Now, this is how engine rebuild should look like on UA-cam. I have learnt two very important lessons from today's video. 1 - patience. 2 - systematic approach to solving a problem.
@@Vera_and_Christian Hi Loving the channel, I want to mention a problem I had to solve with a non start D3, it would crank no fault codes or message on dash, a real head scratcher,it turned out to be the key had lost its chip code, it was only stood up up for 6 months, key recoded as it didn’t have a spare, started straight away, never came across this problem ever again, typical LR😅 All the best David
I feel your pain! It’s so damned frustrating when you are sure you have done everything right and the engine just will not start. It can really knock your own confidence. But you will get there. There are viewers all over the world that cannot wait until the next episode and wish you both every bit of wellness possible to get and see it started.
Regardless of the initial outcome of this particular video but you are both phenomenal, and the level of work you do is highly commendable. I don't even own a landrover, but I've subscribed and enjoy the mechanical engineering aspect of your channel along with the hilarious humour banter between you both Who else is subscribed but doesn't own a Landrover??
I applaud you both on your patience and analytical approach. I think I would be throwing wrenches around the workshop about now! On one front I am glad you depict the real world where shit happens! Thank you.
Christian & Vera, excellent video. Even when Engineers who have both mechanical and electronics experience (as I also do and you obviously do) things go wrong. You do wonder how a garage franchised or otherwise would identify and fix this, let alone what the final bill would be😮
So now know we know, Christian is 'so high maintenance' and that is coming from Vera.😅 Amazing German🇩🇪 double act by keeping everyone entertained on Sunday's.👍👋👋
It's a right pig when a rebuilt engine refuses to start. I don't have a lot of experience with Land Rover diesels, I'm a V8 petrolhead myself lol but think your approach to troubleshooting the problem is spot on Christian. I hope it turns out to be a faulty trigger wheel in the end. You'll having running in the next episode! Cheers from England.
Great edutainment as always. Thanks so much guys, and so sorry the engine didn't reward all your efforts by cooperating. That said, you've identified the problem and I'm sure all will be well again soon. Looking forward to the next instalment with baited breath. Viel gluck (mit umlaut)! 😉
I am 100% certain you have identified the issue. However I had a similar problem on a LR TD5 engine. Engine cranked non-starter. Tried everything. Transpired the starter motor was worn and creating an electrical magnetic field when under load which was confusing the crank position sensor. (I had already replaced the CPS with a new one) New starter motor and on the button. I only mention this in case the new crank ring doesn’t fix it as the starter would not be something you might consider. All the best 👍🏻
Nice early Sunday start or non-start. This is the point we were waiting for after your teaser about the crank sensor in what seems a lifetime ago. Every item you fitted, every bolt you tightened ..all the fluids ... had my breath held because we knew this was coming. Feel sorry for you, but we are all human and a lot of people will benefit from this. Oh ... and inevitable that the OMGs would turn to WTFs 🤐😁
An early Sunday viewing boost this week, if not the outcome we were all expecting today. Of course we have total confidence in Vera finding the fault for Christian and normal service resuming next week. Looking forward to watching that episode already and meanwhile, thanks for sharing the frustrations as well as the elation of this project with us! Onwards…
ITS LR TIME😊😊😊 only got to see this episode now.christian will solve this problem.these episodes have been brillant, great education on landrover discos.i can't wait to hear the disco start up! I'd say christian has it solved already!!!! Till next week folks have a good week😊😊😊😊
Your diagnostic skills and patience are first rate, this is a classic example of a logical process for troubleshooting a problem. When this is finished it will be the best maintained and loved LR3. Having taken it and others apart you know every nut and bolt. The way you can add humour into the content puts your videos on another level.
Brilliant: having the tools, brains and calmness, to methodically check through all the possible problems and then get an extra week of content, couldn’t have gone better.
Vera you keep moving Christian forward, with that analytical mind, I know he’ll get it…and make you a happy camper with your LR again. You two with your diligence and sense of humor are the best👍
I actually got that from a guy in the UK who fixes his Discovery 3 in the rain, outside, all funny. And he has UA-cam a UA-cam Channel called "We are big kids" www.youtube.com/@WeAreBigKids Got to give credit where credit is due. AT least I think it was him. 😅👍🙋♀️
It's so good to see honest content in this clip. It's a nightmare when you put it all back together and it doesn't start but showing the logical approach to rectifying it will prove invaluable to others in the future. Well providing they know mates with all those scopes 😂. I feel for you both but I know that you will sort it out and we all look forward to seeing it finally start up next week 🙏the truck looks really clean and it will be great and last many more years to come for your future adventures. 👍
Thank you for the amusing presentation, that apart, you're both patient and talented. I fixed mainframes, and we too had to use your style of diagnosis, the mental pressure is significant. Discovering being let down by new faulty components is a rotten setback, especially when a whole organisation was at a standstill while we struggled. Worse situation when the wife can't have her car back. Love your videos...
Great diagnoses, WTF Vera! This would defeat us armchair boys, although I've thought about getting a cheap Rygol scope. Fascinating viewing though, and I love Vera's impassioned remarks! You are so prim and proper Cristian, I kept hitting my head on an exposed bolt the other day, the air was blue!! Can't wait till next week, and a great tea break watching this, now on with my work!
I can not imagine the hours that went into diagnosing what essentially looks like a substandard new part!!! I know a lot of people who would have given up on this. Congratulations on your perseverance. Fantastic diagnosing and knowledge of the vehicle. The part manufacturer should be employing you for testing!
😅👍 No you got the uncut version. Christian knows how to diagnose a problem. He singled out the triggerwheel/sensor or camshaft sensor immediately after we knew that the shortblock was ok. And we knew that with the help of starter spray. You can clearly hear that everything is moving correctly, evenso it did not start. 🙋♀️
@@Vera_and_Christian Yes, it was an amazing job, bacprobing the wires and count pulses on the scope. Even setting up the makeshift test rig using the lathe🙂👍
OMG! So many F-bombs! 💣😅 But this is the reality of working on such projects. It's very exciting to see this project coming together, and I'm sure you both have learned a lot through this process. I'm sure this is figured out and your now have a marvelous D3 and a smiling and happy Vera.
I’m not too surprised that it does not work yet. It’s impressive that you know how to diagnose, and have the tools. If everything just works, you don’t learn anything. So… in a way, it’s better that you need to dig deeper and know everything about everything. That always seems to give the proper result.

Amazing skills, Christian. I can't begin to imagine what this rebuild and fault diagnosis would cost in a shop. No wonder so many LR3s can be had for a song now.
Like many others on here, I felt for you guys in this moment, Using a scope to count the pulses during the rotational cycle on the trigger wheel is great content to watch, but not what you guys had planned for during attempted start up. As always a great explanation and as step by step as you can in relation to video content In one of your previous videos, Christian did say we would see this included in the content where we would see the engine not starting because of the aftermarket trigger wheel Keep up the great work Christian & Vera 👍
Keep going Christian and Vera. We have all been there when we get very close to the end of a job and don't get the results we were hoping for. Looking forward to the next instalment of LR Time.
I feel sick for you guys, don’t rule out Land Rover sabotage. There could have been a Solihull hit squad sent to gmb. Look around for discarded Subway, Big John’s or Greggs fast food containers!

Your average home mechanic wouldn't have a clue on the electronics on modern engines, you are a very talented man. Another great video BTW
Good morning Christian and Vera, I enjoyed this one so much I've already watched it twice😂. His channel is called " Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics " , his channel is almost as good as yours but not half as much fun! 😂. Looking forward to next week's thrilling episode! ❤
Ivan would have scoped the trigger wheel and then gone looking for a "known good waveform" online. Presumably Christian did that but didn't find one and instead made his own "known good waveform" using OEM parts mounted in a lathe. I've been watching Ivan, Keith Defazio and Eric O, Scanner danner etc since forever and have never seen them do anything like this.
