      @Ben T. sooo. They can make good cooler if they are able to? It's like audi can make good engine if they happen to do so. Soooo Zidane can do nice goal if the ball hits the net aaaand sometimes it doesn't. Actually that means they suck at making gpus because sometimes they actually factually suck eventho they try to make it good.

      @Ben T. I goes way back, their R9 series were bad as well. My R9 290 had the same cooler as the GTX 780 and the chip was different (AMD was narrower and taller) while the NVIDIA chip was more square which made the cooler leave some heatpipes outside of the chip. I saw 90+ temps in a well ventilated case, same as the AMD reference design and it was loud as hell.

  • @realabpc1883
    @realabpc1883 3 роки тому +2

    A QUICK NOTE: You mentioned the DrMOS power stages' thermal flag and wondered why they don't provide monitoring. Basically, it's a matter of economy. These PS do (as you've noted) have internal shunts to monitor current, but in order to transmit that value, they'd have to include an addition channel of A-D converter (for which there may or may not be enough room left over on the die) whereas a simple (and much cheaper) comparator is all that's needed to "flag" a value over spec.

    I flashed the Strix 3080 bios to this card. It works but the lack of a third 8 pin makes the actual power delivery wonky. You end up with lower clocks even though the afterburner says 450W. Perhaps you could mod the bios to work correctly? The Trio takes strix bios well.

      3 HDMI 2.1 outputs & 3 Display Ports compared to 3 DP & only 1 HDMI on most 3080s, 3 8 pin pcie power connectors which apparently have "power indicator LEDs", LCD customizable display $creen, of course RGB, and a core clock of 1905 MHZ. Interestingly, the Xtreme bios has a power limit of 370 watts, while the Master is 380. Still baffles me they aren't allowing more power and OC headroom on cards that should be able to handle it well.

    Just watched your GN vid on the FTW3 and then this, so my comment might be related to the GN video ...
    You were commenting that a chip had overcurrent protection, but not a current readout, and it sounded like you were wondering why 1 and not the other? Well, it might just use a simple comparator, and it's probably not terribly precise! Same with temp .. could simply monitor one part of the die pack with a comparator that trips somewhere between x and y degrees.

    I've been wondering if I should buy this or the MSI Gaming X Trio RTX 3080
    I prefer msi over this for its looks.
    And Also I do not plan on overclocking the gpu.
    So is it OK if I buy MSI or should I stick to this?

      @pablomuzzobar8940 3 роки тому

      If you are not overclocking buy it on looks because what parts are inside do not matter since you are not stressing the card past it's specifications.

      Thermals are better on the TUF... or actually any AIB compared to FE.

    If I ever can get a 3080 it probably will be the TUF, sure the Strix would be nicer, but about 100€ more and a new 3rd powercable extension on top is a big bump in price.
    But first lets see and wait what AMD can offer.

      Keep in mind that Strix cards have great resale value, so whatever you're spending on top upfront should get kicked back when you sell it

    if there are 10 power stage wouldn't it just be a 5 phase (5x2)? Unless there is a way to eyeball if the controller is running 8 phases.

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  3 роки тому +1

      the controller has 8 current sense circuits and there have been other Nvidia GPUs with odd phase counts with 8 phase controllers.

    The TUF GAMING OC 3090 is the best 3090 out their I haven't seen another 3090 that meets its standards. Even the Strix but that's just my opinion.... it's why I bought my TUF GAMING OC 3090 and not the ROG Strix.

      But then the AIB’s would have to handle the logistics of making shipping selling etc - also this would only be interesting to a very small part of the even already small pc enthusiasts community. But I do agree that it for sure would be cool
