    Traction control should have been turned off, I own one and it is even mentioned in the user manual that you need to turn TC off in difficult 4x4 situations. Car is great, if the driver knows how to operate it.

    A more common scenario for people who will use this vehicle for vacations, getaways to the mountains, etc might be how it performs on "washboard" roads. I’ve mounted my Skidplates a few days ago snd then tested the car in a (light) off-road-environment and it did pretty well!
      The specs of my car for comparison;
      PHEV (265hp)
      Adaptive suspension
      Michelin pilot alpine 5 SUV in 235/55R19 103V
      Sheriff skid plates, 2mm steel coated with upol Raptor and much rust protection (they are a nightmare to install but fit really well… definitely a recommendation!)
      On non paved side roads this car is really quick without rattling itself to pieces.
      On gravel it performed equally as nice and even on wet (really wet) gras it kept on track quite well.
      The AWD works well, a bit FWD heavy but thats ok and the instantaneous torque from the electric motor is a big bonus in rough (ish) terrain!
      I’m a volunteer firefighter and needed a new car i can get on site with no matter what road (or non at all) there is… fast!
      This car isn’t a hardcore off road monster, no rock crawling or heavy off-road. But it’s comfy, versatile and remarkably fun to drive!
      As an addition;
      Ive formally owned a 300hp BMW e90 330XD with racing suspension and some work done so there’s some knowledge of how a car should feel when driving it hard.
      The Tucson isn’t a race car but if you know you rev-ranges and know how to handle it, this baby is not that slower on my handling course!
      And don’t listen to people wo say “that adaptative suspension isn’t worth its money”!
      Is changes the handling significantly if you driving aggressive and it reduces body roll to a degree ive only knew from my e90!
      Feel free to ask if you have further questions!

    I bought the same vehicle 2 mo ago. Your review is excellent and gives me concern re winter driving. And like others have pointed out, it would have been helpful if you had tested: Snow Mode, Locking Differential, and Traction Control during your mountain climbing test.
    It would also be helpful if you did a review of a Tucson Hybrid with around 1200 mi on it. It appears several owners, including me, begin to experience engine distress when accelerating uphill while the 1.6T engine is providing power. This for me started at around 1,000 mi and it is quite noticeable. Of course, according to Hyundai, the vehicle is not throwing a fault code. This behavior was not evident at all when new. So, a long term (really a short term) review would be welcomed.

      Honestly put some 17in wheels and better snow rated tires on it. The blue model has 235/65r17s. Put some falken wildpeaks on it and it will be fine under 5in of snow i think. If you need to drive in more than that you should probably look at a wilderness trim subaru, or a jeep grand cherokee. Nothing unfortunately in the price of a tucson has amazing awd to get through high snow. Usually you pay 45k or more for something that can easily get through it

    That AWD traction control problem exist for years for their system. I have the 2016 Tucson, when it is suffering some kind of traction issue that confuses it, it will cut off all the power control from your gas control for a sec to 3 depends. Many times I got stuck when I turn into small road with snow and the power for cut off when my rear end still on the main road. (Yes, people slam brakes behind me thinking I'm an idiot, why don't I push my car thru)
    Traction control off trick is kinda what fix it, but the traction control off will overhead the AWD system if you are in deeper snow that needs the power to push thru. Tucson is great car, but just their AWD is hella bad.

  • @TinkyTheCat
    @TinkyTheCat 3 роки тому +40

    Interesting. I've got one of these and never seen anything remotely like what you did on the rock trail (stuttering, power being cut, etc.) - granted the worst conditions mine has seen are muddy mountain dirt roads.
    I'm curious if this is something software related they'll be able to fix, or if it's something that changing drive modes or switching off traction control could have resolved. 99% of CUVs never even drive on dirt, let alone off-road, so I suppose it's also possible that the vehicle simply wasn't designed for it.

      I'm thinking it's more software-related, or that a setting was not configured properly. I noticed in the review he failed to mention that the gauge cluster is customizable... perhaps because he didn't know that many of the vehicle's settings are in the Infotainment system and one lets you swap out the "Energy Gauge" for a traditional Tachometer and that it is configurable within each driving mode as well. There are probably many other settings he didn't attempt during this review that might have provided a different result.

    • @TinkyTheCat
      @TinkyTheCat 3 роки тому +8

      @@jaginaz People were discussing this review on some car forums.
      From what I recall, the gist of it was that the hybrid uses a 6-speed version of the 8-speed auto found in the regular Tucson (which did quite well on this test). But unlike the 8-speed, the 6-speed doesn't have a torque converter.
      This means the hybrid is largely limited to the electric motor at extremely low speeds (0-5mph) where the combustion engine can't put all its power down.
      The guy who explained the mechanics behind why the hybrid failed this test also said the vehicle will still do very well driving in deep snow and ice, it's just that the transmission design is not suited (at all) for rock crawling.

    I have the SEL model that has the slightly smaller screen but with some more physical switches which is nice. The one thing that I still don't understand is that the SEL and lower apparently only get wireless carplay, but the limited only gets wired. I understand if wireless is the premium optional feature, but why is wireless the only option??? Luckily I haven't had any issues with it in a while, but there were a few times where the system was completely unresponsive. Took a while to figure out that the small button on the dash could be pressed to reset the system in a few seconds, but the inconsistency of carplay integration is head scratching.

Hyundai's drivetrain layout for their hybrids is quite different from the more typical one that Toyota and Ford use, and _those_ systems are able to mix power/torque from multiple inputs more effectively. @@drivingsports I think the issue is that it’s just very difficult to reproduce the *exact* same scenario for each run at the hill. E.g., at 18:46 in this video, the tire clearly “hits” the “angled” edge of the large rock with the front right tire, so much so the back of the car practically lifts up in back as its forward motion is stopped by the rock. Contrast that with at 9:00 in the other “snow mode” video you mentioned above where the tire is clearly a few inches to the *right* on that same rock and where it meets less physical resistance. You seem to draw some pretty heavy conclusions, but they’re based on subtle, but significant, scenario differences.

Honestly, I find it confusing and it would be great if Hyundai would put out something a little clearer in both written and video form for drivers. As another poster pointed out, if you want to do serious off-reading, get a vehicle designed for it. Most AWD vehicles that are comfortable on long road trips are not designed for anything other than very light off roading like driving on dirt roads or relatively clear of obstruction forest roads. The road bed in the video which the Tucson is having trouble with is likely to cause a flat tire and maybe even a cracked rim. Not recommended!

    Does anyone else miss the days when you'd lock the hubs and know which tires were moving and not have a computer trying to figure it out?

      That’s a four wheel drive function, these are AWD systems which do not lock (even if they say the lock the center, it’s not a real diff lock). The difference is in the differentials.

    GREAT review!! JUST got the hybrid limited Tucson and i was cringing when you drove it thru water! She did great! Your review was so spot on, fair, informative, you touched on every single feature, 5 stars! how i've never come across ur channel b4 is amazing, becuz i watch car/truck reviews nonstop : ) Yours was so perfect, almost makes me want to take my review down...lol
    I traded my Sorento Prestige X-Line for this (the one you mentioned you just reviewed last week : ) and i haven't looked back!! The MEMORY seats (lacking in my Sorento Prestige - (really KIA?) & the smart park alone feature makes me grin ear to ear each morning backing it out of my narrow garage. Gonna go watch your Sorento vid just for nostalgia...lol GREAT job on this vid!!! Just sub'bed & hit the bell : )
    And yes, sadly she MASSIVELY FAILED your rock test, but lucky for me "My Joyride" is never driven on anything but pavement!!! BTC

    The Hyundai sedans have dual clutch. Honda/ Toyota are using CVT or if hybrid e-CVT.

    The problem with it is that the rear turning signals are placed very low and that prevent people behind you from seeing it in traffic
