I remember seeing Nigerians in church. They were so full of life and energy. The women were so colorful in their Sunday dress. Their songs were incredible. It was incredible. Nigerians are great. I met a lot of Nigerians in Korea and Saudi Arabia. Same thing, very much full of life, ambition and energy. The energy is contagious. Welcome to the USA. Respect.

If they are so successful and educated, they should help the Nigeria!,a failed state in a terrible state, They do not support their own as one never heard of the wealthy helping those less fortunate . to be honest, l find them loud and very aggressive ., selfish and self centered, Especially the women!!

@@sylviamawudoku Why should they help the country that was corrupted by their leaders who turned their backs on them? They left for a reason. It's like expecting somone to send you money after you steal from them. Why do you have these weird thoughts?

@sylviamawudoku please suggest how we should help. Do you know how many Nigeria immigrants who went back home to visit, start a business, or participate in politics but never returned because they were either kidnapped, killed, or duped? If your wicked political class don't fix it, they and their children will be sacrificed one day. It's called karma.

The reason why as you call, ' weird thoughts ' is because I have seen Nigerians behavior in London, as l am Born and raised in London. They don't talk, to each other, but tend to shout at each other, , they mock people with disabilities, lack sense of compassion, especially people who are PWAs, people here find them aggressive angry and very argumentative , which puts people off. Just because what l say is in ' conflict ' with your opinions, l am branded with the label weird thoughts like you, l am just putting My, and l have spoken to many people point of view, regarding Nigerians . they are. Notorious regarding fraud of benefits and other scams etc in the UK, and NO, I AM NOT REPEAT NOT SAYING ALL NIGERIAN ARE FRAUS AND SCAMMERS, . I wanted to support a NGO that helps People with disabilities, and could not find a fund raising organizers whoi are banked linked in Nigeria, when l inquired As to why, l was told that due to the notorious reputation of Nigeria noeone want to 'trust ' Nigeria etc. I was even told that a Nigerian passport is viewed with suspicion! therefore, if you think l have weird thoughts, then you need to contact the official UK institutions as well. Yes, it is hard to hear , but black people are sometimes their own worst enemy!!

I am not Nigerian myself but my encounter with them is that they are very driven and high IQ individuals. I do not think Its the top one percent being picked. If those in the poverty line would be given a chance they would be just like the ones we see here. And without the education ofcourse they would not be picked as highly skilled. In a comical note, - "Notice how even those who actually dupe other are very clever with out and always tend to get away with alot" . :D I have always told people Nigerians are very clever and we have alot to learn from them..... Look up inventions by nigerians in addition to overall Black inventions....

I disagree, these individuals who make to the USA come from families who have money in Nigeria 🇳🇬. The poverty is great in Nigeria and the corruption from the government is great as well. No steady electricity no running water in quite a few homes, where they have to go out and get their water or pay to have it delivered to them. I'm not saying they are not driven and they do not work hard. But don't have them paint your home it us done half azz and sloppy, even when it comes to the building of their homes.

Hey! Sharwama pls stop, they're not all left, we African/Nigerian are the one loaded with the %100 undiluted fact when it comes to our story; Prof to this lady & i doff my hat for her with this fabulous documentary about Nigerian immigrant in the United State; but notwithstanding" i still disagreed with some of her point of view in this short documentary, her narration was somehow off the real chart which is alway baffles me about some people is this their mentality of constantly thinks that they know something about us in Africa/Nigeria more than us the real people of the land, bcos their story/narrative about us sometime somehow do no justice to us & at the end of the day will harm us more rather than good; Just like my brother Mr Emeka said, i personally notice some flaw & misconception in this narrative such as 1. Brain Drain or the Best Brain left propaganda, 2. poverty & illiteracy level statistics are not always true but false; 3. Talking or making documentary of most successful African/Nigeria descent in the diaspora without at all or like %90 plus credit to where it due etc is nonsense; 4. It's an insult to assume or acclaimed that the money they're sending home building Nigeria is like limiting the home base skills & ability in developing Nigeria; Whereas it's vise versa' we have so many more most highly educated with very brilliant/IQ brain, we still have so many more of richest/wealthiest among the world level in Nigeria & all across Africa than those small percentage that she was comparing with those their masters in Nigeria its an insult & BS; we have more bigger & most successful entrepreneur/businesses owner that doing so great in that country who're much more better than those one in the diaspora/foreign land; u will never c such people leaving Nigeria or Africa for any long time adventure or relocating to second world slavery lifestyle in a foreign land, when u c them maybe on business trip/connection or just for vacation; MAY GOD CONTINUE TO HELPS/BLESSES NIGERIA; MAY GOD CONTINUE TO HELPS/BLESSES AFRICA WITH ALL ITS INHABITANT. tbh I don't agree that the top 1 percent of us come to the states! I think in Nigeria itself we still have tons of brains and highly intellectual people; however, things like education strikes, lack of job opportunities and of course corruption are what will keep hindering us from progressing. Nigerians in the diaspora just have a different drive because we know where we are coming from and we know that FAILURE is NOT an option!! Love being a Nigerian and hope to help rebuild things back home!! We push one little step at a time!!

Even there are some great numbers of successful people too in Nigeria whom was educated in Nigeria and achieved success there. They made it seem like Nigeria does not have good education. This question is so multilayered. Every Nigerian that I’ve met have been in their nations top percentage of earners. So they’re only sending the best and brightest here. It’s also a way for a white supremacist system to hold up a group of melanated people and say “look our melanated Americans are just lazy and don’t want it as bad.” I respect them as a people but let’s not act like all blacks have access to the same things they do. It’s not their fault, so the anger shouldn’t be directed towards them. But as I said in the beginning this is a multilayered question. That’s really rooted in white supremacy.

I also understand you appreciate ethnics who are more subservient and don't celebrate their successes but Nigerians regardless of tribe are not that way. We are and will always be filled with glory. When you see them in the next twenty years you will be amazed. That is who we are, circumstances can't stop us from achieving our goals and we bend the neck of obstacles, we make challenges cry out for help in a bid to succeed. That is why we excel in all spheres of life. So you cannot ridicule our achievement by showing villages and claiming they are poor. And that only the rich have the opportunity to make it to USA and get to be successful. Yes we have bad leaders but that will never stop an ambitious Nigerian from achieving his Purpose. So get that right.

"Brain drain" isn't a bad thing if your country is heavily overpopulated.
Actually it is a blessing in disguise.
A real crisis we have right now is unemployment and overcompetitiveness.
The more people moving out of highly overpopulated regions, the more jobs and opportunities for everyone else.
At the same time, the best minds can become wealthy in foreign lands, then in later years, they will support back their mother lands or mainlands in the future.
A good example would be "Bamboo Network" by the Chinese in Southeast Asia.

Opulence, narrow elitism and crass materialism coupled with glam in the americas is not success - I wrote elsewhere about the difference between the African and Asian outlook, and even the South American diaspora.
To be short, as Africans and the diaspora we can easily be self-inflicted with the curse of the superficial, aspirational optics, flaunting any megre success, having limited or no humility, nor the inclination to have long-term strategic wealth-building solidarity - not to forget our ever-present cryptonite in the form of tribal identities and outlook...when we start building global industries, take ownership and control of Africa's mineral resources, and build industries to elevate Africa's economies in order to change the life circumstances of Africans everywhere, then we're on the path to success. Anything less, is optics and superficial.
Co-opting ourselves into other nations' success dream may have an expiry date or limitations. Enjoy it while it lasts....hopefully we do get to maturity where we start to think, plan and act strategically like the Asians whose plans run into 50 to 100 yrs into the future and not just the immediate, for myself and my clan.

First of, Nigerians in Nigeria are still doing well despite the circumstances. In fact, the best talents in tech, entertertainment, enterpreneural drive, best graduating students e.t.c are still in Nigeria until they opt for other options outside. We're calling on ados/ Fba (hate gangs) to face their problems and leave Nigerians alone. The hate is real because these people look for immigrants to harrass, trample on, because Nigerians don't fit that bill, they're on hate mongering, divisive tactics against Nigerians. Again, many of the most successful Nigerians still reside at home regardless of the circumstances atm but we shall overcome it nevertheless. Nigeria is focussed on itself, Africa.

so are we still celebrating Nigeria or what? no one leaves their country if its honey and milk. Nigeria has a lot of rich educated hardworkers and also has a lot of scammers and drug peddlers. As an african in africa I will tell you the whole continent is improving but the next two generation will never see the benefits. too many powerful enemies abroad(asians and the west are not gonna give up power just like that) and within (tribalism, francophone house slave countries, foreign religions of islam and christians).

I am Nigerian living in the USA and we are all driven. Our parents see education and good home training as the best gift they can give to us. In my family alone, most of us are PhDs and we spend all we can to get the best education we can. To be honest even the regular person on the streets of Nigeria values Education more than anything else. Best believe that the most talented Nigerians are still in Nigeria. Our drive is on a different level.
Our family structure, and our sense of community provide the support we need to succeed anywhere. We are also never distracted by the noise cos it’s all about the big picture for us. I feel blessed to come from Nigeria cos all my experiences have made me more driven with resultant success.

One MAJOR factor that was missed out here was the NIGERIAN/BIAFRAN CIVIL WAR. My late father who in 1967 moved on a USAID scholarship to study his post graduate degree told me that he was "enticed" with many of his then contemporaries to remain behind because of his intelligence. We are from the South Eastern part of Nigeria. He and many young bright students from that area of his generation were told by their hosts to remain behind, because of the war situation of their locality that period. Many remained behind and became part of the American institution, working in NASA and many top secret U.S. government agencies. He was one of the few that decided to come back home and he settled in the Western part of Nigeria, which was not as ravaged in the war as the east and built his career in Nigeria's Premier University..becoming Nigeria's first Professor of Soil Chemistry. So the war also cause a generation of Nigeria students to remain behind, at least for a period..Great video, I must commend.

Nigeria has a 63% poverty rate, 47% graduate from High School (secondary school) and only 7% has college degrees. African American has have poverty rate of 18%, 90% graduate from High School and 26% from college. The brain drain of Nigeria's mostly middle and upper classes, like that of other "Model Minorities," over a number of decades is what led to the success of Nigerian immigration in the US and the UK. Except if you simply compare immigrants from Nigeria to the middle and higher classes of African Americans, in which case African Americans would statistically outperform them, it would be illogical to statistically compare them to the entire African American community.
