In this lesson I will demonstrate how to play the killer intro to Metallica's incredible "Master of Puppets".
Now I don't plan on only teaching this part of the song. I will definitely be finishing the whole thing note-for-note. I just always gauge which songs to finish first based of the support they get. So if you wanna see the rest of these lessons let me know!
In this Master of Puppets guitar lesson I will break down the extremely fast down picked intro that so many Metallica fans love.
In will require a pretty advanced picking hand technique. If you don't have very much experience with this type of rapid muted down stroke metal thrashing, simply try and get the coordination down first. Then as you slowly speed the riff up, pay close attention to any tension that may arise in your picking hand wrist, forearm and shoulder. Use small relaxed movements.
The left hand doesn't get to sit around very long either. It is required to hop down the fretboard fret-by-fret keeping up with the right hand. Getting them both synchronized can be quite the challenge.
The second half of the intro goes into a riff that is a bit easier to play since it stays put in one area of the fretboard and the right hand picking is slightly easier (I explain why in the video lesson).
This is classic thrash metal at it's absolute best so take your time and learn it right. I will be back here soon to show you guys the rest. :)
Carl...
Props to all my mates trying this on acoustic
pine marten me
pine marten me lmao I can’t afford electric
edit: i ended up getting one some months after i commented 😂
lofiramen hope you can afford one soon
pine marten thanks dude, my sister won’t let me borrow her ibanez 😂
I wish I could buy an electric, but since I can’t, I’ll stick to acoustic
*Plays first chord: "the easy part is now over"
💀💀
Doi need distortion pedal
@@adamheldt13 Yes
Adam Heldt or a amp
The irony is - even first accord he played false:)
*kills it on the guitar for like a minute and a half* yeah uh hey guys
This is way too funny
I’d rather have that than “HEEEEEY THERE YOU TUBERS!” Followed by five minutes of talking about how great the song is. Give me an example of the song so I can see what the goal is and then roll into the lesson.
Songs not that hard
ガーソーク how about you post a video of you playing this and remind me when you do. THEN you have the right to act like an asshole in this dude’s comment sections when i’m just trying to compliment him lmao
natalie
I actually came here to learn the song
Like 1-3 weeks ago
I’m still having some troubles on some parts
Friend: You have to hit the gym to grow your arms
Me: “nah I will just learn master of puppets intro”
Hetfield was pretty yoked, himself
m.ua-cam.com/video/6gcLW4gMRZE/v-deo.html
You don’t use your arm to play Master of Puppets, you suppose to use your wrist as a pendulum. That’s the secret for speed picking. You’ll never have Hetfield down picking speed if you use your arm for down stroke.
And that's just the beginning folks!
@@deanstiller i think it was obvious that it was, but i think he was just giving advice
yeah my right forearm was bigger than my left one after playing it lol
The reason I learned from Carl is because Marty does not even play the first riff. I trust this guy when it comes to songs cause it is the real way to play them.
Yeah Marty is more for beginners and alternative ways to play them, or an easier way. Carl shows the real way or the closest way to
Yeah I especially like how Carl will also include subtle hammer ons and such that you hear on the recorded soundtrack as well as slight variations from live concerts, to get that authentic sound. Cheers if you see this mate.
marty schwartz sucks he plays most riffs wrong and takes so long to teach and just rambles on and on
I watch both but what I do is get the basics from Marty that sound right and the them come to Carl for things like harder stuff and solos
@@jims1046 His beginner electric guitar lessons playlist definitely gave me a boost when I got back into guitar, but other than that, most of the songs he teaches are bound to have mistakes. And yeah, the tones definitely aren't helping out
The man responsible for a million players around the world sitting in a guitar center playing the intro for half an hour then leaving. Which includes me...
I'm looking at getting an explorer and what better song to try one out right?
@@tylercady3985 right
All hail Hetfield 🤘 in his own league
Do it again and again again! Then buy a new guitar for yourself, if you need or not, may it cripple you with debt, and live your life happily 🤘
At least you were smart enough to get away from your neighbors. 😅
One of the best intros in the history of metal music, which shows a huge middle finger to any music theory .
One word... Megadeth
Oleg Tkachev uhhh Slayer solos?
TeamAtFort Slayer solos are garbage though.. badass riffs, but their solos are just gross noise
Music theory is the reason why Metallica aren't good anymore, they don't have a solid grasp of it
Except the intro utilizes a chromatic scale and is in 4/4 time signature. But yeah, it has nothing to do with music theory (sarcasm). SMH.
1:06 the coolest introduction ever, after performing the rocking performance ... you are a real dude
You are literally my go to, trying to learn Metallica. So far, you’ve taught me 4. This will make 5. Rythym only.
I made a new friend called carpel tunnel
George Silver d
George Silver u need a smaller guitar neck then
get a uke
George Silver haha me too..but I don't play guitar
Did you continue with this song? I would love to see the next parts!!
Eddie Munson got me wanting to play guitar again after about 8 years
Same!
Nah fr
What guitar is this called?
Im the 100th like 😇
nice
Yeeeesssss...again. Keep up these Metallica lessons.

TheBushwooky some say he never came back
You ever just click on a video and they play the song in the beginning you just think to yourself,
Dang im gettin ready to learn this
Do you play it now?
Ally he time. Then I dig in and try. I can do this!
I played this on acoustic and my pick literally broke
LOL
When will the funeral be held
RIP, to the fallen pick
I'm sure your pick was very loyal and did you good in the end rest in peace my friend 😔
Pick was gay.
That part with the e and a string is the hardest of the whole song
XD i know
No thats actually the easy part. Try Kirks solo
I suck at the fucking slide powerchord in that section
Andreas Lindholm yea me to any advice?
Well. I didn't practice it. But I would guess that moving your whole hand would help a lot. Other than that, practice.
4:31 "this one is a little bit easier to play." No. No it is not
Yea it's the hardest part with the downstroke for me😂
Ive been playing for a year and this comment makes me feel a little better about my abilities. this part did come fairly easy.
@@Mad_Axe_Man125 How? Can you give me some tips for that part? I've been playing for just 7 months xD
@@nc3057 honestly I think the biggest favor I did myself was practicing chromatic scales up and down the neck ascending and descending, starting with both upstrokes and downstrokes for hours. you have got to strengthen that pinky. keep at it it will click in a few months and you will feel so proud of yourself. I never even practiced downpicking only until I started learning this intro.
Yeah for me it’s the hardest part
Are you ready for the most metal concert in the history of the world?..
that a rhetorical question?
Dude. most . metal. EVER
@@_jsaxe if you don’t get the reference then you don’t get the reference ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
MOST. METAL. EVER!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Learnt playing the guitar through this tutorial back when I was 13.
Now I'm 23 and picked up my old guitar after a really long time to relearn this masterpiece
After a month of practicing this song I can finally play it 😅 thank you, GuitarLessons 👊🏼
FYI I’m 4 months into my guitar journey.. alternate picking is next
i would suggest yu try the solo as well cuz it develops the muscles in your hands and better increases your techniques(i speak from experience)
Since you're now 5 months in ... Did you take an actual lessons or just learn on youtube? I wanna start but i can't have actual lessons so is it enough to just learn from the internet?
@@evil7189 yes it is 💯 I been learning by UA-cam n online guitar tabs 🤘🏼
@@goldenbdogg4880 did you begin learning with acoustic or electric?
@@evil7189 Electric. It can be played like an acoustic too.. Nothing else matters intro was the first song I learned on it.
Then I got better the more I practiced. I’m not great but I can play the guitar lol I can’t wait to see how much progress I make in the next year or so
Being someone that hasn't picked up a guitar in over 6 years.. and never really being any good.. I found your lessons easy to follow... many thanks for posting these vids... much appreciated!!
Yo guys i understand you all wanna learn this song and impress the shit out of your friends but if you're a newbie to guitar i'd highly suggest practising your technique and playing other stuff. Master of Puppets being quite a tough song for Begginners, i'd suggest something like Enter Sandman :)
Enter sandman isn't that easy either buddy
Mikey yy Dude the main riff is so easy, you can get the hang of it in like 1 or 2 weeks if you're a complete begginner, just practise man
oh no i am not a begginner, the main riff took me like an hour to master, im talking about the whole song.
Mikey yy yeah doe the solo could take some practise :)
I can do this at grade 5 rock school, do you think I'll be able to do the rest
Really appreciate this lesson and the way you broke everything down. My guitar teacher and I started going over this, but we only have 30 minutes for our lessons. He tabbed it out for me, and I used your video when I got lost. I have it down now. Keep up the good videos!
Learning this now of all times for um, no reason in particular...
Seems “strange”
@@joshuamedrano2712hey these "things" are normal
preparing for the influx of people learning this riff after watching stranger things.
Lol yeah
Love the lesson, makes it a LOT easier. However, I believe that for the first riff, you palm mute the open E notes and play the others regularly
Imagine the thought process into actually writing a riff so brilliant
For those of you who struggle playing the fast parts remember to do it relaxed it can be really helpful.
Thanks
Took you 5 years Carl, but you did it! You finished off MoP! He had just uploaded "The Thing That Should Not Be" today! Greatest ever!
Why out the whole thing I'm finding the sliding power chord the hardest
Yeah man I feel you it sucks so bad
Calluses
Weaver Cattle Company nice! Seems logic. Il try that. Im on the guitar for 4weeks now. I can almost do this intro, except slides... Thabks man
Weaver Cattle Company when I pick is it just the e string or e
Ugh, so am I. I can nail most of part 1 but it kills my wrist. That sliding bit is a total bitch to play.
Bro your tutorials are amazing and you don't rush anything. Thank you so much! I just subscribed with notifications on!!!
Happy to see you carl back again ❤
I sat down and started playing at 3:30.
It is now 9:07 at night
I love carl brown this man taught me basically every single riff I know my fave rn is probably hells bells by acdc
I just wanted to thank you man.. I started playing electric and you are the only one who I enjoy learning from on UA-cam 🌬️❤️❤️
I came earlier in the year when I was just beginning. Now, after hours and hours of dedicated practice, I am back! Not only am I now ready for this song, but I think that the intro is pretty easy!
nice! hope i will make it to this point too
I’m learning this as my first song, I just picked up my guitar (that I’ve had for years) yesterday and don’t even know the terminology or keys of guitars lol
Update I can say I’m glad I learned this song the first riff is super helpful to learn picking and finger placement I’m ready to move on to the 2nd part of the riff
@@Zaclrl I just bought my first guitar 3 months ago, this is my real full first song also, and yeah it pretty much makes you learn all the shit. I'm up to 3 minutes and 30 seconds of it. If you play it about 1 to 2 hours a day for a month you can get it done haha. I have the hard fingertips to prove it, and I wake up like 10 times a night with my left hand numb/in pain.

You’re hard
I don’t know why are you asking us
I did it :) I remember some months ago I could even begin to play this, it's been 11 months since I play and to play this intro at full speed was my biggest absolute dream, I DID IT. Thanks brother 🖤
Man it must feel awesome being able to play this
Keep at its additive once you get it
No, because it's easy. If you want awesome try the breakdown in the middle or that ladder scale run right after the solo
Thanks!
Thank you!!
i guess im back at being a punk rocker
that's his joke dude.
+Looming Dawn you're right if you mean every punk band from the 90s to now
Looming Dawn So you're basically saying the Sex Pistols are shit.
Guess you can say the same for all of metallica's post Black Album releases.
+Looming Dawn The Jam were a punk band and Paul weller is probably a better musician than most metal guitarists
Looming Dawn You can't judge based on the style of music being played. Of course certain music genres only have minimal requirements. But it doesn't mean they can't play guitar as well as anybody else.
the first day I got my guitar I tried to learn it now a year later I'm back and this is easy thank you Carl for keeping us motivated
At least when I learnt Smoke on the water, I had some sense of achievement
I skip past Marty’s tutorials every time if this man has one posted. Keep teaching us how to shred carl!!!!!!
awesome video keep up the great work... more metallica!!!!
Saw another video where someone in the comments said once they learned this everything else seemed easy so here I am
"Chrissy, this is for you"
My guy strokes it one time and says “okay, now the easy part is now over!” Gotta love it! 😊
i won’t stop till i get it right. for u, eddie munson😭
omg i remember when i hated u because i sucked on guitar and didnt understand frets and other things. And it was also One i tried but ive been watching u for a while now and have gotten alot better!! I realise that i actually love ur videos and they are very understandable and i am shocked that i can actually play Master Of Puppets first riff im like freaking out 😹😹
POV: You want to show Eddie he didn’t die for nothing
Yess

Spoilers you inconsiderate pup
Or I just want to learn a metallica song.
This guy is an animal dude can play anything anytime anywhere and anyhow . Keep rocking mate
My wrist hurts
When I bought my electric guitar back in high school (1992) this was the first song I learned to play. No UA-cam to help. Just a metallica book. But I did it. Killed my bloody arm haha!
Thanks bro I played half of this in my classic guitar
How does this page teach every freaking song I want to learn 😨😨😨????thank you for teaching me how to play the guitar!🙏🏻🙏🏻
View bump incoming all thanks to my boy EDDIE MUNSON - LONG LIVE THE KING
Just wanted to say thanks! This is the best channel I’ve found for learning guitar riffs. Perfect speed for people who can play pretty well. Not too long and not too short. Thanks a lot! My playing has improved
great lesson as always, thanks Carl. It helps a lot when you play the whole thing in a moderate speed, helps me so much when learning these songs.
Holy shit. I can do it. The tabs were messing with my head for some reason, but this video made it click. THANK YOU.
This is a much better tutorial than marty music
I’ve been playing for a year and I stopped for like 4 months decided to come back and holy smokes I learned the whole intro and I’m only 12
Carl, you are da bomb! wow dude. awesome licks. thanks for all that you do. i have learned much over the past couple of years from your vids.
omg i had such a hard time getting that 2nd intro part right till i saw your lesson ,that tip with downstrokes on the A string works so awesome thx man!
The only part I'm having trouble with is the power chords. I wish you went into slightly more detail on how and where to position your hand and fingers
If you can't play power-chords you shouldn't be learning this song
Cameron Ross he literally asked where to put his fingers on the fretboard, dont be an asshole💀
@@genghisfimpley3516 exactly
@@nikolailic9958 he isnt being an asshole, you're just a bitch
read a tab dipshit
Thank you! I love that noodley lick near the end of the intro; it takes a little practice to get it up to speed.
For Eddie
For anyone trying to do the constant downs picking, it gets easy if you keep pushing yourself. start with only some of the intro and do more and more. I'm only 13 and can play the whole song like they do. It did take me like a week and a half so it was lots of work. I feel like big headed douce leaving this comment but I struggles with this at first. Good luck to anyone learning this
1:06 the tutorial starts :). Great work !
3 months of playing and I'm learning this on acoustic. My fingers are having a fun time. Took me about 3 hours to get up to the slides.
Here after Eddie munson ❤️
I seriously practiced this yesterday and barely got 75% speed on this intro compared to James. Plus, it sounded really sloppy. I just woke up from a nap now, and can down pick this crazily fast and clean. Did I practice this a thousand times in my sleep. My arm feels fine. 😂 Great video by the way Carl. I appreciate what you do.
*learns this*
Ok I've mastered guitar, new instrument
this lesson is for beginners, the patience it took for me to learn this as an intermediate was immense
this song is a workout, I'm sweating right now
We need to get this channel to 1 million subscribers
For me, the hardest rift in the song is the one that starts at 0:32. I can't play it at full speed but every other rift I can ... any tips ?
Practice
I like your tutorial much better than Marty's because you play it the correct way, and the way it's transcribed on the tab. Makes it a helluva lot easier to follow along with
if you're just now picking up the guitar after watching stranger things 4 and you want to learn this song, just come back to this video after a year or two of intense practice lol
Exactly lol
i don’t think you’d need a year or two of practice to play this
@@tr4qs to play the entire song good would prob take an intermediate
@@tr4qs the solo and the down picking definitely require at LEAST a year of guitar practice, unless someone is just unnaturally gifted at guitar. As for the chord structure in general for this song, yeah it’s pretty easy.
@@blaneshirley7522 I gotta say... I just started playing the guitar two weeks ago and after practicing every day I somehow can play the solo up to speed !! tbf tho I do play a lot of other instruments at a high level so I guess it was easy to pick up

i think a lot of us are here for the same reason...
I've watched too many tutorials for this song and only yours I've been able to play master of puppets
