet. It's a great replacement - basically zero bloat, can install all Google Play Store applications, long battery life, expandable storage via SD Card (I put in a 128GB Sandisk card), and a decently bright screen.
The two main cons I have are:
1. the speakers are fucking terrible - at max audio watching UA-cam or Netflix, it's basically inaudible
2. the screen resolution @ 720p is terrible - this really should have been a 1080p resolution screen
3. optional: the screen brightness could be a little better - it's fine, but it should be a little brighter
If Walmart can make an upgraded version of the Onn 8" 2022 model in a few years with better screen resolution and better speakers, it will be *the* best budget tablet on the market.
Here's hoping they release at least a few years worth of Android updates for these devices.
I saw earlier a video regarding xbox retail mode, it has been taken down?
Also is it still possible to play games like call of duty mobile or Apex on this device?
Honestly I was hoping to get information on if this has a gyroscope, accelerometer and compass sensor built in. Seems impossible to figure this out without just buying one
Wow, those bezels
I have those to but with black color
It would probably be good as a xcloud and gfn streaming device
The last best tablet I ever had was the Nexus 7. How does this compare?
,, was just thinking that ,, still have , and use my Nexus 7's .
Thinking of how much tech has changed since then also .
I remember being "wow'd" when the 2nd gen Nexus 7 got 2gig of ram and better screen .
Is the video on retroarch on xbox series x/s taken down, i am unable to find it. Please re-upload it
honestly not bad.... better then what i thought at least
Damn, that bezel THICC!
Why you deleted the xbox series x emulation video?!🤔
this would have been a perfect budget tablet if not for no twitch on android go
Why was the xbox retro arch on retail mode video taken down
I’m looking for a tablet just to read on. I use library apps as well as kindle and nook. I have a 7th generation kindle fire 8 and it’s ok, just a nightmare side loading and getting the other apps to work properly…..
I hate those USB-A to USB-C cables with a passion. You said it has a USB-C cable but can you actually charge with a straight USB-C cable from a USB-C port? Usually no. Usually has to be a USB-A port only.
60 bucks for this one new is ok .for some low end emulation like GBA ,some PSP ,ps1
And android games are a lot of good ones out there definitely running on this tablet
Wally bumps it up a smidge concerning their Onn Android Tablets the devices become a competitive product line; Walmart dropped the ball on this product's release this time.
Enough for basic task such as browsing internet, check your email and read some office documents
Why not ? Sadly not get in to Indonesia
I love my classic sonic D console.
I swear, they make those bezels gigantic-sized on purpose.
remind me of Asus nexus 7 tablet 2012
Is the gen 3 10.1 inch the same specs or better?
Does Audio skip on Xbox gamepass like it does on other lower end tablets?
I really miss my Nexus 2013. Should have kept it and not sold it. Can't find decent 7 inch tablets like that anymore.
How would hearthstone run on that?
I think I can finally replace my smart home remote made out of a jailbroken Fire 7 (7th gen) tablet with something more manageable and maintainable.
Thanks for this great review, could you please test out to see if it will run Dolphin emulator standalone or Retroarch core.
It can't. My Motorola phone has a Snapdragon 632, which is markedly more powerful than the Mediatek in this tablet, and it can barely run certain lightweight GameCube games in Dolphin. A good rule of thumb is if it struggles with higher quality PSP or Dreamcast games then GameCube/3DS/PS2 is going to be completely out of the question.
@@mattdavis9601 Thank you for the heads up!
@@brethbk69 also don't forget that the emulation on something with a adreno gpu will be better than anything else.
My sentiments are exactly the opposite. Even without stock android, the fire tablets are a better buy. While the Onn tablets do offer close to stock android, Walmart will never provide any security patches, let alone full OS updates. On the other hand, Although Amazon may not provide many full fire OS software updates, they do at least provide several years of security patch updates. That alone makes them worth the buy, even with the forked fire OS.
Glass screen or plastic screen? My last Onn 7 was plastic.
I would give both kidneys and possibly more for a modern, reasonably premium 7" tablet with good Lineage OS support. I suppose that's too much to ask, though.
I know how you feel. Shame Google half a$$e$ their ecosystem. The 8" Nokia T10 tablet is what I'll get.
Why doesn't these tablets come with 4 to 8 ram instead of 2? Isn't ram cheap now?
This tablet doesn't have pop-up ads like the fire tablet does it? Just looking for a cheap screen for my security camera.
I have the gen2 version, and never got any popup ads.
Can you do Beach buggy racing & Beach buggy racing 2?
can i ask you this:
can you play genshin impact and honkai star rail on this device
Does it plays video games good?
Could I know your dynamic screen wallpaper name?
Who makes a case for the 7" gen 3?
What about the 10in pro tablet?
Can i ask for your help with mapping a raspberry pi 2 with a ipac2 with button configuration
Does it Use 4gLte or 5Lte?
Can you screencast with this?
I have yet to be happy with any onn tech. Most breaks within a year.
So the Fire 7 doesn't have security updates?
9:00 When would the next major sale be? The audio is weird there
"Black Friday, but in between there..."
It is Back To School time so might be a small discount coming but being new tech I have doubts.
Not to be *that* guy who has to correct someone online that's wrong, but just because it's a 7" tablet doesn't mean it can't use a TB card. I could totally see myself loading this up with tons of mp4s and mp3 and a bunch of emulation games to have it as a total entertainment powerhouse. In other words, size of tablet shouldn't dictate the size of the storage.
Yeah onn tablets are pretty cheap, but i will say i prefer them over a kindle because google play is much better then amazon appstore.
I've been thinking of getting this as an e-reader! Do you think it would be worth it for that? I've been looking at alternatives since I have apps for reading mangas & such but reading on my phone or my Samsung tablet is a bit annoying when out in public.
What is the name of the 2D game tested after Among Us?
