They should produce a male warlock in honor of Julian Sands to include with this. Anyway, A.I. art, while fine unto itself, will only cause problems going forth for those who abuse it. Creative outlets necessitate passion to remain viable. The subconscious evocation of hand drawn artistry is that it inspires onlookers to explore their own potential; reminding us that humanity can achieve remarkable things. The more society is trained to rely on computerized apathy as a source of fulfillment, the less emphasis will be placed the worth on personal interconnection; hence the danger of the proverbial Stepford Wife. If we're not challenged, we'll naturally gravitate towards whatever pleasure is most accessible - becoming functionally akin to field beasts. Theologically speaking; this is anecdotal evidence of why people will eventually allow Satan to brand them like livestock.
Great commentary, Ash 👍 Totally agree that this box art is completely questionable. It makes you think on Why, WTH, or WTF.... So here is my breakdown of the Good, Bad, Ugly, and Very Ugly Good: we are getting some more content, minis, tiles, different gameboard, possibly new design, and new quests... all still can be questionable until the reveal. Bad: we have seen this before with JOD.. lets not forget the first reveal box of a temple and pieces of minis on the box and then when they did the reveal. It's completely different from the first sightings of JOD.. I believe the marketing group did this and sat back watching all of us and laughing out loud. Just to get us hyped up. Ugly: This is what we are doing going back and forth without getting the 100% fact on what will be produced and sending out all communications in all forums of speculations that could be right or wrong. I have seen some not to nice comments being made, but we should not lose faith, and let's wait for the reveals before making the negative comments as " i will not support or buy from them anymore." Very Ugly: Post just seen on Reddit Heroquest. Comment that someone is trying to get more info on Wizards of Morcar will not be remake by Avalon Hill from a Facebook comment. I hope this will not be true and that someone, for some apparent reason, needs to start a rumor. I have complete faith that Avalon Hill will keep the HeroQuest fans motivated in their decisons and new expansions for the realm and forsee AH to complete all and give more in the near future.. Again A big thanks to Ash for being one of our voices out there and gathering all of our comments to send the messages out for everyone to read and hear. QUEST ON 🛡 ⚔️ 🛡 ⚔️ 🛡
A youtuber from Germany said that First Light is only a Starter box and not a Basic Box in his opinion. In the Tabletop Hobby is it sinilar in some Way.
I can agree. Although if you get First Light, you'll be able to pair it with any expansion. It'll look funky, but it'll have everything the core box has mechanically!
When I first bought hero quest, it was in Kmart, for $26.99. And then I got two expansions at Walmart for $14 each. This was around 1996-97. It was actually in stores!
No you’re right. I think it was more around 1994. I just remember the game was 26 almost 27 dollars and the expansions (kellar’s keep and return of the witch lord) and I thought it was all amazing. I had zero people to play it with but I bought it anyway.
There is actually an expansion that I'd really like to see: an ending, the demise of Zargon. The last exp, whenever that day comes, it would be great to get closure of sorts, tying a bow over all these story arcs and be a conclusion to an overall campaign.
Good thing I’m the one guy in the friend group with the main box and several expansions for my friends who are new to the game and want to give it a shot.
I saw! Ill address next BwodeCast, but that was very much like pouring gasoline on a fire to put it out. I'm afraid it made things a bit worse for them, as far as those who care about the art usage goes.
I expect that the price point will be around $50. Maybe we will get a printed neoprene map that is rolled up in the box. Upper Deck has done something like that recently with the newest core set offerings for Marvel Legendary. We have been assuming that the monsters on the cover are goblins but the scales might be a clue to indicate new enemies like kobolds or lizard men instead of goblins and orcs. The guess of the dragon is also solid. In any case, I expect that we will know soon as Gen Con is not too far away.
I suspect we will see a simpler (not sure how, but hey ho that's the world we live in) version of the game for new players. The veterans will maybe get the alt. sculpts from the Mythic set in the original colors.
Things it’s got to have to be compatible with expansion yet paired back as a minimum Dice set Treasure deck Easy spell deck (just damage spells) Potion deck And artefact Monster deck The board(smaller) 4 base hero’s 5open doors 2 closed Cardboard furniture tiles and secret doors, traps Pre generated character sheets Quest book It’s how they do the monsters is where I’m at a loss Maybe 2 of each type Goblin Orc Skelton Zombie Mummy One of bigger sculpts Abomination Dread warrior Gargoyle Dragon
On the other hand, the Instagram post might just be Avalon Hill trying to get ahead of the leak, and they didn't have a final version of the cover to present to us. It's weird that they didn't just say "cover art not final" if that's the case, so I find it less likely, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt :)
I still don't see how the entire base game system can come in a box that small but we'll just have to wait and see with the reveal. However, if it comes with figures for all the named characters then I'm sold.
@@AshQuest Yeah Kessandria for sure would be amazing to have. I'd still also love to get a Sir Ragnar, both prisoner and in his prime forms. If first light doesn't include figures for the named characters then I'll probably have to go the etsy route that I'd been holding out on.
I have so many questions: - Does it come with a different board? - Does it come with different rules? - Does it come with additional models? Existing fans might buy this for this reason only. - Is this maybe a single campaign adventurer, featuring only the barbarian, dwarf or elf? (I cannot imagine wizard only.) - Is this a foreboding of Avalon Hills having declining sales and this is their attempt of trying to open HQ to a wider audience? I hope not.
Hasbro does not care what you think or the fans think. The mud has hit the fan in the D&D community. This is the third time they have gotten busted for using AI art in D&D. People are canceling their subscriptions and leaving Wizards of the Coast, a Hasbro division, in droves. Too many people are claiming that the Talisman 5th Edition looks AI. You can take up for Avalon Hill all that you want, but it is not looking good in Hasbro. They are scurrying to do damage control. I guess they should have listened to their fans.
They didn’t bring it back cause they loved it, there was a kickstarter in Spain for the company who owned the rights in that region - hasbro caught wind and saw the fan base cash… the kickstarter continued in Spain but changed the name to something like tseuquest… hasbro then pushed to reproduce the game in other regions. follow the monies 😂 I still love it though, I had the first Uk release as a kid
We're all pretty aware it had to turn a profit to come back, love it or hate it -- but Avalon Hill knew the game and had some of the original creative on board to support the re-release. Hasbro can easily be thought of as a huge soulless corporation but their specific subsidiary put in charge of actually making the game had a great rapport with the HQ communities throughout their run (right up until the layoffs). The care they had for the game shows in how it was handled IMHO!
Oh yeah, I’m not saying hasbro are evil or anything, but I don’t think they took initiative to rerelease until the Spain kickstarter. I tried to back it but then hasbro took it on instead of the Spanish company. I think they sort of woke up to the opportunity. Kinda like being poked when they’re not looking?
I'm thinking it's their way of doing Advanced Heroquest, hopefully. Then we would have two ways of playing Heroquest again. Then the AI generated art would be funny with generated dungeons, a hint at that maybe.
They can make and ship more of these quickly and lightly, and stack them on shelves alongside the expansions. So a smaller cheaper SKU that is more appealing to retailers and new players, and parents as its cheaper!!!
That was my thinking too, standies and a paper map. If they are allowed to use the content of the japanese version of classic hq, it might feature some of that stuff, like the magic for example.
I think this product will be a net positive for the Hero Quest community. Even I, someone who grew up on the Milton Bradley version of the game, struggled to justify buying the game at its $135 MSRP. I finally got it for $64 through Amazon, but the fact that I waited for such a huge sale despite being in the target demographic indicates that others might feel the same way. It's an intimidating cost for a game that the average consumer isn't sure they'll enjoy.
It feels to me that their parent company wanted something you could put on the store shelves a little bit cheaper and so bye early 2023 they had a working prototype maybe they even wanted to get it out by Christmas 2023. They got tested then they had the layoffs and so, they’ve spent the last eight months getting this ready for release and just had a kind of slap on a cover.
Two things to unpack here for me. I'm all in favor of simpler, cheaper and smaller demos of larger, more complicated products. My gateway into a life of D&D and roleplaying in general was the Dungeon boardgame followed almost immediately by the Purple Basic D&D boxed set. This is a sound business decision and I love the concept. But obviously owing to past experiences, I'm biased. As for AI art being used in any product being produced by a large corporation.... I hate it and it needs to not be happening. Regardless, great video and thanks for putting this out there!
It might just be a miss due to just another starter box. I will wait and see what is in the box first otherwise it would be just new quests. New minis does not mean different monsters/heroes.
Hey Ash, Scotland here🏴👋🏻 I had this and Space Crusade when I was a kid and I was furious when my folks gave them away deeming me 'too old' and 'didnt play it anymore' So when this was re-released Ive preordered EVERYTHING. The only thing I dont have was those dice and mat set that only seemed to be a U.S release, fk knows why? This first light set, im confused as to what is inside as it CANNOT be the full game. It must be like Warhammer where they do a starter set and if you dig it you can go for the full game system. With it being a beginner set it may have new quests that the main system DOESNT that are fresh to us but scaled down for beginners, either way ill still be buying it. But its speculate city right now. Im def down for new fresh sets but I think this is a cost cutter to get new nerds in. And aye the A.I generated box is really crumby. Im not buying it human art, its def A.I sh*t. Keep up the good work lad, all the best from 🏴
As a fan who had the original as a child and backed the crowdfunding for the new version and has bought all the new expansions & character packs I feel this product isn’t for me… but I’ll likely buy it regardless. That said I completely understand the business reasons for a product like this and if it brings in new players who help make future releases more viable then I’m all for it.
RE: The use of AI - it’s extremely disappointing and I’ll likely still buy it but under protest and would prefer it not to be used again going forward especially not for creating quests and writing game content.
Hey Ash, I have a question that probably has been answered before. I have the entire HQ games, all expansion included. My team has yet to be able to play all of the entire core set because of reasons, they are eager to start the expansions all of them. But seeing the Quests for the big expansions where they include a new hero, they clearly add the first 3 quests as a solo mission to include the new hero with the party or sorts. My question is how to start each expansion with the team that started the core quests, in those solo missions do I just include the entire party? I know you can start the quests as however you liked, but a good way to go thru them in a good order?
Those are, so far, just the Frozen Horror and mage of the Mirror expansions - you can use the solo quests to "catch up" a single hero but if ibwas zargon I'd let them breeze through them as a group. The rest of the expansion is pretty tough and the boon of having three easier quests would balance things out, in my opinion. I'd also caution you to play frozen horror later than sooner, it is brutal unless you take full advantage of hiring mercenaries, and even then...a lot of them are going to be felled!
@@AshQuest Thanks a lot for the info! Im running it with the expansions for leveling you mentioned in your channel. I just ordered the 3rd one and its on its way. Also, Im letting more than 4 players at the time, around 6 max and because of it I pumped up all difficulty before any of them where lvl 1, so yeah its gonna be hard
I wonder if this will be a prequel story line, origin of the four main heroes before the Test of Trials quest 1 of the main game. That would still set us veteran players with new game and expansion to add so they don’t isolate us out from buying.
My major concern about this is , will they follow this cheaper model for further expansions ... another issues they tease these expansion/ new content so far from releasing it that buy the time it comes out we are looking to the next one ... also it looks like we wont get any other expansions this year!!! And AH / hasbro you want to make money 💰 release the dread dice pack in Europe!!! And really wizard's and dark company could be just reprinted with a few tweaks!!!! And if though is have them ... i would buy them again !!!!!
I have stated in the past that id like a budget friendly edition like this but I do worry it may be to much like the original game given it appears to have the same 4 heros as the core game on the box cover. I'd prefer new heros but if they feel they must introduce players to the original 4, I at least hope they give us alternative scripts as you want people to feel like they get something new if they upgrade to the original core game. Hopefully it at least has new enemies & quests. I also hope this is concept art & not the final box given the complaints I keep hearing about the box art.
15:31 is it a miniature Gamesystem that is intended to be played by in game monsters/heroes….[ hero opens door & interrupts morcar DM’ing a heroquest gaming sesh against Zargon, grimdead & mentor. 😉
As now AH revealed a name of the artist (whatever he really did), I wonder... as I am not fluent in english, would it be any nuance in the announce of AH about the covert art that leaks this art cover is a fake and that in GenCon a new brand new human made (even with AI help) meaningfull as the arts were is revealed ? :s
This has the feeling of an idea passed down from on high from "corporate". Poorly thought out and no one cares enough to give it any love or care. Hope I'm wrong.
Let's not forget the cost of the new HeroQuest core box is not based entirely on its components, but rather that it was imagined as a niche product with an extra high markup (a fact I know sends some fanboys a sputtering). But now with its success and all the expansions they've made, they're now at cross purposes with themselves, they're selling less and making less because the price is too high to buy in. They can't really put out a new product that steps on the current price everybody paid, it's got to be toned down, but if you marked it up like they do Risk, you could put a lot of stuff in that box. And at $50, a paper mat and standees might sound reasonable to people who spend too much time looking at Games Workshop products, but that's a high price board game to parents, so it can't look chintzy to them, it has to have some value. So I'm curious as to just what will be in the box to make all that work. I haven't seen the sourcing on the rumors to know if they mean anything.
I still think this is place holder art they distribute to stores for pre-order purposes. Just like the weird Jungles art that a few sites had prior to the actual reveal. Until I see a physical box with this art, this is a place holder. I think there's a place for AI art to be used, especially internally and to get something done ASAP for a place holder, and so long as they DO end up using an actual artist for their final product, I don't see why people get so upset. In a world without AI art, this would be a box with an X on it that says "Image coming soon" and I don't think anyone is better served by that. All that being said, if this IS the final art, I'll shrug and buy it anyway because it's HeroQuest. I have a TON of ideas of what SHOULD be in the box (to aid new players and enhance what old players already have) but I guess we'll just wait and see.
It must be playable with what's in the box, so either a smaller board, or a thinner original board. It clearly has the original heroes, probably the same sculpts. Original rulebook, and maybe half the original monsters plus the same cards. Obviously nothing here for current players. So it must have new quests, which is the only thing that will get me to buy.
I rather like the mention of it having roleplay elements. The only real streamline I can think of is combining searches into one action. Some homebrewers have done this when their players found it too lengthy to use an action to search for traps every room.
I bet it has cardboard standees, which will bring the cost down a huge amount. maybe a Sheet with Equipment like the original had, instead of the seperate cards, and you dont really need monster cards with the screen.
would like to see a video on all the quests that didn't make the quest jam i.e. the disqualified quests and the reasons wye and are they still playable
I believe this set has it's origins in a corporate desire to create a larger audience for the game. They seem to be trying to get people with a cheaper buy-in and wider exposure on retail shelves. I'm all for that. I will definitely buy this, regardless of AI art. As sad as it would be to have AI art throughout the game, it would be much worse if they stopped producing content altogether. Just my opinion.
More likely to see a paper map. AI art was probably a decision so they could make more profit since art and story is probably their most expensive thing to make in the game. Whether driven by Hasbro or Avalon Hill that's the question.
The AI box art doesn't bother me, aesthetically speaking. The part about it that does bother me is that it's putting a human artist out of a job and HeroQuest art done by real people is pretty legendary. That said, I was hoping First Light would be a prequel to the base game and not just a more affordable repackaging of it.
It's for people who might be hesitant to drop 100 bucks on a board game they haven't played. Having a lower priced introductory base game will help bring more people into the hobby, and a smaller box/ lower price will also encourage more retailers to stock it.
That's all there is to it. Don't have anything else to say.
Wait you mean there is a less than $135 entrance fee??? fml 😢

seeing what celphalofair did to gloomhaven with jaws of the lion. AH is smart to release something similar to it for entry level and people who can't drop a lot of money for the main system.
Great commentary, Ash 👍
Totally agree that this box art is completely questionable. It makes you think on Why, WTH, or WTF....
So here is my breakdown of the Good, Bad, Ugly, and Very Ugly
Good: we are getting some more content, minis, tiles, different gameboard, possibly new design, and new quests... all still can be questionable until the reveal.
I have seen some not to nice comments being made, but we should not lose faith, and let's wait for the reveals before making the negative comments as " i will not support or buy from them anymore."
Very Ugly:
Post just seen on Reddit Heroquest.
Again
A big thanks to Ash for being one of our voices out there and gathering all of our comments to send the messages out for everyone to read and hear.
In stores that late?
@@82fdny97 I’m thinking more about it and you’re right- it would have been before that. Probably 94.
No you’re right. I think it was more around 1994. I just remember the game was 26 almost 27 dollars and the expansions (kellar’s keep and return of the witch lord) and I thought it was all amazing. I had zero people to play it with but I bought it anyway.
@@TheStuffandthings I got in 91 I think
There is actually an expansion that I'd really like to see: an ending, the demise of Zargon. The last exp, whenever that day comes, it would be great to get closure of sorts, tying a bow over all these story arcs and be a conclusion to an overall campaign.
I think it's a good addition to introduce new players to the system. But not as interesting as the other expansions for the veterans.
Found your channel and subbed yesterday because I was looking for new Heroquest stuff. And now this.... Colour me curious....
THERE IS A NEW COVER (thank goodness)
It will most definitely have flat pack DreadVeil di that has eerie fluorescent glows of colour drawn on.
Good thing I’m the one guy in the friend group with the main box and several expansions for my friends who are new to the game and want to give it a shot.
The Zargon!
This sounds like a reboot of the reboot. I think we're looking at the end of HeroQuest again.
I truly hope not, but you aren't the first to suggest this or something similar.
I don't think so, if they want to introduce the game to more players is because the made more contrnt in near future.
What if... it is a "Dark Company" style re-release? The same basic set but with added missions as in the 1992 edition...
I can say I will be waiting for them to release way more content before I decide if I’m getting this.
Just seen on IG that Avalon Hill have put up a post to address the art. They are crediting Clark Mitchell for the art.
I saw! Ill address next BwodeCast, but that was very much like pouring gasoline on a fire to put it out.
I'm afraid it made things a bit worse for them, as far as those who care about the art usage goes.
I think this is great. An easy buy in option for new players.
Yeah I really want the perpetual darkness hope it's that
Things it’s got to have to be compatible with expansion yet paired back as a minimum
Dice set
Treasure deck
Easy spell deck (just damage spells)
Potion deck
And artefact
Monster deck
The board(smaller)
4 base hero’s
5open doors 2 closed
Cardboard furniture tiles and secret doors, traps
Pre generated character sheets
Quest book
It’s how they do the monsters is where I’m at a loss
Maybe 2 of each type
Goblin
Orc
Skelton
Zombie
Mummy
One of bigger sculpts
Abomination
Dread warrior
Gargoyle
Dragon
On the other hand, the Instagram post might just be Avalon Hill trying to get ahead of the leak, and they didn't have a final version of the cover to present to us. It's weird that they didn't just say "cover art not final" if that's the case, so I find it less likely, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt :)
I like that take.
its always a good thing to get new people to play the greatest game ever made
I still don't see how the entire base game system can come in a box that small but we'll just have to wait and see with the reveal. However, if it comes with figures for all the named characters then I'm sold.
I've been saying that I would really like kessandria..
@@AshQuest Yeah Kessandria for sure would be amazing to have. I'd still also love to get a Sir Ragnar, both prisoner and in his prime forms. If first light doesn't include figures for the named characters then I'll probably have to go the etsy route that I'd been holding out on.
I have so many questions:
- Does it come with a different board?
- Does it come with different rules?
- Does it come with additional models? Existing fans might buy this for this reason only.
- Is this maybe a single campaign adventurer, featuring only the barbarian, dwarf or elf? (I cannot imagine wizard only.)
- Is this a foreboding of Avalon Hills having declining sales and this is their attempt of trying to open HQ to a wider audience? I hope not.

@ thank you for answering. Much appreciated
That's why I keep saying I wouldn't be surprised if they give us the witch Lord, sir ragnor, or mentor.
I'd predict the miniatures are replaced by plastic standing picture pieces
This is AWESOME, and YOU'RE AWESOME
Hey Ash, Scotland here🏴👋🏻
I had this and Space Crusade when I was a kid and I was furious when my folks gave them away deeming me 'too old' and 'didnt play it anymore'
So when this was re-released Ive preordered EVERYTHING.
Keep up the good work lad, all the best from 🏴
I would really love a reprint or update of dragonstrike through the heroquest brand :)
I payed $14.99 for first edition and $6.99 for each of the 3 expansions back in 1999.
I like to see the cards skill for the dwarf and barberian
the plot thickens!
Does the board fold up more? How would a smaller board be compatible with expansion?
It's just gotta...unless the whole thing will be supplied modularly
I wish they would make a necromancer class for players
Will it have dread dice, a dwarf presentation with a tomb & the heroquest card game?
Is this the ‘2025 revision’ that was rumoured?
Almost assuredly so.
This has the feeling of an idea passed down from on high from "corporate". Poorly thought out and no one cares enough to give it any love or care. Hope I'm wrong.
I hope so too. Low expectations but high hopes for what's inside.
I wonder if it will include a plank quest book
As small of a chance as it may be now that they have already officially shared it, I still REALLY hope its still a proxy image 😢
Only very wrong about it not being official. Your analysis of the box art was spot-on.
HeroQuest base in Canada is $189.99..So here is hoping it is cheaper.
Wizards of Zagron! The best expansion is still not revealed 😢
What makes me nervous is the cardboard standees. I will stop buying expansions if they go the Gloomhaven route.
Confirmed: Zargon is an AI machine!
The final product maybe different from this picture.
Also Ash have you seen the I.G comments on the First Light post? They are getting SAVAGED for the A.I boxart. Fanbase is united✊🏻
Good.
"We've murdered our friends in The Trial" ahhh good ol memories of Fun :)
I remember it like it was last Tuesday.
...Wait, it was.
I will buy as a collector anyway
Hmmm… whatever it is, HQ cannot possibly more streamlined I don’t think to attract younger players. First HQ I’m not planning to buy at this point.
I rather like the mention of it having roleplay elements. The only real streamline I can think of is combining searches into one action. Some homebrewers have done this when their players found it too lengthy to use an action to search for traps every room.
If this is supposed to attract people to the game, they should definitely have bothered to pay an artist!
I bet it has cardboard standees, which will bring the cost down a huge amount. maybe a Sheet with Equipment like the original had, instead of the seperate cards, and you dont really need monster cards with the screen.
Good video as always Ash
I'm still gonna buy it, but that box is gonna get shoved to the bottom of the stack.
And still no Advanced Quest version.
would like to see a video on all the quests that didn't make the quest jam i.e. the disqualified quests and the reasons wye and are they still playable
I bought the base game last week from Amazon for $66. So your not saving a ton if priced like an expansion, but yea I get it.
It's Portal for Heroquest.
Ooooohh I'm interested
More likely to see a paper map. AI art was probably a decision so they could make more profit since art and story is probably their most expensive thing to make in the game. Whether driven by Hasbro or Avalon Hill that's the question.
If only they could make the app available in my country.
Just checked and it turns out it is available 🥳
To me, Hero Quest Cover always look like mobile games 😢😢😢😢
"Proud to announce HeroQuest: AI Edition"
They're in the business to make money so they have to cut corners somewhere.
