IMO the beginning of the end of the good matchmaking experience can be tracked to one single moment and that was when xbox live got party chat. I played halo 2 for like 10k+ hours and tons of mw2 as well because every lobby was a new group of PEOPLE. Yes, some of those encounters were...unpleasant BUT the ones that weren't are some of the best times I've had with games in my entire life. Being able to load into a 4 v 4 match of halo 2 and have all 8 people on comms like 70% of your matches was a wonderful experience and it helped put the toxicity into perspective. Now, the only people in public chat of non highly competitive modes are people too abrasive to have friends to be in a discord call with. What is it that keeps people playing one online game over another? Today, it's sunk cost, but traditionally, it's because their friends play it. If you want to make a good multiplayer experience, create one where you can make friends. They will keep you logging in day after day much better than log in bonuses and battlepasses. Still, the ability for any group of friends to immediately remove themselves from the public voice channel is something that can't be undone and just has to be worked around.

Another fun video to watch with good points for extrinsic motivators of matching, has the vibe of a KnowledgeHusk video but if it was polished and concise. I will be very surprised if you don't exponentially grow with this level on content
The Finals, a recent arena pvp shooter, got me a little disappointed as they use AI voices for the in game annunciators, so i maybe innocently expected some direct interactions with your in game actions, like "wow [username] with the grenade double kill" or whatever, but there is none of that. Maybe it's too early for it, idk, but i like this idea, i hope to see it someday. Games could do a lot of things with this, even talking about your previous games and achievements during the game when the spotlight is on you. Apex Legends has a thing akin to that where at the start of a game it will display a specific team for everyone to be wary of, and seeing your team show up after you've just won your previous game felt a little bit special.
