I was lucky enough to attend the 1981 Derby with my father, when Shergar romped home. I remember having 100 pounds on Shergar to win at even money, before he dropped to odds on. That was a weeks wages for me back then, working in pubs in London. The hairs on the back of my neck went up, when Shergar switched gears. He made the other horses look like the were in a different race. Great pity about Shergars death, he was a very wonderful horse. Hats off also to Walter Swinburn who I think was 19 at that time. A great day at Epsom with my father, fond memories!
To people bashing Ballydoyle for depending too much on external sires lately... Remember that St Mark's Basilica's offspring are only a few months from being ready🤯
Golden Fleece so underrated. Easily beat future runaway irish and french derby winner Assert Twice. Also in trial before Epsom beat Stanerra and others on bridal at curragh. You can watch all his races on youtube Golden Fleece champion racehorse with audio comments from Vincent, Sangster, Eddery and Piggott. Also well documented by Eddery saying he was best horse he ever rode. Pity injury and then horse died of cancer very young.
Lester's balance on a horse was a thing of beauty. The greatest ever.
It's good to go back through these famous and infamous Epson Derby's Of The Past And The Present!! Very Impressive!!
