- It's 65 years since Wellington Airport first opened its doors to thousands of spectators for the Grand Opening in 1959. We look back over some of the milestones and memories as we celebrate 65 years connecting the Wellington region.
That “flexible wing monoplane” was not anywhere near Wellington Airport. It did a short flight at Pigeon Bush in Wairarapa, but crashed, then after being repaired, it did a number of short flights in Gladstone district, east of Carterton. And that is the movie footage you see.

OK, I give up.. what was that flying boat in Evans Bay? It didn’t look like the later TEAL Solents or Sandringhams?

I’m not so sure… the proportions look off, mostly the height/ depth of the fuselage. To me it looks more like an Empire class..
a milestone i thought wellington airport was no ware near from a wellington avgeek
