    In this lesson I will demonstrate how to play the killer intro to Metallica's incredible "Master of Puppets".
    Now I don't plan on only teaching this part of the song. I will definitely be finishing the whole thing note-for-note. I just always gauge which songs to finish first based of the support they get. So if you wanna see the rest of these lessons let me know!
    In this Master of Puppets guitar lesson I will break down the extremely fast down picked intro that so many Metallica fans love.
    In will require a pretty advanced picking hand technique. If you don't have very much experience with this type of rapid muted down stroke metal thrashing, simply try and get the coordination down first. Then as you slowly speed the riff up, pay close attention to any tension that may arise in your picking hand wrist, forearm and shoulder. Use small relaxed movements.
    The left hand doesn't get to sit around very long either. It is required to hop down the fretboard fret-by-fret keeping up with the right hand. Getting them both synchronized can be quite the challenge.
    The second half of the intro goes into a riff that is a bit easier to play since it stays put in one area of the fretboard and the right hand picking is slightly easier (I explain why in the video lesson).
    This is classic thrash metal at it's absolute best so take your time and learn it right. I will be back here soon to show you guys the rest. :)
    Carl...

    Hey Carl, Thank you so much for these videos. Back 15 years ago, when I was a metalhead, it was SO difficult to pick up these things! I'm curious in the technique you apply, when you do power chords. You use the little finger even though it's an ordinary G5 for example. Is there a special reason for this? And is it by any chance related to the Dave Mustaine spider chord or whatever that is called? All time best regards!

    Just wanted to say thanks! This is the best channel I’ve found for learning guitar riffs. Perfect speed for people who can play pretty well. Not too long and not too short. Thanks a lot! My playing has improved

    For anyone trying to do the constant downs picking, it gets easy if you keep pushing yourself. start with only some of the intro and do more and more. I'm only 13 and can play the whole song like they do. It did take me like a week and a half so it was lots of work. I feel like big headed douce leaving this comment but I struggles with this at first. Good luck to anyone learning this

    Inspired to check out a tutorial by stranger things since it reminded me that I could never quite get it to sound right when I was really into metallica. 1 minute in and hits me "oh yeah, I totally could have just played it higher up on E instead of alternating between E and A!"

    If someone is still looking at this later which is possible it is in standard tuning, but the frequency is a bit lower. If you have a chromatic tuner with the adjustable frequency lower it to about 432 or 435 instead of 440 sounds way better.

    Notice how at 0:43 he stops focusing on what notes hes playing and closes his eyes once hes in the rythym and just grooves along. Thats how you want to be able to play, I always find myself doing that. It may just be the dabs but I find zoneing out while grooving along and hitting all the notes correctly and on time, becaus if you hit one wrong note you're gunna snap out of it and start focusing on what your playing to fix yourself. I call it entering the "zone" great way to play if your a bedroom guitarist which most of us are.

    When you guys are performing the 3rd and 2nd fret power cords back to back in the second part of this tutortial, how do you work your thumb? Mine tends to get stuck to the neck during the transition making it harder to stay consistent. Will this just come with practice?

    • @charlesmartiniii1405
      @charlesmartiniii1405 6 років тому

      Tommy Shank depends on what kinda power chord your using. Only hold down one string with the pinky

    • @josep43767
      @josep43767 6 років тому

      what I am doing is keeping my thumb in 3rd fret position and just extending my fingers back to second fret. you need to make sure you are keeping a super relaxed wrist to do this though

  • @archie3k433
    @archie3k433 4 роки тому

    @1:20... Great attitude! When he said "If you're not good at them..." for a second I thought he was going to say something like "... then this song will give you headaches." But he said ".. this song will make you good at them." I'm not even saying that fast downstrokes are necessarily that difficult, but that's just a great attitude to have. Can't do it now? Effort + Time = you'll get there, just stick with it.
