The Bible is the embodiment of "let me run this through 20 different Google translations and then back to English" with the edition of each translator's own feelings and biases to fill in the cracks. To be honest I'm not sure we have any idea what the "first draft" of the Bible looked like at all. It's a book that gets far more interesting when you start to look at it more like the ancient book it is and less like the religious icon people make of it
and adding to that: the bible is so poorly written (considering what message its trying to send, which is being the be all end all to morality and life) that even people in the same church have disagreements about how to interpret specific verses and stories.
Okay, I'm not Christian, and I used to believe this, but quite honestly the Bible is actually surprisingly well preserved in terms of original text. You can read it in the original old Hebrew for the Hebrew Bible (what Christians call the "Old Testament") and in the original Greek for "the New Testament" or what I like to semi-jokingly call "Jesus Plus". Now there's still a lot of debate over how to translate certain words of course, and context will always be lost in any translation, especially without extensive background knowledge or a ridiculously foot-noted Bible about "well Hell is actually like 3 different words translated from the Greek, so may not be referring to a literal place in the afterlife." Or, in the Hebrew text, one really good example of the Hebrew not translating into English is when it says in the story of David and Jonathan that they made a covenant and "their souls were knit together", the Hebrew word here translated as soul means every aspect of a person--physical, spiritual, mental. So really it's not run through "20 different google translations and back into English" it's just that there's a lot of nuance in any translation, and you can never get the full flavor of the original language, and even if you could there would STILL be a lot of debate over what context and subtext there were to certain stories, verses, etc., because it's a religious text and this is a text that has been studied and debated for millennia. I mean, hell, there are Christians who believe it was the hand of God literally working through people who wrote the Bible, and must be taken literally, and yet there are still somehow contradictions and historical errors, while others take a more realistic take of people interpreting history and God and being fallible. Additionally, there is no "first draft" of the Bible because it's a bunch of books from Hebrew religious texts and then Jesus-related texts smashed together, and there are many different versions of the Bible in terms of what books are included, what books aren't, and some stories just, inserted hundreds of years later WITH that note. (One being the very famous "he who has not sinned throw the first stone"). You can't say one of these versions is more valid than another because they're different people making different choices of what to include, but you CAN say that those are still documents with original translations available even if we don't always have the "original scroll" or book for each of them.

I could not figure out what the Ragu complaint was suppose to be until the very last part. So I was actually happy when I found this video because I've known of this organization for awhile. As a big American Girl (doll) fan, unfortunately I've heard of them before. In 2009, the doll of the year, which is called the Girl of the Year or GOTY for short, had a companion friend that was homeless for a *brief* period of time called Gwen. Apparently, despite the entire company being founded on the notion of young girls being old enough to be taught real life stories both historical and contemporary ones, everyone was appalled at the portrayal of Gwen because (a) she was homeless and god forbid young rich children learn about homelessness. & (b) the reason she became homeless was because her crap dad left her with her mom. Basically, a bunch of conservatives, including 1MIL Moms, thought it promoted man-hating amongst young girls and launched a whole thing about how homeless moms should lose custody of their children and more BS... OVER A DOLL THAT WAS A *SIDE* CHARACTER They also struck yet again in 2021, this time with the GOTY of that year. The doll had two fictional aunts (yes the horror of the gays infiltrating a luxury doll brand) that she was staying with. Mind you, they were not her moms, she was just visiting them in Australia to help out on their wildlife preserve. IN A BOOK. This doll didn't get a movie, and you only get the books if you buy the doll and feel like actually reading Book 1. And there was a whole boycott of this doll from 1Mil Moms that American Girl responded to by basically saying "listen, we might be capitalistic, but we don't care about your money THAT much. Suck it up, we're not erasing the aunts from her storyline". Nice to know that these people have even smaller things to get upset over than dolls.

To be honest I'm not sure we have any idea what the "first draft" of the Bible looked like at all. It's a book that gets far more interesting when you start to look at it more like the ancient book it is and less like the religious icon people make of it
and adding to that: the bible is so poorly written (considering what message its trying to send, which is being the be all end all to morality and life) that even people in the same church have disagreements about how to interpret specific verses and stories.

Okay, I'm not Christian, and I used to believe this, but quite honestly the Bible is actually surprisingly well preserved in terms of original text. You can read it in the original old Hebrew for the Hebrew Bible (what Christians call the "Old Testament") and in the original Greek for "the New Testament" or what I like to semi-jokingly call "Jesus Plus".
Now there's still a lot of debate over how to translate certain words of course, and context will always be lost in any translation, especially without extensive background knowledge or a ridiculously foot-noted Bible about "well Hell is actually like 3 different words translated from the Greek, so may not be referring to a literal place in the afterlife." Or, in the Hebrew text, one really good example of the Hebrew not translating into English is when it says in the story of David and Jonathan that they made a covenant and "their souls were knit together", the Hebrew word here translated as soul means every aspect of a person--physical, spiritual, mental.
So really it's not run through "20 different google translations and back into English" it's just that there's a lot of nuance in any translation, and you can never get the full flavor of the original language, and even if you could there would STILL be a lot of debate over what context and subtext there were to certain stories, verses, etc., because it's a religious text and this is a text that has been studied and debated for millennia. I mean, hell, there are Christians who believe it was the hand of God literally working through people who wrote the Bible, and must be taken literally, and yet there are still somehow contradictions and historical errors, while others take a more realistic take of people interpreting history and God and being fallible.
Additionally, there is no "first draft" of the Bible because it's a bunch of books from Hebrew religious texts and then Jesus-related texts smashed together, and there are many different versions of the Bible in terms of what books are included, what books aren't, and some stories just, inserted hundreds of years later WITH that note. (One being the very famous "he who has not sinned throw the first stone"). You can't say one of these versions is more valid than another because they're different people making different choices of what to include, but you CAN say that those are still documents with original translations available even if we don't always have the "original scroll" or book for each of them.

that excerpt from the bible (romans 1:26-27) could be read as a condemnation of lust and adultery, more than homosexuality itself, but that’s a decision for the interpreter (re: you) to make. and even if you do read it that way, it’s still shading homosexuality - like it’s painting it as a greater form of lust and adultery than the hetero version. but that makes sense for a book written at a time when infant mortality was super high and you needed people to be making babies all the time. it’s the same reason mother teresa fought so hard against birth control of all kinds. and the same reason we have to fight so hard for women’s reproductive rights today. conservative christian advocacy groups only want one thing and it’s, uh… babies. it’s babies.

So I was actually happy when I found this video because I've known of this organization for awhile. As a big American Girl (doll) fan, unfortunately I've heard of them before. In 2009, the doll of the year, which is called the Girl of the Year or GOTY for short, had a companion friend that was homeless for a *brief* period of time called Gwen. Apparently, despite the entire company being founded on the notion of young girls being old enough to be taught real life stories both historical and contemporary ones, everyone was appalled at the portrayal of Gwen because (a) she was homeless and god forbid young rich children learn about homelessness. & (b) the reason she became homeless was because her crap dad left her with her mom. Basically, a bunch of conservatives, including 1MIL Moms, thought it promoted man-hating amongst young girls and launched a whole thing about how homeless moms should lose custody of their children and more BS... OVER A DOLL THAT WAS A *SIDE* CHARACTER
They also struck yet again in 2021, this time with the GOTY of that year. The doll had two fictional aunts (yes the horror of the gays infiltrating a luxury doll brand) that she was staying with. Mind you, they were not her moms, she was just visiting them in Australia to help out on their wildlife preserve. IN A BOOK. This doll didn't get a movie, and you only get the books if you buy the doll and feel like actually reading Book 1. And there was a whole boycott of this doll from 1Mil Moms that American Girl responded to by basically saying "listen, we might be capitalistic, but we don't care about your money THAT much. Suck it up, we're not erasing the aunts from her storyline".
