GN loves to have a script and be tightly edited down so he can add one or two minutes of beginning and ending commercials and hit 32 minutes in his recent 3080 coverage. I think he's trying to get buildzoid to match their style rather than embrace the long one takes that include slight oops about mem voltage or education about control levels in a controller, for example. Probably worth doing to keep Steve happy and get paid. Maybe embrace a "cutting room floor" video that includes bloopers and errata.

    Buildzoid post a video.
    Me: click on it.
Me again: no plan to buy a 3080 at all.
Also me: Knows nothing about power delivery and card component.

@@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking ....i wonder why don't you edit the videos a bit when you run into a hickup?
for example that one bit where you noticed your notes had the wrong numbers, why not just pause there, correct the notes quickly and resume from there, you don't always need to start over, just make a little cut there, that wouldn't take long and no viewer would notice or care.
Doing it all in one take seems very time consuming when you have to re-do it.
Or is it more of a "losing your line of thought" thing?
No biggie either way, just curious because i fiddled a tiny little bit with editing in Vegas 13 for my dumb videos and simple stuff like a cut or fade-in and out isn't hard or time consuming at all, your process seems to be hit record, do your thing in one take, press stop and upload it (now that i think of it, i don't see any dumb 30 second dubstep intro / outro stuff, no overlays or any of that typical youtuber nonsense ...you know what, don't change anything :D ).

So this is the flagship MSI 3080 offering. I would have expected a better power delivery and higher power limit than the founders edition. Instead we basically get an inferior reference design posing as a custom design coupled with a good cooling solution. Definitely not worth the premium over the Zotac that also runs quietly. I now have my hopes on the EVGA FTW for something better than reference design.

From a power requirement standpoint you only need two 8-pins, but there is the possibility that the card requires you to plug all three in.
However if that's a concern for you I would strongly recommend getting a better PSU for your 3080 so that it doesn't kill your 3080.
Depending on your CPU I wouldn't go below 750W at all, above would be better and use the LTT PSU Tier List and get a PSU from the highest Tier. Everything less can't properly handle a 3080

My problem is I have long ago thrown out the bag of extra cables, and I can't seem to find a factory replacement that has the same modular pin config (this PSU used 12 pins -> 2x 8-pin Pci.e). My backup plan is just running a 2x Molex -> 8-pin for the 3rd plug on the GPU, but I don't know if that would be better or worse than just going with 2x 8-pins. Really it's going to take someone familliar with the power delivery system of this card to know for certain, that's why I was hoping Buildzoid would have some insight.

@@Standard.Candle Someone else asked this in another comment and bz said the same thing. Theoretically it should work, but he doesn't know if MSI forces you to plug in all three ^^
Have you already got the Gaming X? If not I would just switch to another card, would be the easiest solution. If that's not an option I would look on ebay and such. If that's also not helping I would just try to plug in only two. And if that's still not working out I would just sell the AX750 and get a new PSU.
A Molex Adapter would work, as long as you don't run it out of spec which you would have to check, but it's not the solution that I would go for tbh.

I really like the silent MSI cooling solutions, but the 3x 8-pins sketches me out. I wouldn't wanna run the 2x molex to 8-pin out-of-spec, but ideally I would know which of the 3x 8-pins are trying to draw the most juice. Or are they all evenly balanced 1/3 - 1/3- 1/3? The only other thing running on the molex cable string is an LED strip, so like less than 5w, so it SHOULD be fine. • @mouthstick-gaming

I think MSI really shot themselves in the foot with their choice of three 8-pin power connectors. I have a 750W PSU with only two 8 pin power connectors, so presumably I'd have to change my PSU were I to buy this card? From a marketing perspective, that will definitely limit the appeal of buying this card.

  • @AaronAverett

Right off the bat, it bothers me that this supposedly high end board has pads where they clearly just left out components. If they're charging a premium for this thing, would it really kill MSI to just include all of the phases they originally designed into the board?
Edit: I otherwise dig the layout, though. Looks like it'd be a lot easier to repair than the FE if broke.

Why is msi marketing this card as a high end model? Its so basic, makes me wonder about their lowest tier ventus model

@Ben T. I agree with you on that point.
I had a 970 ME (Limited Edition lol) card that I absolutely loved, it could run +250 core on air and still chill at 68C :D. Not to mention the green/black scheme which was boss.
Now I have a MSI 1660 Super Gaming X, and it still performs well but it is a budget card using budget components which is fine (I did unplug the RGBs since nothing else I own has them). Using budget cost saving on the high-end SKUs on the other hand is lame. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

I think 50mV drop is a bit over exaggerated. The voltage drop on that distance between the memory and the vrm will be insignificant. And plus, I'm sure they used very thick power tracks to mitigate any voltage drops, if any.
The biggest concern will be a larger power ground loop area. Ie the current path is larger.
This will add unnecessary inductance which will decrease the performance of the voltage regulator chip. It will affect the transient response and stability of the regulator chip.
But honestly the distance between the memory chip and regulator is not that large so I don't see an issue there.

  • @Muffinman121

Your explanation, about why you distribute the power delivery for the memory, is missing one point. It is also to avoid current from one module flowing through the same plane of the PCB.
The reason being the plane inductance/resistance and ohms law. If current from one memory chip flows through the same part of the plane as for the other chip the voltage will drop more at the chip furthest away as the voltage drop 'stacks'.
    Example:
1 PSU, 2 memory chips all on a straight line. Assume chips draw 1A each.
Chip 1: 10 mOhm from PSU
Chip 2: 30 mOhm from PSU
The current from both chips will flow in the first 10 mOhm while the last part of chip 2 current will only flow in the 20 mOhm between the two chips:
    Chip 1 voltage drop: 2A*10 mOhm = 20mV
    Chip 2 voltage drop: 2A*10 mOhm + 1A*20 mOhm = 40mV
Were they spread out no overlap would be seen resulting in:
    Chip 1: 1A*10mOhm =10mV
    Chip 2: 1A*30mOhm =30mV
If current or plane impedance is higher this will be more pronounced.
The same thing would happen if only one power hungry chip is used. This is also why the core VRMs are not clustered in one side of the PCB.

That mess of those small smd-s are amazing. How big are they? 1mm maybe, and that is the longer side? How the hekk they can put and solder those hundreds of parts to their place?

    • @Numfuddle
      @Numfuddle 3 роки тому +2

The solder is printed on the PCB via screen printing and the solder is sticky so that the components stick to the PCB during reflow soldering and handling. The placement if the SMD components is handled by a machine which picks and places the SMD components and the placement is controlled via camera and other sensors
